Funniest zombie comedy I’ve seen since “Return of the Living Dead: Part 2″

This movie was wildly hilarious!!!

It’s so silly that it can’t help but be hilarious.

And you’ll see that right away.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis! Click Here

From the gags to the costumes to the ADD pace.

It moves like a hyperactive, Speedy Gonzalez hopped up on rocket-fuel.

And that goes for the sub-titles as well.

They speed by, as the movie races along it’s ridiulous path, often leaving some lines totally unreadable.

The gore is magnificent & plentiful.

Once it starts spraying it doesn’t stop.

And the zombies look great too!!

The jokes are low-brow, ludicrous, & funny,

often poking fun at its influences, its audience, and itself.

After 2 viewings I gotta admit…

this movie is absurdly rewatchable,

just like Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail.

(Imagine that rabbit scene stretched over two hours.)

I couldn’t stop laughing the entire movie,

it’s still echoing in my chest.

It’s stupid, it knows it stupid, and it loves what it is.

If you don’t mind wildly ridiculous zombie comedies,

And you want to laugh until you hyperventilate,

This one is a madman. (but it’s definitely not for everyone)

So put on your rain-coat and fasten your oxygen mask,

‘Cause once the blood starts pouring, you’re gonna choke on your own laughter.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

When a movie contains a light-saber battle with a giant zombie snake,

you know you’re in for Bangkok Zombie Crisis.

SARS WARS is a wonderfully silly, gory, irreverent and absurd zombie comedy with pretty high production values by Thai standards. An outbreak of a mutant strain of the SARS virus turns the residents of a tower block into zombies, and a motley bunch of heroes end up fighting to survive. The film is relentlessly daft, spoofing numerous popular culture references (especially KILL BILL) and sending itself up with comments directly to (or about) the audience. The tone is cheerfully low brow – it’s great to see foreign cinema get released in the US that doesn’t pander to the “arthouse” crowd (and isn’t a martial arts film) for a change. Discotek media deserve credit – and sales – for their bravery in putting it out.

While Sam Elliott has become (along with, perhaps, Tom Selleck) the personification of the Louis L’Amour screen hero, it’s especially nice in CONAGHER to see him opposite one of the first ladies of western cinema, Katherine Ross. It’s especially nice when one remembers that Ms. Ross is also Mrs. Elliott in real life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Conagher! Click Here

The two provide a power-packed performance in bringing Louis L’Amour’s classic western tale to life. CONAGHER is the story of an honorable cowhand who almost single-handedly takes on a gang of marauders bent on doing all the damage they can to everyone they meet. Yes, a classic battle of good against evil ensues but it’s done sincerely and lacks some of the schmaltz that surfaces in similar western sagas.

Add to Elliott and Ross an all-star western cast including Dub and Buck Taylor, Barry Corbin and Ken Curtis and you have an enduring western classic.

THE HORSEMAN

I’m a fan of westerns but I don’t believe there are very many good ones. But this is a good one, it’s a good movie besides being a good western. One relief I got from it was I finally got to see a modern western without it making a political statement. All the actors in this show are good. Made me feel like I was really there. I missed “Johnnie” though, the guy who was Chris Mahler’s partner and decided to stay with Conagher when Mahler rode off. I wish he had been in the movie longer. Conagher is a tough cow puncher who doesn’t have to look for trouble, it has a way of finding him. His life begins to change after he meets Katherine Ross (Evie) and her two kids. Her husband is killed in an accident unbeknownst to them while he goes to buy cattle. Months go by and they know its been too long and he’s not coming back. Elliot looks his part, a man who’s had a hard life but survived it through thick and thin, mostly thin. Filmed in Colorado, the location and the music match the story well.

First off, one needs to know that this DVD does NOT contain the famous 1939 “Wizard of Oz” film with Judy Garland. Instead, these are earlier films, all silent, based on the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The author himself started a film company in 1914 to make these, so 3 of the 4 films here, “The Patchwork Girl of Oz,” “The Scarecrow of Oz,” and “The Magic Cloak,” were made in 1914 by his company. The fourth one, “The Wizard of Oz,” is from 1925 and is a comedy version that strays a great deal from the original story. It features an early performance of Oliver Hardy, one half of the Laurel & Hardy duo that formed several years later. These silent films are moderately interesting and clever, and often funny. The picture quality varies a good bit, but overall is good considering their age. The special effects are amazingly good for that era too. All the films are tinted in various colors, sometimes overdone for my taste. As is typical with silent films, these are accompanied by on-sceen text for dialogue and explanations, and all have a musical score throughout. Also, this DVD is a great value as it’s over 4 hours long. In sum, these 4 Oz films cannot be expected to replace the 1939 “Wizard of Oz” with its sumptuous production values including the unforgettable Judy Garland, but these should be seen as additions to that and are worth seeing in their own right.

These movies are a must have for any Oz fan. Fans who are familiar with the other Oz books will be glad to know that at least one of Baums’ sequels was made into a film-”The Patchwork Girl Of Oz”. The film “His Majesty,The Scarecrow Of Oz”(1914)actually inspired Baum to write the book “The Scarecrow Of Oz” a year later in 1915. “The Magic Cloak” was based on a story written by Baum that was not directly related to Oz but due to the success of his Oz creation, the movie was to be set in the land of Oz. The 1925 “Wizard Of Oz” is a movie very distant from the book and MGM version, eliminating some main characters in favor of new ones as well as a different storyline; no pairs of ruby slippers, no munchkins, a yellow brick road or even a witch. The new music dubbed into the movie is good, however it is never matched with any of the action or scenes. It’s about 2 different songs for each movie that keep repeating themselves when the other is done. Each movie is also tinted. “The Patchwork Girl” is tinted a dark yellow-almost orange. “His Majestey, the Scarecrow” is tinted green, “The Magic Cloak” is yellow and “Wizard Of Oz” (1925) is tinted blue. A fun collection of movies for a generous price.

I have been an avid baseball fan since 4 yrs. old. (1951) I am a collector of baseball sports memorabilia going back to late 20’s. The series, “When it was a game” was an absolute delight. It finally placed faces to names I have collected for over 50 yrs. The 8 and 16 mm made the viewing even more spellbounding. It made me feel like I actually took the photos. It is refreshing to see my hero’s in everyday circumstances; snapshots of the best of the best as ordinary people. The movies were well-done, I was not able to stop viewing until I have watched all three DVD’s. This is the best collection of home movies of hall of famers I have ever seen. I would recommend this collection to any baseball fan who truly wants to reward himself with the very best footage of his favorite leaguer. I will cherish the entire set.

“When It Was A Game” was a labor of love, and when it was first televised on HBO the eyes of baseball fans were riveted and amazed. All 3 of these projects consist of “home movies” (usually shot in 8 mm), often shot by the players themselves. But almost all of these films are in vivid color – and to see the names that haunt Cooperstown in lifelike tones is an almost religious experience. It would be similar if it were possible to see color footage from the Civil War or the Constitutional Convention. Okay – I’m stretching it a little, but not by much. Baseball fans have always had a little historian in them, and although you’d be hard-pressed to find, for example, the sports fanatic who could tell you how many touchdown passes Unitas threw or how many points Wilt Chamberlain wound up with, even casual baseball fans knew numbers like 61 (the number of Home Runs Roger Maris hit in 1961), 56 (the number of consecutive games Joe DiMaggio hit safely in during the summer of 1941), 714 (Babe Ruth’s lifetime home run total) and zero (the number of Brooklyn Dodgers who got on base during Don Larsen’s perfect game of 1956.) If you took only the “named events” of the New York Giants at the famed Polo Grounds you could start with “the shot heard ’round the world” (Bobby Thompson’s home run off Ralph Branca winning the 1951 National League pennant) and “the catch” (Willie Mays’ amazing over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz’ 475 foot drive to deep center field, saving the game and inspiring the Giants to win the 1954 World Series.)

For fans who like their baseball heroic, “When It Was A Game” brings their heroes to full-color life.

Appropriate music and reverent narration add to the historic but vibrant qualities of the works. “When It Was A Game” was eye-catching when it debuted, and so popular that it spawned a sequel that was more or less more of the same. The third volume may be the most interesting of all (especially if you’re old enough to remember watching baseball from the 1960s on), but it also adds the historical context that the innovative National League completely dominated the old boy network of the American League because of their willingness to sign Black players like Willie Mays and Hank Aaron and Latinos like Roberto Clemente. The NL won 19 out of 20 All-Star Games starting in 1962, and this little documentary doesn’t mind saying that it was the narrow-mindedness of the American League that allowed Morgan, Stargell, Banks, Gibson, Marichal and McCovey to join Mays, Clemente and Aaron on teams that regularly trounced the other, whiter, league.

Today’s politically-correct orthodoxy, among both liberals and conservatives, holds that Islam is a beautiful religion a “religion of peace” which has been “hijacked” by extremist fanatics who abuse the doctrines of the Muslim religion to further an irreligious agenda. Pure Islam, it is said, is one of the most tolerant religious systems of the planet.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Islam: What the West Needs to Know! Click Here

I actually agree with that last statement. Pure Islam is peaceful, even egalitarian–Islam, that is, which is purified from the doctrines of Muhammad!

The fact of the matter, in all seriousness, is that nearly every barbarity we in the Judaeo-Christian (and post-Christian) West identify with the Muslim world has its origins in the teachings of historic, orthodox Islam, as explicated by the Prophet Muhammad in the Quran, the various Hadith (oral traditions committed to writing which contextualize the surahs of the Quran), and the sira (early, authoritative Muslim biographies of the Prophet). The founder of Islam was a pedophile, a rapist, and a warmonger.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Islam: What the West Needs to Know! Click Here

Indeed, those who are “abusing” and “corrupting” Islam are–thank goodness!–the true reformers (few though they are) who are working hard to alter the fundamental doctrines of Islam (such as jihad, sharia, and dhimmitude) which perpetuate barbarities such as religious persecution, misogyny, and aggressive warfare on the part of Muslims and the countries they hail from.

As Robert Spencer puts it: “While there are certainly peaceful Muslims, there is no such thing as a peaceful Islam.” (That’s a rough quotation.)

This documentary is relatively thorough, and provides the viewer with documentation. I encourage all viewers to research the work done by those experts interviewed in this documentary, to find the doctrines and history of orthodox Islam further documented. I am no scholar of Islam, and I do not read Arabic. But I know how to read, process information, double-check the primary source material, and come to a rational conclusion.

At the very least, watch this movie, and come to your own.

If you’ve been born, bred and breathe in the western culture (along with its modern-day PCness), you owe it to your family, friends and self to absorb the message of this keen docu. A fine composite of true experts lays it all out for you…..there should be no questions about what we’re facing after seeing this well-thought-out flick. There’s no longer an excuse to remain ignorant regarding islam and its plans for us. Bravo and congrats to the producers of “Islam: What the West Needs to Know”.

Given the title and subject matter- seaman- you might think that this is the latest release from Falcon (and I’m sure that they or another adult studio has certainly released their version of these classics). You’d be wrong. Horatio Hornblower is instead an epic story of honor, loyalty, and duty. Featuring bloody battles, incredible adventures, and a cast of characters as good as any ever imagined, it’s no wonder that this Emmy Award-winning series got raves from critics and the general public alike.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Horatio Hornblower: Collector’s Edition! Click Here

Based on the novels by C.S. Forester, A&E’s Horatio Hornblower was a made-for-TV series that ran from 1998-2003. The eight individual films that make up this Collector’s Edition chronicle the unlikely rise of young Horatio from lowly midshipman to powerful commander, during the early years of the Napoleonic Wars. The stories are engaging and entertaining, the production grand and lavish, and the overall result brilliant.

Nothing was spared in making these films and they’re worth watching for the visuals alone. (It’s also interesting to note that no computer generated effects were used, which makes the intensity of the battles that much more exciting to watch.) That being said, the story lines are also enthralling, the characters fully developed, and the performances powerful all around. This is a series that will keep anyone engaged; from small children to grandparents.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Horatio Hornblower: Collector’s Edition! Click Here

Each film (or “episode”) runs about an hour and a half, and each can stand independent of the others. Having said that, if you’re going to watch them all, why not watch them in order and add that much more to the experience? The underlying theme to all episodes is strong personal ethics, against all odds, and while that may sound frighteningly preachy, I assure you that the films are not.

These films/episodes have been released previously a number of times, both individually and in sets, including a Collector’s Edition that was released in 2005. If you own the 2005 set, do not buy this new set; as far as I can tell, other than extremely minor changes to the packaging, this is the same product.

Included films/episodes are :: The Duel, The Fire Ships, The Duchess and the Devil, The Wrong War, The Mutiny, Retribution, Loyalty, and Duty.

SPECIAL FEATURES

As if eight films spanning more than 13 hours weren’t enough, the special features and extras are also copious. Two of the episodes (Loyalty and Duty) feature accompanying Filmmaker Commentary, which offers an incredibly thought-provoking and historically interesting look into the making of the series, the background, and the adaptation from page to screen. An Exclusive Interview with star Ioan Gruffudd is just as spellbinding (and with the latter you get the extra bonus of his incredibly good looks!).

Three Bonus Programs (England’s Royal Warships, Sail 2000: Aboard the Eagle, and The Making of Horatio Hornblower) give an exclusive look at English ships from the past to the present, with fascinating descriptions and documentary footage on how these amazing machines are manned and run, as well as the incredible feats they’re capable of. If this isn’t enough for you, check out the Guide to Royal Warships, Nautical Terms and Definitions, and Interactive 3-D Naval Cannon, and you’ll be a master seaman in no time!

For those interested in more background on the original author, a featurette entitled About C.S. Forester is especially interesting, as is the C.S. Forester Biography.

Cast and Crew Biographies are also included, as is a Photo Gallery.

The special features presented with this set are indeed incredible, although I wouldn’t recommend sitting down and watching them all at once. In fact, it’s best absorbed (and more interesting) if you watch one film/episode and one (or part of one) special feature, then take some time to digest and reflect upon them before moving on to another helping.

Final answer :: If you’ve not seen them, this is an extremely entertaining and wonderfully produced series, not to mention an incredibly good buy. If you own the previously released Collector’s Edition however, skip this.

These DVD’s are the finest presentation of any kind that I have ever seen.

To start, the acting is near perfect from the leads to the smaller roles. In addition, the classic C.S. Forester novels have been faithfully adhered to. In closing, the atmosphere, the feel of the sea and the age of fighting sail is perfectly rendered. There have been great sea movies done over the decades; Damn the Defiant, Master and Commander, Horatio Hornblower [Gregory Peck.] These 8 movies, this collector’s edition is at the pinnacle. If you love great film making, and you love the sea, this will be the best $31.50 you will ever ever spend.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has begun releasing the lesser-known Hammer films in an economical ‘two-fer’ format, following behind MGM and their ‘Midnight Movies’ format. That’s great news for those of us who haven’t gotten around to purchasing these films individually, as they were originally offered, but bad news from those who have already bought the films when they were originally released to DVD in the single movie format at full price. The discs and special features offered though this set are the same as when they were offered in a single disc format, but now they are two for the price of one. I can’t help but wonder if the original releases weren’t selling very well, so Anchor Bay recovered them and re-released them in this more economical ‘limited edition’ sets. Who knows?

Anyway, the first film, The Four Sided Triangle (1953) is a decent melodramatic science fiction thriller dealing with, what I figure was a relatively new concept at the time, of human cloning. The story involves mainly three individuals, Bill, Robin, and Lena. Bill, coming from a solid background and a wealthy family, is the practical one, while Robin is the flipside of the coin, coming from a poor family, exhibits the dreamer-like qualities of a true visionary, but also suffers the highs and lows of what could be considered a manic-depressive personality. Lena is sort of in the middle, obviously desired by both men, although she can only choose one.

The men, fresh back from college, develop a machine that can perfectly reproduce anything, and this opens up a wealth of possible opportunities, and also allows Bill to profess his love to Lena, prompting their marriage, much to Robin’s dismay. Robin, bored with the practical applications of the machine already, looks towards new frontiers of duplicating organic matter, and decides one the process is perfected, he should like to duplicate Lena. It works, but not without complications. All in all, not a bad movie, and it seems pretty original for the time, even though it does borrow from the Frankenstein mythos a little bit. The film is slow moving, so patience is required. The surprise ending seemed a bit contrived and fantastical, but the production values were pretty good, making for an interesting, if drawn out, experience.

X – The Unknown (1957) is the much better of the two films here, presenting a very intelligent and wonderful science fiction story that presents the notion of an ancient life form that lives within the Earth and rises through a fissure, seeking out sustenance in the form of radioactive materials. Dean Jagger stars and presents a thoroughly likable character surrounded by a strong supporting cast. Some of the horror elements were quite a bit more visceral that I would have expected, but made for fun and interesting viewing leading up to a suitably climatic finish.

I really liked the notion that the creature, a giant blob of inky, gooey material, wasn’t from outer space, but something that has been on this terrestrial plane for a long time, much longer than man. I also appreciated the complications that developed as the characters discerned information about the creature, providing real depth to the story, and elevating this film above the average ‘creature feature’.

Both films look and sound great, with minimal deterioration present in the prints provided, and contain the special features related to their original, independent releases, with The Four Sided Triangle disc containing a Hammer World of Horror episode titled The Curse of Frankenstein and X- The Unknown disc the World of Horror episode titled Sci-Fi and an original trailer for the film. Also included in the case are two reproduction cards for promotional material on each film. A great value if you are coming in late in the game, and it does say limited edition on the front of the case, so supplies may be limited.

Cookieman108

“X – The Unknown” rests squarely in the “Quatermass” camp of an intelligent scientist facing off with the British military against a bizarre threat to humanity. The movie was specifically made to follow-up on the commercial success (and critical acclaim) of the very first “Quatermass” movie (”The Quatermass Xperiment) made just the year before. American actor Dean Jagger (probably best known for his role as “General Waverly” in “White Christmas”) plays the “Quatermass” character (here named Dr. Adam Royston), called in to investigate when an Army unit doing geiger-counter training exercises witnesses an earthquake and the opening of an apparently bottomless fissure. (Another tidbit – his investigative partner, police inspector McGill, is played by the most well-known of “The Prisoner”’s Number Twos, Leo McKern!) Soon afterwards (as is always the case) there’s death and destruction, and Royston has to come up with something to neutralize the menace of a creeping, radioactive blob. (The American “The Blob” wouldn’t show up for two more years.) Gruesome (for their time) special effects of melting and smoking flesh raise this apart from more timid US efforts of the day, and the soundtrack is by “Quatermass” composer James Bernard. Extraordinarliy atmospheric, filmed almost entirely at night with authentic-feeling Scottish locations, a terrific and over-looked classic from Hammer.

But wait! There’s more! Watching the opening of “The Four-Sided Triangle”, and you will be forgiven if you think immediately of “How Green Was My Valley”. We’re treated to a nostalgic look at a small English village, with a winsome voice-over by the town “Doc” (played by James Hayter, seen in “Oliver!” as well as a few “Avengers” shows). Doc tells us the story of three children, two boys and the girl they both loved. The girl (Lena) grows up to be Barbara Payton (”Bride of the Gorilla”), and the two boys Robin and Bill (John Van Eyssen and Stephen Murray) are inventors both still under her spell. She (finally!) decides on…..Robin, but Bill isn’t willing to leave it at that. With the help of a “replicator”, he creates a perfect duplicate of Lena. Too perfect, it seems, because even the duplicate prefers Robin! VERY good acting, much better than we usually see in this kind of movie. And the music is by classical composer Malcolm Arnold!

These two discs show British science fiction at its best (well, except for “Quatermass” ;-) and are a bargain at this price. I recommend them most highly!

Movie Title: Flat Top

As fiction, this is third rate. Sterling Hayden made his usual fairly flat performance, which suited the part of a Navy fighter squadron commander. His permanent scowl–or perhaps sneer–suited the role of the tough, battle-hardened flying ace trying to whip a new, untested squadron into an effective fighting force with tough love and good tactics. Richard Carlson, as his executive officer, was effective as the second-in-command who was too buddy buddy with the pilots, and thus often lost sight of the real mission: to kill Japs and win the war.

The plot is as old as fiction, and the movie is obviously low budget.

A great deal of the splendid photography came from the excellent World War II documentary film, “The Fighting Lady” (not to be confused with the Van Johnson fiction movie, “Men of the Fighting Lady”), which was filmed during actual combat on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise–the original “Big E”–whose combat record was very impressive. The shots of carrier deck action, landings, wing camera shots of enemies being shot down and ground installations being bombarded and strafed were beautiful and dramatic, and recorded actual combat with real people being killed.

The movie would certainly rate five stars, were it simply based on the photography of the action. But…

But, the problems that made it a source of derision, for me at least, were the ludicrous consequences of trying to patch together a film composed of file footage from other sources. For example, a squadron is landing F4U Corsairs aboard the flattop, (reputedly the U.S.S. Princeton, although much of the footage was actually of the U.S.S. Enterprise, which I recognized) when one member of the very same squadron made a rough landing in an AD; an Korean War era aircraft which was not even in service during the 1944 period to which the movie reputedly referred.

Or, the squadron commander was flying along in his F4U, while clearly visible though the mock-up cockpit was his squadron–flying stock footage of F6F Grumman “Hellcats.” Or when the squadron, which is referred to as the “Rosebuds” (the Navy used designations like VF-13, rather than names), is attacking a ground target in Corsairs, an excellent fighter with inverted gull wings, when suddenly, for no discernible reason, one or more of them are transformed by editing and splicing in the excellent documentary footage into an SB2C Curtis “Helldiver” dive bomber. Or when they are supposedly taking off in the pre-dawn darkness, the unmistakable flaps of an SBD Douglas “Dauntless” dive bomber are shown belching exhaust on takeoff.

Other faults abound: Navy pilots bunking in tiers of bunks in a large room, rather than two or three man staterooms, or ready rooms always shown bathed in red light, even when night flying was not the next action (red light was used to protect night vision.)

The movie was ruined for me, so far as the story was concerned, by such faux pas. It is almost as bad as the stock Pearl Harbor attack photos which replay over and over, in which the supposed Japanese attackers are shown flying the revered SBD Dauntlesses. Whoever made the first sequence of that footage should be shot for that particular mis-characterization of a famous old airplane.

But the movie is worth the price for the photography alone. Forget the story, or laugh derisively along with me.

Joe Pierre, USN (Ret)

Sterling Hayden portrays a flight group commander on an aircraft carrier. having been in the U S military, I can truthfully state that much of the film’s content was authentically done. Some content was for the average person to lighten the script, but most was factual. I would recommend this film to anyone interested in WW II.

I’m a huge fan of Third Watch and learned a while back that the reason it’s taken sooooooooooooooooo long for them to come out on DVD in the US is because of copyright issues on the AWESOME music that plays throughout the show. It’s been released in Japan for years. Sheesh! I can hardly wait to get my copy!
