A nice upgrade from the 4-disc Billy Jack Collection. The major improvement here is that all 4 films have been digitally remastered in their original widescreen aspect ratio from the original film negatives. The color and the clarity look superb with very little artifacts. Though I just got this set and haven’t watched each film in their entirety, I did sample the beginning of each disc and was amazed at how breathtaking and clear the opening scenes were for both “Billy Jack” and “Trial.” The transfers for “Born Losers” and “Washington” look just as fantastic. These really make the transfers on the last set look inferior, especially since I played them back to back and did a comparison.

The sound has also been digitally remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. and each film includes both a newly recorded 2005 commentary track from the Laughlin family as well as the original 2000 filmmaker commetary from the last set. The discs come in a slipcase with digipak and each disc has it’s own tray with the original poster art for each film beneath the tray and printed on the actual disc. The running times for each are “Born Losers” (113 minutes); “Billy Jack” (118 minutes); “Trial…” (171 minutes); “Washington” (114 minutes).

The set also includes a 5th disc of bonus features. Unfortunately it’s not as good as I would’ve hoped, but I’m not complaining since I’m so impressed with the transfers of the actual films themselves. The bonus features included a very short documentary about the making of the films; Trivia Quiz; several original TV ad for ‘Billy Jack” only; Billy Jack Book Excerpt; Cut-Your-Own Fight contest info; Website info; and a photo gallery. Nothing too impressive.

Overall the transfers themselves are widescreens and look and sound amazing, enough for me to say that alone is worth the upgrade.

I have always been puzzled by the hostile reaction of critics to Billy Jack. The puzzling aspect is not the negativity itself, but rather the almost blanket misrepresentation or – to be charitable – misunderstanding, of what the movie is about. Thus potential buyers are disserviced by the prevailing conventional wisdom i.e. “Billy Jack preaches peace while practising violence”; “Billy Jack wants to have its cake and eat it with regard to pacifism”; “the film is hypocritical” etc. In reality, the character of Billy Jack NEVER preaches peace. The only hint of this being true comes when he REJECTS Delores Taylor’s view that violence in the face of violent bigotry won’t solve anything. Given his instincts as a Shoshone warrior and a Green Beret trained (ironically by the US government) for war – against the extent of brutality of the bigots he faces, there is clearly no room for touchy-feely encounter sessions. These morons are not merely exercising speech, thought or association, but systematic physical violence on the defenceless. So Billy Jack’s struggle to reconcile his violent rage with the principles of the Freedom School is a lost cause from the outset(which Billy himself admits when – referring to his efforts to embrace the pacifist influence of the Freedom School – he says to a racist bully, “I try, I really try … but when I see this girl of such a beautiful spirit suffer this indignity … I just go BERSERK! “) To critics safely weaned on the quiet, unthreatening dignity of Sidney Poitier, the Billy Jack character threatened equivalent response to oppression that cared neither for the approval, feelings or physical well-being of knowing oppressors. Revolutionary indeed! And while Virgil Tibbs would soak it up, confident his own intellectual superiority will bring justice in the end, Billy Jack will not give an inch of ground to people who had already stolen enough. Result: the bigots NEVER mess with HIM in the first instance – always someone weaker. Yet, it is precisely here that the movie parts company with the character in terms of point-of-view. For while Billy is clear in cause and action, the movie is purposefully less so. In the end, Billy’s actions result in his arrest. Whether the actual benefits of his actions (guarantee of the Freedom School’s existence; annual gubernatorial progress review of Indian affairs etc.) have been worth the cost or have, in reality, made any real difference to the overall mileu of oppression is left debatable. NOT because the movie “has its cake and eats it”, but because there are no glib, easy answers by which to provide neat resolutions. Should Billy be praised, condemned or something in-between? The movie honestly doesn’t know and sensibly leaves this to the viewer to decide. Coming from a society where the issue of defensive violence in the face of apartheid brutality was always an ongoing anxiety, the movie’s delineation of contradictory but related progressive tendencies did not ring false at all. In fact, its pioneering depiction (try and dispute that!) of race conflict from the point of view of the oppressed was deemed so incendiary by the apartheid government that it was banned (along with Soldier Blue and Jesus Christ Superstar). Yet, even here South of the equator, Billy Jack was a movie phenomenon in the 1970s, as we attended secret underground viewings with our parents – one eye on the lookout for security police raids. Check out the initial, aloof response of US critics at the time and you’ll also see life imitating art in ironic ways as critics retreated into their smug class and race cocoons in an effort to bury Billy Jack. Yet today, given its box office numbers and its massive international impact, Billy Jack ranks as the best example of the intermittent disjuncture between film critics and the movie-going public. Billy Jack may seem naive now – and the experimental theatre scenes now suggest Zanuck may have been right (for the wrong reasons) to want them excluded – but its nobility is untainted. Forget the sour mumblings of mainstream critics (the same people who proclaimed True Lies “a quality movie”)and make this great movie a part of your collection. As a straight action movie, you’d be hard-pressed to find better contemporaries (yes, Billy Jack may have dated somewhat but has anyone checked out Bullitt or The French Connection recently?). As an action movie with some things on its mind other than fast cars, big explosions and blonde babes, I defy anyone to find me an equal. In any case, the title song (”One Tin Soldier”) by Coven is in and of itself worth the unbelievable DVD purchase price. From its spectacular Mustang-rustling opening sequence to Billy’s final surrender, Billy Jack remains one of the best examples of independent movie-making at its most threatening to the Establishment. Today, only John Sayles and Ken Loach can still lay claim to that honor. I had been looking for copies of Billy Jack and Born Losers (the orginal Billy Jack movie) for almost 15 years before discovering it for sale on this site. Since receiving my shipment, I have watched them repeatedly and not been disappointed. Neither will you.

The first 15 minutes of ‘Mindbender’ had the makings of a great Ken Russell film: some excellent incendiary imagery suggested he had found a spiritual home on American cable tv and although the rest of the film was interestingly (and beautifully) shot; it ultimately failed because of a poor script – and even more tellingly – the lunatic premise that anyone would be interested in Uri Geller’s life story.

It did suggest however, that Russell had lost none of his unique visionary flair and a decent story would see him firing up to something resembling full power again.

Unfortunately, ‘Dogboys’ isn’t it.

It’s a bog-standard, escape-from-mad-inmates-and-even-madder warder, tale with the added ‘twist’ of carnivorous killer canines.

Sort of ‘Lock Up’ with Alsatians.

It has a few good points: Bryan Brown is good as the said loonie locker, and there is the odd Russellian flourish, but it looks like this material defeated even the resolute and ever-reliable Russell and you depressingly get the sense he just plonked his camera, shouted “action”, then went for a drink.

Dean Cain is the ‘hero’ and he isn’t brilliant. He’s so wooden that when he escapes into the forest – he disappears!

No need to run Dean, they’ll NEVER spot you in there son.

Elsewhere, Tia Carrere scrubs up fab, but has a decidedly “What I am doing here” look on her face as she tries to make the best of her desperately underwritten role.

The rest of the cast stumble around bewildered, waiting for their bloody and violent death scenes, each one more yawningly predictable than the last, and it’ll come as no surprise that there’s a Cain/Brown climax which reaches no excitement heights at all.

A heartbreaking waste of all the varying talents involved.

It hurts me to have to give a KR film a lousy notice but what can I do? If I had the money I’d give it to him; to fund one of his long standing cherished projects or just to finance the long-awaited restoration of ‘the Devils’ now all the missing footage has been recovered.

But these are dreams.

We long for the day Ken Russell is back up in his beloved Lakes, helming a decently budgeted, brilliantly cast British project; with nuns, vampires, stoned 19th Century composers, Nazi’s, nymphomaniacs, funeral pyres and ripe, profane dialogue all in the first 10 minutes (he could EASY do it!). Dreaming again.

But for now ‘Dogboys’ and the sad fact that it doesn’t much bark, never mind bite.

Pretty average movie. Little known which is why I bought it. To have a look. I know now why it’s little known. Weak story. Give it a miss.

My daughter hasn’t stopped watching the DVD since she got them. Came in good condition and in a timely manner.

After watching this cartoon on TV, my son wanted a dinosaur themed party for his 4th birthday. We ordered this DVD online from Amazon and the delivery was excellent. The product was excellent as well.

We did have a dinosaur themed birthday party and played this cartoon for kids to watch. Everyone enjoyed it! He still watches it even now.

It is about 3 kids who are part of the D-Team, discover that dinosaurs are still present in the world and they venture our to save them from the evil Alpha gang. The DVD is split up into small episodes. So it is nice for little kids who can watch short cartoons instead of a long movie.

This film is worth seeing if only for Bjorn Juhl and David Main’s apprearances. Actually the whole cast of characters are extremely interesting, I enjoyed it. I thought it would be the history of the fuzz pedal and chronicle it’s existance from the 1st Gibson fuzztone through the tonebenders, fuzzfaces, big muff’s ETC, but what really takes place is a seemingly random sequence of interviews with pedalmakers and players. I’m glad someone made this film and that I bought it.

This is a fun and entertaining movie about guitar effects pedals though mostly FUZZ boxes. While I do really like the movie and have watched it several time it suffers greatly from poor editing and planning. It would have been better to have interviews of the participants followed by demonstrations of his products. It really would have been nice if there was a bonus clip where they showed all the pedal demos one after another.

From the standpoint of history, artistic license abounds in this classic adventure movie. In fairness, the filmmaker posts a disclaimer of the historical veracity of the film right at the beginning. Errol Flynn is at his flamboyant best as dashing English officer, Geofrrey Vickers. He vies with his brother (Patrick Knowles) for the love of Olivia DeHavilland. Romantic sublplots aside, Flynn and an army of supporting actors hold the thin red line of 19th century British imperialism. C. Henry Gordon is evilly conniving as Surat Khan, leader of the fictional Suristan faction. When England cuts off his money, Surat Khan wages war against the British interlopers. After Surat Khan massacres non-combatants at the garrison of Chokoti (sp.?), India is too hot to hold him. In typical Hollywood fashion, the action shifts to the Crimea at Sebastopol where the British face the Russians at Balaklava Heights. As an inside joke, the Russian commander bears an uncanny resemblance to Joseph Stalin. Who should be collaborating with the Russians but Surat Khan? Vickers, still burning with anger over the massacre of innocents, discovers this and he forges orders for the Light Brigade to attack. Under the direction of Michael Curtiz, the slam-bang action sequences of this movie provide memorable thrills. The fighting at Chokoti is both exciting and unsettling as women and children fall before rebel bullets. The staging of the charge is impressive, if controversial. Many of the horses were destroyed because of injuries from the deliberate tripping. As the lancers charge into the face of roaring canon, to the right of them, to the left of them, in front of them, quotes from Tennyson’s poem appear on screen. The shot of the fallen lancer still holding aloft the billowing Union Jack in his lifeless hand is great imagery. “When can their glory fade?” Filmed in glorious B&W, this classic action/adventure film is a good example of the quality product of the Warner Brothers film sutdio at its Depression Era height. Enjoy the old fashioned fun.

Here we have one of the ten best Hollywood adventure, historical (with the normal Hollywood bending of the facts) romances of all time. A movie that all later adventure movies, like the Indiana Jones series, owe a dept to and yet you can not find it or ‘Gunga Din’ or ‘The Sea Hawk’etc. on DVD. Every junky movie that lasted only a week in theaters in the past ten years you can find on DVD but hardly any of the CLASSICS from the 30’s or 40’s. When will Hollywood wake up?

I would like to recommend this movie to anyone who knows what it is to sit through 20 sequential showings of the same film because of a 5-year-old’s obsession. This movie is the only one that none of us mind seeing over and over again. The story is genuinely funny and moving (Big Bird is taken away from Sesame Street and adopted by Dodos) and wants to go home. Meanwhile, the folks on Sesame Street are trying to find him to bring him home. And finally, a very funny couple of “Sleaze Brothers” have kidnapped him to turn him into the Blue Bird of Happiness for their 10-rate carnival. This is very well done and performed with genuine love by a very talented set of actors. See it — enjoy!

I loved this movie as a kid and still enjoy it even today! I remember watching this movie with my Mom and Dad and we all loved it!

The movie is geared towards children, but I can honestly say that adults will love it, too! There’s a lot of funny moments in this video that my younger sisters and I still love! (And we’re all older)!

For instance, the Dodo family that Big Bird goes to stay with say some hilarious things, such as, “You’ve got to come home before you can leave”, and the two men who try to find Big Bird for their fun fare are really funny, too! They kind of remind me of the two villians in 101 dalmations because one comes up with all the ideas and the other one sort of follows along.

Kids who love Big Bird will love this movie! Big Bird, Snuffy, the count, Oscar, Bert and Ernie, Cookie, and many other memorable characters, including Bob, Maria, Linda, and Gordon come together in this delightful movie! Ernie and Bert make me laugh in this film, especially since Ernie is up to his old tricks by bugging Bert in this movie! I love how he tries to get him to fly an airplane! The songs are great, too, and it’s truly a winner for the whole family!

First of all, “Around the World in 80 Days” is one of the best of the 1950-1960’s grand epics. It may not have the character depth of Giant or the scale of The Ten Commandments, but it’s still one heck of a fun movie.

Mike Todd set out to make 3 hours of crowd-pleasing entertainment and he reached his goal, ten-fold (literally… the $6,000,000 film earned over 4 times its cost at the box office). The cast is wonderful (it’s definately Cantinflas’ show, though) and the Oscar winning cinematography is breathtaking. Also, one of the best musical scores (also an Oscar winner) and a witty screenplay (Oscar winner) make it a real joy to see.

Sadly, for the last 18 years, the only version on home video has been a pan & scan one. “80 Days” was shot in the Todd-AO 70mm format, so the crisp, ultra-detailed, and wide image is totally mangled in that format. It doesn’t help that the P&S tape also used a mono track rather than the full stereophonic surround sound that Todd-AO (and even many general release 35mm prints) offered.

Warner Home Video’s DVD of the film is nothing short of a triumph. The film’s original negative has been in awful condition since the 1950’s (not Warner’s fault, mind you), thus making a watchable print is more or less impossible. Thankfully, Warner has remastered “80 Days” from scratch. The result is a stunning 2.20:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, with the Todd-AO mix adapted to Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbs, too!) While the image occasionally has gooey splices and some specks on the image, the film has a level of crispness and color vibrancy that rivals 1940’s Technicolor films. The 5.1 track is wonderful and keeps a lot of the directional sound of 6-track magnetic sound from 70mm presentation.

What is really amazing is that Warner managed to make one of the most perfect digital transfers of a film, ever. Not one hint of edge enhancement pops up, no pixelation, no macroblocking. While the film source isn’t perfect, Warner didn’t add any sort of imperfections when adapting the 65mm film to NTSC video. The switch to 448 kbs (Warner usually uses a lower bitrate for 5.1 audio) gives the audio a certain warmth that is in line with the ultra-high fidelity of 6-track mag sound.

The extras are great, too. The Robert Osborne intros, outtakes, Brian Sibley commentary, original “Trip to the Moon” short, and roadshow program book (on DVD-ROM) makes this an excellent presentation of a Best Picture Oscar winner.

Whether you’re collecting the Best Picture winners, a fan of the classic 1950’s epics, or just looking for a fun movie to watch, Around the World in 80 Days is worth a purchase. “80 Days” hasn’t lost its luster due to age, it’s because of poor presentation. Now that Warner Bros. has released the film in widescreen, people can now discover what is one of the most underrated and neglected films.

This Todd-AO wide-wide-wide screen production earned many accolades when it was released and, although it may be a bit tame by today’s standards, it should be placed on a DVD in its original WIDESCREEN Todd-AO format to get the full effect of its scenic and comic wonders. David Niven, a very young and beautiful Shirley MacLaine, Robert Newton and Cantinflas head a HUGE cast of movie stars playing all sorts of cameo surprise roles throughout, many of whom will probably not be recognized by today’s generation but who should be remembered nevertheless. The great Victor Young score is magnificent and GREAT names show up all through this movie: Buster Keaton, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra, Cesar Romero, and over 40 other stars light up this adventure, which really works best in its widescreen presentation. Why this great family film has not been given the DVD treatment is a mystery to me. Let’s hope this error in judgment will be corrected soon and a pristine widescreen DVD will be forthcoming of this truly delightful movie.

The immortals of the screen’s golden era transcend time because each of the true greats was an orginal. Unique. Incomparable. Gable, Garland, Garbo, Davis, Bogart, Cagney, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy…no one was like them before, or ever will be again. The same can surely be said about the wonderful Errol Flynn.

Warner Bros. has been quite generous in delivering us many Flynn titles in recent years, and there are dozens to go! This latest set will not dissapoint his fans, with 5 entertaining, classic vehicles, assembled in an impressive newly designed sleeve that takes the WB Signature Collection series to a higher plane of elegance and magnetism.

Every film here is top-drawer, but my particular favorite has to be CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE. An undeniable classic which has never looked so good. All the transfers here are the best I’ve ever seen, and the vintage extras Warner has included are like the cherry on top of the sundae.

I’m sure WB has another 2 or 3 Flynn sets waiting in the wings…and why not. He made several dozen films for the studio, and only a handful don’t classify as timeless entertainment.

While every Errol Flynn fan has individual titles they will champion as ‘Essential’ Flynn, “The Errol Flynn Signature Collection, Vol. 2″, combined with the first volume, offers a pretty complete collection of the premier screen cavalier’s most memorable screen appearances…and two of the films in this collection (”The Charge of the Light Brigade” and “The Adventures of Don Juan”), are absolute MUSTS!

“The Charge of the Light Brigade” (1936): Flynn’s follow-up to “Captain Blood” is a tour-de-force of adventure, romance, and spectacle, climaxing in, arguably, the greatest (and bloodiest) cavalry charge in screen history! More Rudyard Kipling than Tennyson, most of the story occurs in India, with noble Flynn saving the life of a genocide-minded tyrant, losing Olivia de Havilland (for once!) to future ‘Will Scarlet’ Patric Knowles, and chumming with doomed best friend (both on and off screen), David Niven. Eventually the action moves to the Crimea, and the infamous Charge, an astonishing spectacle that, sadly, cost the lives of at least one stunt man, and hundreds of horses (Flynn, himself, would be so distraught by the carnage that he helped establish the present standards against animal cruelty).

Unforgettable!

“The Adventures of Don Juan” (1948): Warner’s attempt to resuscitate Flynn’s sagging career failed, but the film is an absolutely enchanting, tongue-in-cheek swashbuckler many consider his last ‘great’ film! Looking a bit worn (he fell off the wagon early in the production, which ended up taking nearly a year to complete), Flynn is the immortal roué, too often caught during trysts (a familiar real-life dilemma for Flynn!). Returned to Spain in disgrace, accompanied by loyal Alan Hale (in the last of his 12 films with Errol), he eventually wins the heart of the Queen, foils a plot to overthrow the monarchy, and fights a furious duel with villain Robert Douglas, all to one of the GREATEST of Max Steiner’s scores!

A real TREAT!

Two other films of the collection are also great Flynn; “The Dawn Patrol” (1938) re-teams Flynn with David Niven and Basil Rathbone (a VERY sympathetic ‘villain’, this time!), in one of the BEST WWI dramas, of burnt-out fliers pushed to their limits; “Gentleman Jim” (1942), one of Flynn’s own personal favorites, is a funny, light-hearted biopic of boxer James J. Corbett, father of ‘modern’ boxing, with fabulous turns by Alan Hale (as Flynn’s FATHER!), and Ward Bond (unforgettable as the aging John L. Sullivan).

The only (slight) disappointment is “Dive Bomber” (1941), in the collection, I suspect, because it was filmed in color! A dated tale of the Navy’s research into the effects of high altitude flying on pilots, the film boasts a first-rate cast (including Fred MacMurray and Ralph Bellamy), and Flynn at his most handsome, but it lacks the charm and excitement of the other titles…Still, this isn’t a bad film!

Happily, Flynn is BACK…and with his five WWII-themed films still to be released, perhaps a Flynn ‘War’ collection will be next!

I’ve seen a couple of the Land Before Time movies in years past. I don’t have children so I’ve never purchased one… until now. I watched part of the “Great Day” at a friend’s home. It was wonderful!

I enjoyed seeing how the real-life challenges were overcome, e.g., Sera’s dealing w/ the new one. The youngster I was watching with wanted to go to to the beginning (since you can’t rewind a DVD). Inside I was “up in arms” because I wanted to see the entire movie. So I decided I needed to buy my own copy. And I’ll share it w/ some other young ones… & not-so-young… because it’s a beautiful story.

The day this movie came out I walked fifteen minutes to the store and back just to get it. And it was definitely worth it. I can’t stop watching it. I am a total Land Before Time fan, with every single volume (including the sing along videos) and I have to say this is one of the best ones. Guido is hilarious and adorable. I was disappointed that Pterano didn’t come back though. Even my sister, who never really liked that character, was wondering why he wasn’t in this movie.(I really hope he comes back while I’m still young.) The songs are a work of genius, especially Flip, Flap & Fly. In my opinion it’s the best Land Before Time song written. The beat is really fun and uplifting. This movie is definitely worth adding to your collection!

I am soooooooo happy that this is now in the states, anyone who watches this will fall in love with Shaun! Great for all ages, from my 2 year old to my husband and my parents! It’s a hit!

If “Chicken Run” was “The Great Escape”, then Shaun the Sheep is “Hogan’s Heroes.” Sean is Col. Hogan, the dog is Schultz… and the farmer is Col. Klink. Completely charming.
