Because of critics’ reaction to Alice in Wonderland in 1951, it is written, Walt Disney actually apologized for the movie and soon after his television show became a hit a few years later, he showed it in its entirety on TV, thus relegating it to his “minor film” category. The movie has never been able to shake this image, and that is a shame. We should remember that “Wizard of Oz” wasn’t a giant box office hit in 1939, and only after it was made an annual event on television did it become a classic in the eyes of the public. “Alice in Wonderland” deserves far more attention than it has ever received. The characters are wonderful. The music is humable, even singable. It’s a short film that takes the viewer into a dreamland, and Disney’s animated version stands up against any of the other live versions that have popped up over the years. It’s time to give this movie the credit it deserves as a classic in animation. Watch it from a child’s point of view, with the amazing images of a cat that disappears, talking cards, and Alice constantly growing and shrinking. And then enjoy it as an adult for the dream world into which we are all swept. And furthermore, the DVD transfer is fantastic, with as many extras as one will find on a Disney non-special edition disc. Take another look at this one and be swept away.

The story of the animated film is similar to that of the first book, but contains parts of the second book. Dozy Alice is so silly she follows trouble by chasing a talking rabbit down hs hole. At the bottom, she drinks an unknown substance which helps her get through a talking door into Wonderland. Here she meets the Dodo, TweedleDum and TweedleDee (who tell her the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter), the Talking flowers (watch out for the snobby Iris!), the Caterpillar and the Cheshire Cat. She even has un-birthday tea with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. However, Alice gets caught up in a game of croquet with the Queen of Hearts, and later a trial. The whole thing becomes such a nightmare, Alice realises she’s had a dream while she dozed off.

Firstly, I don’t know why loads of people think this film is cheesy. I know Alice isn’t for everyone, but when you look at the other films made based on Children’s classics by Disney (eg- Jungle Book, Hunchback of Notre Dame), you’ll see it’s more faithful than those films to the original. However if you have read the books and haven’t seen this film, some characters are missing (eg- Duchess, Mock Turtle, Knave of Hearts, White Knight). This may just think that Disney has ruined this classic forever. They haven’t. It’s the best adaption I’ve ever seen.

Although I actually have the PAL version, I suppose the movie is just the same over in North America. The best bits are the Walrus and the Carpenter, the garden of singing flowers and flamingo croquet. And the Mad Tea Party is still the funniest part of a Disney classic. So buy this movie. Wether it’s a video tape or DVD.

Whether or not you are a fan of Rob Zombie’s music or films is irrelevant, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is a pure blast. If you can, imagine Fritz the Cat minus the political commentary and double the nudity and violence, as Zombie adapts his own comic to tell the story of professional wrestling super celebrity Beasto (voiced by Tom Papa) who is on a never ending adventure of action and babes. He and his hot, Nazi-zombie hunting sister Suzi X (voiced by Sheri Moon Zombie) embark on a quest to rescue foul-mouthed stripper Velvet Von Black (voiced by Rosario Dawson) from marrying wanna-be world conquerer Dr. Satan (voiced by Paul Giamatti). In the middle of all this are plenty of “I can’t believe what I just saw” moments, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them visual gags, hilarious songs and music, and plenty of animated graphic ultraviolence; so much so that you can’t help but enjoy what you find here. Yes, as you can probably tell by now, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto isn’t for everyone, but if any of the aforementioned sounds appealing in the least, you are almost guaranteed to love this animated flick, regardless whether or not you’re a Rob Zombie fan. Also featuring voice work from Zombie regulars Brian Posehn, Ken Foree, Geoffrey Lewis, and cameos from Sid Haig and Bill Moseley in their House of 1000 Corpses/Devil’s Rejects roles.

After a great many years in conception and production, horror director/artist/metal legend/all-around bad mofo Rob Zombie hath finally bequeathed unto us his animated masterwork “The Haunted World of El Superbeasto”. Was it worth the wait? Well, it’s a mixed bag to say the least, but if I told you I didn’t have a great time I’d be lying to you. What we have here is a twisted tale of stupidity that bombards you with cartoon breasts and behinds, potty humor, racial caricatures, homages and cameos from every corner of the entertainment universe, a truly bizarre comedic soundtrack that sounds like a collaboration between Tenacious D and Flight of the Conchords, and general Rob Zombie madness like you’ve never ever EVER seen before. Sound good? Hop onboard.

What’s the story? Who cares? It’s dumb. This film is about chaotic, childish glee. It begins with a classic black-and-white Universal move by giving us a friendly warning that what we are about to see may horrify us. He’s not wrong, but the movie is far from scary in the traditional sense. It takes on an animation style similar to Ren & Stimpy and utilizes devices and sound effects from all of the innocent classic cartoons we grew up watching. Then all the girls take off their clothes and use prehensile female anatomy in ways that make you embarrassed to be watching then you see your favorite horror characters and get all happy and then all the tailkicking starts and there’s Nazi werewolves (Zombie really likes Nazis..and werewolves…and especially Nazi werewolves) and zombies and Nazi zombies and they have their own theme song and then there’s more boobs and this transforming robot that’s all horny for this awesome chick who steal Hitler’s pickled head and Superbeasto is a luchador who shoves a cat down his pants so he has a bulge and there is Dr Satan who is really a nerd and has a talking gorilla with a screw in his head then all this stuff happens and it’s crazy as fu…….[deep breath]…..Yeah, so this flick gets a bit crazy at times.

So I think we’ve established that the humor in this one is decidedly lowbrow. Let’s talk homages, references, and cameos. It’s pretty much the biggest draw here unless you are one to pleasure yourself to cartoons (which is okay, as a song in the movie informs us, because Japanese people do it every day….nice). Plenty of horror icons ranging from Dr Phibes to the Bride of Frankenstein and The Fly as well as characters from Zombies’ own films, but then there’s references to everything from Benny Hill and Jerry Lewis to Charlie Chaplin (who Beasto mixes up with Hitler) and movies like Taxi Driver and Planet of the Apes. Other amusing cameos of note include Courtney Love, the Olsen Twins, and a featured role for Michael Myers…..as street pizza. This is an infinitesimal sampling. Honestly, aside from the sheer twisted insanity the massive unending pile of homages and cameos are what is going to keep your interest for the full hour and twenty. This has to be some kind of record. Eat it, Tarantino!

Voice cast. Awesome. Rosario Dawson lets fly some of the most staggeringly ignorant ebonics you’ve ever heard onscreen. Normally, I’m unimpressed by this cheap style of humor, but in this particular setting it did the trick for me. The Mexican caricatures, however, go down as a fail in spite of the marvelous man-god Danny Trejo lending his voice. Getting a real Mexican to play a caricature just doesn’t sound funny, I guess. Tom Papa is pretty much The Man playing the title character. He has a really classic voice and delivers the lines with the perfect amount of sleaze and glee. Rob’s wife Sheri Moon Zombie was born to be a voice actress. As cute as she is onscreen, when she’s reduced to just a voice to an animated caricature her gigantic personality is just unbelievably charming. Again, big thumbs up for the cast.

Throw in some self-referential humor (including a song that plays during an homage scene stolen from a classic horror film that laments the cliche parody and asks if they got permission to do it) more cartoon boobs and ebonics slang, and even more cameos and references and that pretty much sums it up. The special features are a few minutes of extremely brief deleted scenes (one has Leatherface in it) and a very long set of unfinished alternate scenes. I’d have hoped for at least a commentary or making of after all the delays but whatever, Zombie. “The Haunted World of Superbeasto” is a great time if you’re looking for a cartoon to keep as far away from your children/parents/grandparents/girlfriends as possible. You may not get away with all of your brain cells intact, but you’ll probably leave with a smile. A stupid, stupid smile.

3 1/2 stars rounded up because I have a strong urge to watch this again. Soon.

“The Exiles” is another cinematic gem rescued from oblivion by the good folks at Milestone Film and Video. Directed by the late Kent Mackenzie, not long after he graduated from the University of Southern California, the film give us a rare glance at life of Native Americans in the big city, providing us with a unique and very important document of our times.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Exiles! Click Here

The movie adequately opens with numerous beautiful, historical photos – mostly portraits of Native Americans throughout time –, and right away we are told that “white men sent Indians to reservations, but some went to the city,” and we immediately meet one of the several characters that we’ll see in the next 72 minutes. We follow them in what turns out to be great part of a day in their lives, beginning when pregnant Yvonne arrives home one afternoon, where she finds several mostly unemployed men, bored as they could possible be, wasting time in nonsense. From then on, we follow them into their night rituals. The women mostly stay home or go to the movies; the men, however, have or apparently have all the fun. They go gambling, partying, drinking, getting high, and skirt-chasing. They do this until the sun rises, and repeat this destructive cycle every day.

“The Exiles” is an unpretentious, sincere film, done with the heart, and the director apparently allowed the actors – mostly Native Americans — to be themselves and play their culture. This exceptional movie depicts a well-known, sad part of our society, with defeated human beings, with defeated minds, as the main characters. It doesn’t matter where the plot takes place – the city or the reservation –, the stories are always the same. This is especially revealed in the long scene in which the boys go to party on a hill in the city Los Angeles known as Hill X, in which they drink and play the drums all night long, as they did in their reservations. This is their way to reminisce about their culture, their parents, their childhood, and their land.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Exiles! Click Here

“The Exiles” also captures a part of Los Angeles that is gone, because the whole film takes place in that city, mostly in a place known as Bunker Hill. We get to see how the neighborhood was during the early sixties, including the famous Angel’s Flight, which was located in that area. Angels’ Flight was out of business for a while, but it was recently rebuilt as a tourist attraction. Sadly, the neighborhood didn’t have the same luck: it was demolished to make way to corporate buildings, which constitute the current landscape of downtown Los Angeles. This story is identical to the fate that a place known as Chavez Ravine had. It was a happy site, mostly populated by Mexican immigrants, which was demolished to build Dodger Stadium — in short, the history of brown people. In addition, there are scenes filmed in Grand Central Market, in Downtown Los Angeles, a place which, for some reason, has been able to survive and thrive all these years. For us, who live in this weird and controversial city, it is important to see all this visual historical records.

In addition of the film, this magnificent two-disc DVD set is loaded with historical extras, featuring several shorts by Kent Mackenzie, including “A Skill for Molina”, “Story of a Rodeo Cowboy”, and “Ivan and his Father.” It also includes the documentary “Bunker Hill: A tale of Urban Renewal” by Greg Kimble, and “White Fawn’s Devotion: the First Native American Film. Furthermore, this remarkable DVD set also features audio bonuses, like “The Leonard Lopate Show,” with Sherman Alexie and Sean Axmaker, as well as interviews with these two personalities. Finally, there is also a DVD-ROM, with downloadable material, including “The Exiles” scripts (including the final version), publicity material, production history on “Bunker Hill,” “The Making of The Exiles” (MacKenzie’s Master Thesis), and much more. (USA, 1961, B&W and color, 72 min with additional material).

This movie is simply a masterpiece. There are no better words to describe it. The chilling morbidity of Rhoda Penmark, and the emotional ringer Christine goes through…it is wonderful! I am a fourteen year old girl who doesn’t like the Varsity Blues and Scream movies of my generation, I love the Bad Seed. Most of my friends, however, have never heard of it and don’t want to see it. I try to explain to them what a wonderful movie it is, but most of them just don’t care. All my generation has grown up seeing slasher films. None of them can truly appreciate The Shining, Psycho, or the elusive simplicity of the Bad Seed. I have seen it many times and know it word for word. It’s not a stupid slasher film, or even just a simple murder mystery. It is a solid psycological thriller. I adore it. I love LeRoy and his wonderful ability to be droll, I love Monica and her “I know everything” frame of mind, I love everything about the movie! My dream is to be in the play. Who knows? It could happen… :c)

I personally feel that this is one of the greatest horror movie made. Forget all of that blood and guts and popping out of the bushes to scare people. That fear only lasts for a second…This movie plays with your mind and lasts forever. Nothing is scarier than polite Miss Rhoda Penmark.
This movie contains brilliant direction and an amazing cast. Many people feel that the acting is overdone and that they act like they are still in the stage version, entertaining an audience in a theater but that is the way it was meant to be made. Making it look like a regular movie would ruin the essence of the evil, 8-year old killer. Nancy Kelly is truly amazing as Christine. Her “breakdown” scenes are heart wrenching and done very well. She is most-natural and does a wonderful job in playing a woman going through the delemma of whether or not she should hate or love her daughter. Her performance is beautiful, “She killed him! But she’s my little girl…and I love her!”. The highlight of her acting is when Rhoda just kills one of her victims (I won’t say who) and Rhoda is playing the song she always plays on the piano faster and faster and faster. It is such and amazing scene. She deserved the Tony she won during the play and the Oscar nomination. Now, there is Patty McCormack who is definatly chilling in this role. Her perfect smile is just as scary as her evil ways. When she describes the way she killed the little boy I always shudder ,”But he told me that he was going to tell on me…SO I HIT HIM WITH MY SHOES AGAIN!! I hit him harder that time.” After the scene where she confesses her murders and Christine tells Rhoda to throw her shoes down the incinerator, the shot of Rhoda’s sillouette tossisng the shoes while Christine just sits in the backround and watches with fear, as Rhoda smiles, brings chills down my spine. Her acting gets an A+ and she also deserved the Oscar nomination as well as Kelly. Another, nominated for an Oscar for her role, was Eileen Heckart for the role of (which I think is one of the greatest characters in theatrical history)Mrs. Dagel..the grieving mother of one of Rhoda’s vicitms. Although only appearing in two scenes, she makes just as big of an impact as Christine and Rhoda do. Heckart is brilliant in the role and it would be almost imposible to find someone who could do as good of a job as she did. Her beautiful monolougues are truly amazing and heartfelt. Other great performances are that of Henry Jones, the creepy Leroy who is the only one who realizes that Rhoda is evil, Evelyn Varden, as the housekeeper, Monica, who spoils Rhoda terribly, Miss Fern (I can’t quite think of her name), as the teacher at The Fern School, and Christine’s father (I can’t think of his name now either), who is a former mystery writer with a big secret that he is keeping from Christine, which has to do with why Rhoda is a bad seed, something inside of Christine that she passed down to her daughter.

There is a lot of controversy over the ending curtain call and the happy spank that Christine lays on Rhoda. I feel that the curtain call and spanking gives the audience a sese of relief since the movie is so disturbing.
I reccomend this movie to everyone that can handle a plot that is different and disturbing.
Don’t blame Rhoda for her murderous acts. It isn’t her falt, she is just a bad seed.

The last few years have seen some classic films that have been given back their old lustre via restoration, including such films as, My Fair Lady, Vertigo, Lawrence Of Arabia to name just a few. These films as well as this film have been restored by the restoration mavericks Robert A. Harris, and James Katz.

I must say after seeing an advance copy of this film that Rear Window looks incredible, especially compared to the Laser Disc copy I have as well as the poor copies that have been showing up on television and VHS over the years.

The colors are vibrant, in particular the reds which don’t give a hint of bleeding into the frame, and the image looks I imagine as close to the original as possible given the fact that this film is almost fifty years old now.

The aspect ratio is 1.66:1 which is the proper framing for this film, the sound is the original mono soundtrack and has been scrubbed up to remove any audio imperfections that have built up over the years.

Also included on this disc is a 55 minute documentary titled, Rear Window Ethics:Remembering a Hitchock Classic which is quite enjoyable.

There is a still frame gallery, a shorter documentary with the screenwriter John Michael Hayes, as well as the standard fare of biographies, filomgraphies etc.

All in all a quite impressive package and should be of interest to any Hitchcock fan as well as Cinema fans in general.

The ultimate Hitchcock classic, REAR WINDOW gives us a glimpse into the mind of Alfred Hitchcock, and in turn Hitchcock turns the mirror on us and forces us to admit our darkest desire…to be voyeurs.

That is exactly what Jeffries is. Jeffries (James Stewart) is a wheelchair-bound photographer who spends his time cooped up in his apartment, peeping in on the neighbours across the courtyard. He comes up with “names” for them; Miss Torso the ballerina; Miss Lonely-Hearts; The Newly-Weds and so on. His only contact with the outside world is his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) and his wisecracking nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter).

Unknowlingly witnessing the murder of Mrs Thorwald, he, along with Lisa and Stella, set out to expose the truth about Mr Thorwald (Raymond Burr) and uncover the mystery of her quick disapperance.

A beautifully-restored print by James Katz and Robert Harris (also responsible for the beautiful new renderings of MY FAIR LADY and VERTIGO), is the highlight of this DVD. The original negative was severely faded and turning green when Universal aqquired the entire Paramount film library. Color-correction and shadow detail are now back to their original state, as is the soundtrack featuring Franz Waxman’s sparkling score.

The ULTIMATE Hitchcock thriller, with more than a touch of romance and comedy.

First off, the still screen images and the DVD cover art (if you can call it that) really don’t do this great little independent film justice. If you’ve seen the design of the Terrans you might think this film is silly or only for kids. It’s not. It’s great, moving, beautiful to look at and probably the best Sci-Fi movie and animated film I’ve seen in quite some time. This film has an ending that no Pixar or Dreamworks director would touch. It doesn’t leave you with that empty feeling like a lot of animated films do – at feeling of disconnect. It’s a heart-felt film with big ideas. As one reviewer said, it made me think “What would I do it a situation like this?” If you’re worried about the celebrity voices or stunt casting, don’t. David Cross is perfect and actually quite serious in his role. Evan Rachel Wood makes you care for her Terran character. James Garner is haunting as an elder Terran. Justin Long is funny as usual. Luke Wilson was a surprise as well. The director has created a perfect little world that I want to go back to again and I might just upgrade to Blu-ray for this movie alone. The music is terrific. If you’re a lover of world-building sci-fi and great animated films you owe it to yourself to buy it. I recommend this highly to any fans of animated scif-i movies like Light Years, Fantastic Planet, Heavy Metal and Titan A.E. just to name a few.

The Battle for Terra was an independently produced 3D animation film that was in theaters in May. It played in some festivals like Tribeca and won Best Animated Feature at Ottowa Animation Festival, which is THE animation festival (Oscar nom Persepolis won the year prior). It got rave reviews from film critics like Ebert and Variety, but was purchased by Lionsgate who didn’t market it properly, hence a disappointing box office for this gusty little animated film. Which is especially a shame because in 3D it was achingly beautiful, definitely the very best use of 3D I’ve seen. Felt like you were swimming right along in that other world with gorgeous creatures like winged blue whales that roam among the clouds.

Also notable was the top notch casting. Evan Rachel Wood is especially excellent as the voice of adorable alien heroine, and Brian Cox haunting as the creepy Bush-like warmonger General. David Cross, one of the the best comedians out there right now, gave brief bits of comic relief as testy robot sidekick.

A great movie for families, who can enjoy the visuals and drama while giving kids an intelligent intro into ethics, environmentalism, ethnocentrism, and more. This is how family movies should be–entertainment that challenges kids to think.

“Utena – the Movie” is a masterpiece, brilliant in color and concept, and fascinating in its plot and meanings. Of course, if you want connect-the-dots animation and plotting, or if you think that Utena and Anthy are sweet little teenagers, then you’ll hate it, but this film was made for viewers who will want to see it again and again to puzzle out its secrets and mysteries. And “Utena” has secrets as well as some of the most gorgeous animation ever done, like the dance sequence and the final car chase. — The film operates on two distinct, but interpenetrating registers. One is symbolic, and the other surrealist. Utena and Anthy, now older than they were in the television show, have once again met at Ohtori Academy, once again to find each other in a kind of karmic repetition of their past lives. Symbols of the past echo throughout the film as dying monuments. Utena’s no-longer-really alive, once-boyfriend/lover Touga emerges from white shrouds to talk on the phone to Anthy’s equally dead brother Akio, the unprincipled headmaster of a previous Ohtori Academy that nonetheless still enslaves Anthy. Crimson roses grow on a platform cantilevered high above Ohtori, tended by Anthy, still the Rose Bride to be won by duel. And splashes of blood red crimson stain not only the roses but the walls and walkways of the surreal world of Ohtori. The crimson of the roses is also the crimson of Anthy’s blood, but the rose that Utena finds and that Anthy gives to her is white: unstained. It is a symbol of their undying love, loyalty, and interwoven fates. — The film lacks the virtually Wagnerian high drama of the television show. Instead, it is more modern (as befits the reprise of Utena and Anthy’s love story) and sharper edged, not absurdist, but surreal. The architecture of Ohtori Academy looks like a cross between de Chirico and a mecha designer gone mad, but that’s Ohtori for you, the world from which Utena and Anthy escape. — At one level, the film is simply the story of two young women who escape the repressions of adolescence to find themselves and each other. At another, it is an allegory of love, this between two women who will build their own roads together. At yet another, it is a portrayal of sexuality, warped and truly corrupt within Ohtori Academy, and centered and intimate between Utena and Anthy outside Ohtori. Ohtori is the world of consensus reality, and of acceptance of what is given and commanded, in brief, all the things that Utena and Anthy must escape. The Castle of Eternity, previously a hoped-for panacea for instant happiness, is now a polluting illusion, corrupt and lethal. It represents all that Utena and Anthy must destroy if they are to become real people, genuine and authentic. — That the film succeeds in all this, and much more (the music is marvelous), is a tribute to the skills of director Kunihiko Ikuhara and artist Chiho Saito, the woman who drew the original manga. It is not necessary to know the previous versions, although that adds depth to the film, because ultimately the film stands alone: the story of two young women in love who find their way to freedom.

Yeah, I saw the fansub on video. Excellent little film. If David Lynch did anime, itd probably be like this. Maybe not as twisted as the last episodes of the tv series, but still a treat for surrealists and lovers of dense incomprehensible metaphor. (Count me in). Like I said, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, that sort of thing, but with murder, incest, rape, betrayal, obsession, posession, sacrifice, true love, swordfighting and architecture Frank Gehry would puzzle over. But dont worry about family values, most of the adult themes are so densely obfuscated, it’ll go right over kids’ heads. Its all about friendship, love and loss, and growing up, essentially.

A great soap opera romance novel heavy melodrama and bizarre satire, with a cast of just too many princes and princesses, but this aint yer mom’s fairy tale.

And if you watched the tv series, all the characters are still here, but rewritten to be parodies of themselves almost, so if you havent seen the tv show, it will still be fun, but there’ll be weird references at times that are quite funny if you have seen the tv version.

And I dont want to hear any gripes about the Wagnerian heavy metal soundtrack music. Its really quite appropriate and grows on you.

Oh, make sure you watch a subtitled version. We all know dubbing is demeaning to the director and voice talents.

The Big Lebowski is on my top ten list of all time best films. I’ve seen A LOT of films by the way. I don’t need to explain to anyone why this movie is so brilliant, and why it continues to be a cultural phenomenon. I mention these things first because I don’t want people to feel like I’m giving the film one star. If I could I would give the movie 100 stars. What I’m giving such a poor review for is my distaste for movie studios pumping out special editon dvd’s every few years because they know a film has a huge following. This new “bowling ball” edition of Lebowski is further proof that Universal has nothing but contempt for the fans of Big Lebowski. They wrap it up in a nice big package and make it look slick, but that’s as far as the creativity goes into supplying anything new in terms of extras. Does anyone remember the terrible repackage they gave it a few years ago with a towel and coasters? No actual extras existed, but they still put it out as a revamped “deluxe edition”. Well, don’t expect much more here.

The only new extras to this edition are four very brief featurettes. They feature new interviews with all of the major players (with the exception of the Coen brothers, of course), but they mostly just sit around and say stuff like, “It’s a great film! It’s hilarious! Coen Brothers are geniuses!”. Err, yeah, we know all of that. It also has a featurette that centers around the Lebowski Fest which is vaguely interesting for a few minutes until it turns into the same old “Lebowski is great!” territory. The featurettes are a snooze fest to say the least.

What really annoyed me with this DVD, though, is that they included the SAME “Making of Big Lebowski” documentary that has been on every release of this film! Not only that, it looks as if it was recorded from an old VHS tape and plastered onto a full screen format. It looks horrible, and what’s more, we’ve all seen it before! How many times is Universal going to pump out the same damn extras to the same audience?? It’s an insult to be charged more and more money for the same mediocre extras that were never that good to begin with. Luckily I was able to rent this and didn’t actually buy it! “The Big Lebowski” will NEVER have proper extras until the people who created it (the Coen Brothers) are involved. We want a commentary, a full length documentary with in-depth interviews, and deleted scenes (and plenty of them!).

DON’T BUY THIS EDITION. It’s junk! Simply keep the edition you already have (the very first edition) safely knowing that you are not missing anything with any other edition!

Here we are, its Shabas, the Jewish day of rest…white russians in hand, awaiting the special edition of the greatest movie ever made…and what do we get? A bunch of fig eaters wearing towels on their heads…this is not a worthy adversary.

Compared to the original DVD release which is at least 5 years old, this so-called special edition offers nothing new except a strange intoduction and some on-set pictures from Jeff Bridges’ archives. Big deal. Hell, this “collector’s edition” doesn’t even offer the teaser trailer and the luxury of both wide-screen and full-screen formats, as the original release did. The making-of featurette is the exact same as before.

Basically, my associate and I have concluded that the Coen brothers have not achieved in the most modest task which was their charge. They have stolen our money and we have no choice but to warn you bums not to be swindled as we were.

Are we to believe that for $13.00, all we have paid for is new packaging, new interactive menus, and some bogus special features. Am I also to believe that Jeff Bridges and the Coen brothers were too busy to even spend a day recording commentary tracks and drinking some oat sodas? Hardly, dude.

Overall, this DVD did not tie my collection together. Go bowling instead.

My god, sirs, I will not abide this “special edition”.

I have to admit that my first reaction to seeing this on the video rack was suspicion that this might be another Aero-Troopers, the Plan-9-from-Outer-Space-awful, worst computer animated film ever made I wasted 90 minutes of life I can never get back upon the last time I took a chance on a computer animated film I’d never heard of before. However, despite some eerie similarities in world construction, this turns out to be one of the BEST computer animated films ever made, one I can recommend without hesitation.

To begin with the world of Dragon Hunters is simply gorgeous, a world of islands floating around in the sky, upon which gravity works oddly when it works at all. But this beautiful world is threatened to varying degrees by the dragons of the title, which range in degree of threat from annoying crop stealers to terrifying world devourers, thus the necessity for hunters of same.

Twenty years ago Lord Arnold lost his sight and his health trying to stop the World Gobbler’s last rampage, now he impatiently and all but hopelessly awaits the return of the knights he dispatched to try and stop his pending rampage. So his fairy tale loving niece, Zoe, decides to lend a hand by sneaking out and finding some noble knights like those in her fairy tales, but what she finds are our two hapless heroes. Can a little girl’s belief in them inspire a couple of two-bit, fly-by-night, down-on-their-luck dragon hunters into succeeding where a troop of noble knights failed, into stopping the most horrifying dragon this world has ever seen?

Well, the answer is obvious, but the fun is in how we get there.

Gwizdo and Lian-Chu make for a hilariously mismatched pair, whose widely differing reactions to Zoe, the dragon hunter groupie who is not quite as naive as she appears, threaten to tear their partnership apart,…

assuming of course that anyone survives this fiasco.

Note: Some retailers package this DVD with a free Dragon Hunters comic book, which is little to get excited about IMHO; Sergio Aragones did this sort of thing much better in Groo the Wanderer. The first 17 episodes of the first season of the animated TV show, which this movie is a prequel to, have been released on DVD: Dragon Hunters: Vol. 1 It’s A Dragon’s Life (ep. 1-4), Dragon Hunters: Vol. 2 Dead Dragon Walking (ep. 5-8), Dragon Hunters: Vol. 3 There’s No Place Like Home! (ep. 9-11), Dragon Hunters: Vol. 4 Don’t Look Now (ep. 12-14), and Dragon Hunters: Vol. 5 Unwelcome Guests (ep. 15-17).

I have to be honest, I don’t have the DVD but have an electronic copy of this film and have watched it several times. I’ve never read the comic or watched the tv show, or even heard of it before I saw the movie and was completely blown away by everything from the script to the amazing characters but most of all by the imagery.

If ever a film called for a blu-ray release, it would be this one.

I’ve been waiting for about a year for one to be released but just saw the regular DVD with comic book bundle at Sams’ Club yesterday. I almost got it but I’m still hoping there’ll be a blu-ray version.
