If you’re looking at this product page, you’ve likely seen “Little Britain,” so I’ll skip reviewing this brilliant and hilarious show and instead address the DVDs themselves. This box set includes all three series of “Little Britain,” plus the “Little Britain Live” and “Little Britain Abroad” specials. All of these DVDs are excellently produced and must-haves for fans of this program. The picture and sound are phenomenal, but best of all are the extensive extras.

Each DVD set includes episode commentaries from stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, deleted scenes, interviews, talk show appearances, behind-the-scenes documentaries, and more. The included documentaries aren’t the short featurettes found on many DVDs, but instead feature-length specials (often 60 min. long) that show what goes into creating the show for TV or stage. Particularly entertaining are the documentaries about the making of the live show (on the “Little Britain Live” DVD) and the live show’s tour of Australia (on the “Little Britain Abroad” DVD). Walliams and Lucas are endlessly entertaining when not on stage, and there’s a consistent stream of guest stars in the documentaries. In short, this set is highly recommended for fans of Emily, Vicky, Ann, Des, Lou, Sebastian and the rest.

It’s true the humor in Little Britain is not for everyone. The skits range from “rude” bodily fluids spewing to some quite clever site gags. Skits are hit and miss – some being hilarious and some just lame. Everyone will have their favorite characters (mine being Lou and Andy, Daffyd, Vicky, and Bubbles).

For USians, the fact you can’t understand half of what is being said makes it even funnier. Of course, there are references and cameos we won’t get either but it doesn’t detract too much – get a friend from the UK to fill you in. But cameos from celebrities like Elton John and George Michael are great. Having visited the UK at least once will help give you a frame of reference for a lot of the characters.

Little Britain definitely comes from the school of Benny Hill and Monty Python. Anyone raised on those shows should feel right at home. And refreshing to those of us in the US who loathe political correctness – this is stuff that would never pass US censors, even if it did, no major network would touch it with a 100′ pole for fear of threats of boycotts (OK, maybe FOX would air it). I can’t imagine a US show having a character like Desiree DeVere and the backlash it would cause.

Being able to get Little Britain on DVD is one of the good things about globalization. Hopefully the days of being able to choose what we want to see instead of having some corporate suit or politician choose it for us are not far off.

Anyone, if you are a fan of British comedy – this is a must to see.

Tom Graeff’s “Teenagers From Outer Space” is some kind of strange, perhaps accidental masterpiece. How did such a low-budget effort,using unknown (mostly untalented) actors wind up being so entertaining?

One big reason for this movie’s ’success’ is its pulp sci-fi look and feel. Watching it is like reading a 1950s sci-fi comic book, or like reading a sci-fi short story from the same period. The pulp look derives from the costumes and choice of locations used, as well as that of the monster “Gargan”. A pulp feel results from the fast pace (actually rare in the sci-fi B-movie genre), some surprising violence, and the earnest, if inept, acting style.

A few scenes betray Tom Graeff’s directorial talent: the laser gun attacks at the gas station, and especially, the unexpectedly effective car chase. These may frustrate some viewers; they suggest how much “better” the film might have been. But for some, they are balanced by the wonderfully comatose performance of the lead actor and the ludicrous spectacle of the “Gargan”.

The DVD issue of “Teenagers From Outer Space” deserves a top recommendation. The film transfer is clear and rather impressive, the sound more than adequate. Inside the colorful keepcase there is a really informative essay. Another big plus is the collection of original trailers for other films in the B-Sci-Fi genre, most of which are in fine shape and–in some cases–are more interesting than the films themselves. Included here is, fortunately, the rarely seen trailer for “Teenagers From Outer Space”: the wondrous film that includes NO teenage actors, but will entertain generations to come.

Derek, a rebel teenager from outer space, strays from his alien pack when he finds that the men of his saucer will release their herd of Gorgons (giant lobsters) on Earth, at the expense of human life. Stumbling into town in his spacesuit, he quickly finds a room for rent (the landlord says he can just “pay later” if he doesn’t have the cash immediately… try doing that in California nowadays). Enter the “bad” (albeit really cute) teen alien, who attempts to recapture Derek and return him to his own world.

There are two scenes worthy of hearty praise in this fine film.

I was very fond of the scene in which Derek single-handedly fights the Gorgon (aka the giant lobster). The lobsters – er, Gorgons – don’t really crawl anywhere more than they seem to be held and shook off-screen; this was no doubt expertly performed by an imported British nanny.

Another superior scene is when the dishy, oversexed blonde in the swimming pool gives the “teen” alien Derek the up-and-down and invites him into the pool with her (and who wouldn’t?). This woman could have won an Oscar for this performance, particularly when she gets zapped by the alien’s raygun and turns instantly into bones. Now that’s acting. I doubt there are many, if any, actresses in Hollywood today who can turn into bones on demand like that.

But outside of the many meaningful performances one will find here can be found the unique aesthetic vision of the director. It’s here you’ll find a world chock full of pomaded hair on cute ’50s boys, great shots of vintage automobiles whizzing hither and tither, and giant alien crustaceans. And what a world it is — sort of like a space-age, suburban Bali Hai, but located in the outskirts of Baltimore circa 1959.

I was so awed by this masterpiece that I created a cocktail for viewers to consume while watching the film. It’s called the Teenagers from Outer Space Cocktail, and is made up of: 1 cup pineapple juice, 1/3 cup coconut rum, and a dash of Blue Curacao. Serve over ice, and garnish with a plastic lobster.

Cave Party: Set to a calypso beat, albeit a somewhat dated version of the genre. The friends go back in time to the Ice Age to howl at the moon, and invent some pretty useful things along the way.

Race Around the World: Not sure of the music genre here, but the friends take part in a tough race involving running through the jungle, snowboarding, kayaking across the ocean and hiking across the desert.

Eureka: A couple of crusty old prospectors and a couple of brilliant scientists join forces to find gold and dinosaur bones in them thar hills

Castaways: To a Bossa Nova beat, three castaways get a little help from a mysterious benefactor to survive on a deserted island.

Another excellent source of entertainment for kids and the adults who love them.

We’re big backyardigans fans at our house. Our 1.5-year-old son is mesmerized by the show, the characters are cute and very watchable, and the music is suprisingly entertaining and listenable even after many, many viewings.

The bonus episodes on this disc are “Eureka” and “Castaways,” both of which feature some of the best music in the entire series. The featured episodes “Cave Party” and “Race Around the World” episodes are also pretty good, making this the best of the Backyardigans releases so far. This is the one I would recommend to anyone who wants to sample the series — just put on “Eureka,” and try to stop yourself from singing along!

Happily, the next DVD will feature “Surf’s Up,” which ranks up there with “Eureka” and “Castaways” in our book.

A big thanks to Nick Jr. and Paramount for releasing this great series on DVD so quickly.

The setup for the story had all the right ingredients. The mood was set, the characters showed promise, and then… Nothing. Within the first 30 minutes, Ray Charles could see what was going on. The rest of the movie is spent driving the point home, as if it were really necessary. Could have been fun. Turned out to be a boring waste of time.

Abandoned reminded me quite a bit of an Asian film called The Echo (aka, Sigaw) — and a few others; it’s nothing new in the genre, but aside from a severely sagging midsection, the horror and suspense aspects are far from, er, abandoned by first-time director Nacho Cerdà. This is no doubt a low-budget film with a lot of spoken supposition, running and hiding; however, when the creatures are shown, they don’t disappoint. The makeup is well-done, and special effects are wisely kept to a bare minimum.

The gloomy, yet sharply rendered imagery from cinematographer Xavi Gimenezs (The Machinist) adds to grim terror experienced by our protagonists, as does the jangling dissonance of the original score by Alfons Conde.

While I will admit I was pretty bored during the middle of the movie (I don’t mind when things get talky, but nothing new was added to the suspense via the dialogue), it rallies in the end and has a satisfying, fittingly unsettling conclusion.

Some films may be predictable, with minimal storyline and action sequences and still be a hit. THE BOYS AND GIRL FROM COUNTY CLARE hits that description on target. This is an emerald of a jaunty little Irish tale that thoroughly entertains with a fine cast and superb Irish music and leaves the audience wholly satisfied – AND has a fine social comment!

The setting is County Clare where the International Irish Music festival is at hand. For years John-Joe McMahon (Bernard Hill) and his little band have won the ceili (Irish dance music) band competition. Members of his hometown orchestra include young Anne (Andrea Corr) and her unmarried grumpy piano-playing mother Maisie (Charlotte Bradley). Word comes round that John-Joe’s long estranged brother Jimmy (Colm Meaney) has a band from Liverpool, a band that includes Liverpudlian types including young and handsome flautist Teddy (Shaun Evans) and is aimed in the direction of the Festival to compete. In fine Irish tradition the two mutually angry brothers try to sabotage each other’s appearance, but alas they both come face to face in the competition. With Jimmy’s arrival we discover that Maisie’s negative outlook comes from the fact that Jimmy is the one who wantonly got her pregnant and Anne is Jimmy’s daughter. Maisie is forced to admit to Anne her betrayal of ancestry news and the mother/daughter relationship is strained to the breaking point.

Anne and Teddy (naturally) fall for each other and the two of them decide to return to Liverpool after the festival ends with neither’s band the winner. This development is threatening to Maisie and she finally confronts Jimmy with her pent up resentment and disappointment. How the young ones cope with their situation and emotions and resolve the problem of distance is the finale of this sweet story and is best left to the viewer to discover.

The acting is homogeneously fine with the comedy and drama in fine balance. And oh the music! Director John Irvin has created a little jewel of a film that warms the proverbial cockles of your heart. Grady Harp, September 05

Brother against brother is the overarching theme of this gem of a movie, but the driving force throughout is its music. I’ve always enjoyed Irish music, but until watching this film, I had never heard of a ceili band. Now I’ll be on the lookout for a CD or two.

Oh yeah, the brother against brother thing? It’s a conflict that’s contested through music, in this case the annual Ceili Band Contest. Two brothers, John Joe, the older one stayed on the farm in Ireland, while Jimmy left for Liverpool shortly after getting his girlfriend pregnant. After 26 years of estrangement, Jimmy returns to the ceili competition with his band, hoping to interrupt the two year championship reign of John Joe’s band. Avoiding the fray thus far is a third brother Padjo, a missionary priest off in Africa. At least we think Padjo has been avoiding the fray.

John Joe (Bernard Hill from the Lord of the Rings series) is a man at peace with himself and his music, although not so much at peace that he can’t respond to the imminent arrival of his sibling’s band with a delaying dirty trick or two. His band includes the scorned girlfriend of his brother, Maisie, and her daughter, Ann (luminously played by Andrea Corr of The Corrs musical group).

Jimmy (Colm Meaney from The Commitments and The Snapper, two other excellent Irish movies) has led a materially prosperous life in Liverpool that’s been somewhat emotionally bereft; as evidenced by his testy attitude and his multiple ex-wives. His band features a mix of old pro musicians along with some young talent that provokes his ire with an occasional foray into jazz.

The bands serve as musical Montagues and Capulets, as Ann meets and falls in love with Teddy (Shaun Evans). Ann has never met her father, and Maisie would have never come to the competition had she known that Jimmy would be there.

Well then, brotherly conflict, an embittered fallen woman of a certain age, a young woman conflicted about the father she never knew, and young lovers from different factions of a competition… is that enough to keep your interest?

To be honest though, you could almost ignore the successful efforts of a marvelous cast and a great story that is well told, because the music is fantastic! I haven’t felt this good since I saw “Brassed Off” (a similar movie about a brass band competition England). And as John Joe remarks at one point, “if you have the music… you’re never alone.”

Hitchcock’s macabre classic finally gets its due on this DVD Collector’s Edition. The film, which by turns thrills (the various bird attacks) and amuses (the frequently bantering dialogue), is presented in all its widescreen glory — an important consideration for Hitchcock enthusiasts, given the director’s meticulous planning of his films’ visual compositions. “The Birds” features some great cinematography, a nerve-wracking soundtrack, and some finely wrought performances (particularly those of Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Ethel Griffies); all are well-served by the film-to-DVD transfer. There are a wealth of bonus features, including newsreel footage of Hitchcock and Hedren publicizing the film, an extensive stills gallery, and a fascinating behind the scenes production documentary. Especially intriguing are the ad-libbed screen test clips pairing Hedren with “Psycho” player Martin Balsam while Hitchcock provides verbal instructions off-camera! All in all, a most welcome addition to my DVD collection, and one I’m pleased to recommend for yours.

Alfred Hitchcock apparently spent the better part of two years trying to find subject matter that he felt would be worthy of a follow up film after 1960’s PSYCHO. He bought Daphne duMaurier’s short story, “The Birds”, and very quickly decided that he would only retain the title, and the bird attack plot point. Evan Hunter and Hitchcock crafted the screenplay structure, and after a staggering amount of technical pre-production, Hitchcock made THE BIRDS. It opened to huge acclaim from the public, if not critics, and is one of the master of suspense’s best remembered pictures. As it should be. And with the stunning new DVD edition, this terrific movie at last gets the home video treatment it so richly deserves.

The transfer is immaculately sharp and clear, letterboxed at the 1.85:1 ratio used for theatrical exhibition, and the mono digital sound is clean and vibrant. The letterboxing actually gives the film more breathing room, and some of the sequences, especially the complex technical passages such as the attack on the school, and the spectacular attack on the town, have a visceral punch that’s ratcheted up by the clarity of the digital image and sound. Don’t be put off by the many sodium process shots that were necessitated by the demands of the screenplay; they are perfectly cut into the film, and give the movie a primitive realism that is perfectly in keeping with Hitchcock’s stylized view of reality. His films are all designed within an inch of their lives, and the audience is all the better for it.

The extras on this collector’s edition are quite valuable. A featurette entitled “All About The Birds” presents interviews with actors Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Veronica Cartwright, along with various technical personnel, and is lively and full of information about the film’s production. Also featured are Tippi’s screen test, production notes, a trailer, and web links. This is one package that beautifully showcases a film which gets better each time you see it.

Sometimes everything can come together when crafting a good anime. It has happened again with Witch Hunter Robin. This is definitely not your fan boy’s anime. You won’t find any beauty contests, beach episodes, goofy pets, or other lighter anime standards. What we do find here; is a solid storyline, beautifully drawn, well animated scenes, excellent music, and interesting characters.

It’s difficult to create the dark tone of an anime, without looking like its been forced. There is seriousness to the story, that’s rarely seen in an animated show. In fact, it may be a small flaw, that it lacks sufficient comedy relief. The first few episodes, play like something out of early X-Files. Its important to stay tuned. As the show starts to heat up, it becomes a “must have more episodes now”, by about mid-series. One word of warning, for buying later episodes, you may want to wait till they are all obtainable. You may not be able to stand the wait, for the final chapters.

On the story itself, it unfolds as characters are developed working within the context. This is not one of those series that wastes time doing mind-numbing introductions. The characters, and their roles become apparent, as the story plays out. This is the best way to learn about them, because it keeps the viewer involved, and does not pander to overly casual viewers.

The full series of Witch Hunter Robin spans 26 episodes, and does a nice job of completing the story. That is significant, as many anime designed for multiple seasons, have very poor endings. It appears this series was designed to start, and reach completion, within the 26 episodes made. I cannot speak for the dubbing, but the voice work on the Japanese track is quite excellent. Hopefully the dub will be just as good.

Witch Hunter Robin is probably one of the best Anime I’ve seen yet. I’m usually a tradition oldschool Anime kind of guy. I’m also a picky b*stard. I was always a Bubblegum Crisis, Dangaioh, Megazone 23 kind of guy. It was probably the great music in them. Even though the music in Anime today isn’t as rememberable as some oldschool Anime, the story lines are way great. Well there are exceptions, and Witch Hunter Robin had some great music. Remember guys, Witch Hunter Robin was by the makers of Cowboy Bebop, and you probably will be expecting a lot out of it. Don’t expect too much, because Cowboy Bebop was the best (1998). But still, even when my expectations were high, Witch Hunter Robin was still great and overall quality, and it deserves five stars. The dialogue and everything is detailed. Beautiful animation, Well it was made in 2002 If you’re the type that likes to discover new Anime and like taking risks to buy Anime that you’ve never seen and hope to love, this is the right one. Telling you this kind of defeats the purpose of taking risks. Well yeah, it’s awesome, again music is awesome, and characters are cool. This release is l33t!

Some people write in their reviews the movie is braindead, stupid and not funny at all. Well, it depends on what kind of humor you prefer. If you like Tarantino, Coen brothers, Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”, films like “Thursday”, “Get Shorty” and “Way of the Gun”, then this opus is just for you. If you can’t stand all of the listed above – just skip this one.

To my opinion “Snatch” is much better then previous Ritchie’s work, more than that – it’s one of the best criminal comedies. It’s more criminal than others, it’s more funny than others. Guy Ritchie actually did his best here and created an atmosphere of absurd, chaotic fun. The acting is perfect, Brad Pitt is totally different from what we used to see, Dennis Farina is just soooo hilarious! Now I can’t normally see him in other movies – I recall “Snatch” and begin to laugh hysterically.

The characters’ lines are funny and the way they deliver them is even funnier. By the way it’s one of the few films I had to watch with captions – I couldn’t understand much of being said because of their cockney (if I’m not mistaken) accent.

Anyway if you like crazy criminal comedies – watch it without any question. If you don’t – watch something else instead.

I purchased this item and found that disk one was the old superbit edition without the commentary track. I emailed Sony and they quickly responded saying that this was a mistake with the first production run. If you mail in disk 1 along with the proof of purchase and copy of the email from Sony, they will send you the proper disk 1. So, if you have this dvd with the wrong disk one, just email Sony and they will tell you what to do.

Please stop whining about this DVD’s aspect ratio. It’s not “full-screen.” It’s widescreen with the original top and bottom sections restored.

According to film historian David P. Hayes, THE STING was filmed in 4:3 (equivalent to “full-screen”) ratio because director George Roy Hill wanted it to look like an old movie. The studio (and/or the exhibitors) apparently had second thoughts about it, though, so theatrically-released prints had the top and bottom sections blocked (”matted”) to fit the widescreen format.

What you see on this DVD is not “pan and scan” (with missing left and right content), but the original format with the top and bottom restored.

I just bought this DVD for my father because this movie IS a classic, no matter what anyone says. But, when it came in the mail, I was surprised to see “Full Screen” on the front of the box. So I did what many of you did NOT do (with the exception of reviewer cammonro dated Sept 2, 2003), I went to the Universal web site and emailed their Home Entertainment division.

‘The Sting’ is only available on DVD in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio, which in this case displays the same picture information side-to-side as was seen theatrically. Also, more information is shown top-to-bottom than in the theatrical version because of the way the film was originally shot.

One process used in creating movies for theatrical exhibition is to place ‘mattes’ over the top and bottom of the 35 mm film frame to alter the aspect ratio to 1.85:1 ‘Widescreen.’ To avoid black letterboxing bars on the top and bottom of the picture when it is displayed on standard television, the original mattes are removed in a process known as ‘Open Matte.’ (This is not to be confused with ‘Pan & Scan,’ a completely different process of transferring film to Video and DVD.) ‘Open Matte’ was used with in the production of ‘The Sting.’

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. For all of you complaining about how this DVD is PAN-AND-SCAN, you are WRONG. And for all of you still waiting for WIDESCREEN, you ALREADY HAVE IT with this DVD if you understand what Universal is saying above; you are actually seeing MORE than what you’d see in the theater version because of the “Open Matte” process Universal used, NOT pan-and-scan.
