This is a factual naval aviation story, intermixed with Army Air Corps rivalry and combat scenes. It provides a chronological view of one naval family- their love and adversity, including Navy and Army aviators supported by their loyal maintenance personnel who helped in the advancement of U.S. military aviation during 1920s to 1940s. Add, of course, a mixture of competition provided by the navy wives and their only rival- the United States Navy. Released 22 February 1957, The Wings of Eagles was considered an adult story, wrought with the thrills, laughter, and family hardships all to well experienced by the real heroes of this story- the pioneer naval aviation wives (there is still no “Hall of Fame” dedicated to these gallant ladies at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, NAS Pensacola, FL).

Ms. Maureen O’Hara who acted the gallant part of Mrs. Minnie (Bryant) Wead was well received by the “naval aviation wives of gold”, and was nominated at a Naval Aviation Cadet Recruiting Officers Convention, Long Beach, CA, as “Ms. Naval Aviation- 1957.” Other familiar actors included: John Wayne (CDR Frank “Spig” Wead), Kenneth Curtis (RADM John “Johnny” Dale Price), Dan Dailey (Chief “Jughead” Carson- loyal Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate), Kenneth Tobey (characterization of Lieutenant Jimmy H. Doolittle), Ward Bond (representing Hollywood director John Ford), Edmund Lowe (RADM William Adger Moffett, USN- Chief, Bureau of Aeronautics), and Charles Trowbridge (representing ADM Ernest J. King) whose one line was: “I like it…write it up”. The railroad boxcar scene, the hangar fly-through, the various odd aircraft shown, the newsreel aviation reports of winning the Schneider Cup of 1923, the loyal efforts and contributions by the aviation maintenance personnel keeping the aircraft flying were all real events. Today’s aspiring military aviators may find this aviation story of much interest.

This story may bring tears and some fond memories back to those pioneer naval aviation wives who are still around and had experienced it all. Their stories can relate back to the days of sugar white sands at Santa Rosa Island and of Coronado Beach; the babies they lost from the 1919 flu influenza; the open-air jalopy rides down old Warrington Road and Coronado Avenue; the screened front-porch bungalows of Bay Front, Pensacola, and Coronado Island; the seaplanes skimming across Pensacola and San Diego bays; meeting their husbands as they landed in their squadron fighters and torpedo planes following short at-sea flight operations aboard USS LANGLEY (CV-1); followed by the many naval aviator and bridge parties given at Mustin Beach and North Island officers’ clubs- all this on just a naval Lieutenant’s salary (with flight pay) to make ends meet during the Great Depression.

This is an MGM/ John Ford contribution to those “naval aviators in leather skull caps”- he did this well, focusing on the triumphs and tragedies often found within the War and Navy departments during the development of our country’s military aviation. This was also Ford’s tribute to Army-Navy aviation camaraderie- America’s early combat teams. Seen here are episodes of Army-Navy departmental budget rivalries; around-the-world “beat the Navy” Army Air Corps celebrations; CDR Wead at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during 1942 – 1943; combat films compiled by CDR Ford, USNR (Chief, Field Photographic Branch, OSS- worked for William “Wild Bill” Donovan, Director of OSS); and, the story of how CDR Wead got production approval of new “jeep” aircraft carriers on converted cruiser hulls- with the approval of ADM King and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. There is combat footage aboard carriers- a reenactment of CDR Wead aboard USS YORKTOWN (CV-10) as Chief of Staff/ Operations for RADM Charles A. “Baldy” Pownall, CTF-50, during the Gilbert and Marshall islands operations.

Interests in making this film concerning CDR Wead began with correspondence between Vice Admirals John Dale Price, Calvin Thornton Durgin, and John Ford. Ford received first priority from the Department of Defense (DoD) to film a story about CDR Wead, months ahead of an attempt by Warner Brothers Pictures Distributing Corporation. Priority permission to Ford was granted by Donald E. Baruch (Chief, Motion Picture Section, Pictorial Branch, DoD). The film was to be based upon historical material from DoD, tales from Price and Durgin, earlier correspondence received from CDR Wead, and a book by “Red” Futhven & Jerry Stagg titled “Staircase”. The public has seen this magnificent Ford tribute to CDR Wead since 1957. A newcomer to this film might ask- who was this naval aviator called Spig Wead?

CDR Frank Wilbur Wead, USN, acquired the nickname “Spig” during his Naval Academy days (1912 – 1916). He accumulated 9 years & 7 months total sea service prior to his accident. Together, Lieutenants Wead, Price and Durgin received their aviation wings 22 May 1920, NAS Pensacola, FL. Later, LT Wead led the U.S. Navy Schneider Cup Team to England and brought this famous cup to America aboard S.S. LEVIATHAN, October 1923. With LT Price they broke five seaplane records, 11 – 12 July 1924. Along with fleet exercises aboard USS LANGLEY with VT-2, there were staff duty assignments under Admirals Moffett and Joseph M. Reeves, and with 11th Naval District Commander. Wead wrote for leading magazines (The Saturday Evening Post and The American Magazine) and Hollywood during 1930s to 1940s. His final assignment was as commanding officer of VF-2. During WWII, he acquired combat duty aboard USS YORKTOWN, receiving the Legion of Merit (Combat). CDR Wead was relieved from active duty 21 July 1944, at Fleet Air, Alameda, California, where his last naval boss was RADM Pownall (Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet).

The accident: Tragedy struck Wednesday morning, 14 April 1926, during heavy electrical storm over San Diego and Coronado. Combination of power outage and hurrying in the darkness, LT Wead accidentally tripped, falling down dark stairway, fracturing his neck. This occurred in a two-story home he and Minnie recently rented: 600 9th Avenue, Coronado, CA Today, one can still see this home corner of 9th and H avenues.

Not your typical John Wayne war picture it shows the amazing chemistry of Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne it does seem that these two could never go wrong. This movie is no exception. It starts as John Wayne is learning to fly the first planes in the navy in a hilarious barn busting scene. At times it has a very Gomer Pyle feel to it at other times it has a Last Days of Patton feel.

The Transfer is descent for its age doesn’t seem to have been given anything special, though that’s not surprised when you think of John Wayne this isn’t the first movie to come to mind, the audio isn’t in 5.1 but it’s not a movie that lends itself to needing it. As most of the movies of the 1950’s it has that parent trap look too it, which to me ads to the charm of the movie. Of course let’s not forget John Ford Directed it.

In conclusion for 10 bucks it’s a great DVD to own. For John Wayne fans its must to complete there collection this comes from someone who is partial to Wayne’s westerns but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The packaging it’s a typical plastic case which is great to me. Its single disc nothing fancy just like the duke plain simple and to the point.

I found this DVD very disappointing. It attempted to present an interesting position about Jane Austen’s life but it fell short in the area of facts about her life. Nothing can be worse, in my opinion, than when a documentary distorts the facts about a famous person’s life but it is even worse when they get some of them completely wrong like this one did. Their attempt to make a more worldly perspective on Jane Austen was interesting but I found this annoying because it was the focus of the whole documentary after a while. At this time in history it seems that everyone is trying to make things more global! I am glad that women in Iran are reading Jane Austen and that India is turned on by it, that is great, but I wanted to know more about Jane Austen herself not have to endure some feminist plateau so that somehow we could take a simple Regency woman’s writing to push our own subjective views or cause. I also resented that the only man on the DVD that liked and talked about Jane Austen was portrayed as a person who was effeminant. Why can’t a man like Jane Austen’s books? Just because Jane Austen’s female characters were strong does not mean they were feminists. The kind of feminism that we experience now in the USA, something I am glad exists, did NOT exist in Jane Austen’s time. If you read her letters you would see she is a proper, subservient female of her own era. Certainly I have nothing against her characterisms of strong women, though. I would have liked to see in this DVD more attention to the accurate details of Austen’s life and work is all.

I was terribly disappointed in this DVD. It seemed more like an advertisement for other movies than a biography on Jane Austen. My $20 would have been better spent elsewhere. I think I would have discovered more about Jane Austen in a book than on this DVD. It seemed there wasn’t enough information to fill the time, so they highlighted several other movies made that were based on the Pride and Prejudice theme. I yawned through most of it. The little information they did reveal about Jane Austen wasn’t even very interesting. I know there is much more they could have told as I’ve been to the Jane Austen house in Bath. I learned more there in a 15 minute talk than I did on this DVD.

This is one of the better Anime’s to come out in the states and get air time on TV. The show appears on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim due to it’s graphic violence. I am sure though that if you are looking at getting this set you probably are already watching it. This is probably the best buy for getting the episodes. This set includes volumes 1 and 2 or episodes 1-9. The set also includes volume one of the Manga, OST 1, and what is best described as a radio show containing the characters on a cd. It also includes 3 booklets over the shows main characters with interviews from the creators. The case itself is sturdy with artwork on all sides and on the interior. If you live in a major city I would suggest picking this up from Best Buy as it is a little bit cheaper, not much though. If you are going to have it shipped than amazon would be the best bet.

This is a wonderful and amazing anime. Lots of excitement and drama and characters that live in all kinds of shades of grey. I truly enjoy this anime. The box set is excellently done with a very pretty box and loads of wonderful extras. I especially appreciated the manga.

So why the 3 star review? well this first pressing of discs appears to be defective. Bandai is experimenting with new copy protection and it causes serious problems for many DVD players. In particular seizures at episode 3 in disc 1 and episode 9 in disc2. That is provided that it works at all. People using blu-ray and in particular PS3 players appear to have much better success rates though.

First off, I am a fan of Italian horror films of the 70’s and 80’s. I had always wanted to see Night Train Murders, but it was never released in the United States making it nearly impossible to view. Instead of buying a bootleg, which I thought about on several occasions, I waited for its official release. After receiving my DVD, I was pleasently surprised by how good the film was. Like most Italian flicks, they “rip-off” or “borrow” ideas from American films. Zombie borrowed from Dawn of the Dead, The Beyond borrowed from The Shining, Conquest borrowed from Conan the Barbarian, and Night Train Murders borrows from Last House on The Left. So much in fact that it was released as Second House on the Left, New House on the Left, and Last Stop on the Night Train in other parts of the world. Many of the story elements are borrowed from Craven’s film debut, including characters and situations. Even though it freely borrowed from Craven’s film, I actually came out liking this film better. First of all it has higher production values so the filmmakers were able to heighten the cinematography, and other such aspects. I also liked how Night Train Murders was more disturbing and gritty. There were no awkward comedy moments like the ones present during Last House. There is more character development so you learn to like the two leading actresses more. In turn, since you like them better, you hate the goons more for the violoations they did to them. The director inserts a lot of flair and style while making a truely likeable revenge/exploitation epic that finally gets its just release in the United States. I’ve been waiting a long time for this film and I greatly thank Blue Underground for releasing a this steller DVD. The picture absolutely looks wonderful and the extra features were great. For fans of Italian horror, this DVD will not disappoint!

I agree that while this film borrowed heavily from Last House on the Left, Night Train Murders is the better of the two. Good production values, excellent cinematography, an Ennio Morricone score, decent acting and a tight script, set Night Train Murders above Last House and other films of this type. The first third of the film introduces the main characters and then gets them on a train (the night before Christmas) that is full of odd, quirky travelers – most of whom seem to be prone to indulging in one perversion or another. The “defilement” section of the film is a gripping, harrowing affair that escalates in viciousness before climaxing in a very brutal fashion. The final act does not live up to the scenes that precede it. While there is another escalation towards a violent outcome, the plot seems to falter in a couple of spots, and the eventual retribution seems tame in comparison to the acts which have ignited it. The character who gets revenge is a surgeon, and when we first see him he is cutting into people (using what looks like real footage) so I was expecting a truly grisly and horrific conclusion. However, the director’s desire to keep from glamorizing violence is probably why the ending feels somewhat restrained. As for the DVD itself, the image is pristine throughout most of the film, the sound quality is good and extras include an interesting interview with the director. However, one problem I have with the presentation is that the original Italian audio track with English subtitles is not an option, only an English dub is available. Still, this is another great release from Blue Underground and definitely a film which deserves a larger audience.

If you liked Morgan Freeman’s and Ashley Judd’s performances from “Kiss the Girls” almost 5 years ago, then you’ll love them again in “High Crimes”, a suspenseful thriller of a movie directed by Carl Franklin (”Devil in a Blue Dress”). The suspense of “High Crimes” takes place inside and outside of the courtroom as well…and it never lets up for a minute! The film focuses on Claire Kubik (Judd), a high-powered attorney, and her husband Tom (Jim Caviezel, “The Count of Monte Cristo”), a successful contractor with his own business, who are madly in love and are planning to have a family. But a burglary at their home triggers a chain of events that shatters their world. The FBI agents arrest Tom. The charge: Under his real name, Ronald Chapman, Tom, as a covert military operative, murdered civilians in El Salvador and has been a fugitive for the past 15 years. Tom admits he is Ronald and he was part of a clandestine operation that did result in a massacre for which Tom was blamed. But he assures Claire of his innocence and that the real perpetrators made Tom their fall guy because he alone could identify them as the men who gave and executed the order. As she prepares her husband in a top-secret military court, Claire realizes she needs help from someone who knows these rules — and is willing to break them. She enlists the aid of Charlie Grimes (Freeman), a former military attorney who relishes the opportunity to take on the very hierarchy that disgraced him years earlier. And the film goes on from there. “High Crimes” is simply one of the best legal thrillers ever made since “A Civil Action”. This is Ashley Judd’s best performance since “Kiss the Girls” and “Double Jeopardy” and Morgan Freeman’s best performance since “Kiss the Girls” and “Chain Reaction”! With two of the best actors today, a top-notch supporting cast (including Caviezel, Amanda Peet, Tom Bower), and explosive action, “High Crimes” is a film not to be missed! A terrific DVD addition to your collection!

Joseph Finder’s bestselling novel comes to life in this well-made, though somewhat predictable, thriller as a savvy and love-struck lawyer is pitted against the military and its covert actions. Ashley Judd plays Claire Kubik, a lawyer on the way to a partnership until her husband is arrested for a military crime he swears he didn’t commit. To defend him, Claire must navigate military law and threats, getting in deeper and more dangerously with every half-truth she uncovers.

The plot has fewer holes than most thrillers, although most viewers will see the “twist” a mile away. And that a law firm would jettison one of its promising stars because her husband was arrested is preposterous. Wouldn’t they help in the defense? Still, given the holes in most thrillers these days, these lapses are minor. The acting is solid, with Judd creating a gutsy, smart woman who is capable of both unfaltering love and fury. Morgan Freeman does a fine job with his thin material as a once-alcoholic lawyer who is “a thorn in the military’s side.” James Caveziel, as Claire’s husband, is less complex; his pleading got on my nerves by the end. Supporting roles by Amanda Peet (Claire’s floozy sister) and Adam Smith (a young military lawyer) are adequate, though not highly memorable.

The strength of this film is in the pacing and the seamless way in which it unfolds. The issues it raises about the United States’s involvement in El Salvador provide an interesting, though not fully developed, frame. Highly enjoyable, though not perfect, this film is a good way to spend two hours with a bowl of popcorn at hand.

Love him or hate him (many in Hollywood still do, hate him, that is, based on his cooperating with the HUAC – House Un-American Activities Committee back in the early 50s), Elia Kazan knew how to make damn good films, including such features as A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), On the Waterfront (1954), which won eight Academy Awards, including one for best direction and one for best actor in leading role for Marlon Brando, Splendor in the Grass (1961), and this earlier effort titled Panic in the Streets (1950), which also won an Academy Award in the best writing motion picture story category for Edward and Edna Anhalt. Starring in the film is Richard Widmark, whom I last saw in the one of the unfunniest comedies I’ve ever seen in National Lampoon’s Movie Madness (1983), so I really relished this opportunity to put that experience in the past as I knew Widmark capable of much better things having seen Pickup on South Street (1953), which I think is one of his best films (I have yet to see them all). Also appearing is Paul Douglas (It Happens Every Spring), Barbara Bel Geddes (Vertigo), Zero Mostel (The Producers), Guy Thomajan (The Pink Panther), and Jack `Believe it…or not!’ Palance (The Professionals, Torture Garden) in what appears to be his first silver screen role, credited as Walter Jack Palance.

The story, which takes place in New Orleans, or New Awlins’, if you prefer, begins as a seedy poker game breaks up early due to one of the players feeling all sick like…the others are annoyed, especially Blackie (Palance), as the man was winning, and they believe he’s using the old `I’m leaving early because I’m sick, not because I’m winning’ ploy to get out of giving them the chance to win back their money, so they follow him because the aforementioned Blackie is an especially poor loser and wants his dough back…to which they end up killing the man and dumping his corpse in the harbor…only thing is, the now deceased was truly sick, suffering a pulmonary form of the bubonic plague aka the black death (you know, that bug that spread across Europe and killed millions?), diagnosed by Lieutenant Commander Dr. Clinton Reed (Widmark) of the U.S. Public Health Service. He tries to impress upon the local authorities the importance of finding everyone who had contact with the relatively unknown man due to the extremely communicable nature of the pathogen, but police captain Tom Warren (Douglas), whose been assigned to work with Reed, has little faith in finding the killer as there are virtually no clues (the dead man has no ID as he recently arrived by steam shipper and entered the country illegally). Now Reed and Warren have 48 hours to crack the case, lest the disease take a foothold and spread across the country.

My favorite exchange in the film was between the characters of Reed and Warren, the two civil servants stuck with each other, Reed feeling Warren isn’t taking things serious enough, while Warren thinks Reed is over-reacting.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Panic in the Streets! Click Here

Reed: You know, my mother always told me if you looked deep enough in anybody, you always find some good, but I don’t know.

Warren: With apologies to your mother, that’s the second mistake she made.

This is a really strong film, although I’m not sure if it did too well the time it was released. The most striking aspect about the movie, in my opinion, is the dark haired Palance who played the role of the lead antagonist Blackie. He’s a truly scary individual, not only because of his lean, almost gaunt, towering physique, but also because quiet nature of his character, sort of a calm exterior barely containing seething cauldron of violence ready to spill over on anyone who goes against him (check out the scene where Blackie dumps the sickly Poldi, mattress and all, over the stairwell)…one really interesting thing, and something I think often tends to screw films up in less capable hands, is the inclusion of so many different facets of a story…the disease, the killer(s), the relationship between Reed and Warren, the relationship between Reed and his wife (played by Bel Geddes), the withholding of information from the public, risking the possibility of full blown outbreak vs. the fear of causing a panic that drives the killer, who may be infected, out of town, etc. Yes, there was a whole lot going on (perhaps too much), but it handled well, and with little or no confusion. One aspect that I really liked was the perception by Blackie that police were putting so much heat out there because he thought they thought the man had smuggled something valuable into the country, something he would be interested in…is it me, or did Zero Mostel play the role of flounder lap dog to Blackie just a little too well? I mean yeah, I wouldn’t want to get on Blackie’s bad side being the man’s a gorilla that trusts no one, but Mostel seemed a little too comfortable in the role. All in all I enjoyed this film, and I thought it provided a somewhat different and unique spin on a well-established genre…plus I’ve always been a fan of Richard Widmark and would strongly recommend two of his other films from the same period in Night and the City (1950), directed by Jules Dassin, and the one I mentioned earlier Pickup on South Street (1953), directed by Samuel Fuller.

The picture on this DVD is presented in original full frame aspect ratio (1.33:1), and looks very sharp and clean. The audio is available in both Dolby Digital stereo and mono, and comes across very well. In terms of special features, there’s a commentary track by authors and film historians James Ursini and Alain Silver, along with a theatrical trailer and liner notes for the film. There are also trailer for other 20th Century Fox noir films like Call Northside 777 (1948), House of Bamboo (1955), Laura (1944), and The Street with No Name (1948).

Cookieman108

If I learned anything from this film its not to play cards with Jack Palance…he doesn’t like to lose…

This excellent documentary-style noir was superbly directed by the great Elia Kazan, who made great use of actual locations in New Orleans to create a very realistic and believable atmosphere. The cast is nearly flawless, with great performances from Richard Widmark (in a rare good guy role!), Paul Douglas, Barbara Bel Geddes, Zero Mostel, and Jack Palance, in his stunning film debut.

Richard Widmark plays Dr. Clint Reed, a public health doctor who must work with New Orleans Police Captain Tom Warren (played by Paul Douglas) to find the killer(s) of a man who was already dying of the deadly bubonic plague (he was carrying a virulent strain of it). They have only 48 hours to find the killers before they can escape the port area and unknowingly spread the plague throughout the country.

Jack Palance plays the ruthless killer who’s on the run from the police, not knowing that he’s already infected with the plague. Barbara Bel Geddes plays the patient wife of Dr. Reed (Widmark), and Zero Mostel plays the cowardly sidekick of Jack Palance. The memorable music by Alfred Newman only adds to the mood of this entertaining film noir. The dvd has a virtually perfect picture and sound quality, and includes several film noir trailers and an outstanding commentary by film noir authors/historians Alain Silver and James Ursini. Highly recommended for any film noir buff!

This is a must have video for players and composers who have little comprehension of the specific connections between blues and jazz. It contains enough to decipher a jazz tune or build one up from blues, and even to create songs in styles along the blues to jazz continuum.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Don Mock: The Blues From Rock To Jazz! Click Here

Besides chords and their roll in progression style, Don shows scale and arpeggio choices for improvisation over those chords, along with examples of specific licks (some fairly lengthy – oh yeah..). This DVD comes with a PDF file containing note-for-note transcription sheet music with tab and guitar neck diagrams that shows all the examples played on the video, and a few extra extended scale & arpeggio solos.

Don Mock is a great guitarist and teacher (especially in Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz, and Theory). His DVDs, whether his own tutorials or his productions of other players (e.g. Joe Pass), are always worth owning because they are so informative and well balanced between playing specifics and music theory that they are reference tools good for a life time, and should hold their resale value (though I plan to keep mine).

Also see Don’s booklet Guitar Axis Master Class ‘Turnarounds’ with CD, it reveals a great yet manageable way of dealing with turnarounds; and it is another example of Don’s ability to really give you tools and knowledge to quickly get the job done; and it is a perfect companion to ‘The Blues from Rock to Jazz’.

This is a great, simple and well played complete guitar lesson for a jazz guitar student!

Don Mock has a great touch and tempo in playing modern guitar he can sing what he’s playing and what most he can teach with the right feeling and make things very simple to understand and learn.

Quite a good choice !!

Rio Lobo is a good John Wayne western that borrows from several of his previous movies. The story is about a Union colonel trying to find out who the traitor was in his unit that sold information about gold shipments to Confederate guerillas. Along the way he helps a town escape the wrath of a rich landowner and a corrupt sheriff. The story may seem similar, but this still is a very entertaining movie. What John Wayne movie isn’t? The story blends action and story together in this exciting western.

The Duke is great once again as Cord McNally, the Union colonel in pursuit of traitors. Jorge Rivero is awkward as Pierre “Frenchy” Cordona, the Confederate guerilla who helps Wayne. I don’t know whether it is actually Rivero talking or someone dubbing his lines in, but it just sounds funny. Joining them are Jennifer O’Neill, Christopher Mitchum, Jack Elam, and Victor French. Elam is great as usual in his role as the eccentric old man in the town. The DVD has a good widescreen presentation that looks cleaned up compared to the one shown on TBS. Otherwise, there isn’t any extras added on. This was Howard Hawks last western, and he made a good one. Good story and exciting action. Deserves a watch if nothing else for those who haven’t seen this late Duke western!

By 1970, John Wayne had his Oscar in his pocket and Rio Lobo on some inspection looks like just a lot of good, clean fun he and the cast decided to have, with no particular regard for making cinematic history. The plot rambles and has some implausabilities-like why does the Duke, who plays a Yankee, go home to Blackthorne, Texas? And Jorge Rivero as a Confederate officer takes some getting used to. Same thing, different reason, with Jennifer O’Neill. She seems too contemporary for a historic setting and her acting is questionable. However, by dogies, she is just so beautiful (and one of the hottest actresses in demand in the early 70’s) that she can be forgiven for any dramatic failings.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rio Lobo! Click Here

One of the strengths of the film is the Duke’s self-deprecating humor is in fine display, and so is John Wayne himself. Chisum, which was made about this time, is a better film in my estimation, but Mr. Wayne is practically relegated to a supporting player in it. In Rio Lobo he is in almost every scene and that alone makes it a pleasure to watch. Jack Elam hams it up and David Huddleston adds a nice touch of comedy. Trivia buffs will enjoy Sherri Lansing (future studio head) in the near buff and George Plimpton, fresh off his Paper Tiger days, getting a bit role as a short-lived bad guy.

As for improving the movie, it suffers because the death of the lieutenant, which is the main motivating force for Wayne’s character to go after the bad guys, is little seen by the audience. We need to connect with this guy so we feel strongly that justice must be done. This character should have been played by a well-known actor in a cameo role. An obvious choice would have been Patrick Wayne. Then the audience would know the character even though their presence onscreen is brief and make a stronger emotional connection with them. Another thing is the sheriff of Rio Lobo is supposed to be a really mean hombre, but we don’t have enough scenes with him to establish this. At the very least, a scene should be added where he brutally questions the Sherri Lansing character and scars her. It wouldn’t have to be graphic-just enough to once again emotionally connect with the audience.

Mr. Wayne’s DVDs are not getting the attention that his fans deserve! George Plimpton had a television special on making Rio Lobo-this should be an extra included. And, my gosh, The Alamo had 500,000 feet of film shot-some by John Ford. What do we get in bonus material? ZIP! NADA! JACKSQUAT! C’mon Hollywood, this is THE most important film actor of the 20th Century! Get off yer duffs and find this stuff. This is HISTORY!

Although this film was released on home video in the U.S. in 1984 as “Taro the Dragon Boy” (five years after it appeared in Japanese theaters in 1979), not many people seem to remember it, which is a shame, as it is one of the best anime films I’ve ever seen. I rented the English-dubbed version, helmed by the legendary Peter Fernandez (also worked on the English dubs of “Speed Racer” and “Superbook”), on video from my video store on several occasions as a child, and was awestruck. Taro is a remarkable young man – he possesses immense strength and an enormous appetite, but he also has a heart of gold, and the object of his quest is to find his mother, Katsu, who was changed into a dragon many years ago. (One scene which made a big impression on me is the scene in which Taro and the villagers are feasting after Taro defeated a demon who was threatening the village, and Taro – who has an appetite to rival Garfield’s – can’t enjoy the celebration because he keeps thinking of the folks back in his home village who have nothing to eat. That shows what a pure, good heart he has.) This film holds up very well even to this day. The animation is remarkably fluid given that the film is now over a quarter-century old, and the music is also very well-done. There are even vocal songs, which were dubbed into English for the U.S. release along with the dialogue, and they’re also pretty good, even in English; the dialogue is also well-written and well-dubbed. The ending will absolutely have you in tears. If you can find a used copy of this film on VHS, by all means pick it up. It’s a real classic. (Incidentally, despite the Japanese title, “Tatsu no ko Taro,” this animation was NOT produced by Tatsunoko Production, but by Toei Animation, which later became internationally famous for “Dragonball,” “Sailor Moon,” and “One Piece.”)

This was a movie I grew up watching.
I remembered the intense story so much and loved
the animation in comparison to cheesy cartoons that I had
to break down and look for this movie.

It is a animated movie from the early 80’s derived from
an Oriental Fable. A young boy separated from his mother
at birth (she turned into a dragon) He looks to reunite with
his mother and learns to help people along his journey.

He makes many friends and each event somehow ties into the
next part of his journey. Its story is very touching.

Anyhow, the moral of the story is: You can help yourself by helping others. (A sound piece of business advice I might add)

First off, if I could give this miniseries 10, 20, a zillion stars, I would. Amazon just didn’t let me count high enough.

So let me get ahold of myself long enough to tell you to run, run, run and get this DVD set now, if you haven’t already. “From the Earth to the Moon” is one of the most unique and engrossing (as well as gorgeously produced) miniseries I’ve ever seen — 12 hours of moving, dramatic, gripping, frightening, and ultimately completely inspiring entertainment. As a kid born in the late sixties, I missed the moon race (and I’m still ticked about it). But this literally perfect 12-episode miniseries makes me feel as if I’ve been there too — from the tragedy of Apollo 1 to the triumphs and near-misses of the ensuing missions, to the vastly underappreciated final Apollo 16 and 17 missions. (As one character in the film laments, “We stopped going up just when we were getting really good at it.”)

Those of you who might have avoided this because it’s “history” — let me reassure you right now that it’s as gripping as any drama you’ll see in or out of a theatre. This isn’t just history painstakingly created by some of those who were there — it’s also just plain incredible, suspenseful, joyful entertainment.

And for those of you who saw it on HBO, the DVD set is well worth the price, even if you’d already taped it. The DVD set offers not only crystal-clear viewing you’d expect (and the special effects hold up admirably under the discerning eye offered through DVD), but also special features including an enjoyable making-of featurette (emphasizing Tom Hanks’ huge role in bringing the project to the screen), plus behind-the-scenes studies of special effects, 3D ship models (which can be rotated or even viewed in wireframe), a transcript of Kennedy’s “We Choose to go to the Moon” speech, a follow-up quiz, and a virtual tour of the solar system. And that’s just for starters.

The writing, acting, music, direction and more are all simply superb — each hour out of the twelve having its own particular look and feel, while nevertheless meshing perfectly with the others. The introductions to each chapter in Apollo history are delivered quietly, but with eloquence and power, by the project’s producer, co-writer, actor (and driving force) Tom Hanks.

One of my favorite aspects of the project was the way it brought in so many actors who are often underused (or at least under-appreciated) in TV and film today — many of whom are cast against type to show what they can really do. Stephen Root, a guy I’d loved as Jimmy James on NewsRadio for years, does a terrific job in a serious role as Mission Control’s Chris Kraft, as does Nick Searcy in a quiet and often sensitive turn as the program’s father figure Deke Slayton. Meanwhile, Stephen Root’s former NewsRadio news director Dave Foley also gets in on the action, and gets to shed his “Kids in the Hall” cynicism with a surprisingly sweet and innocent portrayal of Al Bean.

Other favorites out of the dozens of amazing actors include Ted Levine’s wistful, complex (not to mention curmudgeonly) Alan Shepard, the criminally underused Jo Anderson’s sensitive and moving Pat White (wife of Gemini and Apollo I astronaut Ed White), and memorable appearances large and small by such gifted folks as Kevin Pollak, Elizabeth Perkins, Matt Craven, Tim Daly, Mark Harmon (returning for a few moments to his lighter roots), Paul McCrane, David Clennon, James Rebhorn, Mark Rolston, Jay Mohr, George Newbern, Brett Cullen and Steve Zahn.

The surprises are the best part. Before viewing this, I would never have guessed that the Apollo 13 (”We interrupt this Program”) segment, while unique and powerful, would be my least favorite of the group, while “Spider,” a look at the development of a *machine*, for goodness’ sake, would move me to tears. Other standouts (keeping in mind that they’re all terrific) include a quietly powerful look at Apollo I, the trials and surprising fates of the astronauts’ wives in an episode directed by Sally Field, and the bittersweet old-man-as-underdog battle of Alan Shepard to make it “up there” one last time — and for more than 15 minutes.

OK, I’ll shut up. But if you ever have a day when you’ve encountered a really stupid driver, or been detained in ridiculous meetings with half-brained bozos, or wondered if human beings aren’t actually DE-volving — then this miniseries is just the kind of thing to remind you of what human beings can be at their very best. And what wonders they are capable of.

And I can’t believe I missed it all. We just better go back. Darn it.

NOTE: For those of you inspired by the miniseries, I strongly urge you to go pick up Andrew Chaikin’s wonderful “A Man on the Moon,” the history of Apollo that provided much of the backbone for the miniseries. And for an even closer look at the moon, don’t miss “Full Moon” (Michael Light and Andrew Chaikin) — a truly stunning, beautiful, even eerie compilation of lunar photographs, many of which had never before been seen.

I don’t intend to review the content of this DVD set as it has been covered in great detail by many hundreds already. If you love top-class historical drama and enjoyed Apollo 13, you probably know about the quality of this miniseries already. My rating for the miniseries itself is 9.5 out of 10.

This is a short review to point out the differences between the 2000 4-Disc box set and the 2005 Signature Edition 5-disc box set.

Buy,Download, Or Stream From the Earth to the Moon – The Signature Edition! Click Here

In case you have already got the 2000 DVD set in your collection and are wondering whether to update it to the 2005 edition, here are the differences:

Firstly, there are 5 discs instead of 4, but NO difference in content. No extra scenes, documentaries or commentary. The original DVD-Rom Disc 4 has been re-authored to play on your DVD player in the lounge room. This makes a lot of the content immediately accessible instead of having to search for it on the net, but the interactivity is gone. For me that’s small loss as I didn’t get much out of the games etc anyway.

Secondly, the entire set has been remastered in DTS and Widescreen (1.85:1). Now this sounds like manna from heaven, but unfortunately only the audio remastering is really worth spending any extra dollars on. The sound is crisp, clear and beautifully mixed and the liftoffs etc come booming out of your home theatre system like you were there at the Cape.

But the widescreen – well, sadly it just doesn’t enhance the original viewing experience. It’s evident that HBO produced the original series in 1.33:1 for tv and have merely re-jigged and adapted that ratio for the modern proliferation of widescreen plasma television sets. There is no extra data. You will find some scenes are better cut in the frame, but others suffer. For example, in Disc 1, when the Gemini 8/Agena assembly is tumbling around the sky with a stuck thruster, you don’t see the thruster in the new widescreen version as it is cut off by the top of the frame. Some captions have also been compromised.

As the series was created for the 1.33:1 ratio, all the crucial information is positioned inside the frame for that ratio anyway. The only advantage of the widescreen ratio is that it now fits your new plasma widescreen without the black bars. Also the video quality is not as crisp as I expected it to be, possibly from the re-sizing process.

Each chapter now gets its own play and audio options menu and there are 3 chapters per disc, which is tidier. However there are still those weird groupings of episodes where some contain the titles and some don’t. Nothing has changed here.

The box looks impressive with the silver signature cover and Tom’s moniker on it and there is a nice holo of the Earth and the Moon which alternates as you tilt it this way and that.

But, in a major disappointment to this buyer, the original cardboard foldout format is identical to its 2000 counterpart. My box broke apart after about a year due to excessive wear and tear and sadly I fear this box will succumb to the same fate. Two of my discs had already broken free from their moorings in transit and were sliding all round the inside of the box, picking up scratches and marks in the process. Poor packaging.

How I wish they’d used the Battlestar Galactica Season 1 format where all discs sit securely in plastic pages like the leaves of a book. Sturdier, simpler and more durable.

In summary, if you don’t have From the Earth to the Moon, then buy this 2005 set. If you have it already and are wondering whether to spend $100 on a better version, think twice. You may think it’s worth it to get better sound, but unless you are an audiophile with a top home theater surround system and DTS, you probably won’t notice. You may be better off spending your money on other titles.
