Eric Roberts has been toiling away on the straight-to-video shelf for far too long, as he proves so well in La Cucaracha, a sunbaked Western noir set in Santiago, Mexico. He plays a perpetually soused would-be author escaping an imagined past of murder and mayhem, writing letters in his head that he’ll never send and pondering the novel he’ll never write. Roused from his inebriation by an epigram-spouting American, he’s haplessly enlisted to assassinate a killer for a local drug lord (Joaquim de Almeida). Damned if he does and doomed if he doesn’t, he miraculously survives and crawls from a shallow grave: “If I didn’t have such a good survival instinct I would have killed myself long ago.” Crippled but spurred by his newfound raison d’etre–revenge!–he celebrates his self-discovery by munching defiantly on a cockroach. But not the cockroach of the title. That honor goes to Roberts, a scurrying little survivor who scuttles along desert roads in his beat-up wheelchair.

The picture tries too hard to strike a deadpan vein of dark humor and too often lets itself get lost in unnecessary details and side alleys, but the world of adobe buildings and dusty streets is like a film noir by Sergio Leone, full of blood-red sunsets and humid nights. Roberts always strikes the right balance of determination, desperation, and futility, never really winning but, like the cockroach, managing to survive underfoot. –Sean Axmaker

As always, Brooks (as writer, director, and star) presents a timely comedic premise that’s ripe with possibilities, and he capitalizes on his ideas with witty one-liners, hilarious expressions, and comedic situations that are patently absurd and yet, in Brooks’ hands, amusingly believable. At a time of great fear and turmoil in the Middle East, Brooks plays a barely-fictional version of himself (a respected comedian named Albert Brooks) and dares to ask, “what’s considered funny in the world of Islam?” That’s what the State Department wants to know (in the President’s effort to improve U.S.-Muslim relations), so they dispatch Brooks to India and Pakistan to write a 500-page report on what makes Muslims laugh. That he never really finds an answer is beside the point, because Looking for Comedy is more about the nature of comedy itself–specifically, the nature of Albert Brooks’ comedy, which is self-deprecating, low-key, and so idiosyncratic that it defies mainstream expectations. After a brilliant opening, Looking for Comedy loses some of its momentum, but it’s filled with brilliant bits and throwaway gags that keep you smiling from start to finish. There are enjoyable sequnces of Murphy’s Prince Akeem applying his lordly manner to his new job in a fast-food emporium, and falling for the boss’s spirited daughter (Shari Headley), who teaches him how to party down, American style. But the fish-out-water premise is never fully exploited. Star spotters will have a field day locating Cuba Gooding Jr., Donna Summer, Louie Anderson, Vondie Curtis Hall, E.R.’s Eriq La Salle, and Samul L.
