Christmas unprejudiced isn’t Christmas unless you gape at least one version of A Christmas Carol, and this is by far my well-liked. George C. Scott gives one of the greatest performances I have ever seen an actor give; he truly becomes Ebenezer Scrooge to the fullest degree possible. Scott can say more with impartial the slightest hint of a facial movement than many actors can say during the course of an entire movie. All of the performers here are sterling, bringing to life adored characters such as Bob Cratchit, Slight Tim, and Scrooge’s nephew Fred. All four spirits are much, none more so than Scrooge’s ancient partner Jacob Marley; having Marley’s jaw plunge after untying the burial cloth holding his mouth closed is an primary aspect of the myth and certainly does execute an impression on the viewer. This is objective one example of the moviemakers’ faithfulness to Charles Dickens’ unusual story; another would be the inclusion of the two downhearted children, Ignorance and Want, beneath the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Show.

This timeless sage works extremely well on its fill, but the unsurpassed acting skills of Scott gain it almost more than valid. The change wrought in him during the course of the night, as he changes from a man of crass materialism and unkindness to a repentant soul pleading for a chance to change his ways, is powerfully presented and really touches the viewer emotionally. The simple happiness revealed in the lives of Bob Cratchit and others are as heart-warming as the forgotten mistakes and anxiety of a younger Scrooge are agonizing. If there is any heart out there that is not touched by the goodness and courage of Little Tim, I don’t even want to know about it. No matter how many times you eye this movie, it proves itself trustworthy of bringing a dash to your scrutinize, a lump in your throat, and ultimately the very spirit of factual holiday cheer and Christian charity that Dickens intended it to divulge.

I cannot say I have seen every adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but I really cannot absorb any other version could exceed the quality and emotional impact of this one. No matter how many times I read the record or witness the movie, it remains a source of eternal joy to me. This is more than a movie for me; it is an indispensable and primary fragment of each and every Christmas holiday season.

George C. Scott makes an outstanding Scrooge in this 1984 TV production of the Christmas classic. The yarn is once again told of a miser, gloomy and alone. He shuns Christmas and helping others, only doing things that will increase his personal wealth. But then one fateful Christmas Eve, he’s visited by four spirits who try to prove him another method. Will it be enough to redeem him?

I esteem this record, usually enjoying it in a couple forms over the course of December. This particular film version is my common. Probably helps that I’ve watched it almost every year since it came out. The acting is estimable, especially from Scott. The costumes, scenery, and effects are unbelievable as well, and they stick very cessation to the modern fable. Honest watching a few minutes, I catch… in and want to leer the whole thing all over again.

This DVD is the perfect method to study the film. The report and sound are remarkably distinct for an almost 20 year archaic made for TV film. Definitely better then my mature recorded from TV tape. The film is presented in its recent ratio – stout frame. While it would have been nice to have an extra or two, the quality of the movie makes up for this absence in my conception.

If you’re looking for a film version of this classic legend for the holidays, perceive no further. This movie is clear to become a tradition in your family.

I only discovered this movie about four years ago but have watched it every Christmas since. To me it’s the best version of the Christmas Carol ever made, and now it gets the best treatment you could have ever hoped for. This two disc collector’s edition contains two different versions of this movie. First is the colorized version, but then the second is the loyal treat. They went succor to the current prints of this and worked from there. After carefully removing the skips, scratches, and jerky frames, they digitally restored the movie to a version that looks as if it were made yesterday! The sound has been changed to 5.1 digital surround, and there’s even a widescreen version for 16:9 televisions.

The special features include an earlier version of Christmas Carol (not as grand as this one), as well as several featurettes on the movie, interviews with the stars, a feature on Alistair Sim, and others.

You can shriek the distributor build a lot of concern into this restoration and it shows. I wish they’d do the same for other expansive films like “It’s a Incredible Life” and “The Bishop’s Wife”.

Highly recommended as the best version of this classic you’ll acquire anywhere.

Although this 1951 classic film takes some liberties with the Dicken’s fresh, it remains the film most faithful to the modern yarn. Some of the sets and costumes were directly inspired by the memorable illustrations in the first edition of the book. Alastair Sim is very convincing as the miserly Scrooge who, after a horrid night of ghostly visits, is transformed into a man who knows how to retain Christmas in his heart.

There have been many DVD editions of this holiday common in current years, several of them from VCI Entertainment. In this package, VCI has included some things featured on previous releases (commentary, Dickens biography, etc.), but the right star of this situation is the beautifully restored version of the sunless and white film. According to a short feature on the restoration of the film, VCI has finally been able to salvage film elements from the fresh master. Apparently they didn’t have access to a complete master, so they customary several of the best prints they could score and digitally read them to choose which frames were the best available. The rest was cleaned up by hand. It sounds like a labor of cherish, and the result is visible on the shroud. The restored print is available in 4×3 and 16×9 in 1:37:1 format. (According to the Amazon product description page, the aspect ratio is given as 1:87 and elsewhere as 1:33, the DVD box says 1:37.) There are a few seconds of less than pristine audio, but overall this is a radiant pains.

A nice touch I’ve never seen on a DVD before is an optional audio track for the blind, in which a narrator describes the action on the cover pausing for dialog from the actors. A wandering commentary track with Marcus Heard and George Cole (young Scrooge) is included. Great of the commentary is reprised in a feature interview by Heard in which Cole reminisces about Alastair Sim, “Spirit of Christmas Past.” The audio is in English only. Subtitles are in English or Spanish.

The second disc offers the fresh 1935 Seymour Hicks’ film version of the yarn. A colorized version of the 1951 film is also included on Disc 2; the brief introduction by Patrick McNee (young Marley) has been seen before on previous releases of the colorized version. There are also theatrical trailers from the UK release (”Scrooge”) and the US release (”A Christmas Carol”) .

VCI has given us a lovely package here. They’ve done a expansive job with the restoration of a film savor. Many viewers will never have seen such a top-notch print of this holiday common before. The bonus features are a nice inclusion, but the restoration is the true reason to glean this edition. Highly recommended!
