It’s weird the things that get stuck in your memory. I never thought of this as an inferior film just because the formula separates itself from the RKO depression-era 30’s (the film was made in 1949), though I seem to be hearing this a lot from critics. In fact, when I first saw the dance of ‘They Can’t Take That Away from Me,’ I actually thought it was a performance from a TV special, not a movie. The performance is an exhibit, not a love scene. There’s something almost- I don’t know- *cold* about the way they move on that bare, heavily draped, stage. It’s also the first and only adagio they perform in color- which, in itself has a sense of an era ending. Nevertheless, they have the same emotional connection to each other, and at the ages of 38 and 50 respectively, they still carry off the grace and elegance. When they saunter off the stage, an excited audience breaks into applause- like they’ve been watching an act from THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW. It’s extrordinary that ten years after Rogers remade herself doing straight award-winning drama and Astaire remade himself as a solo performer and a man who could dance with just about anyone, they could settle back into one more film and not have one strain of foot or hair out of place. MGM formula and Oscar Levant aside, it’s a very nice way to end a professional marriage.

I am a huge fan of the old MGM musicals and have been more that happy with the restoration quality on every DVD transfer issued by Warners in the MGM library. The release of the “Dream Factory” collection is a fine example. These films could have been photographed yesterday (”Summer Stock” is a pure delight to watch in terms of picture quality). “Barkleys of B’way” unfortnately does not live of to the exceptional quality acheived on other films of this genre.

The DVD picture quality is very poor and dull and the sound is very muted. I was so dissappointed in this treatment. The DVD appears to have simply transfered the Video to DVD. No restoration to the picture is at all apparent. Even the trailer looks better than the movie.

The extras are fine and I can’t complain here but hey Warners, what were you thinking when you tackled this gem. Someone must have been taking a sickie!

So you know he has the skills to pit Mike Mignola’s scarlet anti-hero against an army of fairies and elves, and not make it silly. Instead, it’s a spectacular dark fantasy full of humor, action, quirky appeal, romance, and some truly astounding special effects. But what really shoves this movie over the top is Del Toro’s brilliant direction, and the stunning performance by Ron Perlman.

Decades ago, Professor Broom (William Hurt) told a small Hellboy a yuletide bedtime story about the Elf King Balor and his unstoppable Golden Army, and how the crown that controls the Army was split into thirds and divided among fairies and humans.

Well, you can’t really expect that kind of power to never be revived.

Cut to current day. Hellboy (Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe (Doug Jones) investigate a strange supernatural attack on an auction house, where the archeological curiosity known as the Crown of Bethmoora was being sold — only to be attacked by savage tooth fairies. Turns out the crown was stolen by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), a resentful young elf who is determined to take the world back from humanity — using, of course, the Golden Army.

And while Hellboy chafes against strict new commander Johann Krauss (a suit filled with ectoplasm), Abe encounters Nuada’s sister, Princess Nuala — who also happens to have the last third of the crown. But Nuada will not allow anyone to oppose him as he searches for the Golden Army’s location, and Hellboy and his friends must venture into a strange, ancient kingdom to stop him from destroying all of humanity.

The worst you can say about “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is that it sticks to the formula of the demonic outsider with a dark destiny, and his continuing romantic woes. There’s some retreading as Hellboy realizes anew that he’ll never fit into the world of humans, because he’s big and red and has horns and a tail. Okay, we got it. Next big psychological issue!

Fortunately those flaws are relatively minor ones. Del Toro is still able to spin a dark, twisted story with some truly bizarre creatures (the utterly alien, eye-winged Angel of Death), clockpunk robots, trippy underground goblin markets and a new BPRD agent who is basically ectoplasm in a suit. And for the action scenes, Del Toro does not pull punches when it comes to the smashing action scenes — giant thrashing vines and a one-on-one duel with Nuada are among the highlights.

With all this going on, it would be easy to neglect the characters. But Del Toro packs the script with solid snappy dialogue and some poignantly romantic moments — including some pretty startling actions from dear ol’ Abe. And he also adds little moments to this epic story that remind us that these are supposed to be people — such as Hellboy’s bickering with Krauss, or Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and having a little Manilow singalong together. It’s just so cute.

But what really sets this movie apart is the “children of the Earth.” No flitting Victorian sprites — these are creatures that are weird, grotesque, dangerous and immensely powerful, from nasty little tooth fairies up to vast rock monsters and plant gods. There’s an alien, bizarre aesthetic to these creatures that feels wholly real, as if Neil Gaiman casually dropped a few sketches onto the drawing board.

But as amazing as the visuals are, Del Toro never neglects the characters. Perlman is perfect for the role of “big Red” — he’s gruff, sarcastic, moody, but also endearing and self-deprecatingly likable. There are more hints of his potentially dark future, and he faces some delicately-handed temptations. But Big Red’s good heart is still very much in the forefront, no matter how much human beings fear him.

Blair gives a more lively performance here as a spunkier Liz, who also has some surprising developments in store. Jones is pitch-perfect as the fish-man, who experiences the first pangs of young love for Nuala, while Goss gives a chilling, whispery performance as a rebel prince who is willing to do whatever it takes — even kill family — if it helps him restore the fey kingdom. Pretty good villain, since he clearly isn’t trying to be bad.

There’s also loads of extras in this particular edition of the movie — feature commentary with director Guillermo Del Toro, Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair and Luke Goss, as well as some deleted scenes also with commentary with Del Toro, a prologue to the movie, a digital script, image gallery, a “Puppet Theatre” for the opening sequences of the film, concept art, interviews, and other such stuff. Also making-of documentaries — seven mini-documentaries that visit the set, the “Troll Market Tour” in the movie’s most memorable “faerie” setting, and the two-hour “Hellboy: In Service Of The Demon.” Basically, it turns the film inside-out and lets you examine its guts.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a wild, darkly ornate ride through the world of half-forgotten gods and fey. While it has a few flaws, those are far outweighed by the brilliant of Del Toro’s vision.

You know you’re not watching a formulaic comic book film when one of the highlights is a drunken rendition of “Can’t Smile Without You” by Hellboy and Abe Sapien. “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a more confident, assured outing than the first film and while it does not draw from Mignola’s comics for its plot it is perhaps better off for it, lacking the usual burden of comparison and expectations. “The Golden Army” is more fantastical than the first film and is less sci-fi oriented but this is the sort of thing Del Toro does exceptionally well as a writer. He never lets the fantasy become the focus of the film, instead concentrating on characters and delivering action scenes that can only be described as, forgive the crass immaturity, kickass.

As entertaining as many comic book-to-film adaptations are it is a rare event when one can call one of these films a true artistic achievement. I am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that Guillermo Del Toro’s entire career has been leading up to this film, particularly regarding his work as screenwriter here. The comedy feels less forced and is worked incredibly well into the script here, so much so that it doesn’t feel remotely unnatural when the scene of comic drunken singing leads directly without a break into one of the film’s most intensely dramatic sequences. Del Toro’s handling of character has never been better, not even with “The Devil’s Backbone”, which is still my favorite of his films, and his sheer skill and ability when it comes to telling a fairytale-esquire fantasy is astonishing, as proved in the prologue to this film. In short this is Del Toro at the top of his game and providing artistry the likes of which we rarely if ever see in summer blockbusters. It’s only fair that an astonishingly brilliant comic like “Hellboy” by an astonishingly brilliant artist like Mike Mignola is adapted this well and by someone as talented at what they do as he is.

How refreshing it is, a week after the release of “Hancock”, which to me epitomizes everything wrong with action film-making today, that we get “The Golden Army” which features hands down some of the finest action scenes we have ever seen in this sort of film. Just stunningly beautiful, well-shot, well-crafted, the sort of thing that leaves one wondering how much time and effort went into it and endlessly thankful that some really talented people went to the trouble of making the film.

The film is generally just superb on a technical level. Why am I even saying this? Of course it is. Danny Elfman composing, Guillermo Navarro serving as cinematographer, top-notch editors, fantastic special effects wizards. It’s a world-class crew that made this film. I shouldn’t be surprised at its quality but “The Golden Army” really just floored and astonished me with how good it is. The cast is also excellent, proving once again that you don’t need ‘big names’ to carry a movie. Just about everyone here is excellent, particularly Perlman with another excellent turn as Hellboy and the underrated Selma Blair as Liz Sherman.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” provides essentially everything a Del Toro or Mignola fan would want. I imagine it will entertain and charm many outside those circles as well with its fantastic action sequences, engaging characters, and wonderful sense of humor. I would personally go as far as calling “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” one of the top five or so comic book movies ever made.

I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I’ve had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.

The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.

The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous.

Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn’t expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.

Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted?

The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.

Whatever is haunted may also be hungry!

Monster House uses the same motion-capture technology as Zemeckis’ Polar Express but takes it to the next level. This time around, the whole context of the movie will appeal to a wider audience so this is a great opportunity to display the possibilities that this all digital technology offers.

Beyond the technical achievement, Monsterhouse is an excellent surprise for its family-oriented audience. Unlike Dreamworks and their Shrek-ish, below-the-belt, cynically adult-oriented features, this movie aims at both the kids and grown-ups in a way that tends to unite them around its subject, rather than addressing the two categories separately and alternatively.

To kids, this will be their first experience of an actual horror flick: the house IS seriously haunted and this is definitly no Casper-like curse. Lives are at stake here and the line between good and evil is not so strictly defined.

Some aspects of the plot have a very macabre touch, still a bittersweet feeling comes in balance towards the end.

A real implication is required from the kids, especially because a few thrills awaits them once the house has awaken.

On the parents’ side, besides the fact that for those like me who grew up with the Amblin productions of the eighties (The Goonies, The Gremlins and co), you are in for a great back-to-the-future nostalgic trip. Not only because the action takes place in the 80’s (various hints lead to believe it)but because the whole atmosphere, the characters, the humour will either make you wish you could still be 5 to 10 years old to fully dive into this nightmarish story, or simply will make you forget you’ve grown older and make you actually feel like you’re a kid again.

So thank you Mr Zemeckis and Mr Spielberg for producing this little gem, which, though it draws its inspiration from a classic tradition of haunted mansion archetypes, never fails to find its own identity and energy.

In a nutshell: great style and screenplay, technically impressive and very concerned about offering a satisfying show to the audience.

The beauty of Bardot is horribly marred by the poor picture quality of this film. The color is so screwed that the film appears to be in yellow.
No special features are offered on this DVD. It contains english dubbing which I think is fine because I prefer to watch dubbed foreign films anyway.
Since this is the only version of the film on DVD, I settled for what I could get.

This film amazed me. I was sad to see that the transfer of this DVD is virtually washed out of color, but then again, there has never been any problem with black & white film has there? There is some very solid direction from Vadim, plus great acting from Bardot and Robert Hossein. The story takes place in the great European period of the 1960’s where tragic love stories reign better than they ever have. Give me this over any American romantic comedy anyday (And technically this is a true romantic comedy in light of the story structure and the ending in particular; it’s just the superior European take on the genre). If you love this time period as conveyed through film, and like Bardot, this is a definite addition to add to your library!

This is it! The Quinticential DVD set for your collection! This contains some of the VERY BEST family films EVER MADE! You MUST OWN THIS DVD. It’s GREAT that Rankin/Bass are getting credit for their work for a change. The films include:

1.) Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – Who doesn’t knoww this film? (Actually there are quite a few people who I have met who have NEVER seen this! ) I am shocked when I find people who have NEVER know the story about the Reindeer with the red nose, the Dentist Elf, the carzy prospector who looks for Silver and Gold, but ends up with a Peppermint Mine (It is in the NEW Director’s Cut Edition), the Abominable “Bumble” Snow Monster of the North, the Island of Misfit Toys, the Skinny Santa Claus, it’s all here! This is the stuff that dreams are made of! This story, along with EVERY other GREAT Christmas film (excluding the Grinch) was written by one GREAT man, Mr. Romeo Muller. He also wrote the Puff the Magic Dragon series and several other films as well. You can not go wrong with this man’s GREAT work! The man was a genius who REALLY understood children! If you have earlier editions of this movie buy this Golden Books edition, because it has over 5 minutes of footage not seen since 1964, when it originally aired. (There is even stuff in this tape that was NOT shown on CBS in the publisised restored edition that has aired for the last 2 years.) If you have seen this movie, buy this version, if you have never seen this movie, I suggest that you buy it as well! I grew up on this story as a child! I watched it all year round and you and your children will too, with no doubt.

2.) The Little Drummer Boy – This is a FINE example of what Christmas is ALL ABOUT and not being too preachy. This is the story about Aaron, the Little Drummer Boy, who hates all people because his family was murdered by a group of Desert Thieves. Aaron is kidnapped by Ben Harmed, the greedy and crooked, self proclaimed “King of the Desert Showmen”. (played superbly by Hosse’ Ferrer) and his bubling assistant, Ollie. The story is told by Greer Garason, with a great air of dignanty. I cry every time I watch this story and there is good reason why (not tears of sadness, but tears of joy over the words of the African King about the Christ Child, because he is SO right!) This story was created by the GREAT Romeo Muller, who is the FINEST children’s writer who EVER lived! You can’t go wrong with a story writen by Romeo Muller. This one, in fact was his most favorite story that he ever wrote for Rankin/Bass Productions (his most favorite he EVER wrote was NOEL, which is also on video.) But I would HIGHLY recomend this film to anyone and everyone. It’s VERY enjoyable and you and your family will love it.

3.) Fosty the Snowman – This 1969 Masterpiece was written by the GREAT Romeo Muller, the GREATEST writer who ever lived, the man REALLY understood children. This film has a lot for both parents and children to enjoy. It has Jackie Vernon, giving warmth and kindness to Frosty the Snowman, Jimmy Durante as the EXCELLENT narrator, and Billy Dewolf as the SILLY Professor Hinkle (one of my all time favorite characters of Christmas Mythology.) This film also includes my personal favorite recording of ANY Christmas Song, the Jimmy Durante rendition of the title song. (I must recomend that you purchase the spliced version on CD.) You just can’t go wrong with this film. A great one for children just seeing it for the first time, or for parents who grew up with it themselves. You must also buy the sequel, “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland” and the semi sequel “Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July”, both buy Romeo Muller. PLEASE AVOID THE PIECE OF GARBAGE CLAIMING TO BE A SEQUEL ENTITLED “FROSTY RETURNS”, ALSO ISSUED BY GOLDEN BOOKS and it unfortunately on this DVD. IT IS A POOR PLOTLESS ATTEMPT AT A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL INDEED AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FROSTY THAT WE KNOW AND LOVE.

4.) Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town – Even though this one isn’t as popular as Frosty, Rudolph, and the Grinch, it’s just as magical. I did not know it even exsisted until I was 9 years old, and I LOVED IT! I was introduced to this one fairly late in my childhood, but it still holds a special place in my heart right next to Frosty and Rudolph. This is the one with the evil Burgermeister Meisterburger, who “HATES TOYS!”. I love this character MORE THAN the Grinch! This one also includes the Winter Warlock and Special Delivery Klugger, as well as a not so cocky (for a change) Mickey Rooney as Kris Kringle. This film is a true Holiday classic that keeps Christ in Christmas. There are MANY religious undertones in this film (just look at the Winter Warlock Character and watch his development from bad to good.) This is yet another materpiece by Romeo Muller, the GREATEST author who EVER lived! The man REALLY understood children. Some people say that this film is a bit dated, but I would have to disagree. I was born in 1980, and missed the 70’s and it never seemed like it was out of place to me (It was 1989 when I first saw it.) It will fit right in with all of the other Holiday films your children watch. No Holiday video collection is complete without this Gem. The songs are GREAT, the plot is EXCELLENT, and the characters are OUTSTANDING! You can’t go wrong with this one! Your children will enjoy it and you will too, garenteed!

If you love your children then YOU MUST BUY THIS DVD SET!

Wow! Where to start? What a wonderful set! Well lets start with:

Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town, an exciting look at how Santa began. Good to put on for young children to help answer those burning Santa questions. At some points, questions are actually asked by children about Santa, which are answered by the narrator Fred Astaire. I really like the character of BurgerMeister MeisterBurger who is one of the evil characters Santa must get past to be able to deliver his presents. The score is wonderful too, my fave being “Put one Foot in front of the Other”.

The Little Drummer Boy, which is found on the same disc as Santa Claus is comin to Town is right up there with the tissue factor as another R/B special Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey. This story is about a little boy named Aaron who has had a huge tragedy in his life, bringing him to hate humans. His only friends, therefore, being a camel, donkey and lamb who dance to the beat of his drum. The strange foursome end up being a part of the very first Christmas on that very holy night.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, is probably most R/B fans favourite. The Story based on the song of the same name, follows Rudolph as he battles to gain respect, due to his bright red nose. He is joined by Hermey, one of Santas elves who wants to be a dentist, not an elf, and together decide to be “a couple of misfits”. It is narrated by Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman and probably has the best set of songs as a whole out of all the other R/B specials. Plus with so many other great characters, Yukon Cornelious, Abominable, Clarice, Donner and Mrs Donner and of course Santa and Mrs Claus, you can’t go wrong.

Frosty the Snowman, although animated and not claymation, is still one of my faves every year. Also based on the song of the same name it follows Frosty’s adventures after his birth “Happy Birthday” by a group of school children. In particular, Karen, who gets quite good friends with Frosty and tries to help him from melting. My only complaint, which I think is the same as many, is that it isn’t joined by Frosty’s Winter Wonderland, the proper sequel. Instead it is joined by Frosty Returns. Now, this isn’t a bad effort, but when you are a big fan of R/B and you watch this, it is very dissapointing. The animation is totally different to that of R/B, the characters are all different except for Frosty and when you know there is a great sequel out there, this just doesn’t cut it. I probably will watch it very rarely.

I am from Australia, and for some reason, our tv stations stopped playing all these specials that I grew up on. I was really upset, even though now I am in my twenties. Fortunately I ended up finding these through internet search, which of course led me to Amazon. I am so happy that I have these(and others) and enjoy them so much. If you have never tried Rankin/Bass before, please do!

My kids (2 & 5) both love it! I only wish there was more Bing and Bong out there for the purchase because its hard to find this show on TV. And as a graduate of CLUB KID UNIVERSITY myself, I love the funky tribal back beats. Just bought one for my friend who’s having a baby!

This show is ADORABLE. The characters are so cute that you just want to squeeze them. (At least that’s what my 4 yr old says). Bing and Bong go on all sorts of adventures, traveling to different planets where they explore and learn all sorts of good things, like numbers, shapes, sounds, colors, etc. The program is really entertaining, funny, and did I mention cute!? Definitely pick it up if you’ve got a preschooler in your life!

This nature documentary is a 90-minute mini-version of the much longer Planet Earth produced by the BBC. The latter production took five years to make, had a $25 million budget, and employed the latest in photographic technology. The super slow motion and time lapse techniques are especially impressive. Watching the twelve-month transformation of a forest in 30 seconds is spectacular. Earth focuses on three animal “families”–a polar bear and two cubs, a herd of elephants, and then a mother and baby humpback whale that make a 4,000 mile migration. In between these three stories the film intersperses takes from the longer documentary. My only complaint is that this production oversells the product with music that at times is both melodramatic and cutesy, and a corny narration that is clearly intended for young children (”Time for mom and dad to fix breakfast for junior!”). If there is any nature photography that does not need hype, this big screen version is it. Still, like its longer predecessor, Earth makes for fantastic family viewing.

If you’ve seen Planet Earth already, there is no reason at all to watch this. All this movie is is bits and pieces of Planet Earth. It just makes no sense.

I love this series, but as you review them (as many times as I probably have) you start to see a lot of holes in them. However, I’m not sorry I purchased any of the sets.

I like scary stories – real or not – and this series delivers.

Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Fans of Highlander will not be disappointed in this DVD. Here we have the two MacLeods, Duncan and Connor together, sharing so many aspects of their long lives with us. We watch, in superbly done flashbacks, their early years together, the humor, intense and passionate love, loyalty, passion, ethical conundrums, betrayal and tragedy. There is something for everyone – even humour, amidst the heart-breaking angst. And the music is to die for. It is particularly pleasing to see another incredible MacLeod woman – Connor’s Mother.

I found myself laughing and crying at various times throughout the movie. There is no doubt that fans who have a deep knowledge of the Series will particularly enjoy this DVD. But even new viewers will not be disappointed.

This DVD will incorporate a number of scenes from the Workprint and this will flesh out the too short movie release. It is a must for those who have not been able to find another TV show or movie with the high production values, fascinating story concept, rounded characters, history, outstanding musical accompaniment, set design. clothes quality, sword and martial arts skill, tragedy, humor, farce, ethics, full-blooded eroticism, strong female and male characters – in short, Highlander: EndGamecontinues to deliver.

As an actor, Adrian Paul has always had a way of bringing out the best in those around him. This certainly seems to be the case here, with Christophe Lambert turning in an outstanding performance as Connor – a man wracked with guilt and pain. Some of the most intense moments in the film are scenes where Connor says little, but his expression says it all and we feel our hearts breaking. His love for his bonny Heather is one of the great love stories and spans centuries. His recounting of how he once saw his Heather, cutting her hair in order to preserve a part of her for Connor that would never age was heart-wrenching. It is the film’s ability to keep posing these types of questions that delights. What *would* it be like to have a gorgeous lover who never ages – who cannot die…and who loves you so intensely that he promises to watching you age and wither, to care for you and to love you until his own dying day?

Lisa Babuscia is another real find for me. Her story was so tragic – so wasteful. Indeed, there is so much that speaks of wasted opportunities, immature judgments that come back to haunt and to ultimately kill.

Adrian himself turns in an outstanding performance as the ravaged and distraught Duncan. His continuing ability to work through the pain and the constant tragedy that surrounds him continues to inspire. Duncan’s message is one of eternal hope for something better, that evil must be fought no matter the cost, and it is one that he never deviates from. There are a number of scenes in particular where his performance is excellent – in particular, the rooftop scene with Connor, and a harrowing scene with Kate.

Whilst there was a little too much in the way of gore for my taste, I always enjoy a good sword fight and outstanding martial arts – and yes, the martial arts sequence with Donnie Yen, I am reliably informed,is shown at actual speed! It is no technical trick – it really was that fast. Again, full credit to Adrian and Donnie – and F. Braun Ashe who admits that he knew enough to simply get out of the way of these two and let them choreograph and do what they do so well.

‘There can be only one!” New viewers and long time fans will not be disappointed with this welcome addition to the Highlander universe. We have followed the journey of Duncan MacLeod for over six years – this film offers further insights into how painful that continuing journey is, for Duncan himself and those who love him and those who aspire to capture his spirit and his soul.

“Highlander – The Final Dimension” (aka Highlander 3) for all practical purposes should have been the direct follow-up to the original 1986 movie. It practically followed right after the first left off with a relentless New York cop in pursuit of “Russel Nash” (aka Connor MacLeod). In Highlander 3, Connor is also being pursued by a group of ancient [immortal] Mongal warriors led by Mario van Peebles. His band of merry warriors is taken down one by one by our hero Connor, well except one in which Mario dispatches himself for failure. But of course, the van Peebles character kidnaps Connor’s son to use as bait for the final showdown.

For 1994, the special effects in this movie were pretty good. However, there’s never really been a good DVD release of this movie. The OOP version was non-anamorphic with just 2.0 sound. There’s another version coming out on 4.5.05 with no specs listed, let’s hope that this is a brand new disc.

Now this leads me to the eye-rolling, hilarious review by ty7777 below. When ty7777 gives the disc a 1-star review because it’s in widescreen instead of FOOLSCREEN. But then I guess some people are just too ignorant and ill-informed to enjoy film as an art form.

This is a GREAT collection for those of us who are into religious films! Warner Brothers has announced the individual release, or a “Films of Faith” Collection in time for Easter 2006! This will include Audrey Hepburn’s “The Nun’s Story” and the inspiring “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima”…..but most exciting is the inclusion of the Anthony Quinn film of Morris West’s book, “The Shoes of the Fisherman” (about the election of a Russian Pope nearly a decade before John Paul II was elected from Poland!). In particular, “Shoes of the Fisherman” is known for its great attention and accuracy of detail in showing the conclave pagentry and process (although in reality this election process has since been updated due to the larger number of Cardinals now eligible to vote in a conclave). For those of us into “churchy” movies, this film has long been considered the Holy Grail of church-themed movies and it is very exciting that it is coming to DVD!

I was very happy to read that these movies were going to be released on DVD. As the saying goes, “they don’t make movies like this anymore”. These are some of the best religious movies ever made. They capture the struggles and pains of the human person in a challenging world. At the same time, they also express a great sense of hope to a fragile world. Since these movies were made so long ago, I hope our younger viewers will take the opportunity to see these great movies. They will always be truly inspiring.
