For Ursula Le Guin’s devoted following, the 2002 remake of the 1980 film based on her novel may not be the stuff dreams are made of. This new adaptation omits some of the original’s most memorable developments (the racially equalized “grays” and the alien invasion). Lucas Haas stars as George Orr, a “little lost boy” haunted by his dreams, which, he claims, alter the present unbeknownst to anyone but him. James Caan (more menacing than was Kevin Conway in the original) costars as the self-promoting Dr. Haber, the therapist assigned to treat the suicidal young man. This “very productive relationship” most benefits Haber, who attempts to manufacture George’s dreams “to fit some useful function.” The requisite unforeseen consequnces ensu. Lisa Bonet is ravishing, but less impressive as George’s skeptical public defender who may be the girl of his dreams. The foreboding mood is enhanced by Angelo Badalamenti’s score, which recalls his haunting work on Twin Peaks. –Donald Liebenson

Before the boys can blink, they are caught up in a labyrinth of double-crosses that lead to a multitude of dead bodies, copious amounts of drugs, and two antiqu rifles.

Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic a la Reservoir Dogs. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quntin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since The Krays has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie’s movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequnces, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a triumph–a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. –Jeremy Storey

Directed by the dilettante husband of two famous movie stars, how good could the film be? Slashed apart by censors around the world, Legong quickly disappeared and was forgotten.

Now fully restored to its glistening two-color Technicolor by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, Legong has been revealed as a cinematic classic. With its impressive sensitivity to Balinese customs (the dance and religious rituals they filmed have become extremely important for their ethnographic valu alone) and an eye for the natural beauty of the island, the film ranks with F. W. Murnau’s Tabu as an enduring masterpiece of tropical splendor.

And in that human effort, so little explored in American films, Things We Lost in the Fire holds a luminous candle to the hope left in life–sometimes when all that seems to be left is hope. Directed by the talented Danish director Susanne Bier (Brothers), Fire is allowed to unfold almost in real time as grief washes over the family, and Berry gives one of her most memorable performances, captured mostly in tiny details that will hit the viewer in the soul. Her eyes, the carriage of her head, her slim shoulders appearing to buckle under the weight of her sorrow–Berry is well directed here and shows that her performance in Monster’s Ball was no fluke. As she begins to connect with Brian’s childhood friend Jerry (Benicio Del Toro), a new family web is woven–irregular, to be sure, but strong and comforting. Other affecting performances are given by the talented charater actor John Carroll Lynch, as Brian’s friend and neighbor, and by the heartbreaking Llewellyn, an actress of stunning range for a child so young. Things We Lost in the Fire holds a torch in the deepest darkness, and lets souls connect–a rare gift indeed. –A.T. Hurley
