BLAH. Disappointing.

What is this uncommon movie about? Shopping malls, easily (and shabbily) constructed suburban building projects, computer dating, lonliness and the pursuit of attention, mass media, metal buildings, computers, evangelist preachers, the disappearance of culture into the principles of the ledger sheet and the skyscraper. These and other topics pervade “Accurate Stories’” disparate place lines and imagery. David Byrne took on the entire emerging power establishment of the unhurried 1980s in this film. Today the film views like a warning, like a bleak testament to the disappearance of a previous map of life. Most of us live in the culmination of what this film seemed to prophesize. “Good Stories” is cultural criticism embedded in campy film.

Byrne had played with the theme of mainstream alienation before. “Don’t Danger About the Government” (from “Talking Heads ‘77″), “The Huge Country” (from “More Songs About Buildings and Food”), and “The Road to Nowhere” (from “Tiny Creatures”) provide honest three examples. These songs attempt to elevate peoples’ perceptions about their immediate culture. So does “Accurate Stores”.

Not everyone will appreciate this movie. Sometimes the glide moves along like molasses. Some of it feels very dated. It has an intentionally stilted perspective as it plays with approved expectations and perceptions. Some of the humor is corny. In short, it’s an experimental movie. That said, it also contains moments of absolute brilliance, penetrates some then unknown depths of humor, and has the ability to commence eyes to the bizarre aspects of the culture of 1986 that we have all inherited. It also invites comparisons (in theme) to Luis Buñuel’s “The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie”. That and the cinematography of the sizable Texas landscape is beautiful.

One scene that really brings out the film’s themes is “The Parade of Specialness” in Virgil, Texas (with the Shriners in cars and the ‘lawnmower brigade’) . This scene is more about the disappearance of exiguous town culture and pride and less about the freakishness of minute town parades. As the painfully brief parade passes, the crowd stares at the tail extinguish of the festivities as it slowly fades away into an empty distance. Where are they going? Away, seemingly forever, to nowhere. And hasty.

Some of the other intellectual scenes include: the fashion point to with wildly ostentatious and meaningless fashions paraded past gaping mall goers; the dinner with the Culvers (”pass this to our guest”) ; the “Puzzlin’ Evidence” and “Esteem For Sale” montages; the film’s climax “The Immense Indicate”. Byrne’s intro “The History of Texas” is one of the biggest highlights. John Goodman, in one of his earliest roles, plays Louis with sincerity and sometimes over the top humor. And Spaulding Gray displays only absolute mastery when he appears on the mask. His almost surreal introduction to “The Titanic Exhibit” would stand up to infinite viewings.

Lastly, calling “Lawful Stories” a “Talking Heads Movie” must be one of the greatest misnomers of that band’s career. This was Byrne’s movie (the other 3 members only appear in very brief glimpses and in the re-edited nick of the “Wild Wild Life” video) . In 1986 the band stood on a pinnacle of popularity following 1985’s “Limited Creatures”. People with money in their eyes likely conception to capitalize on the band’s success (or perhaps that’s how the film received funding? ) . Unfortunately, the band also found itself breaking apart at the seams. In an exclaim of Rolling Stone at the time, the other band members (most notably Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz) openly attacked Byrne. They depicted this movie as Byrne’s attempt to set himself above the band. Weymouth even compared Byrne to a five year used. Nastiness ensued, and the film “Correct Stories” remains one of the pieces in the puzzle of the band’s demise. They released one more album in 1988, “Naked”. That was it, apart from a few very cursory “reunions”. The DVD re-release fair great removes the “Talking Heads” tie-in that created so powerful tension during the film’s novel release. This is well-behaved. “Honest Stories” stands up better as a “David Byrne” film than as a “Talking Heads” film.

Originally released as an IMAX film in the mid-80s, Chronos on DVD unfortunately can not match the power of the IMAX experience. But really; what TV can compete with a 5-story-high mask? I saw the film three times in IMAX and each time I saw something fresh and wonderful. I couldn’t wait to earn this film on DVD. Any shortcomings the Chronos DVD has are related to the size and clarity of the image as displayed on a television, not the film’s impart. The images of earthly constructions both natural and man-made are drop-dead-gorgeous, and the music — a nonstop electronic instrumental catch — is mesmerizing. At roughly 45 minutes in length, you’ll not want it to kill. The disc has a spare and clunky interface and no special features, but who cares? Chronos is a wonder that I acquire myself watching again and again.

For those who loved the Qatsi Trilogy and Baraka, this is a welcome addition to your collection. It’s completely time-elapse cinematography which features some compelling locations, particularly the interior of the Vatican and the Pyramids at Giza. It’s a puny shorter in length than the other films I mentioned above, and in my conception the music, with its eerie synthesized tones dates the film (circa 1984), but it’s worth the very affordable notice the disc is retailing for now. This special collector’s edition DVD also includes some absorbing interviews with the crew about their experiences during the making of the film, and the groundbreaking camera that was invented specifically for this project.

All in all, if you’re a fan of Baraka and the Qatsi Trilogy or unbiased time-elapse photography then you will certainly like this early contribution to it’s genre.

“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” is a deeply enchanting peer into the frustration, sadness and triumph of fancy in what some would classify as a dysfunctional family. As the mentally retarded Arnie, Leonardo DiCaprio turns in an incredibly realistic performance; his gestures, his often repetitive speech…everything about his acting seems so perfect for the role he plays. (And I say this as one who has worked with the mentally retarded) . It is no wonder he received an Oscar nomination. The epic is told mainly through the eyes of Johnny Depp’s character, Gilbert who despite his deep worship for Arnie is collected frustrated by the limitations that caring for Arnie places on his life. Top that off with a morbidly obese mother whom Gilbert is (reluctantly) ashamed of and a younger sister who is an oftentimes irritating troublemaker and you can view why Gilbert sometimes yearns for life to be a cramped easier. As a clerk in the local grocery store, Gilbert has fallen into a relationship with an older married woman (played by Mary Steenburgen) but finds himself drawn to a fresh girl in town (Juliette Lewis) with whom he develops a kindly, then caring relationship. Strained relations with the town’s law enforcement officials ensue after Arnie repeatedly climbs the water tower and Arnie is arrested. Gilbert’s mother played by Darlene Cates) who hasn’t left the house in seven years, takes matters into her enjoy hands and the results are at once triumphant and tragic. Depp is grand as Gilbert. His sense of despair and self hatred after he loses control and hits Arnie seem totally realistic and understandable. The younger sister who seems like such a brat at the beginning becomes more humanized as we watch her vulnerability. The mother’s battle with shame and humiliation over her obesity makes us all more attuned to our hold extreme insensitivity. Quirky, no doubt, shaded – no doubt again. But ultimately, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” turns out to be a testament to adore, caring and family loyalty. A fine movie.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is my popular movie. I have seen it dozens of times and I never secure bored with it. The reason…Leonardo DiCaprio. Never mind “Spacious”. If you want to notice DiCaprio at his best, this is the film to recognize! As many times as I peer it, his portrayal of Arnie, a retarded soon to be 18 year feeble boy, never ceases to amaze me! His performance is spellbinding. DiCaprio becomes Arnie. This film is an extremely touching sage of family loyalty, albeit dysfunctional family loyalty. The title character is played exceptionally well by Johnny Depp, but it is difficult to focus on anyone but Leonardo DiCaprio. The best scenes in the film are those between Depp and DiCaprio. Gilbert is Arnie’s distinguished caretaker. His esteem for Arnie is undeniable but marred by frustration and on occasion, resentment that he has been saddled with the burden of being his brother’s keeper. He sums it up best with the line, “Somedays you want him to live, somedays…you don’t”. Gilbert is not as cruel as that makes him sound. It’s honest that he has no life other than Arnie and a “going nowhere” perambulate with a married woman. His two sisters are kept graceful busy taking care of their obese Mother, whom Gilbert describes as a “beached whale”. It all takes location in a dinky town where it seems objective about all of it’s residents want more out of life. Gilbert learns there is more to life when he meets a free though-provoking young woman who is passing through town. Naturally, this further complicates his already complicated life. I will most likely search for it dozens more times. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a handsome and bewitching film.

Episode 73 – Sandstorms: After falling into a pit of the Invid’s Flower of Life, Rand slips into a hallucinatory dream world where he learns more about the Invid’s diabolical intentions.

This collection contains one of the better installments in the “Elements of Robotechnology” series. Here’s a rundown:

1.Genesis Climber Mospeada English translation pilot: Attempts were made by Harmony Gold to commence each of the three series that made Robotech (Macross, Southern Horrible and Mospeada) separately in the U.S. before the producers stitched all three together into Robotech. This is the pilot for Mospeada. Appealing to inspect how it played out originally, not bad

2.Toy line Presentation Video: Half hour demonstration/presentation video introducing the boy’s toy line (characters and mecha) and a 12 cramped demonstration/presentation of the girl’s toy line (characters, costumes, etc) .

THE VERDICT:

Many feel that the Novel Generation myth arc is the best out of all three of the Robotech epic arcs, including the Macross Saga, and with obliging reason. The ultra-cool mecha and the ULTRA-INTENSE action as the freedom fighters literally bustle and fight for their lives against the Invid and accomplish their map through a treacherous world is unprejudiced awesome!!

If you’ve never seen Robotech, simply set YOU MUST. The action and the drama are compelling, clearly showing why Robotech became a pop culture icon. It is the series that forever build Japanese anime on the draw in the US. If you did grow up with Robotech, give these a inspect again. They’re tall for a slip down memory lane. You can’t lose!!!

Highest Recommendation

I found myself among those who worship the first generetion episodes of Robotech (based on the novel Japanese cartoon Macross) . However, my second choice in liking is this last generation (based on another Japanese cartoon: Mospeada) , the type of mecha they spend here is more accordingly to the first generation and quite modern in many cases, I obvious appreciate to move a cyclone!!!

In this boxed place edition, the Invid had taken control of Earth, and is up to Scott Bernard and other freedom fighters to reclaim the planet and win rid of the Invid once and for all. This is a must for any Robotech fan, but if you are not that familiar with the Robotech saga I strongly suggest that you assume a witness first at the previous 5.

Wow. I first saw Princess Mononoke during its itsy-bitsy theatrical release (twice) . Many people have issues with the dub, but this is by far the best dubbed anime ever to be released — I, like most anime fans, normally mutter on subtitles, but Neil Gaiman and the cast succeeded in putting sincere emotion into these characters. The casting of Billy Bob Thornton and Claire Danes might rub some ears the defective blueprint, but in my view the emotional impact is aloof there regardless of the peculiar accents. In any case, the Japanese track is included, and it’s phenomenal. As for its negate, most arguments about its violence and length can be dismissed by viewing it as a film, rather than as a cartoon. It’s not Disney. The position is a complex and handsome use in shades of gray. Don’t interrogate Akira or Macross either — it’s really not of the same genre.

The video and audio quality is the sort that you would spend to point to off your original home theater system. In fact, I found the Japanese soundtrack to be richer and better dynamically balanced than the English track (!) . Disney/Miramax really took advantage of the format by including BOTH the Japanese and English opening titles and credits — they are automatically selected depending on your choice of language via an angle switch. Transparent and ingenious. There are two sets of subtitles — one for the English track, and the other is the literal translation of the Japanese (since some liberties were taken in creating the English script) .

Disney was originally going to release “Mononoke Hime” without the current language track, which created an outrage among anime fans (who, myself included, signed a massive internet petition which eventually turned the tide) . I applaud this decision, as well as the magnificent attention to detail. It has made this unbelievable movie an even better value.

It is difficult to be profound about a movie that has been written about so distinguished. Powerful of which has been written is rather positive. Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, although it is an adult oriented film in terms of complexity, it has something for everyone. Princess Mononoke is engrossing on many levels because mighty like other anime features like Armitage III, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira, Princess Mononoke also confronts the whisper of technology head on. However, what is new here is that Miyazaki problematizes the duality of man vs. nature really expanding the spot to man within nature and calling for a sense of co-operation. Again, While other movies like Armitage III, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira are a shade darker than most, Mononoke is laced with hope and reconstruction.

Based on our epistemological framework we are looking for top-notch vs. unfriendly. We are always trying to position things up in a position of binary oppositions. Most viewers are looking to construct things “simple.” Juxtaposed against our longing for the simplistic, Miyazaki doesn’t manufacture judgements about righteous or defective. Miyazkai simply asks many questions. It is really unfair to accomplish any whine comparison but the reason this genre is attractive to a wider audience is that this genre and the movies that are produced within it are more “realistic” than the more accepted Disney animations offerings.

Another sub-theme is the healing power of nature which is genuine to the human need to conquer and control. Susan Napier writes: “At a more complex level, films such as Princess Mononoke actually works to resist and even confront definite public stereotypes, moving expansive numbers of moviegoers to seek at some of the myths of novel Japan in a more significant scheme.” The movie zeroes in on ecological issues, a far roar from the stereotypes we have of Japan as a giant impersonal machine. Along this same lines, the colossal four (listed previously) warn us unbiased as grand about the march of modernity and technology. In Princess Mononoke, it seems like Miyazaki is setting up a battle between man and nature. My sense is that it is man in nature.

No doubt, this is a complex movie. The interplay between Asitaka, Mononoke and Lady Eboshi is not a simple one. Within the confines of the chronicle, no one character is all awful or all suitable. All the characters are multi-dimensional and not one character is a caricature. A pivotal character is Lady Eboshi. Lady Eboshi’s involvement with Iron Town is not be dismissed as trivial. How is the viewer going to reconcile Lady Eboshi’s agenda and altruism? The beauty and wonder of Princess Mononoke is not so noteworthy that it provides answers but that it poses deep questions. I want to warn others not to perform the mistake I did. This is not that elegant director’s gash which was issued on Laser and VHS. If that is what you are looking for, WAIT.

I am completely in dismay why the studio would release the trimmed down version of this film on DVD!

Please please release the 202 microscopic version.

John Wayne produced, directed and stars as a very convincing Davey Crockett. Richard Widmark as Jim Bowie and Laurence Harvey as Col Travis are unbelievable in the roles as the two Colonels at odds with each other but are united for the cause.

Also starring is Richard Boone(every time I view him I quiz the stale “Palidan” music to inaugurate playing), a very young Frankie Avalon and western account Chill Wills, who recieved a nod from Oscar for his performance as “Beekeeper” in the supporting actor catagory. The music is hauntingly stunning, and will stop with you long after the film is over. Dimitri Tiomkin won a Golden Globe for his scoring as did Paul Francis Weber for his equally pretty lyrics of “The Green Leaves of Summer”.The cinematography, also garnering a nomination from Oscar,makes this film a joy to peruse.

I had previously taped this film from a classic film channel,finally bought the DVD, and when I saw the brillance of this transfer and heard it in the enhanced 5.1 Surround I was in movie heaven. The describe in the fresh theatrical widescreen and the colors looked blooming. Every sound from the galloping of the horses, to the cannons blasting, the dialouge and the music were crystal distinct. There is also a broad documentary included on the making of the film, where you will peer the huge John Ford making an appearance on the space and adding his expertise as well.It may also be viewed in French and Spanish and also has subtitles in those languages.

So why only 4 stars for my rave review of this film and the DVD? ….As I mentioned I had this on tape and watched it many times. I noticed a couple of my current scenes are now missing and the film somewhat shorter in length. I especially missed the miniature birthday party scene(if you have seen it before, you know what I am talking about) . This scene to me, depicted the growing closeness of the people inside the mission and the family like atmosphere.

This film is a sentimental accepted of mine, and I really hope someday MGM will release the entire film to DVD, until then I will certainly appreciate this terrific transfer. It’s absolutely worth the concept.

I savor the film “Pollyanna” and have been waiting for the DVD for what seems like forever. I am very impressed by it! The describe and sound quality are fabulous – so grand better than the copy I have taped off TV from the unhurried 80s. The film is presented in widescreen but I’ve realized not a lot goes on on the sides of the record in this particular movie; in other words, you really don’t obtain distinguished more action with widescreen than you would have with the pan & scan video or a TV-taped version. However, this IS the film as the director intended it, and I consider that’s stout. This DVD (actually two DVDs!) contains so distinguished mammoth stuff, I can’t even list it all here. Let’s objective say amazon.com’s list doesn’t even obtain INTO what’s on this DVD. There are so many miniature treasures, and something for everyone – Disney fanatics, Hayley Mills fans, movie freaks, and (naturally!) Pollyanna fans. My approved features so far are the featurette on Pollyanna advertising, the one about how they restored the picture/film to form the colors how they should have been, and the one about Pollyanna merchandise. Plus, the audio commentary by Hayley Mills and the (now unhurried) David Swift is insightful and captivating. I would also recommend the “Parent Trap” DVD for more of the same fun. The Disney co. really went all out for these DVDs and they are well worth the money. And if you’ve never seen the movie – it’s an adorable family flick that I’ve loved for nearly 14 years. I hope you like it, too!

I was a bit nervous seeing this movie as I was shy it was going to live up to it’s title and be intention too sugary sweet. I was pleasnatly surprised and even moved afterwards.

Pollyanna is a delicious movie that lifts the spirits and provides many life lessons without ever being preachy or feeling like a school lesson. I was genuinely entertained and even a bit surprised at the valiant steps the movie takes. Would you consider this movie features a preacher most everyone fears, or has a bittersweet ending? I conception not. Well there’s plenty more here to surprise you. Unbiased give it a chance.

About the only thing I fault the movie for is being a bit too long. Some scenes unprejudiced seem to go on and on, but that’s what chapter stops and the expeditiously forward button are for.

As for the DVD presentation, it’s terrific. The movie looks and sounds pretty plus the second disc is honest jammed packed with extra material. I was enraged to listen to the commentary, but sadly it’s as sugary and pudgy of deceptive emotion as the movie is not. Serene the other bonuses are well worth the extra bucks and there will probably never be a better presentation of Pollyanna.

1. The majority of the fifty-six motion pictures included are artistically essential and the collection as a whole is a sheer delight which belongs in the library of anyone who loves classic cartoons. The residence includes such masterpieces and favorite favorites as “Duck Amuck”, “Bully for Bugs”, “Deduce You Say”, “Swiftly and Furry-ous”, “Long-Haired Hare”, “Rabbit of Seville”, “Rabbit Fire”, “Rabbit Seasoning”, “The Scarlet Pumpernickel”, “Wabbit Twouble” and “Duck Dodgers in the 24-1/2 Century”. All the films, even the weakest, deserve preservation, restoration and DVD availability.

2. The selection of complete shorts spans two decades (1940-59), according to year of initial theatrical release. This means that the heyday of Porky Pig (1936-39) is excluded, along with the historic Harman-Ising period (1930-33) and such early characters as Bosko, Buddy and Foxy. On the other hand, the area is also free of material from the Warner cartoon studio’s years of decline (1960-64) and decay (1965-69) .

3. Within the 1940-59 span is an intensive focus on the six-year “middle” period 1948-53, when the Warner cartoons were at their technical zenith. Fully half of the films in the collection were released during the three peak years of 1949-51 (ten in 1950 alone) . The high degree of concentration allows for appreciation of the studio output of a particular era, lent inequity and variety by the broader context.

4. The star of the point to is unquestionably Bugs Bunny, with twenty-one cartoons. There is an adequate amount, for a starter status, of Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Sylvester & Tweety. Key films of the Road Runner, Pepé Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn and Quick Gonzales are duly included. Principal supporting characters like Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam and Marvin the Martian are well-represented, and the Tasmanian Devil makes a token appearance. The bill is rounded out with a few one-shots and curios.

5. The individual directors at Warner’s animation studio are as significant as its character stars. A chubby twenty-five of the films (almost half) are by superstar director Chuck Jones (and written by Michael Maltese) . Most of the rest are directed by Friz Freling, with several by Robert McKimson and one by Arthur Davis. Only three films are directed by the big Bob Clampett.

6. There are no films directed by the legendary Tex Avery, who departed the studio in the early 1940’s, or the influential stylist Frank Tashlin.

7. Most cartoons are voiced by the incredible Mel Blanc.

8. All cartoons are scored by Music Director Carl W. Stalling or his immediate successor.

9. Most important of the anomalies is the awful showing of the ultra-popular (and ultra-”violent”) Road Runner, with only one episode (albeit his debut) ; while tired ragged Foghorn Leghorn encores with an undistinguished tedious episode — rather than, say, “The High and the Flighty”, his memorable pairing with Daffy Duck. In keeping with Rule #6, Avery’s Oscar-nominated classic “A Wild Hare” (1940), the first “accurate” Bugs Bunny cartoon, is supplanted by Jones’ “Elmer’s Candid Camera”, a rare prototype from earlier that year which features the debut of Elmer Fudd and the still-evolving Wascal Wabbit. And the extras, in their mania for completeness, include the curious excerpts from the feature films TWO GUYS FROM TEXAS and MY DREAM IS YOURS twice each, but only one version is digitally restored.

10. Not all of these Golden Era cartoons are masterpieces or good classics, but the less exceptional films included portray the high standard against which the astonishing stand out. A technically gross quota quickie like McKimson’s “Rabbit’s Kin” shines because instruct artist Stan Freburg’s endearingly boring Pete Puma character is memorable. A couple of agreeable duds (Davis’ “Porky Chops”, for instance) have been thrown in for grand measure, and even these help to offset the overall excellence of the remainder.

11. Organization is minimal, with most of the Bugs Bunny material on Disc One, Daffy and Porky on Disc Two, and the others in an “All-Star” free-for-all on Discs Three and Four. The cartoons are presented in seemingly random order, but this very randomness is exactly how audiences experienced them both in theaters and on television.

12. The hours of extras are an embarrassment of riches.

13. Such beloved masterpieces as “Beanstalk Bunny”, “Duck, Rabbit, Duck!”, “Robin Hood Daffy”, “The Singing Sword”, “The Three Minute Bops”, the Oscar-Winning Rabbit’s “Knighty-Knight Bugs”, and (supremely) “One Froggy Evening” and “What’s Opera, Doc? “, have been withheld for future DVD editions. The dwelling is designed to whet the appetite for more and leaves the grateful viewer with considerable to perceive forward to.

THE GOLDEN COLLECTION is worth more than its cost in dollars and is an infinitely better investment than the cheap alternate “Premiere Collection”, which simply duplicates Discs Three and Four with no extras. Forrest Gump is a rare movie that succeeded on all levels. It was a box office crash ranking among the top five highest grossing movies of all time. There are advantageous performances all around. Sally Field is feisty as Forrest’s mama, Mykelti Williamson is silly as Bubba, Gary Sinese as Lt. Dan is a perfect rough edged foil to Forrest and Robin Wright as Jenny portrays the confusion that young people of the times felt perfectly. While all those performances are of high quality, Forrest Gump is Tom Hanks’ tour de force. He is utterly colorful as Forrest. He is in virtually every scene of the movie and never once does he fail to astound. He becomes Forrest and makes you care what happens to him. Mr. Hanks deservedly won his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar for the role and cemented himself as the best actor of his generation and one of the best of all time.

Forrest Gump is one of the best film of all time. Definitely the best Zemeckis’s work so far and he has keep so remarkable soul and depth to this 1994 Academy Award winning Best Represent. This movie portrays the life of a slow-witted character who gets embroiled in various ridiculous situations. He was a Vietnam war hero, received a congressional medal of honour, shook hands with many US Presidents and was a successful owner of a exiguous company. We acquire to seek many world events through the eyes of a supposedly “lifeless” character. The run and poke of the movie was perfect as we pace through various historical events like the Vietnam War, assasination of JFK and the Watergate Scandal. The line “Forrest, you have to do your best what God has given you. Be courageous Forrest, be dauntless in everything you do. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna gain.” really moved me and brought me tears. No movie had bring such emotion in me. Robin Wright did her role well as Forrest’s esteem interest and complements well to Forrest’s life. The actors truly brings the characters to life and I must salute Zemeckis for choosing the perfect cast. The technical aspect of the film is honest profitable. The visual effects is unlike anything we have seen before. Many movies have not fully utilised the CGI effects to complement it. Nowadays, filmmakers impartial want to explain what special effects they can do rather than what the special effects can do for the film. In Forrest Gump, visual effects are utilised to their best to build incredible scenes. Scenes like the flying feather, Lieutenant Dans’ missing legs, Vietnam War, meeting of the president is fair fabulous. This is what visual effects is all about. To effect impossible scenes to the tall conceal. Alan Silvestri’s film earn is one of the best scores I have ever heard.
