I guess I must be the oddball that thinks that Robotech Masters/Southern Cross was the better of the two post-Macross series — It is in this reviewer’s opinion, that New Generation was indubitably the worst season of Robotech. Though there are some good aspects of New Generation, these have already been covered by others and so the reviewer will focus on what are deemed to be the bad things about New Generation that some fans tend to sidestep.

New Generation picks up where Robotech Masters left off, with the Invid invading the Earth after having detected the presence of their precious Flower of Life upon conclusion of the Second Robotech War. A returning portion of the Robotech Expeditionary Fleet (Carelessly called “Mars Base” although this fleet was returning from the homeworld of the Robotech Masters, not Mars..An editing mistake never rectified) is all but annnihilated– save for one survivor– Scott Bernard, who undergoes a series of adventures with his growing band of resistance fighters in a quest to destroy the Invid headquarters, Reflex Point.

I was extremely excited about the post-apocalyptic feel about this and the different tone this was going to take from its predecessors, but the execution was botched up. For starters, even though some fans say that this series has a “good storyline,” unlike the other two seasons which had an ongoing storyline with each episode building up from the one before it, New Generation took a much more episodic approach, particularly in the first half. Many of the episodes were characterized by adventures distinct enough from one another that they that could have been re-arranged in any order without deleterious effect on the overall storyline. i.e. It was not necessary to watch Episode B before C since none of the events in B had any bearing on C, and vice-versa. In this reviewer’s opinion, episodicity may be effective for casual Saturday Morning cartoon viewers, but not for getting absorbed into a long, evolved and rich tale.

In addition, the first half of the third season was marred by excessive repetition in that most of the episodes had a predictable formula: The heroes would overcome some problem and be attacked by yet ANOTHER random patrol of Invid near the end of the half-hour. This same formula was staple for the first 14 episodes or so, with few exceptions. This really accentuated the aforementioned episodic feel of this season. As a result, this repetition and lack of a continuous story-arc made New Gen feel more like a Saturday Morning cartoon akin to Voltron (nothing against Voltron, just not Robotech) than to the first two Robotech seasons. Like Voltron, most of the first approx. 14 episodes of New Gen were characterized by episodicity and a climactic (although predictable) big battle near the episode’s end. It didn’t help that Lunk looked a lot like Hunk from Voltron, but I digress.

The above mentioned episodicity problem of New Gen would have been more palatable had the Invid side of the conflict been better presented (like they were in Macross or Southern Cross). Unfortunately, although there is some focus on the band of freedom fighters, the Invid are mysterously left in the background, only manifesting themselves as a random patrol of adversaries that the heroes dispatch without much difficulty at the end of many of the episodes. For most of New Generation, there is very little showing the Invid side of the conflict– their thoughts, motivations, fears, plans..etc. It didn’t help that many of the episodes had little to do with the Invid (except with that random and predictable battle near the episode’s end), as the challenges the freedom fighters faced often had to do with other outside forces such as thugs, immoral businessmen, bad weather..etc. Interestingly, this is in sharp contrast to both Macross saga and the much-maligned Robotech Masters, where the enemy side of the conflict was a big focus of both.

Another thing that bugged me about this third season was the unsatisfactory resolution of some episodes. This may be a consequence of the episodic format of New Generation making it difficult for unresolved adventures to continue on over into subsequent episodes. Case in point was the ending of the episode where Rook defeats a rival gang and along with Rand meets up with her mom that she hadn’t seen in a long time. Rand explains that he had already spoken with her mom, although the episode never shows this- it was done behind the scenes. Her mom had never been mentioned up to that point nor was there any evidence in the episode that Rook was looking for her mom. Inexplicably, without her mom ever saying a word, the reunion doesn’t even last 10 seconds before Rook inexplicably takes off leaving her mom behind. She mentions something about thinking her mom was disappointed in what she had become but the character development in that sequence fell flat and the viewer is left thinking that there could have been much more. Again, there were many instances like this throughout the series with unresolved story arcs, cut corners, and missed opportunities for character development.

The first 14 episodes were so repetitive and episodic that by the time that the storyline picked up in the last 12 episodes or so, it was too little too late. Regardless, both the character development and story improved considerably in the second half. Around this point the mystery surrounding the simulagent, Ariel, and her visions kick into play,as she plays a key part in unraveling (finally) some of the Invid plans. Other standout moments include Sera developing human emotions and beginning to question the Invid ways, Lunk’s breakdown setting off a temporary disband of some members, and Rook/Rand’s relationship beginning to take off. Unfortunately, I find Annie to be more annoying than Lynn Minmei can ever hope to be and easily wins the coveted honor of “The Jar Jar Binks of Robotech” for me. I just found it so unbelievable that the band would let this tiny, annoying girl with no combat usefulness whatsoever tag along on so many dangerous adventures. It would have been the equivalent of Minmei joining the Skull Squadron, failing to shoot down more than one enemy plane, yet somehow surviving all the missions! I understand Annie was meant to be comic relief, but Macross and Southern Cross did without such a character.

Other things that made me cringe about New Generation was that many of the actions scenes were cinematic to the point of incredulity. In Star Wars, stormtroopers could be shooting the heroes in plain sight and miss them utterly. Well, New Gen took this principle to new heights. There were many, many embarrassing sequences like this but I will recount here one in particular. In one of the first episodes, Rand had turned on his protoculture-powered blaster and alerted nearby Invid of their location. The Invid had the heroes surrounded and were shooting at them at *close range* in a clearing(of course Annie was just doing nothing), and the blasts would continually go past the heroes’ shoulders while they were turned away from the blasts, having a full conversation to boot, and ignoring the enemy fire! At least in Macross and Southern Cross, targets made attempts to avoid enemy fire, whereas in New Gen, enemy fire would continually miss even though the target would not even try to get out of the way! This can only be attributed to really lazy animation.

As much as I absolutely love The Robotech music, I am of the opinion that this differently-flavored chapter could have been given a few tunes that better described its post-apocalyptic feel. Still, the basic Robotech music works well just not as well as it does with the first two chapters.

Although New Generation is the worst of the three Robotech seasons, it is still a crucial part of the saga, particularly, if one wishes to be up to date with the latest project (Shadow Chronicles) and any subsequent ones.

New Generation is actually worth closer to 3.5 stars, but due to the reviewer’s opinion that the average reviews for this part of the saga are significantly inflated (as high as Macross??? WHAT?!), he gives New Generation 2 stars.

Nice 5.1 sound but i dont see any new scene or something its still the same but with new sound

I wonder if this movie could be made today – after all, it doesn’t have any computer-generated special effects, it demands the viewer’s complete attention, and really needs to be seen more than once to appreciate fully the meaning of all of the scenes. Incredible too is that the writer (Bruce Joel Rubin) was working on the filming of this and his more popular movie “Ghost” at the same time. Director Adrian Lynne wisely avoided some of the more sacharrine touches that Rubin had in the original script (such as the view of “Heaven”) and added many subtle disturbing elements of his own. The final result is a film that you will think about long after you see it, a man’s journey through the bardo state to his final enlightenment. In a way, this is the cinematic equivalent of a Pettersson symphony – an emotional catharsis after the long, dark night of the soul. I’m not ashamed to say that I cry like a baby every time I watch it.

Comparisons with Bierce’s “Occurrance at Owl Creek Bridge” and “Carnival of Souls” are inevitable and not out of place, but “Jacob’s Ladder” has more layers than either of those and ambitiously takes on the psychological layers of one man’s life, the tension between the comforts of home, wife and family and the unfufilled desires he harbors.

There are some violent scenes and very disturbing imagery throughout the movie; after all, it *is* about war, fear, and death. However, none of it is gratuitous, and the use of strobe lighting, quick cuts, and odd camera angles keep the viewer from being able to see anything definite. But don’t say you weren’t warned….

The DVD’s documentary and deleted scenes, along with the director’s commentary, will enable the first-time viewer to get a more complete idea of what is happening. I’ve watched this film at least a dozen times, and never fail to see something new in it each time. Sound and image quality are excellent.

This one isn’t for casual viewing; it is *certainly* not a Saturday-night time killer, nor is it a “horror” movie in the standard sense of the term. Still, absolutley my highest recommendation.

This criminally underrated masterpiece of psychological horror broadsided audiences who were expecting … well, come to think of it, what were they expecting, exactly? Billed and promoted as a kind of pseudo-Argento horror experience, it’s in fact one of the bleakest head-trip movies ever — a closer cousin to films like Roman Polanski’s “The Tenant” than “Friday the 13th”.

Opening with Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) in Vietnam, the movie flashes forwards to his life back in the States, where he lives an isolated existence as a postal clerk. He has a shy, touching relationship with a girl (Elizabeth Pena) he has met at the post office, but he cannot seem to really connect with people. Something in him has been damaged, it seems, by the horror of the war. Worse, he’s hallucinating badly and suffering from flashbacks.

Slowly a plot emerges. We see shots of him before the war, happy, with a wife and son, and then learn that he may have been used as a subject for unorthodox drug experiments. He meets other vets who are similarly disturbed, and a gentle chiropractor (Danny Aiello) who has some sage words of advice about his past and future. And then we get a series of unsettling scenes that subvert everything we have seen and force us to read it in an unsettling new way — which of course would be absolutely criminal to reveal here.

Let’s face it — this isn’t a fun movie. It’s bleak, depressing, disturbing, and ends on the darkest possible note. But it’s also made with absolutely consummate skill and complete assurance in the material. This wasn’t a hatchet job, but a real piece of art, and it needs to be seen in that light.

I own both the US and international versions of this film, and the international edition is much better. Both versions carry a slight sexual tension throughout between Leon and Matilda, and the uncut version is more pronounced in this area, but that isn’t the reason to buy it.

The extra 24 minutes on the uncut version provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between the two as the film progresses. For example, in the US version Matilda never becomes a real “cleaner” or hitman. It’s only hinted at when they shoot a jogger from a rooftop with blanks. In the uncut version, Leon takes her completely under his wing and teaches her the trade, including scenes where the pair run around killing bad guys and such. In the process, Leon teaches her the “ring trick” by tossing a grenade at a victim and keeping the ring and grenade pin in his hand. This scene sets up the final scenes in the movie in a way that the US version left short and unexplained.

If you enjoyed the US version, you’ll probably love the uncut version more, if only because the characters and their relationships are much deeper.

French director Luc Besson (”The Messenger”; “The Fifth Element”) made his U.S. film debut with this intelligent thriller of an Italian hitman who is untouchable. “The Professional” stars Jean Reno (”The Big Blue”) who plays Leon, a professional hitman with ninja-like skills, who eliminates rivals for a mob boss (Danny Aiello).

After a corrupt cop (Gary Oldman) eliminates the family residing next door due to a drug transaction gone wrong, Leon finds himself the guardian of young Mathilda (Natalie Portman in her screen debut). Taking Mathilda under his helm, Leon teaches her the art of the “cleaner”. However, danger lurks around every corner, and Leon must protect Mathilda from the same cops who killed her family.

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, “The Professional” was originally released internationally under the title “Leon”. However due to the feeling that American audiences might find some material unacceptable, over 24 minutes of the film was edited out. Finally, Columbia/Tri-Star has made an excellent decision in releasing the uncut, international version of this excellent film in the U.S. as it originally was called in August 2000.

While the film’s central theme revolves around Leon and his job, the subplot where Mathilda develops an attraction for Leon is reminiscent of the novel/film “Lolita”. The chemistry between both characters in a father/daughter relationship can be intense, especially as we notice that Mathilda is in her puberty-stage.

Jean Reno is excellent as always, and Gary Oldman gives a chilling performance as Stansfield, the wicked DEA officer who murdered Mathilda’s family in cold blood. However, the real scene-stealer in this film has to be Natalie Portman. This beautiful young girl radiates beauty and professionalism throughout the film. Her porcelain-looking skin, and her big brown eyes are well utilized in this film, making her character more childish, yet mature to a certain extent. Portman proved to audiences in this film that she was no flash in the pan, and in her subsequent films, she continues to be a scene-stealer. She is truly Hollywood’s most gifted young actress.

In the international version, most of the 24 minutes that were left out in the film’s 1994 release in the U.S. mainly involves both Leon and Mathilda going on “cleaning sweeps” where she gets first hand training in the art of assassination. The other half of these minutes focuses on Mathilda’s attraction to Leon. Her persistent attempts to be intimate with Leon all fail, but we finally understand why Leon remains a loner when it comes to affairs if the heart. Some might be uncomfortable about the idea of Mathilda and Leon sharing a bed together, but Besson paints this scene as one involving platonic love and not sex.

In wrapping up, I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys a nonstop, high-impact thriller in the same tradition as the “Matrix,” “Blade,” or “Dead Calm”. Luc Besson truly is one of the world’s greatest action directors, and “Leon” captures his magic. An excellent, pulstaing film from beginning to end!

We recently bought the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse CD and I LOVE it. So when I heard that a new DVD was coming out–Mickey Saves Santa–I of course wanted to buy it for my son. (We buy several new holiday DVDs every year.)

Mickey Saves Santa features 3 episodes:

*Mickey Saves Santa

*Mickey-Go-Seek

The new episode, Mickey Saves Santa, is only about 17 minutes long–with a very simplistic plot line. In fact, Mickey and Donald are the primary Disney characters. The rest of the gang are relegated to showing up at Mickey’s for a slumber party (right before Mrs. Claus crashes the party requesting Mickey’s help), and then at the end of the story.

Santa is apparently stuck at Mistletoe Mountain and Mrs. Claus asks Mickey to help. Mickey then asks Donald to be the co-pilot. He protests, almost beginning a tantrum, while Mrs. Claus gently scolds “Now Donald–be nice or you won’t get any presents!” She does this about 5 times through the entire story! At the end of the “adventure”, Donald is rewarded with tons of gifts for “being nice”. Never mind that his natural inclination is to throw tantrums and be greedy–all that matters is that, because he’s “played nice” for awhile, he’s now deserving of a crap load of presents. (Not because the Claus’s are grateful, but because Donald “played nice”. What a message to send to kids! Unfortunately, this world rarely rewards those who “play nice”–let alone those who actually ARE nice and do so because they’re nice at core.)

My personal rant aside, this DVD isn’t worth the rather expensive price, in my opinion–especially since the other 2 episodes air frequently on Playhouse Disney…and Mickey Saves Santa probably will be airing in December, too.

I was expecting a full-length movie with an engaging plot, colorful animation, and ALL the characters–not a short, simplistic mini-story featuring a Mrs. Claus with a white Elvis ‘do.

There aren’t many extras on this DVD, either–just a “Dance-Along” to the rousing song “Hot Dog” (which is just the characters dancing around to the ending Clubhouse song–no dance step instructions or anything) and a Picture Puzzle Game which has kids guessing which one of three pictures is being formed by a (very simplistic) on-screen puzzle. I think we got through 15 or more puzzles, so there’s a decent amount. But still…

If your child is a rabid fan of Mickey Mouse or the Clubhouse TV show, they’ll probably love this DVD. However, I think that Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas is a better buy. If you prefer CGI animation, Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas is stunning–but some of the thematic elements aren’t so “nice”, especially for younger kids.

This DVD is 72 minutes in length. It consists of three episodes, one being Christmas themed and some bonus features which are music and some puzzles. If your child likes MMC they will probably enjoy this DVD.Our three year old granddaughter does like this DVD and has watched it several times since we bought it about one week ago.It would be nice if all three episodes were new ones but most kid’s DVD’s do not do this.THINK DORA DVD’s.We bought this at Target for $3.00 less than Amazon’s price.

I really wanted to like Colonial House. I really did. I thought 1900 House was good, Manor House was better, and Frontier House was excellent. I figured by having a whole colony of people, this would be the ultimate living history. Unfortunately, this was not to be. My biggest question is did the Voorhees family even read the rules on the application, or did they go just to prove how 21st century they really are? I mean, she didn’t even TRY to live by the 1628 laws. Skinny dipping on the Sabbath? In 1628? INSTEAD OF CHURCH?? And how about Jonathon Allen? To really feel as if it were 1628, and to prove to all he would abide by rules of days gone by, Mr. Allen should have kept his homosexuality a secret until the final day, and especially to not come out in church! That would have proved to all that you were truly trying to live by 1628 laws. Come on folks! If this were truly the seventeenth century, both subjects would have been burned at the stake! If you’re going to sign up for a project like this at least TRY to abide by the laws and rules of the times!! That’s the whole point – to see if a 21st century human could survive in a different time period. If you want to skinny dip, fine. If you’re gay, fine. But neither was acceptable in the time period you were attempting to live in. Even the British guy ventured off to the future for a couple of days to go drinking in a modern pub. Why did you all sign up? To promote your political agendas? This is not a knock at anyone’s lifestyle – this is a frustrated viewer and lover of experiments like these “House” shows. All you proved to those of us watching was that you all couldn’t hack it. So you decided to make it almost into a 1960’s commune instead of a 1628 colony.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Colonial House! Click Here

To me, the attitude of the Voorhees family really brought the whole project down. Their 21st century ideals spread like a disease to the others in the colony except the first Governor, who was chastised by the rest for truly following the rules of 1628.

At least the participants in the past “House” series, for the most part, made an attempt to live in the chosen period of which they were selected.

I sure hope the powers that be are a little more selective in choosing people for any future experimental “living in the past” House shows. Colonial House was not worthy of the quality I’ve come to expect from PBS. It was as if Fox or WB took it over and tried to create controversy instead of a quality reality show.

I watched Colonial House with mixed feelings. After reading the reviews here, I expected to hate it. Overall, I enjoyed many elements of this reality show. First, I liked the setting. Maine was absolutely beautiful, and the costumes were excellent.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Colonial House! Click Here

I liked the Hentz’s. I also liked Jonathon Allen. Despite one over-dramatic episode at the end of disk 1, I felt he really did try to play his role quite well and he was quite likeable. I felt sorry for the governor trying to get people to conform to the rules and laws of the times.

I did not care for the Vorhee family at all. Mr. & Mrs. Vorhee spent a great deal of time showboating, and I hated the part where they went skinnydipping instead of attending church like everyone else. If they want to lead 21rst century lives, why volunteer for this experiment? I felt they were a drag on the show, and the experiment would be better off without them, particularly Mrs. Vorhee whose irritating and shrewish opinions we were subjected to on a regular basis.

Overall, not bad, although Manor House still remains my favorite. Too bad, the show did not screen candidates more carefully. A more committed cast would’ve made the show more interesting.

I saw this documentary just before going to Pompeii. It was very informative even though made several years ago (what the heck, the eruption was in 79AD.)

“Hara Kiri” is directly translated as “belly cutting,” and is the name best known in the West for Seppuku, a traditional act of suicide that was considered an honorable method of death amongst the Samurai of medieval Japan. To die by Seppuku was a privilege reserved for honorable men, and was formal and ritualized as is common in Japanese tradition. It was an extremely painful way to die, and required absolute will and self-control.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Harakiri – Criterion Collection! Click Here

Kobayashi Masaki (”Kwaidan,” “Samurai Rebellion”), a master director of Samurai films, uses this ritual as the focus of his film “Hara Kiri” (Japanese title “Seppuku.”) The stage is set in the late Tokugawa period, a time when centuries of peace had rendered the warrior class moot, and Samurai without a rich lord to serve had nothing but their honor to sustain themselves. Forbidden by law, culture and training to seek their substance through less-honorable means such as farming or trade, the lordless Samurai were expected to starve and die with no word of complaint. One day, a hungry Samurai by the name of Hanshiro Tsugumo arrives at the gate of a local lord, requesting permission to perform Seppuku and end his suffering poverty through honorable means. And then the true story unfolds.

Probably his greatest film, Kobayashi dissects what it is to be “honorable,” and who is the true possessor of this abstract concept. The rigid code of the Samurai is symbolized through the relentless use of straight lines, as hard and unyielding as the swords which are the supposed soul of a Samurai. The code has long outlived its usefulness, and is a contradiction in the world of peace. Both the code and the men are dinosaurs, needing to either change or die.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Harakiri – Criterion Collection! Click Here

Hanshiro Tsugumo is played by the legendary Nakadai Tatsuya (”Sword of Doom,” “Yojimbo”). He is incredible as Hanshiro, being both the ultimate Samurai ideal and at the same time one who’s wisdom and compassion far surpasses those who speak of “honor,” relaxing comfortably behind their money and position. Hanshiro’s surface is one of acceptance and resolve, a man who has accepted his fate, but underneath is rage and righteous action, hidden and waiting to explode.

The pacing is typical of a Kobayashi film, and follows his pattern of a slow, slow build up that explodes with a violent and unexpected climax. “Hara Kiri,” like other Kobayashi films, is a slow fuse leading to a large bomb. Hanshiro’s story is complex, and he unfolds it delicately, so that all points are clear to the Lord and his men, as well as the viewers.

Criterion has recognized both the importance and the excellence of “Hara Kiri,” and put forth a DVD worthy of the film. Aside from a beautiful transfer and improved English subtitles, they have assembled video interview with Nakadai Tatsuya and scriptwriter Hashimoto Shinobu, as well as an introduction by Japanese-film expert Donald Richie. In print, there is an essay by film scholar Joan Mellen and a re-print of her Kobayashi interview.

Any fan of Japanese film and/or Samurai films simply must see “Hara Kiri.” Easily amongst the top 3 or 4 films of the genre, it is a masterpiece by every definition of the word.

“Hara-Kiri,” is an absolute classic. It is also one of the 3 greatest [if not greatest] Samurai films of all time. Not only is this a great Samurai film, it is also an outstanding drama. In fact, director Masaki Kobayashi stated that this film was more of an anti-samurai film, and he is correct. I must tread very carefully with this review, as to write too much of this film will destroy it for those of you who have not had the opportunity to see this MASTERPIECE of cinema. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi, the film deals with ONE individuals attack against the corruption and arrogance of the state. And in particular, one clan known as the House of Iyi, which is representative of the new unified state of Japan.

This is one of those films that transcends borders and nationalities–for it is universal. By this I mean that the films main protagonist, Hanshiro Tsugomo (Tatsuya Nakadai) represents the individual against the powers that be who are in charge. And in Hara-kiri, Hanshiro is about to give this House of Iyi a costly lesson in humility, with a touch of vengeance thrown in–that this clan’s own arrogance has brought upon themselves. The period that this film takes place is circa 1630: not too long after Lord Tokugawa has established the Shogunate as the supreme power in the now unified Japan.

However, unification comes with a price. In order to consolidate his power, Tokugawa has purged many of the clans spread throughout Japan of their status. Therefore, many clans begin to fold up, and their Samurai must eke out a living within the confines of a profession befitting a samurai. This was very difficult to do, as farming was not acceptable to their Bushido code. Therefore, many of these former samurai found themselves starving since there were very few occupations they were allowed to do. The now masterless samurai are referred to as Ronin. Without the clan, and near starvation, many samurai wandered the country in search of work with another clan in the hopes of securing employment.

Yet, with so many ronin roaming the country, and many clans now purged by Tokugawa, work was a near impossibility. Which brings us to our main protagonist in the film: Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) in his most celebrated role to date. The films narrative begins with Hanshiro Tsugumo coming to the gates of the House of Iyi. Hanshiro Tsugumo is a proud man, yet something has occurred recently that brings him to this particular clan which boasts of its honor and courage. He has asked for permission to commit Hara-kiri in the courtyard of this House. It is here that the Counselor of this clan, Kageyu Saito (Rentaro Mikuni) proceeds to tell Hanshiro Tsugomo of another samurai who also wanted to commit Hara-kiri in this courtyard.

But there is something very different about this ronin Hanshiro Tsugumo. As the Counselor relates his story of this other ronin, Hanshiro listens intently—for Hanshiro too has a story to relate to this Counselor in charge of the House of Iyi. Hanshiro has not just come to this clan to commit Hara-kiri, there are more profound reasons why he has come to this House. And it is here that film begins with the telling of a story of poverty and sadness which has occurred in Hanshiro’s life. Hanshiro Tsugumo has come to the manor of the house of Lord Iyi, not only to seek permission of this Counselor to commit Hara-kiri on this clans property, but to lecture this clan…..and WOW, how he lectures them.

The Counselor of the Iyi clan, Kageyu Saito, is in charge–as the Lord of this Domain is away on business. And it is here that Hanshiro Tsugumo recounts a tale to this Counselor on the fate of his beloved son-in-law, daughter and grandson. You can sense the resentment of Hanshiro Tsugumo as he sees the hypocrisy of those around him. Hanshiro understands that the Bushido code, like the samurai, have changed. And with this, the film builds to an ever greater climax. I don’t wish to spoil this film for you, so I will not go any further, other than to write that this film belongs in EVERY cinema lovers collection.

Whether you like samurai, or foreign films in general, this film is POWERFUL. I have seen this film more times on the big screen, and video, than any other I have seen. And I NEVER tire of viewing the film. This is a MASTERPIECE of a film. As a warning to viewers who have not seen this film–DO NOT view the Donald Richie interview in the beginning of the film, as he gives away important parts of the film. Also, there is a terrific booklet that comes with this film, and you should read it—but only after you have seen the film. Once more, this is one of the GREATEST films in cinema. And it is one of my personal favorites. The film is a must see. Highly, highly recommended. [Stars: 5 plus infinity]

Being a fan of both Stephen King and George Romero, “Creepshow” has always been among my favorite horror flicks. Campy at times perhaps, but that’s the whole point – to bring a comic book feel to film. And it offers a perfect balance of silly comic horror and genuine horror, making for a very enjoyable viewing experience if one remembers not to take it too seriously.

What you get is 5 mini stories, some of them better than others but all offering plenty of shocks and chills. It opens with “Father’s Day,” where a deceased victim of murder rises from the grave for a nice little Father’s Day surprise. One of the better ones. “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” follows, where Stephen King takes on the lead role as a hillbilly who finds a meteor with a nasty habit of making green hair grow on, well, everything. This one is more funny than scary but still good. King does a great job as the clumsy and unintelligent-but-likeable Jordy Verrill. Next up is “Something to Tide You Over,” where a vengeful man (Leslie Nielsen) gets even on his cheating wife and her lover (Ted Danson) by burying them both in the sand and letting the tide take care of the rest. This is my second favorite of the bunch. It’s cool to see Nielsen take on the role of the “bad guy” for a change. Goes to show his versatility as an actor. Ted Danson is great too. What follows is “The Crate,” in my opinion the best one. It’s also the longest one. Hal Holbrook plays a loser whose nasty wife gets what she deserves when he finds a mysterious blood-thirsty creature locked away in an old crate. This is the darkest and creepiest of the stories. Pure fun, with top-notch acting from everyone. The final story, “They’re Creeping Up On You,” is the only one I’ve never liked. An eccentric millionare with a roach phobia just can’t seem to get rid of his little crawling friends no matter what he does. Anyone who doesn’t like roaches is advised to skip this one. The final scene will take away your appetite for at least a few days.

Now that I’ve talked about the movie itself (easily 5 stars), I have to comment on this sorry excuse for a DVD (0 stars). This has to be THE worst transfer ever put on DVD. I used to think it couldn’t get any worse than the first edition single-disc transfer of “Scarface,” but I was wrong. “Creepshow” was put on DVD just for the sake of putting it on DVD. NO CARE whatsoever was put into presentation. As another reviewer has mentioned, the movie literally “jumps” throughout the entire time. Grain and those annoying “hairs” appear on the screen almost every second. The VHS offers better picture quality; that says a lot. The only bonus feature of this DVD is the trailer, which I suppose is cool, but let’s get real. Another slap in the face is the scene selections. The inside of the DVD case advertises 41 scene selections in the “Scene Index” card, but that’s misleading, as the movie only has 21 actual scene selections. So if you want to watch one specific scene, 9 times out of 10 you will need to select the *closest* scene to the one you want and end up scanning forwards or backwards to get to the one you really want. Yet another example of a poorly thought-out DVD.

Bottom line: “Creepshow” is a great cult flick that deserves a MUCH better DVD. If you have the VHS stick with that. Only get this DVD if you no longer own a VCR or absolutely must own all of your movies on the DVD format. “Creepshow 2″ recently got a new DVD edition that does it justice, so maybe there’s some hope that “Creepshow” will eventually get the same treatment someday. Until then, we must settle for this lackluster DVD.

How can i ever express my glee toward this 1982 film? From the first viewing i fell in love with the timeless horror classic. This particular entry into the genre is notable for its uncannyand faithful tribute to the 1950’s horror comics (as distributed by EC Publishing), its comical charm, its fantastic effects, and its cult creators (Stephen King and George Romero, and effects by fan fave Tom Savini). Packed with five stories of the macabre this film is bound to please fans of horror as well as kids, adults, and most other moviegoers with its immortal style. The first tale provides us with a story regarding a cranky old man that was murdered by his daughter on Father’s Day because she grew weary of his actions against her. Knowing that you are watching a Romero/King flick only can assure you of the fun to come from said situation. The second tale of terror stars none other than Stephen King in what is perhaps horror film’s most enjoyable guest star role. King plays a simple hick who comes across a meteor which spreads its reign of terror around his home. King provides us with a truly memorable and quirky performance that is sure to remain in most people’s minds. The third tale involves a cheating wife and the vengeance of her spiteful husband on both she and her “other” man…naturally taking up on the EC tradition we can only expect the worse lesson for the wrath-ridden husband via supernatural means. The fourth tale is about a strange crate that is discovered beneath the steps of a college stairwell. Within lie the mysterious contents of an Artic expedtion…that we all know will only wreak their havoc. The final creepout is slowly presented to us in the form of an evil tycoon with nothing on his mind but money…and getting rid of filthy cockaroaches (or vice versa?). Each story is fantastically told and to top it all off we are provided with a wraparound tale that introduces the whole chi-bang. This is what fun is all about. No need to take this serious just watch it for the enjoyability factor and you won’t be disappointed. Fans will also find, much to their pleasure, a wide array of bedazzling special effects, oddball lighting, unique characters, and overall good direction and storytelling. A definite addition to any sane person’s video library. The dvd version is creepshow at its best. Presented in the best color, picture, and sound ever, don’t fret video buyers because the dvd sports nothing extra that you might be missing. Regardless of the lack of extra features this dvd is a no miss. Buy it

If, like me, you find most Hollywood “love” stories about as warm and romantic as a cold sleepless night in Seattle, then you’re in for a surprise. Not since Casablanca have I enjoyed a love story as much, and though they both end at the airport, the similarity ends there. This one is about marriage, family, and the connections and sacrifices that make marriage, parenthood and yes, love, worthwhile.

Nicolas Cage plays a harried but driven Wall Street executive playboy who wakes one day to find himself trapped in a life he never wanted, married to the woman he abandoned years ago. It’s a living nightmare at first, but the harder he tries to escape it, the more he begins to see that there are values and rewards that he somehow missed in his previous executive penthouse lifestyle. By the end of the movie, he’s learned a lesson he will never forget.

An unexplainable fantasy in the tradition of “Groundhog Day”, you soon find yourself accepting the unexplainable, even as the protagonist himself realizes there is no easy escape from his new reality, and learns to work within it’s framework. After all, life throws all of us some unexpected “curves”, and like the protagonist in this modern day Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Suburban Bowling League, we can become better people by accepting and embracing the crazy things life puts us through in the name of love. Chalk one up for old-fashioned family values in a feel-good movie with a message, served up without the sappy cliches.

Put the kids to bed early (The Family Man deals with some adult issues, and much as I enjoyed it, it would need a little editing before I would consider it a family film!), and just the two of you watch this one together with a bowl of popcorn and a glass of wine – you’ll be glad you did!

In the tradition of the best films that Hollywood ever had to offer comes this refreshingly honest movie that isn’t afraid to say that you don’t have to be rich, hip and cynical to be successful and happy with your life. “The Family Man,” directed by Brett Ratner, stars Nicolas Cage as Jack Campbell, a man who took the “road less traveled,” and turned his back on love for a career on Wall Street, and thirteen years later still doesn’t realize how empty and shallow his life has become. Then something happens; on Christmas Eve, Jack does a good turn to the right person at the right time. His name is Cash (Don Cheadle), and he just happens to be a guy with, well, connections. And the next thing Jack knows, he’s getting a “glimpse” of what his life would have been had he made a different choice all those many years ago. When he wakes up on Christmas morning, he’s not in his bed in his penthouse apartment, but in a house in the suburbs, sleeping next to Kate Reynolds (Tea Leoni), the woman he once loved, but abandoned. Wall Street is history; he’s now a crackerjack tire salesman at “Big Ed’s,” and he and Kate have two kids, Annie (Makenzie Vega) and Josh (Jake and Ryan Milkovich).

Needless to say, Jack is confused; and the enigmatic Cash isn’t about to let him in on what’s going on– that’s for Jack to figure out on his own. So Jack has no choice but to go on living his life– even if it’s not really “his” life. And it becomes a journey of discovery; not only for Jack, but for the audience, as well. And what follows may be fantasy, but it’s fantasy with a message, from some filmmakers who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is, and they do it well.

What director Roth presents you with is an examination of what life is really all about, and what– in the final analysis– is really important. And make no mistake, this isn’t a film that aims for the head, it aims for the heart, scores a bullseye and doesn’t apologize for it. Is it pure, true, realistic, riveting drama? Of course not, and it never pretends to be. What it is, is a film that stays true to what it’s all about and says some things that need to be said in this fast-food, cybersaturated world of the here and now. It’s a poignant, well made and well acted film that appeals to the universal sensibilities that in one way or another reside within even the most jaded, modernized and “New Aged” individuals. Because it’s an entreaty to the most basic of human needs and concerns.

Cage was the perfect choice to play Jack; he’s got a natural, sympathetic look that makes him easy to like, and combined with the emotional aspect he brings to the character it makes Jack someone to whom it is so easy to relate. it’s a performance that allows you to feel something; and that’s really what this movie is all about, capturing that sense of humanity that is so often lacking in people’s lives today. Cage makes it work, and he makes it work beautifully, because he lets you share Jack’s frustration, his loss, his fears and, most importantly, the hope and the love he ultimately realizes has been missing in his life. It’s a challenging role that Cage not only met, but surpassed with just the kind of exacting performance that was needed to put this story across.

Tea Leoni gives an excellent performance, as well, as Kate. It’s a sensitive, sympathetic portrayal that serves the character and the story with great effectiveness. Leoni makes something special out of a character that could’ve been just the “female lead,” with the purpose of being nothing more than the means of moving the story of Jack’s self-discovery along. Instead, she makes it her story as much as his by making Kate an endearing, truly integral part of the film, and she fairly sparkles on the screen.

The supporting cast includes Jeremy Piven (Arnie), Saul Rubinek (Alan), Josef Sommer (Peter), Lisa Thornhill (Evelyn), Harve Presnell (Big Ed), Mary Beth Hurt (Adelle) and Francine York (Lorraine). There’s no doubt that personal experience and frame of reference is going to play a big part in the way “The Family Man” is received by the audience. But Ratner, Cage, Leoni and everyone else connected with this project are to be commended for making an honest, heart-felt film with an important message about life in today’s world. It’s a film that says success isn’t just being the guy at the top of the heap, that it’s okay to just “be” whomever or whatever you are, as long as it’s what makes you happy and content. It’s a bold statement for a filmmaker to make today, and we can only hope that more artists will have the guts to make more movies like this in the future.

This, by far, was my favorite of all of the Super Mario cartoons that were produced, even if it did have the most un-original title ever (the fact that the number 3 is in the title kind of makes it laughable).

It is a very fun show, and is based rather closely on the 3rd Super Mario game from the original NES. This had some very, very memorable episodes, and what I really liked about it was the presentation of the various powers that the Mario Bros. could use in the actual game.

Now, this was a show produced for kids, so if you are an adult, and didn’t watch this when it was originally on, you may want to bypass it now, as it’s something that you probably won’t find much entertainment in at this point (with maybe the exception of anyone who is an EXTREME Super Mario fan, partiuclarly of the 3rd game, but somehow missed this show the first time around).

As far as I can tell, all of the episodes are intact, pretty much in there entirety.

There is, of course, the issue of the infamous Milli Vanilli episode, in which Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad all go to the ‘real world’ to see their concert, and the music group gets kidnapped by King Koopa. Now, it is true that the music has been changed. In the original airing of this episode, Milli Vanilli are shown on stage performing “Blame it on the Rain”. However, after the whole lip sync scandal broke out, this episode was re-edited with generic music in the place of the previous song. Unfortunately, this proved to make the concert scene make little sense because the generic music doesn’t even have any lyrics, and yet Milli Vanilli are shown on stage moving their mouths and singing (or, lip syncing, if you prefer). Then, Koopa shows up to kidnap them, and makes a comment saying “Blame it on King Koopa”, which is a joke that no longer makes sense in the edited version.

There’s also a scene later in the episode where after being kidnapped, Milli Vanilli are supposed to do a private concert for Koopa’s daughter, Kootie Pie (a.k.a Wendy, as she is known in the game.. the Koopa kid’s names were different in the game and cartoon). Milli Vanilli point out that they have no back up band. In a rescue attempt, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the Princess disguise themselves as a back up band to help rescue them. The joke here is supposed to be that none of them know how to play any instruments, so the music is supposed to sound bad with Milli Vanilli singing over it as they normally would. Unfortunately, this has also been changed, and oddly with the same generic music from earlier in the episode. So, the same music that everyone was excited about and dancing to at the concert is now supposed to sound horrible to everyone (except Kootie Pie, who is enjoying it).

It is true that the edited version is the one on this set. However, contrary to what another reviewer has posted, aside from the changes that I’ve listed above, everything else seems to be intact (at least as far as I can remember.. it has been years since I’ve seen this on TV). That other reviewer states that all references to Milli Vanilli are removed, and that is not true.

The name “Milli Vanilli” is mentioned frequently throughout the episode, and the Princess is even wearing a shirt that has their name on it. It is true that King Koopa at one point does refer to them as “Silly the Willies”, but that’s because he keeps messing up the name of the band and his kids have to keep correcting him.

Sorry for the long explanation for this one episode, but I thought this was important to explain for die hard fans of the show who remember this episode and are debating if they should get it or not.

The DVD presentation is a mixed bag. The menus of Discs 1 and 2 are nice. They are set up to look like the Mario 3 game. They feature Mario and Luigi respectively, and in both cases, it shows the character from the side, as if in the video game, and they hit a “?” mark block, causing things on the menu to change/happen when you make a selection. It is nicely set up.

Where the DVD disappoints (though, not suprisingly) is in the quality of the video. It has not been remastered, and there are even some brief parts (at least in a couple of the episodes I’ve watched so far) where it looks like the masters these were copied from may have been damaged to some degree. I noticed this damage issue in the final episode (or two episodes, if you count the fact that each one is made of 2 smaller stories). There are a couple of points where the screen just goes gray for a second. And it’s not my personal disc, other people have had the same problem (apparently the master was indeed damaged, and from what I have heard there is nothing that Shout Factory can do about it).

The general video quality isn’t suprising though, since most of the previous Shout Factory releases like the Mario Super Show and Captain N have not been remastered either. But, still, the video quality does knock down my review by a couple of stars. And the fact that the one episode has some damage is annoying.

The 3rd disc has some extra features, including character descriptions, and explanations about various aspects of the show. There is some interesting stuff, but is does get to be pretty redundant. While they are nice enough, the feature easily could have been split up and put on the first two discs. The total running time of them all doesn’t seem to add up to enough to warrant a whole separate disc. I think they did this just to make it seem like you are getting more than you really are.

Still, all in all the cartoon is a lot of fun, so if you are a fan of Mario, and if you watched this show back in the day, I do recommend picking it up.

Not only do I love this show just as much as I did when I was a kid, but my son – who shares my Wii with me and plays the current games in the Mario franchise like Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Strikers – really enjoys the use of these same characters in these short cartoons with very basic plots. This is not great storytelling, and the DVD set production could have used some more effort, but the cartoons themselves are overwhelmingly cute and enjoyable… I encourage you to ration the cuteness because it’s very easy to get too much TV time.

P.S. It seems as though Nintendo has severely drifted away from using the koopalings in favor of Bowser, Jr. If I hadn’t grown up so attached to the 7 koopa kids in SMB3, Super Mario World, and some other games, maybe I wouldn’t enjoy them so much, but I think they are used very well in these cartoons. If you like them too, make it known!
