EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS was not well received by the critics and it did poorly at the box office–and frankly I’m surprised. Obviously we’re not talking about “deep meanings” in reference to this film, but what it does, it does extremely well: part hommage, part spoof, part horror, part comedy, and all of it a tremendous amount of fun! The film is essentially the classic 1950s “big bug” movie brought up to date and given a comic spin. A truck driver skids on the road and accidentally releases toxic chemicals into a pond; unfortunately, an “exotic spider farm” happens to be nearby, and when the spiders are contaminated by the chemicals they explode into creatures of monstrous proportions, nasty dispositions, and insatiable appetites. Cats, dogs, and even the occasional ostrich goes missing–can human victims be far behind?

The cast plays expertly, and two deserve special mention: Doug E. Doug, who is hilarious as the independent radio station broadcaster obsessed with UFOs, aliens, and government cover-ups, and Eileen Ryan as the chain-smoking, drop-dead-talking Aunt Gladys. But although every one does well with their often-comic characters, the emphasis isn’t on the cast: it’s on special effects, sight-gags, and a traditional “big bug” plot played at a breakneck speed. It’s all smoothly, slickly done, and the special effects are terrific without going into overkill.

Now, the film is rather icky: after all, the spiders jump and bite and slurp, and when the townfolk go after them with everything from guns to pitchforks to chainsaws they also splatter in an appropriately disgusting way. Some viewers will be turned off by the black humor of the piece–particularly as it references the pets that go missing early on in the film. (I admit I winced a bit myself there!) Some viewers may be turned off by the “ick” factor and the violence, of which there is aplenty; others may take issue with the plot itself, which as noted is pretty traditional. But this isn’t an Ingmar Bergman or Fellini film we’re talking about here, and if you want a modern twist on a classic sci-fi theme, EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS is sure to please. The DVD has several extras, some of which are fun as well. On the whole, I give it four big squishes!

This is a fun throwback to the world of monster bug movies…an ode sort-of-speak to the classic movies about giant ants and spiders that eat everyone in sight. Stir in David Arquette and Doug E. Doug for humor, add the sausy Scarlett Johansson for…me…and you have an action spider funny whatchamacallit movie that is worth watching. The humor is high, and the CGI is brilliant despite what some idiot said about “it could have been better” and “there were no shadows”…um…who cares…the spiders looked cool. So, theres toxic crap that mutates the spiders into HUGE monsterous killing machines and they destroy and terrorize this small mining town. Believe me, it’s funny. I enjoyed it, if not for the humor and CGI, for the beauty that is Scarlett Johansson! Grrrrrrrr

Being a Swayze fan and being sad about his health, and now his death, I was looking for some of his work I had not seen. The customer reviews of this movie spiked my interest. It is a very good movie, but it is long so plan the time to watch it accordingly. Swayze’s charcter in this movie is similar to his character in his last work, “The Beast”, which aired last season on A&E TV (exceptional work). My husband and I watched it together and both enjoyed it. We will keep it in our home media library to enjoy again. I recommend it both as a good movie and to Swayze fans.

This is a fast paste and interesting TV movie. The intigue and action kept my interest from start to finish. The acting is superb.

The premise of “THE INVASION OF TIME” is simple, but genius: WHAT IF… the Doctor became EVIL? “Invasion” is a sequel of sorts to the Doctor’s last visit to his homeworld of Gallifrey in “Deadly Assassin” in which the Doctor saves the Timelords from the Master and in doing so becomes the sole surviving candidate in an election to determine the Timelord Presidency. The story opens with the Doctor apparently selling out his people to anonymous alien invaders. The Doctor berates and expels his companion, Leela and betrays his old Timelord mentor Borusa and before long succeeds in arranging the conquest of the planet. Once revealed, the invaders turn out to be B list, working for the Sontarans (as seen in this season’s DW series 4, the “Sontaran Stratagem”). The Sontaran want control over time itself, via the relics of the President’s office and the help of the Lord President of the Timelords a.k.a The Doctor…Once the Doctor’s plan is revealed things really get complicated…a rebellion against the traitorous Doctor is underway, ultimately leading up to a battle for Gallifrey, even including a “unforgettable” chase through the deep recesses of the Doctor’s TARDIS.

Some of the best moments of the story include conversations between the overbearing Lord Doctor and Borusa, his teacher’s current & most memorable incarnation played by John Arnatt. Tom Baker is in top form when he in his over-the-top megalomaniacal glory for the first half of the story. The climatic TARDIS chase is memorable, not for the execution, which isn’t so good, but the sense of the transdimensional nature of the Doctor’s craft. The scenes in the TARDIS really convey the limitlessness and spark the imagination for the possibilities in store for the new series, hopefully. K9 mark I. and Leela say their farewells, but what’s not so memorable, the unbelievable romance between the warrior woman Leela and the sheltered Captain of the Guard, Andred. Equally forgettable are some effects on the second string invaders, the Vardans, worse than their horrible shroud images is their actual physical form in some sort of cross between a WWII paratrooper and a TV news cameraman. One major flaw of the finale of the 6 part story is having the Doctor solve the conflict with a gadget, especially when that gadget is for all intents and purposes a big gun! Even fans new to the series, know “the Doctor just `ain’t down with `dat!”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – The Invasion of Time! Click Here

For all of it’s script troubles, plot and FX flaws, Invasion is a must own for any Doctor Who fan, for it’s many Timelord and Tardis milestones and because the Sontarans have just been revamped. Besides, this is history.

“Invasion” Drinking Game

Drink….

…everytime Gallifrey is saved from “the invaders.”

…when Leela kills ( or throttles ) someone.

…everytime RASSILON is mentioned (the Presidential induction provides loads of these.)

…when you see the same BBC car-park stairwell in the TARDIS.

…when a Sontaran trips on patio furniture.

Time was one luxury that those involved in the making of “The Invasion of Time” had none of. After receiving an utterly unworkable script soon before things were supposed to get started, the producer and script editor had to team up and dash this one off at the last minute, making sure to incorporate only pre-existing sets and costumes since barely any leeway existed for crafting new ones. As if that weren’t enough, filming had to be hurriedly scheduled so as to avoid inevitable strikes at the BBC looming on the horizon. Everything seems to have been working against them, in short, and yet somehow they pulled off one of the more unusually intriguing and unique Doctor Who stories of the 1970’s.

How? Partly by making a virtue of necessity. The story returns us once again to the Doctor’s home world of Gallifrey (for which sets and costumes still remained from Doctor Who: The Deadly Assassin (Episode 88)), a rather tedious and drearily bureaucratic place enlivened only by petty political maneuvering and backstabbing, a society resting on its laurels after having achieved all it could ever achieve ages beforehand. Into this bland uneventfulness come the Doctor and his knife-wielding companion Leela, throwing everyone for a loop–including the viewer, as the Doctor begins to act more and more erratically, more and more like the very type of power-mad dictator he usually fights against. Tom Baker pulls this off with superb finesse, giggling (for instance) with wickedly barking mad glee as he supposedly introduces his fellow Time Lords to their conquerors, his apparent accomplices the Vardans. The writers keep us going for quite a while, too, finally revealing only rather late into the story that this is all but a risky yet clever stratagem on the Doctor’s part to hoodwink the Vardans and save the day, expertly timing this revelation just exactly before the moment our confusion would’ve shifted into active dislike for our erstwhile hero.

Still, for all that, the strain shows. The concept behind the Vardans’ threatening power–the ability to travel instantly along any wavelength, including that of thought–is as highly original as it is indeed formidable, but the less than special effect used to depict them (rattling tin foil superimposed onto the screen) is so dismal as to be distracting even to longtime fans tolerant of the show’s chronic shortcomings in this area. Their humanoid form is not much more impressive, and then in an uncomfortable moment of anticlimax intended apparently to keep the story going for another two episodes at all costs, the Sontarans replace the Vardans with little real rhyme or reason. Don’t get me wrong, the Sontarans are great, but this isn’t their gig (shouldn’t they be busy with the Rutans?), and limited physical beings with conventional space weaponry that they are, they seem much less a threat to the Time Lords than the prior Vardans. Second of all and in a similar vein, the frankly ingenious idea of having a chase through endless labyrinths within the Doctor’s dimensionally transcendental vehicle the Tardis is sadly let down by actuality, it being painfully obvious that these are just old musty hallways in some building in England (a defunct mental hospital, as it turns out). Finally, Leela is swiftly and abruptly written out at the conclusion in an implausibly ridiculous manner glaringly inconsistent with her character–a particularly deplorable lapse for me, Leela being one of my favorite companions.

Given the circumstances, though, these problems are less surprising than the fact that it all ultimately beats the odds and holds together pretty dang well as an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable Doctor Who adventure. Some very memorable supporting characters contribute a lot to this success, including the Doctor’s old mentor Borusa, venerable and yet foxily savvy, and the obsequiously scheming Castellan. On a larger scale, there is just something dreadfully compelling about the idea of an advanced society presuming itself invulnerable and so being taken off guard, and the unseemly politics of occupation are portrayed as convincingly as possible given the show’s format. Finally, some of the off-the-wall oddball humor considered so typical of the Fourth Doctor really comes to the fore here, including a daring though momentary aside to the audience. Probably no other show could get away with this and still count as good solid serious science fiction, and on that strength alone “The Invasion of Time” manages as a fine example of classic Doctor Who, not to mention grace under pressure.

Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda star in the critically acclaimed movie based on the true events of a serial killer that killed 13 women from 1962 to 1964. This movie takes a documentary style approach in following the investigators as they piece together the clues behind a seemingly random series of murders. Fonda stars as police detective John S. Bottomly and Curtis co-stars as Albert DeSalvo, the man who eventually confessed to the crimes. Of particular interest on this DVD is the inclusion of the 21-minute Backstory documentary on the movie that originally appeared on the AMC cable channel, interviewed on camera are Tony Curtis (who gushes with his appreciation of the movie), the director Richard Fleischer and producer Richard Zanuck. Also featured is a three-minute Fox Movietone newsreel of the actual events that appears to be missing part of its audio track. Rounbding out the special features is a selection of eight trailers including a theatrical trailer and teaser for the main feature that are both in wodescreen with excellent picture and only a slightly distorted (from age) audio track. This is an excellent movie and DVD – recommended.

Tony Curtis gives the best performance of his life! The Boston Strangler is without a doubt the greatest camera work I have ever seen, split screen, widescreen, multi camera frames on one screen. Mr. Fleischer you made a real piece of artwork that will stand the test of time! The camera tell’s and reminds you how each seen is played out on a multi pictured screen! It is a puzzle that you have to put together in your mind , a lot of fun! Tony you played the greatest Psychological character I have ever seen on screen! I know because of my own experiences. Albert De Salvo the real Boston Strangler while in prison made 2 leather wallet’s, in which he gave them to Dir. Fleischer & com. Tony did not receive one! (I guess De Salvo did not like my performance Tony once said!) This is a rare one! A must see! Thank you Tony for one of the greatest performances!

This video is slow – good for small children who shouldn’t be exposed to lots of flashing movement. The classical music is nice. The videography is nothing to write home about, but there are plenty of animals to be seen. My 18 month old daughter oohs and aahhs over them all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Baby Genius – A Trip to the San Diego Zoo! Click Here

What I cannot fathom is why the creators decided to superimpose cartoon animal pop-ups on the screen every minute or so. It is incredibly annoying and seems so out of place!

I thought this DVD a bit slow, but I gave it 4 stars because my nieces really like it. This was given as a gift to my son but my boys don’t care much for it. I think it just depends on what types of videos the child it’s intended for enjoy. My boys like DVDs with a lot of music and singing (i.e. Blue’s Clues, Veggie Tales) and this one is not for them.

My oldest son loves trips to the zoo, so this DVD might be better if it had animal noises in it as well as the music.

I think it’s a fantastic concept and maybe the boys will grow to like it, but right now it seems to not interest them.

I remember seeing Rikyu in the theater, and it is a gem. The DVD transfer, however, is far and away the worst I have ever seen–so dark that frequently you cannot tell who is speaking, or even what characters are in the scene. So contrasty that all details in the shadows and highlights are washed out. The quality of the video distracts horribly from the story.

Avoid this print. Eventually, they will have to produce a better one.

The low rating I gave was for the DVD, which is miserable. The aspect ratio is ignored and, sadly, no attempt is made to remaster the VHS print. The story is magnificently told by Teshigahara – a central episode in Japanese cultural history, when two forces sought to influence the future of Japanese aesthetics. Hideyoshi, who was more or less Japan’s Lord Protector, disputed his master Rikyu in matters of taste. Rikyu advocated subtlety (the term “jimi”), while Hideyoshi, the flagrant extrovert, pushed for ostentatiousness (”hade”). Since Rikyu was a mere monk and would not back down from his views on matters of taste (making Hideyoshi appear ridiculous with his solid-gold tea-ceremony chambers), who eventually won the debate was another demonstration of Hideyoshi’s relentless “hade.” If you look at modern Japan, the two forces are still at odds. A splendid film, poorly served by this DVD. I have a VHS copy I purchased in Japan from Shochiku Video for about $30, letterboxed (with no subtitles). You need to know a great deal about Japanese history to follow everything, as an earlier viewer pointed out. Don’t let it daunt you, though. An added attraction is the music of the Japanese modernist composer Toru Takemitsu, who wrote music for Woman in the Dunes as well.

Naruto Shippuden is a little different from the early Naruto years. But it is high octane adrenaline! The action and story line arc takes up to 30 episodes before Sai comes into the picture. The only dissappointment I feel is in Viz Media, why are they bothering to release Shippuden 1 disc (4 episodes) at a time? They should go directly to box sets! And by box sets I mean, they should carry at least 20 episodes or more. Shipuden season 1 is like 50 or more episodes, each season is huge! Viz Media, why must you milk us of our hard earned money and give us so little in return?! Anyone who buys this disc or the previous disc in this series, I suggest you hold off watching them until you have disc 10 in hand, these episodes catch you and never let you go, you will writhe in agony until the next release!

These episodes will get to show us how much the other Konoha 11 have grown since Naruto has been away from his friends and teachers, as you see Naruto reuniting with his friends and finding out what has been happening Gara finds himself locked in battle with one of the elusive Akatsuki who have been sent to the hidden sand village to capture him. AS soon as Naruto finds out he of course rushes to aid his friend and fellow jinchuriki(A Person who has a sealed tailed demon in him/her)as he journeys to the sand village with Kakashi, Sakura, and Temari what is happening to Gara ignites his own anger as he knows the Akatsuki only see him and the other jinchuriki as nothing more than monster vessels to use in their insidious scheme. The series is still very entertaining and follows the manga series almost perfectly there are of course a few minor differences but nothing to big to worry about. I do hope that they’ll release uncut box sets like they did with Naruto but I guess will just have to wait an see. So for all fans rejoice again as the Shippuden episodes have finally arrived for us all to enjoy…

As the mother of twins, one hearing and one deaf, I have had the opportunity to check out many programs for teaching ASL to small children. This is by far the best series out there. Most other products are so boring that parents must struggle to stay awake during the production, and there is no way a toddler would tolerate a viewing. My 2-year-old twins request Signing Time all of the time. At home they want the DVDs playing almost constantly. In the car my hearing daughter starts asking for the Signing Time CD before I even have her strapped into her carseat. My 2-year-old deaf daughter is using 5-sign sentences, which is almost unheard of for the deaf child of hearing parents. My extended family owns a total of 6 sets of Signing Time. Whenever my daughters’ cousins have a birthday they ask for the latest Signing Time DVDs. Children of all ages love this product.

I love the entire Signing Time series as a teaching aid for hearing children.

This particular video is great for smaller kids (my daughter is a year old)- it’s attention getting, has fun music, and the signing instruction is very clear.

What I like about this video: an introduction to food words, including many toddler “favorites” (cheese, spaghetti, bread, crackers, etc), and doesn’t have much in the way of “junk food”-other than the sign for “candy”.

There is also introduction to some basic kitchen words like “cook”, and “cup”, “plate”, “fork”, etc.

This is a great video if you have graduated beyond the basics of “milk”, “cereal”, “mommy” and “daddy”.

The “Silly Pizza Song” is especially fun, and my daughter and I always have a good time trying to sign along with Rachel to it.

A fair sampling of Hollywood’s highest paid stars flew to Italy, set up a camera, and threw a party. It looked like they had a lot of fun.

Ocean’s Eleven was a watchable movie, nothing to write home about but at least those involved didn’t have to hang their heads in shame. This sequel however is one of the most uneven pointless sequels I’ve ever seen. The worst flaw of this film is simply put…it is BORING. There is also a really preposterous scene with Julia Roberts character playing Julia Roberts…maybe one of the dumbest things I’ve ever scene in a film. George Clooney and Brad Pitt walk through this movie acting like they’re the coolest hippest dudes on planet earth, sorry chaps but the jokes on you, Matt Damon seems cooler than you two arrogant chumps put together. Dumb, dumb, and just dumb. The story is so mediocre and silly that it’s no wonder the acting is sub par. The best thing about this movie is the nap you can take while it’s on.
