This beautiful drama about a quiet English village and its inhabitants during the early days of WWII is perfect in every way. Director William Wyler was himself flying a bombing mission over Germany the night the Academy got it right and singled it out as Best Picture. Like the hat Greer Garson purchases despite the cost, this film is rather precious, and if made tomorrow, would still win the award for Best Picture.

Wyler was delivered a fabulous script from screenwriters Arthur Wimpers, George Froeschell, James Hilton, and Claudine West. Greer Garson’s restrained performance as Jan Struther’s heroine won her Best Actress honors but the entire cast is equally good, Teresa Wright especially so as the bright and cheery young woman who would marry the Miniver’s son and show them all the way.

Wyler paints a lovely picture of day-to-day life in 1939 for the Miniver family and the small village where they live. Greer Garson is the nice Mrs. Miniver. An early scene when the kind porter Mr. Ballard (Henry Travers) reveals to her that he has named the beautiful red rose he intends to enter in the yearly floral contest after her, sets the feelings and mood of the entire film. The story of the white rose turning red from tears yet made more beautiful was not lost on audiences on both sides of the pond. If ever a film gave the world a resolve to stand up to evil, this quiet and touching film certainly did.

Wyler shows the poignancy of young men going off to war as the Miniver’s young son, Vin, home from college and full of ideals, joins the R.A.F. There is one terribly moving scene as Garson listens with all her being as the planes fly over, waiting for Vin’s signal that he is one of those returning. Wyler shows the efforts of all during the early days of the war to help in any way possible. Clem (Walter Pidgeon) will use his small boat along with his fellow villagers in a dangerous rescue mission during the night, beautifully filmed by the director.

But through the air raids, which become matter-of-fact for the Miniver family, the joyous moments of living are shown by Wyler, leaving no doubt that life will and does go on. Dame May Whitty is superb as the village’s most powerful woman, Lady Beldon. She is the grandmother of the sweet Carol, portrayed winningly by Teresa Wright. It is her romance with Vin (Richard Ney) which will provide the most poignant moment in the film, showing that tragedy could come at any moment.

Garson’s cool resolve when confronting a downed German flyer in her kitchen is never to be forgotten. Neither are the moments of Mrs. Miniver’s small children sleeping peacefully in the cellar during air raids hitting closer and closer to home while Clem talks and she knits. Just as moving, however, is the moment the winner for best rose is announced.

There is a deeply moving and unexpected death, just as it happened to many families, English and otherwise, during the war. But it will not defeat the Minivers or the village, and the final speech was so stirring that Roosevelt had leaflets of it dropped from the air all over Europe.

Rarely does something so entertaining have the substance of “Mrs. Miniver.” It is no wonder that Churchill said “Mrs. Miniver” was more important to the war effort than an entire fleet of of destroyers ever could have been. A magnificent and unforgettable film you can watch time and again with the entire family. A must see film for everyone.

“Mrs. Miniver” is one of those non-factual, war time propaganda tear jerkers that has proven itself to be enduring and immensely entertaining. Upon its release, Winston Churchill declared the film more influential in getting America involved in WWII than a fleet of destroyers. The plot concerns Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson) the atypical English housewife quietly enduring the hardships of war and capturing a downed Nazi pilot in her begonias in the process. It sounds hoaky but actually the story is incredibly stirring. Walter Pigeon, Garson?s frequent costar, is cast as her tender husband, Clem. Richard Ney plays her slightly opinionated son, Vin who rises to the occasion and becomes a flyer for the RAF. Aside: Ney and Garson were carrying on an affair during the filming that eventually resulted in a disastrous marriage and a quicky divorce. Oh well, at least the relationships in the film are perfect. Of merit is Teresa Wright?s outstanding performance as Carol, Vin’s doomed fianc?e.

Previously issued versions of this film were near perfect so it’s really no surprise to discover that this DVD carries on in the same tradition. Quite simply: the picture is outstanding. Blacks are deep and solid. The gray scale is beautiful and well balanced. There is hardly a scratch or a bit of grit or grain to distract. The soundtrack is equally impressive in MONO but very, very nicely balanced. A bit of a disappointment comes from the fact that no one at Warner Brothers had the foresight to do a ?making of? featurette. All we get is a couple of short subjects and a stills gallery.

This is the way fairy tales used to be — before they got bleached, pressed, and de-linted by half-wits trying to protect tender ears. Before they got Disney-fied. Sure, there’s violence here, some of it shocking, but none of it gratuitous. Could it give a kid nightmares? Maybe. But given today’s pablum stories, maybe it’s about time.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pan’s Labyrinth! Click Here

Pan’s Labyrinth takes us directly into the subconscious, and into the storyforms that infuse all of the great myths, fairy tales, and religions. It’s a rich and satisfying stew of symbolism, mystery, and redemption. Multilayered and inspiring, it’s a film you’ll want to see again. It’s hard not to gush, but it’s been so long since a movie this good has made it into the quasi-mainstream.

What makes Pan’s Labyrinth most effective is it’s juxtaposition of harsh “reality” and the mysterious world that lives side by side with it. The heroine, a young girl who may carry a magical seed of immortality (the soul of god’s only child who once ventured into the world of men, suffered, and died long ago), is contacted by shapeshifting fairies who lead her to a faun (much like the mythological Pan) who says she may reclaim her throne and escape the mortal world by performing three tasks. The faun in Pan’s Labyrinth is every bit as complex as the mythological Pan, a creature perhaps older than the gods themselves. There’s something sly, and perhaps even sexual about this elegant and almost alien faun, as he represents the forces at play inside this sensitive young girl. In fact, like every good fairy tale, all of the strange, wondrous, and chilling creatures represent facets of the subconscious, including baby-eating ghouls, flitting fairies, and gluttonous toads.

Pan’s Labyrinth is a commentary on the resiliency and power of the human imagination, and takes us to the place where dreams are spun and the great heroic tale of overcoming (of the self and the world) takes root. That spark of the divine in all of us — or at least the hope of it — powers the great story of our lives, and we need tales like this to remind of us of the magic and transformative power of story telling. In the flickering light of the theater, like some great hearth around which we’ve gathered, Pan’s Labyrinth took me back to my childhood, and made me think of so many of the great stories I’d read over the years — of demonic dogs with saucer-sized eyes, of child-stealing trolls, and evil stepmothers. And, finally, of the champions who venture down into those great cracks in the Earth, where the roots of mythic trees twist and wind and the greatest treasure of all can be found: the noble, heroic, and undying spirit that lies within us.

First of all, this film is not suitable for children. It is intended to be an adult fairytale with a young girl as its protagonist. Everyone I know who have viewed this film has loved it, including my 75 year old father, who is not really into foreign films or art films.

The is not suitable for children for a few scenes of torture and violence. While difficult to watch, it serves to create a sense of real peril, ugliness, cruelty and evil that propels our protagonist to seek comfort in another world of grotesque beauty. She is a young girl in the midst of a brutal civil war where both sides reside under her roof, and the only reason she is safe is because her mother is pregnant by a fascist general. There is a sense that this safety is precarious and could evaporate quickly due to circumstances beyond her control.

The protagonists other world is sparked by a discovery of an old labyrinth by the old house where the general holds his position and has a doctor see to the pregnant mother’s ailing health.

This other world that is created is amazingly done and is beautiful in its grotesquely Gothic way. The original score is perfect for the film with its haunting humming lullaby. The young girl is perfect young heroine that is flawed but lovable. You want her to fulfill her destiny and escape to her throne in a magical place. The rest of the cast are amazing showing the full range of humanity in a time of war from immense cruelty to amazing courage and compassion. The film itself has a great sense of pacing, almost poetic writing, and is able to keep up the feeling of suspense.

The movie is sad, beautiful, cruel, agonizing, and has kept haunting me. The film made me cry and at times took my breath away. It made me feel great to see such a well-made movie in the era of over hyped corporate films. This had the craftsmanship of an expert watchmaker.

The lullaby still lingers in my mind.

FINALLY! I thought I was going to pass out when I rec’d an e-mail notification that almost all my favorite films from the 60’s were finally coming to DVD, especially since Susan Slade never saw the ‘light of day’ on VHS. I own the other 3 titles on VHS and have watched them hundreds of times, with great pleasure for an uncomplicated time in our lives. These movies were always shown on Saturday nights when I was a pre-teen. I was shocked each and every time I watched “Susan Slade”, that this unmarried girl had a baby!!! Boy, oh boy have times changed….my own twenty something children would laugh at me now for my innocent views- But my enjoyment over bounds with each viewing, so this 4 movie set is like getting a birthday and Christmas gift all rolled into one! Now….if only we could get `A Rage to Live’, `Youngblood Hawke’, `Summer Love’, ‘Claudelle Inglish’,'The Chapman Report’ and `My Blood Runs Cold’ on DVD my life would be complete! (no, not really but it sounds good) – I am so proud of Warner Brothers for taking a leap of faith that there is still an audience for these fun and classic 60’s films! Bravo, Warner Brothers….you did good!

I received the Romance Classics set today and here are my impressions of the video quality. First of all, fear not. All the films are 16×9 widescreen and anamorphic video(enhanced for widescreen TVs). Parrish, Susan Slade, and Rome Adventure are all dual-layer DVDs, with the shorter Palm Springs Weekend being a single layer disc. I would rate them in order of video quality as:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection! Click Here

1. Susan Slade

2. Palm Springs Weekend

3. Rome Adventure

4. Parrish

Buy,Download, Or Stream Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection! Click Here

Susan Slade was never on VHS or laserdisc and appears to be a new, modern transfer. It is very sharp and clean with great colors. Palm Springs Weekend was on VHS and laserdisc and is clean with nice color, but somewhat softer than Susan Slade. Rome Adventure and Parrish (my favorite film of the four) appear to me to be from the old mid-1990s masters for VHS and laserdisc. While they look good, they have a slight layer of video grain and some softness. The skintones on Rome Adventure are a bit reddish for my tastes but not too bad. The sound on all the films is mono and okay.

I wish all the films had been remastered up to the quality of Susan Slade, but it is great to have them on DVD and for a great price.

It’s so great to finally see a major feature film that shows Africa from an African perspective, as opposed to through the prism of Western eyes. Another recent well-deserved Oscar winner (Best foreign language film) I just had to have in my collection; this is a violent and uncompromising look at life in a Soweto township.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tsotsi! Click Here

Presley Cheweneyagae plays the lead, a Johannesburg small-time gangster whose nickname Tsotsi means “thug”. I read somewhere that Presley was discovered playing Hamlet in a Soweto theatre group. He’s a find in a million, as his performance is mesmerising.

Tsotsi finds a baby in the back of a car he’s just jacked off a suburban black woman as the woman waited for the security gates outside her home to open. He doesn’t do the expected and simply dump the baby at the side of the road – surprisingly, he decides to take it home and care for it. He hasn’t a clue how to care for a child of course and he turns to a local woman who makes decorative mobiles from glass. She’s a nursing mother herself, and – under the threat of death, mind you – Tsotsi gets her to look after the child while he goes back out there to do his thing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tsotsi! Click Here

It’s an interesting study of how complex life is for people who don’t have much and while the movie doesn’t make excuses or descend into sentimentality at any point, it’s engaging to gradually see the heart of the man called Tsotsi – a man who at first glance seemed utterly heartless – emerge for all to see. It’s a great story, based on the novel by South African playwright Athol Fugard, and the final scenes had me (literally) on the edge of my seat the first time I watched it. Gavin Hood makes good use of Johannesburg’s urban setting and the natural beauty of South Africa. I strongly recommend this movie. For anyone who might not know and who may have an interest, this is an authentic slice of African life.

Though “Tsotsi” is set in South Africa and the milieu, to the American eye, is as exotic as a film set on the Moon, the concerns are Universal: the loss or disconnect of ones parents, the longing for a parent’s love and caring, a governments lack of concern for a citizens civil rights.

Tsotsi (Presley Chweneygae) is a hood, a young man who kills and steals without any apparent concern for what he is doing and why he is doing it. His face and eyes radiate mostly hate and disdain. He is psychically and emotionally detached and removed. Then, one day he steals a luxury car, shoots the woman to whom it belongs and realizes, once he drives the car away, that there is an infant in the back seat.

This beautiful, innocent child forces Tsotsi ( really named David) to face the loss of his Mother, the uncaring, drunken non-concern of his father and the deep seated, mostly ignored or glossed , psychically ignored feelings with which he hasn’t been able to deal.

Director and screenwriter Gavin Hood (adapted from a novel by Athol Fugard) has fashioned a traditionally structured film and peopled it with non-traditional characters and it works because we can all relate to Tsotsi’s dilemma. And it doesn’t hurt to have Presley Chweneygae as your lead character. The first time we see Tsotsi on screen he looks at the camera with his huge black eyes: eyes that are filled with superiority, despair, disgust and hurt. When he first sees the infant his eyes and face fill with wonder and awe at the utter helplessness and innocence. It is this disparity and friction that makes the film crackle with fire and well observed life.

“Tsotsi” is not a revolutionary film like say the similarly themed “Children of God” but it is a very emotionally effective and socially aware one and Presley Chweneyagae’s performance is so natural and truthful that it makes you wince with recognition and empathy.

This is not the Complete Plastic Man Collection, it’s only the complete Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show. This is the series that had Plas teamed up with Hula-Hula, not Baby Plas. So calling this “The Complete Collection” is misleading. It’s like when Shout! released “Captain N: The Game Master – The Complete Series” when they still had a third of the series to go. Many of the episodes even use the Plastic Man-Baby Plas Super Comedy Show opening. I found that annoying, since Baby Plas never appears in any of the episodes in this set. They should have used the original Comedy/Adventure Show opening for the appropriate episodes. Otherwise, why not just release an actual “Complete” set?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Plastic Man: The Complete Collection! Click Here

Having said all of that, this is a terrific show! The Comedy/Adventure Show was far superior to the versions with Baby Plas and Plastic Family. Our man Eel O’Brian is the perfect comedic superhero. Hula-Hula was a great sidekick, and Penny and the Chief were solid supporting characters/love interests. Every episode had Plas battling a different supervillain. Evil jerks like Dr. Dome, Dr. Dinosaur, The Weed, Half-Ape, and Ghostfinger were not classic DC villains, but they were great in this funny series.

This is not the weak cartoon other reviewers have made it out to be. This version of the show is more along the lines of a Scooby-Doo, with mysteries to solve and bad guys to beat. The Baby Plas stuff, I will agree, is fairly lame. But this series is GOOD. The combination of early 80s Ruby-Spears production and DC Comics can’t be beat if you are into that sort of thing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Plastic Man: The Complete Collection! Click Here

The animation is what you would expect, with the constant Superfriends-style transitions. The voice acting is standard for the era, which means it’s awesome. Michael Bell, especially, does a fabulous job as the man of the hour, Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, AKA Plastic Man. He’s great as the dashing, hilarious, likeable superhero.

I liked the simple packaging for this set, 4 single sided discs, nice sturdy clear plastic case, and retro art.

Plastic Man has always been one of “those” cartoons for me. One of those that I have been pining to add to my collection since I started collecting television on DVD. So there was never a question of buying this, the only concern is that the episodes would be really bad. But they’re not, they rock. If you are into the late 70s/early 80s era of Saturday morning cartoons, (and why wouldn’t you be) buy this so we can get an eventual Plastic Family set.

Dang! Why are some of these reviews so damned bitter? We are talking about a cartoon, right? A cartoon that entertained millions of viewers every week on ABC? We’re not talking about someone that just bombed an abortion clinic are we?

First, to correct some of the information, this series was produced by Ruby-Spears Enterprises, not Hanna-Barbera. If the back of the box states Hanna-Barbera, it’s simply because the Ruby-Spears library of programming was absorbed into TimeWarner and for legalities, it’s under the Hanna-Barbera umbrella.

I remember watching this cartoon, and while I never thought it was up to the superior standards of an HB product, it did have its moments and is worth purchasing if for no other reason, than to relive your childhood memories. People just love to trash Hanna-Barbera, and Ruby-Spears but I dare any of you to compare their product with anything that Filmation or DIC put out.

My only complaint about this set, is that it isolates the “Plasticman” segments and does not include the other cartoons that were a part of “The Plasticman Comedy Adventure Hour”: “Rickety Rockey,” “Mightyman and Yukk” and “Fangface.” I would have loved to see the entire block included. As it stands now, it probably won’t happen. Oh well, that’s why God invented Boomerang.

The is a movie of stunning images that taken together provide a stunning and ironical montage of “the good life.” In fact, by the end I was reminded simultaneously of Thoreau’s statement that the mass of people live lives of quiet desperation and Kierkegaard’s belief that the natural condition of human beings is that of despair. There is no plot. The movie consists of a series of loosely or unconnected scenes with little or not attempt to link them. Many of the scenes are stunning. Some are disturbing. None of them are boring, which is remarkable given the length of the film (166 minutes).

The beginning is memorable, with a helicopter flying over Rome with a statue of Christ hanging underneath. A celebrity journalist, portrayed brilliantly by Marcello Mastroianni (the original producer, Dino de Laurentiis, pulled out of the project when Fellini refused to cast Paul Newman in the lead role), is following the statue in order to write about it, but he and his team get distracted by women sunbathing in bikinis on a rooftop. In this and many other scenes, the tremendous gap between traditional and historical symbols of meaning and current preoccupation with mere pleasure is articulated. The overwhelming sense in the film is of the tremendous triviality of these people’s lives and the loss of moral purpose. There are only two exceptions in the film: Marcello’s close friend Steiner, whose life is a search for meaning and truth, and a young girl Marcello first meets at a restaurant where she is a food server and then sees again in the last few moments of the film. But Steiner’s search is a futile one, leading him not merely to kill himself but his two children as well. And the young girl is not merely a symbol of innocence, but of innocence lost, not to be found again. In the last few seconds of the film, after a drunken debauch, Marcello walks to the seashore at dawn. There he sees the young girl across a watery divide. She waves to him, and tries to shout something to him. But her words are drowned by the waves and the wind, and eventually they both smile, realizing that they he will never be able to hear what she has to say. The way that Marcello wistfully shrugs his shoulders is almost an acknowledgement that he is one of the damned. It is one of the most heartbreaking moments in modern film, as well as one of the most poignant.

Rome itself is as prominent in this film as any of the characters, but it is not the Rome one finds in ROMAN HOLIDAY. Much of the city looks not historic or beautiful, but antiseptic, shoddily fabricated, barely reclaimed modern ruins. There are a number of ugly modernistic buildings and a number of the areas look bleak and abandoned. This is all, of course, highly symbolic of the bleakness of the lives of the characters. Many films have discussions like this imposed on them (I think of some of the magnificent parodies in episodes of Monty Python), but LA DOLCE VITA almost demands metaphysical discussion. Fellini is concerned with the fate of human beings in the modern world, with what we have all lost and what we have failed to acquire in its place.

Special mention has to be made of the extraordinary music for the film written by the incomparable Nino Rota, and easily stands as one of the very greatest film scores ever written, as integral to the success of the film as Bernard Hermann’s scores for NORTH BY NORTHWEST or PSYCHO or Ennio Morricone’s for A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. It is not epic or histrionic, but playful and light, almost ironic, as if to underscore the manner in which the characters whistle while Rome burns itself out.

A spectacular film, one of my favorites ever. It is arguably Fellini’s greatest film, and one of the great monuments of cinema.

LA DOLCE VITA is neither terrible nor overrated. There is something to be said for the pretty large number of film fans who love this one. It is an episodic film, but that is a feature of much of Fellini. In several films, Fellini builds his meaning in this way: not so much with a single continuing plot, but with a series of smaller stories that add up to a total collection of ideas.

Buy,Download, Or Stream La Dolce Vita! Click Here

Maybe the secret (if there is one) of LA DOLCE VITA’s appeal is that it’s so darned interesting all the time. This especially applies to the plot concerning Steiner. Steiner is the key figure in the film, apart from Marcello himself, who is Fellini’s and the viewer’s counterpart. What Steiner represents to Marcello is of prime importance. The young reporter sees the older man as a perfected, idealized version of himself. He longs to emulate Steiner and is convinced this man knows how to live life fully. There is irony aplenty in the entire Steiner narrative. When Marcello brings his wife to the Steiner party, they meet a few interesting, but mostly insufferablty pretentious ‘intellectual’ types. (the famous Fellini ‘careless’ post-dubbing of dialogue in this scene particularly amusing: it seems to add to these characters’ disconnection from a true self, as though they don’t even realize what they are actually saying). Steiner himself associates with these people, yet does not truly seem to be one of them. He feels trapped by his own pretentious circle of intellectuals. When Marcello tell him how much he envies and admires him, Steiner replies:

“Don’t be like me. Salvation doesn’t lie within four walls. I’m too serious to be a dilettante and too much a dabbler to be a professional. Even the most miserable life is better than a sheltered existence in an organized society where everything is calculated and perfected.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream La Dolce Vita! Click Here

This gives Marcello much to contemplate for the rest of the film. And Steiner’s subsequent suicide confirms the deep suspicion growing within the protagonist that all of existence, as he himself has known it thus far, is fundamentally absurd and meaningless. For this reason the film is existential in its outlook. Marcello is the modern, urban human, trapped in an absurd universe. But Fellini, seems not fully despairing in his outlook. Consider, for example, the significance of Marcello’s interaction with the blonde girl in the cafe–she represents a simpler life away from the city and the over-complications of modern existence. Many viewers have missed the fact that it is this same girl who waves to Marcello on the beach in the film’s final scene: she waves and is telling something he is never able to hear, so he waves once, and turns back to the empty, inebriated crowd as they speculate about the unknowability of nature, embodied by a monstrous, bloated fish.

LA DOLCE VITA is a great film for the way it pulls some viewers in and forces them to contemplate the actual content of what they are seeing. The film’s main theme is one it shares with fims of Antonioni: modern man has become disconnected from the natural world and he suffers because of it. LA DOLCE VITA’s visual style is poetic, some of its characters are more than compelling and hard to forget, and its musical score by Nino Rota is among the most memorable of all time.

This 1980’s series, loosely based on Scott O’Dell’s novel “The King’s Fifth” is a superb blend of Japanese animation, French writing, and some of the best music ever.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mysterious Cities of Gold! Click Here

The series which is one big story arc follows a group of Spaniards in the 16th century who go looking for a city of gold that is hidden somewhere in Central or South America, they are accompanied by an Inca girl who can decipher clues to its location and later meet other people along the way.

The storyline includes mythology of lost continents of Atlantis and Mu (Hiva in this story), and of their supposed highly advanced technology that rivals today’s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mysterious Cities of Gold! Click Here

This series was the jewel of Nickelodeon’s television programming in the 1980’s and became a cult classic. It was previously released on DVD in Quebec and France in the early 2000’s and Japan a few years later. It is now set for a long overdue US release with excellent special features.

I speculate that the success of bootleg copies of the series may have contributed to it finally being released on DVD in English speaking countries just like what happened with the series Sea Quest DSV.

The series also includes a music soundtrack by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy recorded with synthesizers which is worthy of a Grammy and an Emmy. This soundtrack is better than most movie soundtracks and has been released on LP and CD over the decades.

I am ecstatic about this release and will be buying both editions. It is a show that people who watched it growing up will want their kids to see. I watched this all the time when it was on Nickelodeon in the 80’s and am glad it is getting the release it deserves.

After 20 years of waiting, its finally here.

The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a show most of children would have seen on Nickelodeon in the mid-80’s. A rare collaboration between French writers and Japanese animators (overseen by none other than Hayao Miyazaki himself), it combined strong characters with rich artwork, and set it all in a more or less historically accurate 15th century Meso-America. 39 episodes in length, this series tells one continuous story, told primarily from the viewpoint of the show’s three main child characters.

Along their journey, these children demonstrate the virtues of love, friendship, kindness, and self-sacrifice, without any of the artificial constructs normally placed into such stories. They learn and grow, becoming deeper, more mature people as they explore and come in contact with real South American cultures, which are painted in a positive light. The primary antagonists are the invading Spaniards, seeking to look the new world’s gold for their own profit.

From a decade where everything was a glorified half-hour toy commercial, the Mysterious Cities of Gold stood out due to it’s emphasis on story telling and character development. And, unlike other series of it’s time, when the story ends, so does the series. No attempt was made to milk this show for every last penny, it has a definite start, middle, and end, so there is a tangible sense of completion and satisfaction upon completing your viewing.

In addition, each episode contained, at the end, a brief history lesson about the real world versions of items and places visited by the characters in that episode. These were cut from various non-English versions of the series, but are here in full educational glory.

Never before released on video (either VHS or DVD) in America before now, and filled with great extras, this is something that should not be missed. For those of us that grew up watching the adventures of Esteban, to a whole new generation of children that have never experienced a cartoon of this caliber, you simply cannot go wrong here.

Children of the Sun, after 20 long years, our time has finally begun!

There’s something about this movie that I’ve always liked. I’m not sure what it is, but being a Pokemon fan, of course I like it. The movie have always been great, and this one has something that I really like about it.

The movie starts out in the North Pole, with a scientist named Dr. Lund, his friend Yuko, and his son, Tory. There is suddenly an explosion, and Tory is trampled by a frightened pack of Walrein. And, as they say, after that, all heck broke looks.

A meteor is the reason for the explosion, and the creature inside the meteor is more than your average Pokemon. Deoxys, a rare Pokemon from another planet (woah, more than one Poke-Planet? Niiice.) The strange creature, carrying a rock with a gem inside, is suddenly attacked by the large, dragon-esque Rayquaza, a frequenter of the Ozone Layer. So, what the heck is he here for?

Ah, So Rayquaza feels threatened by Deoxys, and so, both pokemon break out in a rather spectacular pokemon battle. (With some pretty cool background music, might I add.) So, professor Lund flees with his colleages, and son.

Four years later, a young Pokemon trainer named Ash Ketchum, along with some friends, enter the high tech city of La Rousse, and as fate would have it, Tory’s hometown. And, well, I won’t spoil it from there. The plot is good, and Deoxys’ ‘destructive’ intentions are less cruel than one would think. Don’t worry, folks, no angsty Mewtwo-copy here.

Also, Rayquaza brings some nice battles into the movie. His fights against Deoxys are totally awesome. The soundtrack is also great. I really love the music played during The opening scenes of the movie, and the fights between Rayquaza and Deoxys. The animation is very spiffy, shiny bright and new :P .

I haven’t had the pleasure of watching the original Japanese version of the movie, but when I do, I’ll tell you all about it, ‘kay?

Well, I guess that pretty much wraps things up. Oh yes, Tory’s afraid of pokemon, due to the whole ‘get attacked by a herd of walrein’ thing. Heh. Okay then, Sayanora, faithful readers!

It’s So Awesome. I Saw The Movie On “Cartoon Network” Last Saturday And Sunday. And I Was Just Blown Away By It. It’s So Cool. And At The Start Of The Movie You Get To See All Of The Pokemon Such As, Volpix, Evee, Ryhorn, Onyx, Geodude, And All The Others. And The Very Best Part Of The Movie Is That The New Pokemon Deoxys Doesn’t Talk. And It Can Also Double It’s Ownself. And It Also Has A Twin Too. So I Would Like Everyone To Buy This Moive. It’s A Must Have For Any Pokemon Fan.

It took two Hollywood films (Hard Target and Broken Arrow) before John Woo was allowed to cut loose with his trademark style on Face/Off. The result was his most commercially and critically successful American film at that point in his career. However, for fans of his Hong Kong films, this one seemed like a highlight reel from his earlier work as Woo recycled many of his signature shots Birds flying in slow motion? Check. Guy Leaping in the air while firing two guns simultaneously? Check. Unfortunately, Face/Off marks the apex of his Hollywood career. Woo has done nothing since that’s been as good. So, to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, Paramount has revisited the film with a brand new special edition.

Woo works hard to sell the film’s admittedly outlandish gimmick by throwing all kinds of scientific mumbo jumbo at us and lingering on shots of spiffy looking technology. The swapping of identities also allows the filmmaker to examine one of his favourite themes: how two people can exhibit similar characteristics but be on opposite sides of the law and on opposite sides of the moral spectrum. It is nice to see Woo finally given a decent-sized budget to play with and two big-time movie stars like Cage and Travolta to work with. Despite a few audacious glimmers, like staging a chaotic gunfight around a child listening to “Under the Rainbow,” we still get a recycling of Woo’s stylistic trademarks. However, this can be somewhat forgiven as it was the first real exposure for many North Americans to his work on a mainstream level.

The first disc features an audio commentary by director John Woo and screenwriters Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. Woo says that he initially passed on the project because he didn’t think that he could do a science fiction film, but after working with CGI on Broken Arrow, felt more comfortable with the idea. The writers say that Woo concentrated on the characters and their emotions in their conversations together.

Also included is an additional commentary with Werb and Colleary that features a lot of repeated comments from the previous track. Werb and Colleary stress that they wanted to write an action film with a villain that was just as interesting as the hero.

There are six deleted scenes and alternate ending with optional commentary by Woo, Werb and Colleary. There’s a nice, reflective moment where Archer spends the night in his dead son’s room before his surgery and also two action sequences that are extended.

The second disc has a well-made documentary entitled, “The Light and The Dark: Making Face/Off” that can be viewed in five separate featurettes or altogether. Cage and Travolta talk about how they approached their roles, mimicking each other. Cast and crew praise Woo and his signature style and how well he works with actors. The film’s elaborate practical, visual effects and stunts are all examined. Finally, Woo sums up the film – for him, it’s all about family and how Archer achieves closure with his.

“John Woo: A Life in Pictures” is a 30-minute profile of the filmmaker, from his humble childhood, living poor in a bad neighbourhood to a successful Hollywood director. It also takes a brief look at some of his key Hong Kong work but nothing too detailed for hardcore fans. This doc acts mainly as a primer for newcomers to his work.

Finally, a theatrical trailer.

We already know this is a great action film with superb performances from both Travolta and Cage so I will just comment on the features:

Featurettes includes a decent amount information on all aspects of the script development, making of, locations, casting, set designs, special effects, weapons and the ‘mimic’ acting strategies for Cage/Travlota playing each other. Also includes 7 deleted scenes, a biography-type feature covering the life and career of director John Woo, and the original theatrical trailer.

The greatest disappointment here is that while several cast/crew members appear in newly filmed interviews, both Travolta and Cage participate only by way of vintage interviews filmed back when the movie was actually being made. You would think they would have been proud enough of this great film to come back to document it for posterity sake…

This DVD is probably worth the upgrade for fans, especially if you can manage to get a few bucks for your old copy.

The first thing that must be said after watching these shows (in full for the first time)is that I was impressed with the writing. Keeping in mind that it was a sitcom, the writing is pretty sharp, much sharper than The Brady Bunch.

Look fast, not only for the “Before they were famous” pop ups of people like Farrah Fawcett, Louis Gossitt Junior(with hair!), Richard Pryor and others but for the houses. The Partridge family lives on the “street” with the houses from “Bewitched”, “I Dream Of Jeannie”, “Hazel” and others.

You even see Keith Partridge drop off a date of his in front of the “Bewitched” house. Reusing these house facades was done over and over again in Screen Gems shows. It’s fun to pick them out.

The shows are nicely cleaned up and sharp but fall short when it comes to the color.

On most shows, the color is not as rich as I’d expect from other releases of late 60’s, early 70’s color shows (which were made to showcase color TV which was newer and more expensive). Most properly done DVD releases of color shows of this era have a rich technicolor sheen (like The Brady Bunch, Star Trek and Here’s Lucy).

Here, it looks like the color was dialed back a bit. While this doesn’t make it an inferior transfer, it makes it less reflective of the time it was shown. The biggest effect of this is the lack of color in the skin tones. Where most shows of this period show skin tones looking pretty rich and colorful, on this DVD they are subdued.

The mono sound is fine and represents the soundtrack well.

The set loses a bit on the restoring of ephemeral bits that probabaly weren’t seen since the original airings. Both Hogan’s Heroes and Brady Bunch releases restored the opening “In Color” bumpers to beginnings of all the shows. I wish it was also done for PF.

Also, someone else mentioned that the original “Screen Gems” logo was delteted at the end as well (although I never found it scary). My memory of the yellow/orange background Screen Gems logo is inseperably tied to shows like Partridge Family, Bewitched, Gidget, I Dream Of Jeannie and others. Replacing it with the new Sony logo is jarring (just as it was jarring to have the SG logo replaced with Columbia Tristar before in syndication and tapes). It’s a little thing but to buy a vintage show on DVD is to hope they get the little details like that right.

And yes, one show is edited. I know that even though I’m no PF expert. Shows of this time were expected to run at least 25 minutes sans commercials. The final episode of the season runs a bit over 23 minutes and is missing the tag. The least you should expect from purchasing shows on DVD is for the shows to be unedited. This appears to be an oversight so maybe it will be corrected.

The extras include featurettes and commentary and do thier part of giving little known details on the show. The best is a feature on the musicians that “augmented” the Partridge Family.

I have to admit the most fun extra was the couple bonus episodes of the Animated spin off “Partridge Family 2200 AD”. As a fan of the good, bad and the ugly of 1970’s Saturday Morning TV I loved seeing this. I never saw this when it was originally on (must of been busy watching Bugs Bunny) but it is a hoot. It looks like an excuse for Hanna Barbara to use the Partridge Family name and to reuse a lot of thier “The Jetsons” backgrounds. The writing is awful, of course, but so familiar to creatures of 1970’s Saturday Morning that it works despite itself.

Note to DVD makers, do this whenever possible. Include a couple of the animated spin off series on the DVD release.

I’m hoping they put a couple of “Jeannie”s on “I Dream Of Jeannie”, “Emergency+4″’s on Emergency and so on. C’Mon people, it’s something in your vaults you can drag out and call it an extra with no extra work. It’s part of the history of the live action show and of interest to it’s fans.

Anyway, this set is not perfect but still reccomended to fans of the 1970’s, classic TV and fun shows.

The transfers are good (even if the color is slightly lacking) and the extras are nice with the long overdue start of putting sample episodes of the animated spin off as part of the extras.

The Partridge Family’s entry into the DVD format was exciting for me! I was 5 when the show debuted, and excited then too because I already loved pop music, thanks to the Monkees. And coincidentally enough, my name’s Tracy and my little sister’s name is Laurie. The shows are still a lot of fun to watch, and I was struck by how much “Danny and the Mob” is like a Monkees episode, particularly the romp-style chase during “That’ll Be the Day.”

The shows are fun, and I’m glad they included episodes of the awful cartoons. The extras leave a bit to be desired, however, with no scene selections, and no on-screen descriptions of the episodes. I’m also always disappointed with Susan Dey’s decision not to participate in any PF projects. She really has nothing to be ashamed of, and the Partridge Family certainly trumps much of her adult work. And I, like many others, would like the Screen Gems closer reinstated. At least the Season 1 theme song was returned, unlike in syndication.

It’s great to see these episodes looking so good again. I’m going to loan my set to my sister so my 5-year-old niece can get a glimpse of what her mom and Aunt Tracy enjoyed over 30 years ago!
