Joe 90 was Gerry Anderson’s penultimate puppet show of the 1960s, following Captain Scarlet (1967) and preceding the little-known The Secret Service (1969). In 2112, professor Ian McClaine has invented the BIG RAT (Brain Impulse Galvanoscope, Record and Transfer), a machine for copying knowledge and experiences from person to person. WIN (World Intelligence Organization) uses this to prime their top undercover agent before sending him into the field on missions that range from foiling international terrorists to recovering a nuclear weapon from beneath the polar ice. So far so good, but in perhaps the most mind-boggling concept ever to reach children’s TV, that agent is McClaine’s 9-year-old adopted son, Joe.

Somehow even as it stays tru to the Gerry Anderson techno-fantasy formula of secret organizations, gadgetry, and action-packed adventure full of spectacular explosions and violent death, Joe 90 remains blithely unconscious of its own implications. The missions are as globe-trotting as anything in Anderson’s classic Thunderbirds series, and sometimes Joe does save lives, performing a risky brain operation or rescuing trapped astronauts. Yet even then his criminally irresponsible father brainwashes the lad each episode before placing him in a highly dangerous adult situation. Though the production valus remain way ahead of anything else being done on British TV at the time, the qustion remains: how did this ever seem like a good idea?

Joe 90 comes complete in a four-disc boxed set of the entire 30-episode series. The 25-minute episodes are presented in superb picture quality and full, detailed mono sound. In the first of the three 22-minute episodes, the Martian emperor’s henchman Damage sends a delectable spy named Shaboom to trick the traitorous trio and steal their powers. “Playback/Payback” has the ugly boys sending phony footage of their war against Earth to the emperor, but Damage deploys a spy robot to verify their progress. In the final episode, footage of Earthling Angie proves irresistible to a multi-eyed Martian monster, inspiring a visit to Earth to kidnap the object of his affections. If you can get past the vulgar title, this series (based on a series of British books) is basically an update of Power Rangers with Pixar-style animation. Ages 5 and up. –Kimberly Heinrichs

A guaranteed cure for anyone’s blus, it’s a celebration of music that never grows old, fuled by the polyrhythmic pop-funk precision that was a Talking Heads trademark, and lit from within by the geeky supernova that is David Byrne.

The staging–and Demme’s filming of it–builds toward an orgasmic release of music, rising from the bare-stage simplicity of Byrne, accompanied only by a boom box on “Psycho Killer,” to the ecstatic crescendo of “Burning Down the House,” by which time the Heads and additional personnel have all arrived on stage for a performance that seems channeled from heaven for the purpose of universal uplift. (God bless Demme for avoiding shots of the luckiest audience in ’80s pop history; its presence is acknowledged, but not at the viewer’s expense.) With the deliriously eccentric Byrne as ringleader (pausing mid-concert to emerge in his now-legendary oversized suit), this circus of musical pleasure defies the futility of reductive description; it begs to be experienced, felt in the heart, head, and bones, and held there the way we hold on to cherished memories. On those three nights in December 1983, Talking Heads gave love, life, and joy in generous amounts that years cannot erode, and Demme captured this act of creative goodwill on film with minimalist artistic perfection. When that line (and others like it) is uttered by mad monk Maximilian Schell, it’s even creamier. Schell is ushering in the return of the Antichrist by genetically engineering Satan’s minions, but he needs the transplanted faces of beautiful humans to complete the task. Enter Rachael Leigh Cook (pre-She’s All That), who travels with dad Christopher McDonald to Italy, perilously close to Schell’s monastery-laboratory. The movie has lots of Omen- style devilry, and it’s somehow reassuring to see Omen screenwriter David Seltzer still flogging the old 666 gimmick. The genre has its kicks, but the execution here is pretty clumsy, and Cook is a cluless heroine. For pure camp valu, however, Maximilian Schell approaches Rod-Steiger-Amityville-Horror status. –Robert Horton
