Well, there are five reasons. The first four are found in the review of the DVD set of all five; here is the last one:

5. Gestalt. Call it what you want, but consider the conceptual continuity of these three movies. 1985 remained the “present” for all the films, right? Even this one and BTTF3, made some years later, preserved 1985 as the fulcrum. Quick quiz: of all the eras depicted, which one was the best: 1885, 1955, 1985 or 2015? Tough question, given that there were at least three distinct 1985s, etc.

But look: even the “best” 1985 was, in significant ways, not as good as 2015. Our predicates, then, are that obstacles can be overcome, the past reinvented as needed, and, most importantly, “the future is what you make it.”

I’ve found no clearer demonstration of a fundamentally optimistic philosophy in any movie I ever saw. Even though these films intentionally avoid sentimentality (all right, you could argue that), they express a relentless optimism that enables characters and, derivately, ourselves, to take charge of our situations, invent new solutions and fulfill Doc Brown’s mandate. Make mistakes, learn from them, experiment, and then move forward. The past does not have to trap you; it is only a platform for a better future.

You cannot leave the movies without feeling more empowered about your own life. And it does not get any better than that.

A film by Robert Zemeckis

“Back to the Future Part III” is the third and concluding chapter to the “Back to the Future” trilogy. For many years this was my least favorite film in the trilogy, but watching it again for the first time in years I have new appreciation for it. “Back to the Future Part III” is a satisfying and worthy end to this trilogy.

At the end of the second movie the DeLorean is struck by lightening (which we already know provides the necessary 1.21 gigawatts of energy required for time travel) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) is sent somewhen in time. Marty (Michael J Fox) is stuck in 1955 Hill Valley, but just after Doc and the DeLorean disappears a letter arrives for Marty. The letter is from Doc and was written in 1885. It was left as the post office with the instructions to be delivered on that particular date at that particular time. The letter says that Doc is alive and well in 1885 and under no circumstances is Marty to try to go back and rescue him.

Marty returns to the 1955 Doc Brown and enlists his help to recover the DeLorean which was left in a cave for 70 years. While recovering the DeLorean Marty discovers a tombstone with Doc’s name on it…and the date that Doc died was only a week after he wrote the letter! The tombstone reads “shot in the back by Buford Tannen (Thomas F Wilson) over a matter of $80″. There is no way Marty is going to let this happen, so he puts gas in the DeLorean and travels back in time to 1885 to help Doc. Of course, if it was that simple, we wouldn’t have much of a movie, so complications evolve. The DeLorean ruptures its gas line, so that it leaks gas and can no longer be driven under its own power. Part of the movie is Doc and Marty trying to get the DeLorean back up to 88 miles per hour, but there is also the matter of Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen who still intends to shoot Doc over that matter of eighty dollars…or will history change and will Marty’s name on that tombstone? This final installment also introduces a love interest for Doc Brown in the person of Clara Clayton (Mary Steenburgen), the new school teacher with an interest in science.

This movie is much more of a straight forward action/adventure/comedy (whatever) movie. The time travel serves to get Marty in the past and back to the present, but there isn’t as much playing around with time travel as there is in the second movie. I still think this might be the weakest of the movies, but it is a very fun ride. While this movie will never reach the “classic” status that I feel the first one will, this is a very enjoyable movie and is a fitting end to the trilogy. Good stuff.

This is the collection that every “Homicide: Life on the Street” fan has been waiting for – and got – back in 2006. For some reason it is being rereleased and repackaged. It includes all 122 episodes of the seven seasons of the original series, the Law and Order cross-over episodes, plus the movie “Another Homicide” that aired in February 2000 and was the last we fans ever got to see of our beloved series.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, “Homicide” was an original crime drama that aired on NBC between January 1993 and May 1999. It was based on David Simon’s book, “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets”, which was based upon Simon’s experiences in 1988 when he spent a year as a civilian assistant to the Baltimore Police Homicide Unit so that he could document what life was like in a big city homicide squad. His extensive notes, interviews, and observations were eventually published as the book.

Much of the cases chronicled in the first two seasons of the show are adapted from actual events in the book. The first two seasons focus on rookie Tim Bayliss’s first case – the murder of 11 year-old Adina Watson whose murder is never solved and haunts him for the duration of the series. The original cast was truly brilliant, but to get a third full season the show’s producers had to delete veteran actor Jon Polito (Crosetti) from the cast and pretty up the cast by adding Isabella Hoffman as shift supervisor Megan Russert.

There was an entire episode, perhaps the best of the series, dedicated to detective Crosetti’s suicide at the beginning of season three. Crosetti left no note, and apparently had no huge looming problems in his life. He just chose to fill himself with alcohol, tranquilizers, and antidepressants and then throw himself into the Chesapeake rather than return to his job after his vacation, in spite of his deeply held religious beliefs that would make you think this is a choice he would never have made. This is one thing you’ll see on Homicide time and time again – the writers are not afraid to leave the tough questions unanswered…forever.

Season four is also great, although two more original castmembers depart – Beau Felton and Stan Bolander. The two additions to the cast include Mike Kellerman, whose boyish, fun-loving exterior hides a cagey and complex detective with a penchant for self destruction. He is transferred from arson to homicide as a result of the help he renders on closing the case of an arson-related homicide when a dead body is found in a burned warehouse. Also, J. H. Brodie, a news cameraman who is fired because he gives a tape showing the attacker of an elderly woman to the police rather than to the station for which he works, is also added to the cast. He is apparently meant to be an analog of David Simon. The only problem is, Simon took great pains to keep himself out of the story while Brodie is constantly included in the plot, making him a somewhat awkward although likeable addition.

By season five, the “NYPD-Blueing” of Homicide is becoming a bit more pronounced. Never having stellar ratings, the series was forced by the network to show less detective work and gritty realism and more of the personal lives of the cast members. Still, the episodes are excellent. In this season, Michelle Forbes, the new M.E. with a “Queen of the Dead” vibe, speeds into town and becomes involved with Mike Kellerman. Frank Pembleton is shown recovering from the stroke he had at the end of season four and struggling to return to full duty. Elijah Wood stars as a the spoiled sociopath son of a Baltimore judge who believes he can get away with anything, including plotting the murder of his own judge mother. Finally, there is the apparent suicide of a long-since departed detective that turns out to be a murder.

Season six is where things begin to go downhill in the show. At the conclusion of season five it was determined that detectives would rotate between departments. This was used as a vehicle to introduce three largely uninteresting and even unlikeable castmembers – Det. Ballard who actually comes from a Seattle homicide unit, Det. Paul Falsone and Det. Stu Gharty. Falsone always came across as a sneak and Stu Gharty had already been shown up as a coward in an episode from a previous season. Melissa Leo’s character, Kay Howard, is now completely evicted from the series. Still, there are some interesting developments. In “Subway” Pembleton gets an opportunity to speak with the dead for a change rather than for them. Bayliss, at the ripe old age of 37, decides to explore other facets of his sexuality, much to the surprise of Pembleton. Kellerman’s execution/shooting of arch-criminal Luther Mahoney in the previous season leads to all out war between the police and Mahoney’s family that ends up in a shootout in the squad room and also with Bayliss taking a bullet for Pembleton. Both Pembleton and Kellerman resign from the force.

Season seven is largely forgettable. Bayliss has converted to Buddhism following his brush with death and becomes “The Zen Detective”. Giardello’s son joins the cast as liason between Baltimore PD and the FBI, although the two look more like brothers than father and son – the age separation is just not there, and neither is any semblance of a believable family connection. Michael Michele joins the cast as ex beauty queen/detective Rene Sheppard and does as good a job of helping this show jump the shark as Ted McGinley could have ever hoped to do.

The main episodes from season seven worth watching include those that wrap up Mike Kellerman’s story after his exile at the end of season six – the two parter “Kellerman P.I”. There are also the episodes that further Tim Bayliss’ character development where he is forced to shoot the killer of a Buddhist monk in self defense – “Zen and the Art of Murder”. The other storyline worth watching involve episodes on the Internet killer, who is released on a technicality but vows to Bayliss that he will kill again. These two storylines – the Internet killer being freed and Tim discovering that he can kill if he has to – collide in the excellent series finale “Forgive Us Our Trespasses”.

The movie aired about nine months after the series finale and has Giardello running for mayor. He is shot by a man whose son is addicted to drugs who does not like Giardello’s stand on drugs as more of a treatment problem than a crime problem. The entire cast from the series – and I mean everybody – shows up in this film. Besides helping solve the case, Pembleton gets to hear one more confession – that of Bayliss admitting to the shooting of the Internet killer and demanding that Pembleton “bring him in”. This is a crime that Bayliss’ heart can get past but his head cannot. As a final revelation, we discover that the dead have ready access to coffee, but not expresso.

This is, without doubt, the best ever cop show bar none. Better even than the Wire, excellent though that is. The character development throughout the series is wonderful, the dialogue is intelligent and witty, and the plot lines weave wonderfully behind the relationships which are in fact the main point of the show. In the best possible way it is in fact a cop soap!

In a film of beautiful nuance, Richard Attenborough captures the horrors or war and the dignity of those who must endure, soldiers and civilians alike. The stellar cast of “A Bridge Too Far” (a veritable who’s who of acting greats) sets this film apart. Sean Connery leaves behind the cool assuredness of Bond and faces futility with a mug of tea while Anthony Hopkins, a proper Englishman in Hell, surrenders with dignity, only reluctantly accepting chocolate from the enemy. James Caan is a particular standout. With true American grit, he bends all the rules and makes good on a pledge. The scale of the film could have wrought disasters on par with the campaign it portrays. Fortunately, the immensity of the Market-Garden campaign, which historically met its Waterloo at Arnhem, doesn’t swallow up the stories of individual characters, of the Brit with umbrella for instance or the Dutch resisters who spy for the Allies.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Bridge Too Far! Click Here

Few World War II flicks showcase the absolute beauty of the European countryside. In “A Bridge Too Far,” the landscape, made all the more picturesque in its contrast to the gore and destruction, is certainly an additional star and supports the wisdom of shooting this expensive epic in the Netherlands. The wide-angle approach, as well as the moving score, give balm to eyes and ears now accustomed to the tortorous naturalism of “Saving Private Ryan.” Attenborough pulls back, thankfully. In its final scene, “A Bridge Too Far” achieves poignance without dialogue, without bluster, and without the common contrivance of summoning tears with half-baked, insipid bathos. Sir Lawrence Olivier and Liv Ullman stare straight ahead, the fresh graves of British paratroopers lining their path from an elegance destroyed, from an order and faith utterly shattered. The scene is perfection. And the film itself is close to it.

Cornelius Ryan’s nonfiction saga is masterfully told in the film adaptation. MARKET GARDEN, hoped to be one of the death blows to the German Reich, was daring and ambitious, but failed to bounce the Rhine and bring the war to conclusion. Locations in the Netherlands included the actual Nijmegen Bridge, drop zones outside of Oosterbeek (which is next to Arnhem), the Deventer Bridge closely doubling as the bridge at Arnhem, and many scenes filmed at the Dutch Infantry training center at nearby Harskamp. Producer Joseph E. Levine and Director Richard Attenborough drew equipment from numerous nations, including quite a few museum relics, to create this film. What they did not have, special effects and props departments created in order to create a realistic and mostly historically accurate rendition of this September 1944 battle in Holland. Where the film deviates from the book is that the movie tends to paint the Allied planners as blind to the possible flaws in the operation and German Field Marshal Model is portrayed as a cowardly fool. In reality, Model’s immediate actions, though based on incorrect assumptions, greatly contributed to the containment of the Airhead north of the Neder Rijn. A BRIDGE TO FAR ranks highly with films like THE LONGEST DAY and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN in terms of intensity and historical accuracy.

This was another good season of “Dallas” that picks up where the last season set ends; Bobby’s been shot and it’s only a question of who did it and why. If this seems a bit familiar, it should, as ‘Dallas’ already did a cliffhanger about someone being shot earlier in the series. Packaging wise and quality wise, the transfer to DVD was great and the packaging is the same as the previous few seasons. Extras wise … this area needs improvement and is part of the reason, in my opinion, this isn’t a five star set. Yet again we’re stuck with a pointless short feature talking about the fashion of the show which, to me, feels like we’ve gotten before in other sets. This was such a big season with a big event at the end of the season. Why no commentary from ANYONE? It seems like a big missed opportunity to get some insight from the cast.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dallas – The Complete Eighth Season! Click Here

Another minor critique of this season was that it was longer then previous ones but little seemed to happen in each episode unlike in previous seasons. Plots felt as if they dragged on and when they were wrapped up, at times it felt rushed or over simplified. Yet, there were some changes to the show that I felt gave viewers something new to deal with. The character of Miss Ellie for this season was taken on by veteran actor Donna Reed. It felt like a reset or start-over for the character as Donna Reed took over and put her own stamp on the character. She dressed up a bit more than Barbara Bel Geddes would, she seemed more concerned with Ewing Oil and with making Clayton feel like he fit in with the Ewing clan more. Plot wise, Donna and Ray continue to have marital problems, Sue Ellen and J.R. play nice for a good portion of the season before things go back to being interesting with them dueling one another, more Ewings come into the picture and Pam and Bobby both have issues to work through. In all, though things feel slow, there’s still a lot of stuff going on to keep viewers entertained.

Definitely a quality t.v. series that puts many shows of today to shame. Buy it, you won’t be disappointed.

The ‘84-’85 season of “Dallas” was a pivotal one in many ways. It saw the show being somewhat overshadowed in the ratings by that ABC upstart “Dynasty”; it was the year that Barbara Bel Geddes was replaced by Oscar/Emmy-winner Donna Reed in the role of the beloved “Miss Ellie”; and it also saw the “departure” of another popular cast member at season’s end. Though these developments may have been new and shocking to dedicated fans, there was enough of the old to keep ‘em satisfied.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dallas – The Complete Eighth Season! Click Here

J.R. (the superb Larry Hagman) is still up to his same old tricks but fids himself smitten by the new girl in town, Mandy Winger, played by Deborah Shelton. Unlike other of the oilman’s conquest, Winger really appeals to J.R., not just sexually but on an “intellectual” level as well. He is determined to get her at all cost, including sending off-and-on spouse Sue Ellen (the magnificent Linda Gray) back to the bottle and the sanitarium.

Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Pam (Victoria Principal) are still in love, although Bobby is going to marry Jenna (Priscilla Presley). Pam goes on a wild-goose chase, spearheaded by you-know-who, to find beau Mark Graison (an unseen John Beck).

Katherine Wentworth (Morgan Brittany) is still crazy and Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval) carries on his lifelong mission to bring down Ewing Oil in honor of his “dead daddy.”

Reed brings a different take on “Miss Ellie,” something that didn’t quite fair well with fans. However, credit must be given to the actress for stepping into a part that was so engrained in the memory of fans by Bel Geddes. It took a lot of courage for Miss Reed and she should be commended for doing an admirable job.

Besides, she did look better in the Travilla clothes.

Speaking of the fashion, this was the year that the producers went all out. The men, though adequately dressed, took a backseat to the glamorous attire of the ladies. In appears that every female cast member, be she main, recurrent, or having a one-shot appearance, got to wear “the” dress, one that really turned heads. According to the bonus feature on Travilla, the show was trying to get on the “Dynasty” bandwagon with the clothes. Regardless, the women look “mah-velous,” to borrow from Billy Crystal.

The season finale, “Swan Song,” is, by far, the best of the season, featuring brilliant work from Duffy and Principal and an Emmy-worthy musical score by composer Lance Rubin. The final five minutes are poignant and demonstrate what the show was capable of when the writers really went to work…

Now, if they just could’ve come up with something better for the next season’s finale…but that commentary is meant for that compilation upon its release.

A 12 year old girl, born in space, whose bones are so fragile she can never land on Earth. Astronauts who have lived in space so long hard radiation has riddled their bodies with cancer. Hard men making hard decisions, unsympathetic bastards who nonetheless drive the engine of progress. This is quite simply one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It deals maturely with a great deal of unresolvable issues, including the human drive towards exploration, the personality and sacrifices of the explorers, and perhaps most importantly, who exploration benefits.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Planetes: Complete Collection! Click Here

Planetes is set against the backdrop of a very basic extrapolation of our world. The overarching plot involves orbital terrorism and humanity’s first drive towards Jupiter. The rich countries, who would benefit from Jupiter’s exploitation as a limitless source of cheap fuel, and the poor countries, who having no military or political strength will probably never benefit. This show is as much about our world as about a possible world 100 years from now.

Perhaps I’ve made it sound like a dry, ptolemic drama, though that is far from the truth. The first DVD contains quite a bit of humor and doesn’t introduce the main plot points at all, a humor much of the series maintains even as it exposes us to the human costs of exploration. This show is everything entertainment promises to be and so seldom is: entertaining, enriching, informative, intellectual, and inspiring.

Planetes is one of the greatest drama series ever created, though you might not think so from it’s outward appearance. In this age of information, western audiences scream for ever greater realism, grittiness, and violence, focusing on sacrifice and suffering and at the same time forgetting the purpose that it serves. The world of animation, and particularly the animation pouring out of Japan in a raging torrent, is largely popular for it’s flash and not for it’s substance, despite the fact that substance is there in ample quality for the discerning viewer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Planetes: Complete Collection! Click Here

And where does Planetes come in? Planetes is an anime with the styling of a realistic Western Drama, a Realistic Epic set in the not-too-distant future that focuses on the people, their sacrifice, their world, and greater ideals and yearnings that it serves.

You could say that Planetes (which is Greek for Wanderers) is simply a story about astronauts in space collecting debris garbage. But this show is SO much more than that.

The first time I saw this show, I was very off-put by the first episode, as it starts out like so many anime, with Japanese quirkiness and awkwardness, but very quickly hints at something far greater. From the very first episode we are shown a world of great ideals and dreams, of righteous beliefs just under the surface of the unfair world if only you can look for it. Throughout the show this same theme resonates again and again, being attacked but never thwarted by the never-ending cruelty of reality. It takes many forms, from from not wanting to destroy a peace plaque to protect a satellite of war, to helping people from a tiny third-world country test their space suit and get it certified for space-worthiness even as the world government seizes the country and it’s representatives in space.

While the heart-touching (and at times heart-wrenching) ideals keep coming up, it’s the characters who embody these choices of practical vs.idealistic conflict that give the show it’s heart. Almost every major character in the show gets character development time, showing why they are the way that they are. As their stories unfold before our eyes and we gain insight into their feelings, we come to identify with and sympathize with their feelings. I can think of no better example of this then the Russian astronaut’s story wherein (spoiler alert) we learn of the death of his dear wife, and how one small trinket she had on her when she died drives him to search through the debris of space endlessly to find the message written inside. When he finally finds the item (a compass) and sees the message inside, I think it was one of the most profound moments of any drama I had ever seen. Have you ever had a premonition of tragedy to come, have you ever wished for the safety and happiness of someone you love? Have you ever had to move past losing a person you love to live life again? Such was the struggle of a single character in a single episode!

There are many subplots which continue simultaneously, from the idealistic astronaut’s arguing and (spoilers again) eventually love for the seemingly cynical rough talking astronaut (who despite all appearances is actually just as idealistic as she is) to the struggle between the terrorists seeking to destroy all space travel and the world government taking advantage of small nations. And as the series progresses, you may find yourself, like me, wondering just where it is going. Rest assured, while it may seem to derail toward the end, destiny pushes events to a head, and ultimately toward one of the most satisfying conclusions to any anime I can recall.

I could talk about the dramatic music, the historical opening, the pastel colored highly-detailed animation, the incredible realism (no sound in space!), the superb voice-acting in the Japanese dub, the INCREDIBLE drama in the final episodes (the most dramatic moment in any television show I have seen comes in an episode where the main protagonist is stranded on the moon with a terrorist, and has the choice of stealing her air, or dying a horrible death from oxygen starvation {watching the seconds tick down as she stares at the oxygen tanks, flashes of everything she has ever said about love and sacrifice playing through her head had me worked up more than I can ever remember being from a TV show}). Really though, any fan of serious animated drama, or just drama in general owes it to their self to give this show a watch. It was undoubtedly the greatest show produced that year, and one of the best anime I have ever seen. The world would be a better place if more people watched shows like Planetes.

I was going to hold out on buying these LSH DVDs until they release them in whole seasons… but then, with the disappointing early cancellation of the show after Season 2, I realized it might never happen. So I am glad I finally bought them… even though there are no extras, it is great to have these on DVD, commercial-free.

Legion of Super-Heroes Vol. 3 contains the final five episodes of the first season… which were pretty good, especially for longtime Legion fans. They are:

- “The Substitutes” (the Legion of Substitute Heroes makes it to the animated world!)

- “Child’s Play”

- “Chain of Command” (Cosmic Boy returns, hooray! He was sorely missing, as one of the original 3)

Happy 50th Anniversary, LSH — Long Live the Legion!

Unlike some of the other cartoon series that have been released, Legion of Super-Heroes comes full circle and has a real and imaginative ending. It’s sad to see such a cool cartoon end, but it ended the best way possible.

William Wyler’s Oscar-winning BEN-HUR (1959), produced by Sam Zimbalist (who died of a heart attack near the end of filming) and based on a best-selling late 19th Century novel by Lew Wallace, is one hell of a movie experience. Watching a brand-new, pristine camera negative copy, I could not believe that the opening Nativity scene and the Resurrection finale were the same movie. There is just so much here. This remake of the 1925 silent epic, runs 3 hours and 45 minutes, including powerful roadshow bookend music by Miklos Rozsa. It takes its leisurely time in telling the story of a Jew (Charlton Heston) and a Roman (Stephen Boyd), raised as best friends, who become bitter enemies in the Holy Land of Jesus Christ’s life. Director Wyler was always known as a painstaking perfectionist who would exhaust cast and crew by doing take after take after take of every scene. But the result for the audience is enthralling.

Wyler had never made a Biblical epic before and wanted to work in every genre; his BEN-HUR is the one with a literate brain. It is hard to believe it had major writing problems, multiple writers, and scenes written the night before they would be filmed. It flows beautifully and is continually engrossing, despite its near four hour length. The cast is impeccable, including Martha Scott, Cathy O’Donnell, Jack Hawkins, lovely Haya Harareet, and Oscar winner Hugh Griffith.

If you are looking for the sea battle (directed by Andrew Marton), it is about 70 minutes into part one. If you are seeking out the greatest chariot race in movie history (choreographed and directed by Yakima Canutt), it is about ten minutes after the intermission. The Christ scenes are handled with taste and subtlety; we see only his back or his hand and never hear his voice. In fact, non-Christians might have a difficult time understanding what is going on in those scenes with Jesus, including an impressive Sermon on the Mount near the movie’s end. The art direction and costumes are absolutely gorgeous, and Robert Surtees’ use of ultra wide-screen Camera 65 is masterful. Most of all, Miklos Rozsa contributes the music score of a lifetime. Everyone won Oscars for their distinguished work. No wonder this BEN-HUR won eleven Oscars the same year as SOME LIKE IT HOT, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and ANATOMY OF A MURDER. It is a masterpiece. The audio commentary, by scholar and author Gene Hatcher and Mr. Heston, is thoughtful and insightful.

The 1925 silent version, starring Ramon Novarro as Ben-Hur and Francis X. Bushman as Messala, is on disk three of the new and magnificent four disk set. In some ways it is even more impressive than the remake. Novarro and Bushman give performances of a lifetime, the 143 minute length is a good 75 minutes shorter than the 1959 version, the color tinting is very beautiful, the sea battle and chariot race are sensationally good by any standards, and the silent version has far more Jesus Christ scenes and in two-color Technicolor. Carl Davis’ orchestra score is outstanding, as always.

The disk four bonuses include two major documentaries, one for the 1994 tape version and one brand-new for this 2005 DVD restoration. We also get “BEN-HUR: A JOURNEY THROUGH PICTURES”, several 1959 movie theatrical trailers, and a gallery of vintage newsreels heralding the arrival and covering the premiere of the lavish remake in 1959. This $40 DVD set is a work of art and deserves a place in every library, even if it takes you a while to see all four disks of material. Amazon.com has it for $30, not much more than the cost of a family of four going out to a new movie at night. With both the 1925 and 1959 versions included in flawless prints, this DVD set gets my highest recommendation.

This film when it was released in 1959 saw it’s studio MGM teetering on the edge of bankruptcy and the fact that this film cost in 1958 close to $15 Million dollars was most assuredly a make or break film for the studio.

William Wyler the film’s director, in order to make this film unique as if a running time close to four hours was not enough, filmed it in an aspect ratio of 2.76:1 using what was called MGM Camera 65, an Ultra Panavision process.

This film was one of only two films that were filmed in that process which is the widest of processes used in film to date.

Filmed utilizing 8000 extras, 300 sets, and over 100,000 costume changes this film epitomizes the word grand and released a few years after the Ten Commandments, it helped quench the public thirst for Biblical films.

This new DVD release is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and the LFE channel(Low Frequency Effects) is apparent on two standout scenes, the Sea Battle scene, and the now infamous chariot scene which last close to 11 minutes.

There are quite a few special features on this DVD release most of which appear on side two of this disc including a documentary, Ben Hur: The Making Of An Epic, which is just under an hour long.

There was an open casting call for the lead role in this film and they have included on this DVD the original screen tests by Leslie Nielsen, and Cesare Danova which are interesting to see even though the quality of the audio and video are not up to the level of the film itself.

Also included are storyboard art and posters as well as film biographies of the cast with pictures of them in character from the film.

Overall this film is an incredible piece of work and presented in it’s original aspect ratio with the enhanced sound combines to make an experience that should not be missed.

This film on the small screen does lose a little bit of it’s lustre especially if your television is under 27 inches in size but this film begs to be seen in it’s broad presentation, so even if you would normally shy away from widescreen presentations, this is the only way to view this film in my honest opinion.

On a rating scale of Bronze to Platinum…This film receives my highest rating…..Platinum!!!! Run don’t walk to pick this DVD up!!!

Steve Harvey is not on this DVD. Def Comedy Jam and Cedrice the Entertainer but no Steve Harvey. I’m afraid to order it again. If Steve Harvey is not one of the comedian then I think you should remove his name and his picture–right away! That’s the only reason why I rated this product so low. Other than the “missing Steve Harvey”, this dvd was funny and exceptional.

If you like comedy you’ll enjoy this

The “Nero Wolfe” TV series (2001-2002) is brilliant – casting, colors, sound and scripts. Producers Michael Jaffe, Timothy Hutton, and Howard Braunstein did a superb job bringing Rex Stout’s stories to the screen. Maury Chaykin, as Nero Wolfe, and Timothy Hutton, as Archie Goodwin, along with an excellent supporting cast – Colin Fox, Bill Smitrovich, Conrad Dunn, Kari Matchett, Saul Rubinek, R.D. Reid, Fulvio Cesere, Trent McMullen, and Francie Swift to name a few – do an exceptional job portraying Stout’s cherished characters.

The “Nero Wolfe” DVDs have some extras (though fans of the series would be happier with more). Included with the set are: “The Golden Spiders,” the 2000 TV movie which led to the series, “The Making of Nero Wolfe,” a short documentary which offers interviews with Timothy Hutton, Maury Chaykin, and others involved in the production of this marvelous series, and a “bonus” widescreen version of “The Silent Speaker.” To include the widescreen “bonus” of “The Silent Speaker” as an extra is ironic since all of the the episodes were shot in widescreen and should have been reproduced as such on the DVDs. And to make the set truly “mega” it would have been most gratifying if the European versions of the episodes were included in the set.

The producers choose some of Rex Stout’s favorite Nero Wolfe stories for adaptation to the screen. “The Doorbell Rang,” directed by Timothy Hutton, is the premier episode of the series. Nero Wolfe takes on “the big fish” J. Edgar Hoover to earn the biggest fee of his career. With the able assistance of Archie Goodwin, his intrepid legman, Wolfe triumphs over the F.B.I., earns his client’s admiration (Mrs. Bruner, played by Debra Monk: “Is there anything you can’t do?”), and solves a murder for the cops along the way. “Death of a Doxy,” “Champagne for One,” and “The Mother Hunt” are a few more of the well know Nero Wolfe stories included in the series. It’s a great sorrow to fans of both this magnificent series and Rex Stout’s wonderful books that the show was abruptly canceled before some of the other favorites, such as “In The Best Families” could be adapted for television audiences.

Five Stars plus Five Stars to Mr. Jaffe and Mr. Hutton for giving Nero Wolfe fans a series worthy of Stout’s tales.

This series is just a joy from beginning to end. The cast work together well (especially Hutton and Chaykin), the scripts are witty and engage your brain, the sets and locations are impeccably filmed and the DVD transfer is decent. I am normally very much a “watch once” person, but I found myself watching the same episodes over again just to enjoy the “eye-candy” and the subtle nuances of the interactions between the characters.

In case you don’t know, an unusual feature of this series is that the same core actors appear in all the episodes, but some are playing different roles each episode. We found that just added to the fun, but some folks might find it irritating, so be aware. Also look out for the use of colour – the series uses specific shades of green, red, and yellow all the way through.

I don’t understand why this complete edition is cheaper than either of the two separate series. Sure, the DVDs are in slim-line cases, but I actually prefer those. The video quality is identical to the more expensive versions (I already had series 1 so I compared the two). Given the many hours of pleasure you will get from it, this complete edition is a fabulous bargain.

If A&E ever release these as widescreen HD DVDs I will likely buy them over again.

The tragedy is that A&E canned the show after the second season, so there will be no more Nero Wolfe.

I have collected all of the DVD’s in this series and when this new one came out i pre-ordered it and recieved it today. By far this the one of the best. Little foot finally finds his long lost father(who was looking for him all this time) he never knew he had he gets a father and also a adopted brother Shorty, and has to make a decision to leave his friends and grandparents to be with his father. This was a very sad part of the movie. The song at the end of the movie that Littlefoot’s friends Ducky, Cera, Petrie and of course Spike sing Bestest of Friends is so sad, I actually almost cried. This movie really shows true friendship. I highly recommend it to old and young.

Like all the movies in this series, The Great Longneck Migration is another fine installment. Of couse, none of the sequels could equal the first theatrical release, but all of them have been very enjoyable for my two sons and have provided important lessons for me and my wife as we try to be as good at parenting as Littlefoot’s grandparents. One reviewer didn’t like the fact that both Littlefoot’s long lost father and his grandparents allowed Littlefoot to decide with whom he would live. In real life, of course, they would have fought over his custody in court and perhaps even outside of it for months or years with Littlefoot having to split time between them with no real home. If only so-called adults could act as mature and loving as fictional dinosaurs in doing what made the child happy. This movie, like all the others in the series, teaches the real meaning of friendship and love while being immensely entertaining. The nitpicking comlaints one reviewer had about voices and whatever went totally unnoticed in our household despite repeated viewings. I highly recommend it but more importantly, my boys loved it.
