I impartial wrote a review for “The Two Mrs. Carrolls” mentioning “Curse” as a deleted title. Apparently it’s not; cos’ here it is. Why did I talk about “Mrs. Carrolls”? . -Well, that one also features the suitable Ann Carter. She’s perfect here; they could not have found a better actress. She’s in nearly every scene (not surprisingly since the film’s really about her), and completely steals the note from all the adults. Jane Randolph and Kent Smith (as the parents) reprise their roles from “Cat People”, but they’re merely shadows here. Simone Simon returns from the grave, to play with the lonely and isolated diminutive Amy. Lewton regular Elizabeth Russell was also in “Cat People”, but in a different fraction apparently. -Although that character was never really explained, so I remark somehow it could actually be the same character; out to “curse” again. (I know it’s probably not the case, but believe about it; it’s not impossible) . Whatever, this is one eerie and spooky movie. It’s filled with memorable, and atmospheric scenes. I worship it. Actually, it’s not honest a Awe film, but a touching and bright myth about a misunderstood child. And if it weren’t for that misplaced title, I’m obvious more people would gawk it. I highly recommend it anyway, you won’t be disappointed if you’re into the genuine feeble style of movie-making. Actually, I reflect TV should present it every year around christmas; please examine it and produce it a tradition wherever you can. -It’s not honest a astounding movie which will suit the season, there’s a message in it as well: listen to children with invisible playmates. Oh, I almost forgot; it also features the colorful Sir Lancelot. Glance it! .

Producer Val Lewton was forced to work with a limited budget during his time with RKO, but faced with financial contraints and lack of star power, he curved up with director Jacques Tourneur to obtain several dread films that many decades later are calm considered the finest ever made in the genre. “Cat People” is one of those films. While “Curse of the Cat People” often gets lumped with these fright classics, this Robert Wise directed film is more fantasy and mood than terror.

Both Kent Smith and Jane Randolph return in this quasi-sequel but it is young Ann Carter as their daughter Amy who is at the center of this film. The memory of the tormented Irena hovers over every frame. Once again Simone Simon becomes a presence in the life of Reed when his young daughter Amy begins to retreat into a world of her maintain. But it may be more than mere fantasy despite her loving father’s refusal to absorb.

There is almost a magical and somewhat haunting feel to this exploration of a child’s mind and what is precise and what is not. Unbiased as in “Cat People” where you ached to beget in the curse surrounding Irena (Simone Simon), Lewton and Wise do a bridge between Amy’s imagination and Irena’s presence we want desperately to acquire in. This is a very special film with a mood unlike the dismay films Lewton made. It stands on its beget, however, and should not be dismissed.

A far different creature entirely is the modern “Cat People.” Lewton and Tourneur let the imagination of the viewer get up the dismay, as everything is in the unseen. It was a blueprint they would utilize in several films and it always worked. Lewton and Tourneur novel that what we could imagine in our minds through cinematic suggestion was far worse than anything they could graphically display on conceal.

Simone Simon, little and pleasing, is perfect as the sweet Yugoslavian girl Irena Dubrovna, living in Fresh York City and trying to fit in. Even after she meets and marries Oliver (Kent Smith) there is a shadow on her life which stands eerily between the happiness she desires and the curse she feels inside her.

A scene in a restaurant when “one of her gain kind” recognizes the panther inside her is particularly unsettleing. Tom Conway is the doctor who tries to assist and Jane Randolph has a nice piece as Oliver’s friend Alice. As Irene wrestles with her awe, Oliver begins to confide in Alice and it becomes sure to Irena that there could be more. Irena’s jealously may awaken the panther inside her and effect all their lives in wretchedness.

A film that is plump of atmosphere and dripping with doom, there are some genuinely scary moments here. A scene behind at night as Irena walks alone down the street, and a evil scene by a pool are both legendary. Simone Simon brought a fragile, and yes, cat like grace to the role. Tourneur lets the audience sense her anxiety and feel sorry for her tortured soul.

Both these films, while quite different in tone and with a distinctly different atmosphere, are worthy examples of how gargantuan cinema can become when it is stripped bare of pretension and forced to spend record and filmmaking technique to pick its audience.

Watch “Curse of the Cat People” and devour it for the film it is rather than what it is not. As for the unique “Cat People,” gawk this one leisurely at night, but by all means, do not perceive it alone!

In this profoundly imaginitive series, Samurai Jack is a well-behaved warrior fighting for the cause of justice, lawful, and beneficial. He generously helps many oppressed people along the map, teaching them how to fight Aku’s horrible armies and gangs of henchmen. In the course of his quest, Jack frequently endures harsh ordeals of battle, deprivation, climate, and basic survival. He bravely stands alone against considerable adversaries who sometimes inflict coarse and brutal abuse upon him, forcing him to retreat and re-assess his strategy.

… But then Jack counter-attacks with original tactics and even greater decide, and prevails against his opponents. He NEVER gives up!

Being a father, I have largely searched in vain for contemporary cartoons that have anything of substance, trustworthy for my child.

Children are exposed to quite a bit of nondescript meaningless trash, in keen accomplish. Samurai Jack is a most welcome exception!

I salvage this to be a triumphant, lustrous, and truly superb presentation of the dauntless ideal for young viewers.

Samurai Jack!!! The Best Of The Best!!!

I have always loved cartoons, but in the past few years television animation has degenerated for the most fraction into inane nonsense with no proper message or clever writing. There are exceptions however, and chief among them is the masterpiece of animation that is Samurai Jack.

This Emmy Award winning series is in my humble belief, nothing short of the greatest fascinating series ever! Why Cartoon Network ceased its production of the explain will always remain a mystery to me. I peaceful deem of it as a travesty of monumental proportions.

Each episode in this shining series is well written, and amazingly executed. This is not your basic slapped together Saturday morning cartoon. Samurai Jack is high art. There was never anything like it before on television, and there has not been anything to match it since.

Each episode has a theme and a message that can be translated into values and ethics that really matter in life; courage, honor, loyalty, generosity, tenacity, integrity, intelligence, humor, respect, beauty, magnanimity, and education are writ big upon the sandaled path of Samurai Jack’s quest.

All of this is rendered in vividly wonderful and utterly original animation that is cinematic and fable in nature, not to mention every frame could be made into a radiant art print. Samurai Jack with his magical, ancestral katana in gripped firmly in hand, though alone in a world unique and unknown to him, he stands resolute and triumphant against impossible odds, striving ever forward to defeat gross, uphold justice and mercy, and return to defend his homeland from misery and destruction, thus saving the world from a future of bondage and scare.

If you want a graceful share of art and literature grasp this series.

‘Nough said.

When actor John Garfield wanted to earn a boxing movie, Abraham Polonsky came up with this myth on the spur of the moment. “Body and Soul” found astronomical well-liked success and went on to garner Garfield an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, Polonsky a nod for Best Screenplay, and gather the 1948 Oscar for Best Editing. In addition to being one of John Garfield’s most current roles, “Body and Soul” is remembered for its realistic depiction of boxing matches, filmed by cinematographer James Wong Howe, who had been a professional boxer in his youth. It probably didn’t pain that John Garfield had been an amateur boxer when he was young also, although he had to be doubled in some of the fight scenes due to his heart condition.

“Body and Soul” begins the night before World Boxing Champion Charley Davis (John Garfield) is to defend his title. He’s supposed to throw the fight and produce a bundle for the promoter, Mr. Roberts (Lloyd Goff) . He’s uneasy, can’t sleep, and wanders around town seeking comfort -or something- in friends and family with exiguous luck. Moral before the fight, Charley drifts into sleep, murmuring “It’s all gone down the drain” as he begins to dream. Most of the film is in flashback. Charley recalls his humble beginnings as an amateur champion and the pride of his archaic neighborhood. His mother (Anne Revere) disapproved of boxing, but Charley wanted to rupture free of the Lower East Side’s violence and poverty. He wanted success more than anything in the world. With the encourage of his old-fashioned friend Shorty (Joseph Pevney) and his manager Quinn (William Conrad), Charley became a pro with a promising future. But he sacrificed control of his career in a horrible partnership with Roberts in order to secure a championship fight.

John Garfield is too conventional for this role, but it’s serene perfect for him. He excelled at playing barely working class tough guys who are foolish and self-destructive, but somehow lovable and sympathetic. Perhaps because Charley came from a life of deprivation, he thinks of nothing but money -making it and spending it- to the detriment of his relationships and his integrity. “Body and Soul” is elevated from conspicuous morality story to classic film by virtue of its supporting cast. William Conrad is terrific as the gruff, two-faced, but somehow sympathetic Quinn, even though he has few lines. And Charley’s gold digging mistress, Alice, an even less prominent character, is played memorably by Hazel Brooks. Charley’s fiancée and beloved Peg, an art student and aspiring painter played by Lilli Palmer, is an weird character. She’s lustrous, order, and temperate -in incompatibility to Charley. But her European accent and refined demeanor obtain her seem as out of region in the film as in the Lower East Side. Somehow, this works in the film’s favor by putting Peg on a true pedestal. “Body and Soul” is an titillating film, a must for John Garfield fans, vital for being one of the first boxing films and one of the last “social conscience” films of the classic era. In fact, the film is plainly about the 1930s even though it takes position in the 1940s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Body and Soul! Click Here

The DVD (Republic/Artisan 1999 release) : This is a obedient print of the film, without serious flaws, but it’s not actually restored. I counted 2 momentary audio problems. The single bonus feature is “Production Notes”, a 7-page essay that discusses the film’s inspiration, how Abraham Polonsky came to write it, some anecdotes about filming, and an alternate, more cynical, ending. No subtitles.

Charlie Davis grew up terrible but proud, a brash young kid with fists of stone and an appetite for the better life. John Garfield plays Davis in BODY AND SOUL, one of the starkest morality plays Hollywood has ever produced.

BODY AND SOUL is deeply cynical and enjoys a pessimism untainted by many promises of redemption. People don’t drop in fancy in the world Charlie is so involved to join – they negotiate exasperated contracts with each other. William Conrad plays Charlie’s manager who at one point loses his girl to Charlie. In a happier moment Conrad once told her, “Remember, first mink and then ermine.” It’s a constant theme in the movie – everything is for sale, and the more of you you shell out the better the reward. The girl’s bitter descend from Charlie’s grace takes her relieve to Conrad and his rabbit fur territory. Conrad welcomes her benefit with a snarled “Looks like you’re assist in my league.” “I don’t know,” she says, “you’re getting kind of dilapidated.” Conrad ends this cramped woo-pitching session with the trustworthy observation that “You could spend a modern paint job yourself.” This is a Social Darwinism without great sociability and one where all the predators are keeping net.

About the only light radiated in Charlie’s life approach from girlfriend Peg and his mother, both long-suffering forgivers. But the lure of the Damned overshadows that of the Graced. The feeble dress better and have bigger toys. Besides, we imagine Charlie tells himself, I can always step away when I’ve had my acquire….

BODY AND SOUL was custom made for its star and plays to all his strengths. John Garfield shines in this career defining role that fits him like a glove – a pugnacious and cocky kid from the unsuitable side of town chases the brass ring and stumbles when he runs into something tougher than his fists and immune to his wise cracks. Garfield’s other gigantic acting asset was his ability to glance the unlit corners of his soul and select the audience along for a unfortunate tour. Garfield is corruptible, but incapable of being evil. His mortal attempt to reclaim his soul is announced with one of the greatest tough guy lines in movie history: “What are you gonna do, end me? We all gotta die.”

An important movie.

ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE isn’t golden. Expectations were high after Cate Blanchett’s first foray in 1998 as Elizabeth I, but somehow this follow-up film, with the same director (Shekhar Kapur) and writer (Michael Hirst with assistance from William Nicholson), does not advance those heights. Visually gorgeous, with an endless array of knockout costumes for Blanchett, special effects and scenery as majestic as any that have been photographed by splendid cinematographer Remie Adefarasin and a musical glean by Craig Armstrong and AR Rahman – all of these stunning attributes cannot cloak the ragged script and the general lack of character development that hampers the usually exceptional core of actors.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Elizabeth: The Golden Age! Click Here

The section of Elizabeth’s history covered by the film is the battle with Spain, England being the only country not participating in the Holy War in Europe under the direction of King Philip II of Spain (Jordi Mollà), complete with the surprise decimation of the approaching Spanish Armada due to the heroism and commitment of Elizabeth with her people. The surrounding events include Elizabeth’s dalliance with Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen) and the traumatic (for Elizabeth) beheading of Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton), under the advisement of Elizabeth’s trusted Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Hurry) .

Blanchett is a consummate actress and manages to inhabit the persona of Elizabeth as grand with her glances and body language and silences as with the meager material from the script. She IS a Queen reborn. The remainder of the cast is adequate though shallow, and while each has very shrimp to say they beget an atmosphere of Elizabethan England. This is a DVD that could well be watched without the soundtrack and collected be challenging for the visual splendors. It could have been so considerable more. Grady Harp, February 08

When we last left Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett), she was young and inexperienced, struggling to reach to terms with ruling a country. We now rejoin her in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” which begins well into her reign; beginning in the year 1585, the film chronicles the growing tension between England and Spain and culminates with a fierce sea battle. It also examines the relationship between Elizabeth and Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), an adventurous seafarer. What we’re presented with is less of an precise yarn and more of a dramatic worship myth, which basically means that it isn’t even end to being historically honest. But I guess that isn’t a awful thing, considering the film’s more creative aspects–”The Golden Age” is a triumph of plot and costume build, and the performances are top notch.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Elizabeth: The Golden Age! Click Here

If only the yarn were at the same level. It would be too worthy to say that the situation isn’t interesting; rather, it isn’t titillating enough. Grand of the material plays like a hurry of the mill romance, regardless of the time period. I unbiased know that so remarkable more defined Queen Elizabeth I, and I wish the filmmakers had given her character a shrimp more depth. Not that she’s completely shallow–if anything, quite a lot weighs heavy on her mind, not the least of which is her conniving cousin, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton) . Most of their rivalry stems from different religious faiths: Elizabeth is Protestant while Mary is Catholic. Hoping to grasp control of the throne, Mary conspires to have Elizabeth assassinated. Intercepting on Elizabeth’s behalf is Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Hasten), the Queen’s most trusted advisor.

On Mary’s side is Philip II (Jordi Mollà), King of Spain, who believes that Elizabeth has turned England into a godless country. He intends to conquer the Queen by sending a much armada, and the Spanish Inquisition along with it. Elizabeth understands that England’s resources are depleted, as is its money; a counterattack will be remarkable harder to belief and conclude. Despite being incredibly strong-willed, something is holding her attend, something that’s diminishing her confidence. She seems to rely on Raleigh to soothe her, despite not incandescent who he is or where he came from. All we do know is that he’s arrived home from the Novel World, where he named a colony in honor of the Virgin Queen (Virginia) . We’ve seen many films that originate the Mysterious Stranger keen or downright sexy–indeed, Raleigh is dashing, flirtatious, and plucky. Impartial discover the procedure he presents potatoes and tobacco to Elizabeth.

Hoping to find favor with the Queen, Raleigh gets end to her celebrated Lady in Waiting, Bess (Abbie Cornish), and it becomes sure that his affections are divided between these two women. This set map could have been considerable more animated had it not been so cliché; I’ve seen romantic conflict before, and it’s usually reserved for escapist films. But “The Golden Age” is historical in context. I wanted more focus on the impending Spanish attack, especially since it was so intertwined with Elizabeth’s assassination status. The final major sequence does feature some battle, but not enough to be satisfying. It’s as if the film fizzles out after spending so powerful time building itself up. It’s not entirely a letdown, but it is a disappointment. This is especially honest of Elizabeth’s pre-battle speech: clad in armor, she rides a horse in front of her army while spewing encouraging sayings. I half expected her to say that the enemy may rob their lives, but they’d never acquire their freedom.

Still, I have to give credit where credit is due. I greatly enjoyed Blanchett’s performance; she gave Elizabeth a obvious yet fragile quality that was compelling. I distinctly remember an emotional outburst aimed at the Spanish ambassador: “I too can affirm the wind, sir!” she screams. “I have a hurricane in me that will strip Spain bare if you dare to try me!” This moment was raw and overwhelming, which was appropriate given her emotional area. I also remember a scene in an astrologist’s lair showing Elizabeth’s desperation. She clearly couldn’t stand not bright how everything would turn out. It was prophesized that two kingdoms would battle and only one would fall–the Queen would like nothing more than to hear that England will be victorious. Unfortunately, that cannot be guaranteed.

Yes, there is a lot to recommend about “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” and thank goodness that the righteous outweighs the abominable. This is not a perfect film, but it can mild come by an audience from point A to point B. And it certainly is incredible to see at; every shot is so richly detailed that you can’t aid but esteem the work that went into it. The costumes are luminous, sparkling, and intricate. The sets are lavish and audacious, with practically every space dripping with bright tapestries. The armada attack features a number of convincing special effects. Basically, everything felt actual in terms of the film’s spy. The film’s chronicle, on the other hand, wasn’t all that it could have been. There’s a wealth of material on Queen Elizabeth I, and I can’t back but feel that most of it was disregarded to create room for romantic elements. Romance works, but only to a point.

Along with “Spoiled Play” this is one of Goldie Hawn’s finest hours, playing a rich, pampered widow who is duped into joining the army. An hysterical comedy who’s format has been returned to time and again, but never quite to this enact. Eileen Brennan is equally improbable as the tough army officer you fancy to loathe. I’ve been awaiting the release of this film on DVD for some time (along with Heinous Play which hasn’t yet been released), and it’s here that I felt disappointed. For one, the only released version of this is in Standard Pan & Scan. I know some of you out there peaceful cling to this used format, but for the rest of us, this is unacceptable. At the very least, it should have been dual sided, with Widescreen on one side and Standard on the other. Secondly, they’ve done nothing with soundtrack other than point to in Dolby Stereo 2.0. I realize that with some older titles, they don’t bother to remaster the soundtrack in 5.0 (let alone DTS – the Ultimate sound format for your buck!), but I collected judge it’s very lame that they do this. Anyway, there is a trailer, at least, but don’t inquire any deleted scenes, bloopers, or any other savor features. The film can also be heard in French, but Spanish would also have been nice (there are at least Spanish subtitles) . They’ve priced this relatively extreme (I guess because they knew what a lame job they did with it), but I’d have preferred a bit more of a higher label if it meant dinky more peril on their piece for this truly classic comedy. Let’s hope that “Substandard Play” offers a lot more when it’s finally released.

Judy is in an extremely vulnerable space and when she calls into a radio prove to understand why her life is in turmoil, an army recruter asks to meet her. When she arrives, she is obviously confused and wants to flee from her problems.

An assignment in Europe, getting into peak physical shape and living in her hold condo sounds unprejudiced too tempting. The disturbingly insensitive Captain Doreen Lewis is a amusing treat all by herself, yet even with a whip in hand, not even she can compete with the pouting princess. Doreen wants to toss Judy lawful relieve into the arms of her parents. However, when Judy’s father tells her she is not colorful enough to compose her hold decisions, something changes. Some of the mountainous silly moments are when Goldie is cleaning the bathroom with her electric toothbrush. I have stayed at an army ghastly in Germany and trust me, they could have old-fashioned a bit of toothbrush cleaning. My thoughts were that in the army, everything was spotless. Not! So, this movie was even funnier since I could totally recount to some of the experiences Judy had to go through. Another reason to respect our men and women in the military!

While this is mostly a comedy, there is some romance, with a sadistic twist. You know there is going to be anguish when Judy asks: “Am I making sense? ” And her French Fianc says: “No, and that `s what I treasure about you.” You begin to come by the feeling that Judy is the only one who really knows what she wants and that no one else is listening.

Judy starts off running from her problems and ends up running from her problems. There are no accurate solutions presented, except to accelerate. And maybe sometimes if you contemplate about it, running is impartial a obliging understanding.

Comic Entertainment at its finest!

Ancient Greek plays with all their dramatic devices and often an emphasis on static speeches by the actors and the chorus often do not translate well to the camouflage. Euripides’ “The Trojan Women,” however, is an exception to the rule. What makes this production work is the sparkling acting by most of the performers as well as the glowing language, though in translation, of Euripides.

The site is simple and straight forward. Queen Hecuba (Katharine Hepburn), her now crazed daughter Cassandra (Genevieve Bujold), her daughter-in-law Andromache (Vanessa Redgrave) and a host of other Trojan women are now at the mercy of the Greek victors. The play builds as one catastrophe after another befalls these women. Cassanda will be the wife of Agammemnon, Andromache will go with the son of Achilles, and Hecuba will become the slave of Odysseus– or as Hecuba so aptly puts it, “Trouble heaped upon pain.”

The Greek chorus– or in this instance I converse we must call them the “Trojan Chorus” works well. Irene Papas plays a different sort of Helen than we sight through other writers’ eyes. Here she is unbowed, even as she awaits her fate from the hands of her wronged husband Menelaus. In a quite incredible scene, after Helen has made her pitch to him to spare her life, Hecuba delivers the sizable lines: “Ruin her, Menelaus.” Ms. Hepburn has a lot of such passages. I remember from having seen the movie when it was released in 1971 her lines: “Kindness unwanted is unkindness.”

The theme is distinct. Wars always injure the women and children most– Andromache’s son almost steals the movie, by the way– and while the weaponry and locales may change, war in 2005 is not that mighty different than it ever was, a shaded, sobering opinion.

“The Trojan War” was written by the Greek tragic dramatist Euripides as a plea for peace after the Athenians had slaughtered the populace of the island of Melos for refusing to befriend Athens in the war against Sparta, and as preparations were being made for the ruinous expedition against Syracuse. Consequently there is a strong rhetorical dimension to the play, which prophesies that a Greek force would coast across the sea after violating victims and meet with peril. However, there the play also has a strong literary consideration in that the four Trojan Women all appear in the final chapter of the “Iliad,” mourning over the corpse of Hector, retrieved by his father Priam from the camp of the Acheans. Following the episodic structure of Greek tragedy, we commence with the lamentations of Hecuba (Katharine Hepburn), queen of the fallen city, then have the wild prophecies of her crazed daughter Cassandra (Geneviève Bujold), and then have to peep Astyanax, the son of Hector and Andromache (Vanessa Redgrave), be ripped away from her mother’s arms so he can be thrown from the walls of Troy. When the ravishing Helen (Irene Papas) is brought out, Hecuba tries to convince Menelaus (Patrick Magee) to ruin his unfaithful wife. The tragedy ends with the women of Troy being taken to the ships of their captives.

This 1971 film was directed by Michael Cacoyannis, who is best known for directing “Zorba the Greek,” but who also did an kindly version of another Euripides play “Electra” in 1962 with Irene Papas in the title role. Cacoyannis tries for something a bit more naturalistic than that previous anxiety, but the ruin result this time around creates an discouraged distance between the characters and the audience that puts these performances in a unique sort of limbo. This is rather surprising because we are talking some formidable talent with these four actresses (who narrate four different countries of origin) . I first saw this film in high school, when I had absolutely no conception of the forms and conventions of classical Greek tragedy, and I found I have less appreciation for the film today. Understand that I am a Katharine Hepburn fan of the first order and voice Greek tragedies at any and all opportunities, but I am impartial not inspired by this film. Hepburn’s performance is overly spicy, Bujold’s is mannered affectation, Redgrave’s is understated at the expense of the location, and only Papas manages to bring some fire to her role that rings factual.

“The Trojan Women” reflects the cynicism of Euripides at its most strident. In this play the Greeks do more than enslave the women of fallen Troy: they have already slain a young girl as a sacrifice to the ghost of Achilles and they capture a limited boy and ruin him. Even the herald of the Greeks, Talthybius (Brian Blessed), cannot stomach the policies of his people. The play also reminds us that Helen was a most unpopular figure amongst the broken-down Greeks, and there is no satisfaction in her saving her life. Your ability to bask in this play, whether we are talking about watching the film or simply reading the text, is going to be based on how mighty you know about Homer’s account poem “The Iliad” and the entire myth of the Trojan War. Final Note: Edith Hamilton, author of a classic book on mythology that I utilize in my Classical Greek and Roman Mythology course, did the English translation for the film.

This is one time that I have to acquire exception to the house reviewer. Yes, it’s an important allotment of American cinema. Yes, it’s one of Peckinpah’s best films. But the review overlooks so considerable.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ride the High Country! Click Here

This was the cinematic swan song for two more-than-noteworthy stars of quintessentially American movies. Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott both turn in radiant performances, as do the extras– notably Peckinpah regular (and perhaps the most under-appreciated American actor ever to grace the conceal) Warren Oates. And you don’t have to view lickety-split for him, folks. He’s a gargantuan allotment of the film.

In a plot, Waddle the High Country was deconstructionist before Unforgiven ever hit the vast screen– by thirty years or so. Like Eastwood’s hit, the film manages to notify reverence for and contempt of the mythology of the American West at the same time. All the stock players are here, but never presented as stereotypes. Bankers, prostitutes, prospectors, missionaries, young bucks, lawmen, hucksters and outlaws. Anyone familiar with westerns knows the drill. Only this time it’s different.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ride the High Country! Click Here

Though recognized as a genius, Peckinpah is objective as often derided as a misogynistic Hemingway-wannabe these days. What a shame. This film is no macho fantasy. Instead, it’s a gawk at the seemingly inevitable (and lamentable) decay of principles that results when high-minded people procure themselves in a set and a setting that doesn’t conform to their preconceptions of how things ought to be (Straw Dogs, anyone? ) — and what happens when they ‘return to normalcy’ in the wake of atrocity. When everything’s on the line, one might fair be faced with the sort of challenge to faith (in anything held dear) that we all horror confronting. Stand honest and lose it all, or sell out and salvage? Or is there an easy out? This would be a theme throughout the director’s work, but here it is ingeniously presented in an ostensibly straightforward horse opera that cleverly plays on viewer expectations. What appears to be another entry in a breezy, escapist genre ultimately reveals itself to be a meditation on unbiased how difficult it is to ever sprint the travails of life. And how remarkable it can cost to enact that same goal.

As great as the film points an accusing finger at the western, there are many ways in which the director expresses his enjoy sense of hope that such fairy-tale wishes could arrive suitable. Guess I’ll have to resolve for the Police Academy box station while I wait for this one to turn up on DVD…..

This is what they mean when they say, “they don’t effect them like that anymore.” With all the praise inexplicably heaped on a part of crap called “A History of Violence”, a ridiculous, mindless film, based on a barely literate cartoon strip, you often wonder exactly what has happened to American films – which primitive to be the envy of the world for their craftsmanship and acting. “Flow the High Country” was apparently considered a very pleasurable itsy-bitsy “B” movie in its first release – but time and care now reveals it to be an American classic. Two terrific actors, in their magnificent twilight, working with an upcoming director, team up for a beautifully crafted, gorgeously filmed and scored, Western about character and justice. TCM has been showing the widescreen version of this gem for a couple of years – and now here it is where it belongs – on DVD for every good film fan to glance. Forget Tarantino’s mindless violence. Forget the snappily cuts and lack of storytelling talent of practically every film director in the business honest now: this is how it is done, and the director of this film never did as well (he too lapsed into cheap “tiring, motion” violence and other inhuman traits as his fill film career lurched on) . Here we have a myth told with depth and clarity – and HUMANITY. Scott and McCrea are two mammoth stars who know something about manhood, decency, wit, grace, and strength. Where are these kinds of films now? Where are the male actors who can inhabit these roles with some degree of class, grace, and strength? Why can’t ANYONE do a simple, obvious, human Western, as it was once done, which often had so considerable to say about contemporary times (”High Noon,” as one example)? At least we have this and you can’t argue with it: a spare, blooming Western, with one of the astronomical climaxes in film history. A MUST!
