Sports Motivation

February 4th, 2010 by lucia9916719

People can be motivated in numerous ways. Researchers region that motivation is “a process through which a person makes utilize of available resources, time, talent, and energy, and distributes them in a map they determine.” This process is called the personal investment theory, and it includes a two-stage causal process. The first stage involves the effects of external factors and their influence on how an individual looks at a particular position. In the second stage, the individual takes into consideration a personal investment in the region. The personal investment involves an inner drive, a desire, or an plan an individual possesses as a reaction to external influences. Different athletes have different forms of motivation to withhold them dedicate to a particular sport. It may be enjoyment, physical fitness, social relationships, or goal attainment.

There are two kinds of motivation that enables sportsmen to execute a particular goal or task. The first type of extrinsic motivation in sports comes from external influences or people. People are extrinsically motivated to regain rewards, social recognition, or benefits. The second kind of intrinsic motivation is an inherent characteristic that feeds off one’s inner drive to achieve a goal or unbiased.

Intrinsically motivated people focus on a task for their fill sake. They have a sense of self-determination, and behold upon themselves as being able to meet the demands of a particular task. With the introduction of the Internet, there have been a number of sites solely dedicated to providing information on sports motivation. These sites also publish a number of sports related articles and quotes intended to motivate sportspersons.

Football – The Oakland Raiders

February 3rd, 2010 by lucia9916719

Al Davis has owned the Raiders since 1972. Originally founded in Oakland, the team played there until Davis moved them to Los Angeles in 1982. Later, the team moved encourage to Oakland in 1995 and remains there to this day.

The football team has had the colors of silver and dark since Davis was general manager of the team in 1963. He weak these colors originally because all TV’s were available in shaded and white only and these colors showed up better than others.

John arouse became the head coach of the Raiders in 1969. He later guided the team to its first ever orderly Bowl find in 1976. infuriate stayed on as coach of the football team until 1979 when he left the team and the league, to go into TV broadcasting.

In 1982, Davis moved the team to Los Angeles, due in piece to the refusal of the city of Oakland to remodel the football stadium. In their first year in Los Angeles, the team went to the well-organized Bowl and won. That has been the last time the Raiders have won a shipshape Bowl. In 1995, the team moved succor to the city of Oakland.

The fans of the Oakland Raiders are some of the rowdiest fans in all of professional football. They advance early for tailgate parties dressed in silver and gloomy paint, masks and costumes. One of the more rowdy spots in the stadium is known as the “murky hole”. This fragment of the stadium is definitely not for the feint of heart.

Hall of Fame

The Oakland Raiders have 18 recent members in the pro football Hall of Fame. They include: Marcus Allen Fred Biletnikoff George Blanda Bob Brown Willie Brown Dave Casper Al Davis Eric Dickerson Mike Haynes Ted Hendricks James Lofton Howie Long Ronnie Lott John anger Ron Mix Jim Otto Art Shell Gene Upshaw

There have been many other considerable players on the Raiders over the years including: Ray Guy Lyle Alzado Cliff Branch Bo Jackson Carl Weathers (later played Apollo Creed in “Rocky” movies) Jack Tatum Jerry Rice

The Raiders have been known as a franchise that has had more than its piece of awful football drafts over the years. This, combined with the constant head coaching changes by Al Davis, has made winning sometimes difficult over the years. One of the more memorable draft day mistakes was the selection of timorous QB Todd Marinovich.

The Oakland Raiders have some of the storied rivalries among any NFL football team, with the fiercest being San Diego, Denver and Kansas City. Even when the Raiders are not as competitive, teams do not like playing them. That is one reason why the team will always remain as one of the more approved ones in the league.

This is an enjoyable movie set in Colonial America, and it seems fresher for that reason than maybe it really is. But the story is good, managing to be both patriotic and cynical, until a limp ending.

John Wayne battles Loyalist George Sanders and corrupt trader Brian Donlevy, who is selling arms to Indians, under the *protection* of Sanders. So Duke does what Duke does so well, busting up the shipment and seeing that the values of Western Civilization prevail. Then the movie ends not with a shootout or tomahawk battle, but rather with well-acted yet shallow courtroom intrigue. Sigh.

Still, another thing that makes this movie better than the plot might otherwise allow is the charismatic Claire Trevor, beautiful even in what is basically a throwaway tomboy role. Let’s call her the Duchess, at least for the purposes of this movie; not because she was in very many notable westerns or had any particular tie to the Duke, but because she was such a consummate performer that she could hold her own in a scene with him, as she did in Stagecoach.

Another point this film serves to illustrate is how even programmers like this one had better scripts than most anything produced today. Despite the lopsided story, it is evident that great care was given to the dialogue, and much devotion given to performances.

In summation: Generally more entertaining than Drums Along the Mohawk; not better, mind you, just more entertaining.

I have to admit it. John Wayne made a LOT of “generic” westerns.

This hides the fact that he really DID provide some STELLAR performances.

And this is one of them.

ALLEGHENY UPRISING, Stagecoach, The Searchers, Back To Bataan and True Grit are ALL John Wayne at his best.

He got the Oscar for Best Actor in “True Grit” but he deserved it more for his performance in “The Searchers.” a movie in which he portrays a man dead-set on EVIL revenge.

Allegheny Uprising presents John as an early colonist (before the American Revolution). It tells a fascinating tale of when we were all proud to call ourselves “British” citizens.

No cheesy shootouts or costumes…but an intricate portrayal of the building of our Nation.

Newly out on DVD…it’s well worth a watch!

Finally, the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon that aired on ABC in 1993-1994 (known as “Sonic SatAM” to the fans) comes to DVD in its entirety. Many of those who managed to catch the show on TV well over 10 years ago fell in love with it then, and have been fans ever since. It had just the right blend of comedy, drama, and action, with no one of those standing out too much above the others. It was also a fairly dark show for its time. This is a much anticipated release in the Sonic fan community, and this DVD set contains all 26 episodes, collecting the complete series in one 4-disc set!

This cartoon was made back before the SegaSonic storyline really got developed, and you won’t be seeing familiar faces like Knuckles, Amy Rose, or the more recent characters from Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow and Rouge, simply because, well, none of them existed back then (Sonic 3, which was Knuckles’ first game, didn’t even come out until the year after it started airing). But that doesn’t detract from the show at all as there are plenty of well developed characters added here that weren’t from the games. This cartoon set-up the first real storyline behind the whole Sonic universe (in the U.S. anyway), and in my opinion, was one of the best American made cartoons ever. The Archie series of Sonic the Hedgehog comics was loosely based on this cartoon, but really failed to capture the quality of writing used to produce this show. (Archie has since moved on to try to emulate the games more).

Despite the age of this show, if you’re a Sonic fan, you definitely shouldn’t pass this one up. Definitely the best Sonic cartoon ever produced, in my opinion, as well as one of the greatest cartoons of all time. I’d give it more than 5 stars, but well.. that’s the most you can give here on Amazon.com :)

The short review: Way Past Cool! If you’re a fan of the series you have to have this DVD collection!

The long review:

EPISODES

For anyone who’s had to stand watching cut or badly recorded episodes from TV, I can’t express how good it feels to watch these in clear stereo with no tracking lines and perfect picture. I can even see the paintbrush strokes in the background art it’s so clear! So far as I can tell, everything has been restitched back together wonderfully and I can see no weird edits. It’s just like I remember in Ben Hurst’s words “fresh – like watching it for the first time!”

BONUS FEATURES

A few people have complained about the lack of bonus features, but I can’t say good enough about them. The series was produced 10 years ago, since then most if not all of the artwork in the vaults has been lost, sold online (I’ve seen a number of cels pass by there) or locked away. The fact they managed to find even a small amount of high-quality artwork makes it well worth the trouble. I too wish there was more, but the stuff they did find is very good. I believe there are really only two bits of the extended/deleted scenes that are truly new material but it’s all well archived and the one silent animatic has the script super-scripted in so it’s easy to follow. The concept art is beautiful, there are a few new model/expression sheets in the interview with Hurst and tons of background art that will blow you away. This is the same quality one would expect in feature post production work. Both of the interviews are engaging, enlightening and even a little tearful at times, especially Ben’s moving speech about Season 3 and his support for the fans. Considering how hard the crew at FUS has worked to get this DVD, they deserve it. The DVD menus themselves are a blast — I have seen a number of poorly produced menus with “craptastic” art in them and these blow me away. They are thoughtful and even funny! In one part Snively hits the “Bonus Features” button. It’s the little things like that which show the effort and care they put into making the DVD.

BOX ART

Okay so some of the artists who contributed art are very young and aren’t what you would call “good artists”. But to me, it’s refreshing to see a company that actually WANTED and ACCEPTED input from the fan base. It shows that we are all united together as fans of Sonic, no matter what our background is. You can tell each of the artists was excited and trying their best to make something to show how much they love the show. I go as far to say a few of these artists ARE exceptional, some of them even drawing “on-model” as we in the animation business say. Ken Penders (while not really a fan per se since he’s worked professionally on Sonic Artwork) did a pretty good job with the cover, as it did include most of the cast and it doesn’t show anything that isn’t there (Thank Goodness his arms aren’t blue either :D ). Compared to the first test cover, this final one is much better. Dr. Robotnik is the best part of the cover, he’s very well drawn.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Just so you know where I’m coming from, I was prime age when SATAM came out, being 10 at the time, and it is a big reason I am who I am today and certainly a reason why I’m going into the animation industry. That being said I can’t express enough why it’s important to support this release. They did a fantastic job. And I think it’s worth buying this for any Sonic fan, especially if you know someone who likes Sonic X —

In Sonic’s words, “Get ready to rock, cause this will knock your socks off!” :)

If you’re new to Sonic and like this series, I highly recommend checking out Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Underground as well (the other two shows produced by DiC, the predecessor to SATAM and it’s later cousin, respectively.) A lot of fans would say otherwise but I just can’t get enough of the blue blur!

I’ll be discussing both the two disc and three disc edition of “Hellboy” here. Unfortunately, the automated systemed won’t allow me to post this as a separate review so, just in case the review shows up under both, I’ll include both.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hellboy! Click Here

TWO DISC EDITION:

It must be hell to have horns and a stone hand. Rasputin the mad monk who manipulated the Russian royalty prior to the Russian Revolution never died. He not only survived being stabbed, shot, poisoned and drowning but during World War II he worked for the Nazis. Hitler hoped that Rasputin might be able to unleash the 7 Gods of Chaos to help Hitler win the war and dominate the world. The only thing that can stop Hitler and Rasputin’s minions which includes a nasty masochistic half mechanical man named Kroenen (Ladislav Beran in some scenes)is Professor Broom (Kevin Trainor as the young Bloom) who has studied the occult. He and a group of American soldiers storm Rasputin’s castle stopping the 7 Gods of Chaos from entering our world. In the process Rasputin is sucked into the other strange realm and a tiny red monkey like creature that looks like Satan with a stone hand is released into our world.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hellboy! Click Here

Sixty years later Rasputin’s minions revive him bringing him back from the other side. Meanwhile Professor Broom (Hurt) has established a paranormal division of the F.B.I with Hellboy (Perlman) and Abe Sapien (Doug Jones but voiced by David Hyde Pierce of “Fraiser” fame) a half human/half sea creature and Liz (Blair) a human with the ability to control fire. With the addition of a new assistant John Myers (Evans) recruited from the F.B.I. these five are all that stand between us and chaos. The only problem is that Rasputin has plans for using Hellboy himself to help release the 7 Gods of Chaos himself.

“Hellboy” looks surprisingly sharp and vivid capturing all the primary colors that percolated beneath the surface of Mike Mignola’s comic book. The film does suffer a little bit due to all the extras included on the first disc and could have benefited from concentrating only on picture and sound quality of the film on the first disc and all the extras on the second.

The two disc set clearly went on an eating binge. How else to explain all the wonderful extras packed on this great set. To begin with we have a nice introduction by the director. On the first disc featuring the feature film there are branching behind the scenes sequences you can access while watching the film itself and then return to where you were. It’s a fascinating glimpse behind the movie almost giving you the experience as if you were on the set then watching the assembled dailies the next same day.

THREE DISC DIRECTOR’S CUT:

There are some subtle and not so subtle differences in “Hellboy-The Director’s Cut”. The big difference involves how Rasputin was changed when he came back from the other side. There’s also a number of dramatic moments such as Professor Broom discovery of his cancer as well as some fight sequences that have been extended in minor but subtle ways. That said, it’s essentially the same film but richer for the include of the 15 or so minutes of additional footage.

The first disc has a brand new commentary by director del Toro and a commentary/isolated score by composer Beltram. The storyboard track now has new images added to it (quite a bit more as a matter of fact). The “branching comics” feature is much more extensive than the previous one but the features on the first disc remain pretty close to the previous edition.

The second disc has the bulk of what disc two of the two disc set had but there are a couple of additions worth noting. There’s also a multi-angle storyboard comparison (which I believe to be new). I couldn’t find the UPA cartoons on the original but haven’t had a chance to investigate all the noons and crannies of the three disc set.

Disc three has a new video introduction by Ron Perlman. Here we get a video and audio commentary by the main actors(in fact it’s the same as the audio commentary from the previous edition only this time we see the actors as they recorded their commentary and also see the movie as their watching it in a picture-in-picture mode). There’s production workshops also included here, make up and lighting tests (although all involve the final make up for Hellboy), “A Quick Guide to Understanding Comics with Scott McCloud”–a featurette. Mike Mignola is absent from the commentary track but his pre-production artwork is included here. Ther’s also the director’s notebook (again–it’s on two discs here for some strange reason), conceptual art galleries and comic book artists pin-ups on the last disc as well. Personally, I would have put the actors in pip mode vs. the movie as the version they’re commenting on it is the theatrical release not the Director’s Cut. Not sure why Columbia chose not to do this. Aside from that minor complaint (and not being able to find the UPA cartoons), this is the ultimate fan boy edition. Oh, there’s also a reproduction of part of Rasputin’s diary by Mignola as well included in paperback form.

The packaging is nice with three slimline DVD holders highlight Red, Blue and Liz. Personally, I would also like to have had a booklet similar to the one that came with the two discs set. Also, I’m unclear why the “seamlessly branching” DVD technology wasn’t here to allow both the director’s cut and the theatrical editions (much like “Alien” and “Aliens”). I don’t have any use for keeping the previous edition (it was traded in) just for the theatrical cut (and I personally feel the Director’s Cut is a superior version of the movie even though most of the changes are fairly minor overall).

Overall, this is a terrific boxed set that has some minor flaws. Hopefully Columbia will learn from this mistake and correct any future releases of Director’s Cuts vs. theatrical editions. Also, releasing both at the same time so fans can make a choice (vs. being double dipped) would be the right thing to do from a customer service stand point. Plus, there wouldn’t be all those used copies eating away at their sales of the set.

The Director’s Cut release completes with an unrated, extended cut of the film, in total about 132 minutes (10 min. more than the special edition). This DVD comes with 3 discs, most of them are same as the 2-disc special edition (feel free to read my review on Hellboy Two-Disc Special Edition), but this adds alot of extra brand new special features, all new director’s commentary, production design, workshops, deleted scenes, etc. This edition details are roughly shown below:

[Disc 1]

- Director’s Commentary: new commentary from Guillermo del Toro, exclusively for the Director’s Cut DVD

- Composer’s Commentary with isolated score

- Video Introduction to Disc 1 by Guillermo del Toro

- DVD ROM: Director’s Notebook, Printable Script and expanded Script Supervisor’s Book

- Five Board-A-Matics: side-by-side comparison of scenes with the animated storyboards

- Weblink: Hellboy merchandise

- Three deleted scenes with optional commentary

- Scene deconstruction: director Guillermo del Toro walks us through the evolution of a scene from his sketches to the storyboards to the finished scene

- Kroenen’s Lair: four storyboard to film comparisons

- Maquette Rotations Gallery

- Poster Explorations for the Hellboy theatrical campaign

- Filmographies

- Previews

[Disc 3]

- Cast Video Commentary with Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor and Rupert Evans

- A Quick Guide to Understanding Comics with Scott McCloud

- Video Introduction to Disc 3 by Ron Perlman

- Conceptual Art Galleries

Overall, it is a great movie with lots of extra freebies features. If you are the Hellboy comic fans, go for it! If you already own a copy of the 2-Disc Special Edition, you may not find this worth the money, but if you don’t have a copy yet, this is a no-wrong choice!

I have been researching the UFO question including crop circles, animal mutilations and human abductions for about 15 years. I’ve seen 90% of the available videos and read many of the books available on these subjects. This 3 DVD collection is head and shoulders above most presentations. Opinion is kept to a minimum, and verifiable evidence is kept at the forefront. I recommend that anyone who watches this series and maintains the position that we are not being visited should watch it again and pay attention this time. The evidence is indisputable.

Very good, well presented. The 3 DVD’s covereed each topic well. I would recommend purchase of this product.

Unfortunately, Little Shop of Horrors and every other Roger Corman Filmgroup production lapsed into public domain years ago and have generally been available on VHS and DVD only in poor-quality editions ranging from merely bad to atrocious. (The only Filmgroup features to get a decent official or semi-official release so far are Bucket of Blood, Beast from Haunted Cave, and Night Tide.) After researching every DVD version of Little Shop of Horrors available (there are at least eight!) I played a hunch and went with GoodTimes to replace my VHS copy, and I’m very pleasantly surprised at the overall excellent quality of the source print. When I saw the “preserved using the best available elements” line at the beginning of this disc I thought ‘yeah, right,’ but I have to admit that this is the brightest, cleanest, sharpest (if not exactly razor-sharp) print of this film I’ve ever seen. The black level, contrast, gray values, and shadow/highlight detail are fine, and physical damage is limited only to some very light speckling and blemishing (!!). On the downside, the transfer itself seems to be somehow deficient (low bit rate?), causing areas of flat white or smoothly gradated grays in the image to exhibit some very faint but noticeable pixelation or banding, especially during the opening credit sequence (areas of flat color seem to be DVD’s Achilles Heel). The casual viewer probably won’t notice this phenomenon unless it’s pointed out, but it’s there. That said, the superior quality of the source print more than makes up for this one barely noticeable flaw; this is still most likely the best edition yet available of this classic ’sick humor’ gem and well worth the bargain price. It definitely blows away every TV print and cheapjack PD video version I’ve ever eyeballed. Grab this before it goes out of print.
The movie itself still entertains tremendously today, a funny, goofy (dare I say charming?) horror-comedy that basically plays like a stage farce (most of the action takes place on one or two sets). The story is essentially a remake of Bucket of Blood with a change in locale and a few fresh twists. This time Jonathan Haze portrays everyschlep Seymour Krelboine, who lives with his alcoholic hypochondriac mother (she listens to KSIK radio) and works at Mushnick’s skid row flower shop. Seymour (temporarily) finds fame, fortune, and romance by nurturing (and eventually murdering for) an exotic talking cannibalistic plant. Mel Welles, in his finest hour (literally), steals nearly every scene with his droll portrayal of perpetually exasperated Gravis Mushnick, and Jackie Joseph (Andy Griffith Show, Who’s Minding the Mint) seems born to play pretty, ditzy Audrey. Corman regulars adding to the fun include Dick Miller (Walter Paisley in Bucket of Blood) as Fouch, a flower-eating client, John Shaner as a sadistic dentist, and 14th-billed Jack Nicholson (featured prominently on most tape and disc box art) as his masochistic patient. Shot on a shoestring in just three days (at least all the interiors), Little Shop holds up better than many big-budget comedies of the day (anyone watched Story of Mankind lately?). Much credit must be given to Charles B. Griffith, unsung hero/architect of the AIP/Allied Artists/Corman style. His list of credits reads like Corman’s greatest hits: It Conquered the World, Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Undead, Not of This Earth, Teenage Doll, Bucket of Blood, Beast from Haunted Cave, Wild Angels, Death Race 2000, etc. Griffith’s clever, witty screenplay is a model of late-50s sick humor, working in a dead-on Dragnet parody, some wonderful malapropisms and bits of wordplay, lotsa Yiddish humor, and a handful of his patented icky-creepy moments. (Griffith also voiced the plant, Audrey Jr., played a few walk-ons, and directed some second unit scenes, all uncredited.) Fred Katz’s memorable score is alternately goofy and spy-jazzy, and, unlike some of Roger Corman’s other attempts at comedy (e.g. Creature from the Haunted Sea), I find his touch just right here, ably supporting Griffith’s verbal bits with complementary editing patterns (check Sgt. Joe Fink and Det. Frank Stoolie’s hilarious introductory scene). Lighter in tone and a bit broader and more farcical than Bucket of Blood (which I personally prefer), Little Shop, judged on its own terms, is still fresh and engaging, though the low budget is obvious at times. I’m not sure how fans of the Broadway show or movie musical will react to the original (I admit to being a purist myself), but if they share a taste for low budget horror or 50s-style sick humor they’ll probably find it an offbeat treat.

Roger Corman’s Original 1960 version of “The Little Shop Of Horrors” is considered by many as a true cult classic comedy of B-Movies,even the most respected of film critics.Unfortunately depending on the tastes and opinions of film fans that were used to seeing this legendary film comedy through the public domain since there was a lack of copyright in the titles,(same thing had happen to “Night Of The Living Dead”) and for many years since the dawn of the videocassette and late late movie shows, those versions were vastly inferior and often poor-looking in terms of presentation and contrast. Now the great folks at Legend Films have finally put out a brand-new definitive and excellent restored presentation of this cult hit on DVD in both the original black & white version as well as the disc’s main presentation of showcasing a brand-new restored digitally colorized version too.As with previous selected Legend releases of classic horror/B-movies in their DVD series, the disc features a well-done and at times hilarious commentary by MST3K’s Mike Nelson and the great thing is that you can listen to the track on both versions of the film, giving the b&w version sort of a MST3K-flavor to it (I love how he refers to the opening Filmgroup logo as little Reese Cups !).Despite packaging claims that is the first time the film has been colorized,it’s actually the second colorized incarnation of the film.First colorized on videocassette in the very late ’80’s with lousy and at times amateur results, this Legend version completely blows away the first attempt and looks like it was actually filmed in color, but of course this films’ legendary budgetary constraints prevented from actually filming it in color.Of course lets not forget that the film features a very very young Jack Nicholson,in his fourth film role,in a memorable role as a crazy dentist patient.I must say, this Legend version of “Little Shop” is probably the most superior and sharpest looking out of all the previous versions of the film that you’re possibly going to see and no wonder it was transferred from an excellent 35mm print of the film ! Other extras, besides the Nelson commentary, round out the package including both restored color/unrestored b&w trailers to “Little Shop”,and the following colorized trailers for “Plan 9 From Outer Space”,”House On Haunted Hill”,”Carnival Of Souls”,and “Reefer Madness”.Plus a gallery of nine man-eating plants,if any kids are planning to do a school project on man-eating plants, this could actually be a fun reference guide, and also a very short clip called “Man Eating Plants” which is actually the president of Legend Films Barry Sandrew vigorously eating vegetable plants such as celery (always eat your vegetables folks !).Well-done packaging, excellent eye-catching menus and a sparkling transfer of both versions will definitely please any film buff, both Hollywood and B-Movie fans alike ! This is by far one of the first best DVD releases of 2006 and is highly recommended for old and new fans alike instead of those who only prefer the 1986 spectacular Frank Oz musical remake with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.Highly recommended !

Just Recently,Buena Vista Home Entertainment in association with Roger Corman have finally released an “authorized” DVD release of “Little Shop Of Horrors” as well as a nicely restored original black & white version of Nicholson’s debut film “The Cry Baby Killer”.Unfortunately, the recent disc’s presentation of “Little Shop” is in fact the ORIGINAL colorized version, slightly mentioned above, that was first produced and eventually released to video in 1987 by Color Systems Technology. The source print used for the color version (other than the fact that the quality was directly copied off a video master for the DVD) is surprisingly in quite good condition, but it really truly is one of the worst examples of 1980’s colorization technology I’ve ever seen and will probably be the last. The colors are often the same as certain objects (ie: the outside of Mushnick’s Shop and the greens for the flowers, etc.),tons of continuity errors (ie: clothing, signs, etc.) and does anybody wish to care seeing Audrey Jr. looking like a talking watermelon plant? Reportedly, that color version was authorized by none other than Corman himself and it’s easy to see why many directors above his stature hate and disregard colorization.Nicholson/Corman fans alike aren’t going to be impressed with that bust of a release and it’s very easy to see why the ‘87 colorized version was out of circulation for many years.Easier said than done, the newly restored Legend Films release is by far, hands down, the real winner due to the technology, version options, and bonus materials !

Starring Richard Thomas and Patricia Neal, this made-for-TV-movie was written by Earl Hamner and led to the popular series, “The Waltons.” The stories were based on Hamner’s childhood.

(Note: This movie features a somewhat different cast than did the series. While the Walton children are the same, many of the other adult roles in this film, except Grandma Walton played by the late Ellen Corby, were recast for the series.)

A homespun tale, the movie focuses on rural life during the Great Depression and the anxiety a family feels one Christmas when their beloved Father is overdue after being forced to travel to the city to find work and earn money for his family’s survival.

Each of the characters reacts to his departure in different ways. Ultimately, the oldest son, John-Boy, portrayed by Richard Thomas, takes important steps to manhood and toward his ultimate career as a writer.

This film has a harsher, more real feel than did the series, and tackles such difficult subjects as racial bigotry and the economic underclass.

The great Patricia Neal is spectacular in her portrayal of the mother. Tougher than the portrayal that came later by the gifted Michael Learned, Neal’s Olivia Walton is a genuine force of nature who rarely displays her softer side. Life is very difficult, but love is always present in the Walton home.

If you’ve never seen this movie, you owe it to yourself to view a more unvarnished, less “suburban” rendition of life in this beloved family. A scene in which little Elizabeth, who desperately wants a doll for Christmas, receives one — with a cracked and broken face — from a “charity” Missionary only after having to “perform” scriptures, is so raw that it hurts. “It’s dead,” the little girl sobs into her brother’s comforting arms.

This film is anything but dead. There is real life in every panel that reaffirms true family relationships and the Christmas spirit without being heavy-handed. Look also for a gifted supporting performance by the talented William Windom, who plays a Depression-era Robin Hood.

If ever a TV-movie deserved to be released on DVD, this is it.

I saw this movie when it was first on in 1971 and have watched it at Christmas most every year since. Years ago it was usually on TV around Christmas and I taped it in the early 80’s and have been watching this tape in recent years. This year I purchased the DVD (for only about $11! – I think blank VHS tapes were that much in the early 80’s). The quality is outstanding, even when viewed on my 19-inch computer monitor from a couple of feet away. You can clearly see every detail (1933 on the car license plate, prices on the wall in Ike’s store, even snow flakes melting on someone’s face). Picture quality on most DVDs made from TV shows or TV movies is nowhere near this good. Believe me, this DVD is a real bargain.

I am so happy that I bought this TV because it is just outstanding. I did a lot of research on numerous TV’s and was not totally satisfied until I saw this Panasonic Viera S1. I was planning on buying a TV with 120 Hz but the S1 handled fast motion very well. To summarize, here are the pro’s and con’s.

Pro:

Horizontal viewing angle

Great standard def. compared to other LCD. Amazing high def.

Blacks comprable to Samsung unless really off angle

Clarity/sharpness

Vivid colors

Thin attractive bezel

Built quality of TV and remote

Motion Focus technology

Price

Cons:

Blacks wash out if extremely off angle vertically (probably >150 degrees)

No fine control of colors

Largest size is 37 inches

If you are in the market for a TV this size, buy this thing and you will not regret it. I feel like I stole this TV from Panasonic because I bought it for $699. It outperforms a lot of LCD’s that are $300-$500 more expensive. There is not another LCD out there in this price range that packs this much punch period!

Bought this TV based on my great experience with my Pany 58″ plasma. Not many reviews on the S1 as of yet, however, older model Pany LCD’s had good reviews. This was the 4th tv that I purchased for the family room, which included a Toshiba 40″ lcd (not Regza), a Vizio 32 lcd and a Vizio 32 plasma. The first 3 were returned and this one is a keeper.

As expected, set up was a breeze and it mounted to my articulating wall mount without a hitch. Picture settings had to be tweaked to get the proper flesh tones, but in a few minutes it looked great. Of course, I like to tinker with all of the setting in order to get familiar with the tv. Overall, picture looks great. Sound on this tv is very good. Need to adjust the settings to increase treble and base, and also to turn on the surround. Definitely fills the room with full clear sound.

The tv is in a bright room and there can be minor glare depending on the time of day and viewing angle. Putting the picture in vivid mode takes care of any glare issues. Actually, it really is not a problem (as compared with the Vizio plasma that I returned) Not that I bash Vizio because I have 3 of them and am basically very pleased with their performance.

The only disappointment was the remote. I was hoping that it would be the same as with my plasma, however, it does not have the same solid feel. For some reason, they took a nicely fitted convex backed remote and gave it two concave sections that just don’t feel right. Also, they switched the volume and channel buttons which ia pain after you get used to it being the “correct way” on the plasma remote. I must add, however, that the remote is far superior to the junk that you get with many brands of TV. Vizio used to put out a great remote, however, the later models sure dumbed it down. Can’t say much good about the Toshiba remotes either.

All in all, the Pany S1 is a keeper. My search for the right tv is finally over. Turned out that I got a great price and fantastic delivery with Amazon affiliate 6th Ave Electronics. Delivery in two days and price of $707 w/free shipping. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a 37″ lcd.

I spent a lot of time deliberating over whether to buy this TV. Since it costs $100-200 less than comparable TVs from Samsung, Sony, and Sharp, I thought there must be a catch. Eventually I decided to take the risk and purchased it, and I am very happy. The picture is outstanding – I have absolutely no complaints about this TV. It looks at least as good, if not better, than any other HDTV I’ve seen. I would recommend it to anyone.
