It’s as if Darren Aronofsky filmed your very have worst nightmare, assuming you had anything to do with drugs or drug addicts. If ever a viewer wondered about the interior location of being of drug addiction, this is the movie for you. Aronofsky dilapidated Hubert Selby Jr.’s book and screenplay as his source material and the source material is knowing.

I appreciate movies which look surreal states. This must reach in fraction from my fascination with surrealist art. Aronofsky’s film probably owes more to the leisurely Salvador Dali than to any other film director. I’m also fascinated by movies which travel as if you were viewing them in a dream place. We do consume a mountainous deal of our lives in a dream location and behold life from an entirely different perspective in REM time. Aronofsky seems to understand this very well. Aronofsky and Selby, in intended irony, load their characters with dreams of their hold which are destined to remain unfilled in gargantuan fraction because of their drug addictions.

Ellen Burstyn plays the easiest addict to understand and she does her usual masterful job. She wants to lose weight so takes diet pills (hasten) to do so. Her dream is to be on tv which is what spurs her to the rush. Her son Harry, his girlfriend Marion, and his best friend Tyrone exhaust the outright illegal street drugs and dream of becoming mountainous drug dealers instead of grievous level pushers. On the blueprint to drug fortune, they themselves become addicted.

Jared Leto as the son Harry Goldfarb does a first rate acting job. Frankly, prior to this role, I didn’t contemplate he had any acting talent. There is a growing pickle with his injection infected arm which will remain visually with you long after the movie is over. Jennifer Connelly as Marion Silver is every bit as fabulous as Burstyn in this film. She is Harry’s girlfriend, soon to enter a life of degradation due to the nightmarish descent into drugs.

Because this film is so visual, it is an ideal one for seeing in the best possible format available. Blue-ray was invented for objective this kind of film.

This film is rated #65 on the IMDb list of the best films ever. I’ll confine my comments to the quality of the disc itself. I’m fairly picky, and I derive both the audio and video quality to be quite marvelous. The sad levels, color saturation, dissimilarity and sharpness are all genuine. The sound in both lossless and lossey audio is also top-notch. I employ high-end equipment and I can’t fault the technical aspects of this release. Don’t let the obscene notice anxiety you…this disc is a bargain.

Just bought this earlier this evening, and it’s perfect. I was surprised to search for that this company had made another “fireplace” blu ray before, but was unsuitable what with the children and phones, etc. This company must have gotten the feedback, because there is NONE of that on this updated one.

Just the sights and sounds of five different fires. All of which watch tremendous, and really present off the blu-ray quality. My only spot is that the beach scene in this video isn’t quite “beach-y”. It’s more like you are at a lake approach the woods as you don’t hear sounds of waves in the background, but the natural ambiance of birds chirping and other outdoor noises. However these work honest as well!

A enormous win, and again, if you’re stunned because of the previous version of this disc, don’t misfortune. It’s fixed, and it’s now what you were looking for. No complaints here.

I’ve been looking for a top-notch fireplace blu-ray disc for exercise during the holidays. But, every one I’ve seen has always been lacking in quality. When I heard this one had been re-done to address quality issues, I decided to give it a try. The result is grand. You collect several scene options, and each looks incredible in high-definition. And the sound options are welcome as well. You can decide to hear the crackling fireplace alone, or you can hear scene appropriate music. Well, I almost knocked a star off of the review for the music (I objective didn’t like some of it), but I was looking for the fireplace sound alone, so I left it alone. The music seems to be a mix of midi and synthesizer music. Some people may like it, but honest give me the fireplace itself, and I’m joyful.

Steady camera, and the scene is never interrupted. If you are going to purchase a fireplace…um, simulator, this is the one to derive.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), venerable Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me weep.

I view it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a disquieted young boy star-struck by a well-known explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become rapid friends, and assert to one day go to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they win their dream home and fix it up, hoping to occupy it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through weak age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a cheerful marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s hurt when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers halt in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and proceed to Paradise Falls. A obsolete balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of gleaming balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a bulky, fearless kid trying to procure a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the musty man and the slight boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a mountainous rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of halt calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his shaded mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by glorious hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole recent world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, fat of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Accept another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to design an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster exciting movie. But in the meantime, they’re collected putting out savory spicy movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety ancient man. It’s a charming, fun microscopic adventure record with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet runt anecdote about loss and fancy.

As a child, the apprehensive Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared worship of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, go into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a precise estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an fervent, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the scramble. Awful kid was unbiased trying to win an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle walk to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a tremendous emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious weak man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the passe guy is very familiar to Carl — and to engage Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as well-liked as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty frail coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can like Carl’s treasure for his lost wife, and his stupid realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they explain all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing feeble together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy approach to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of huge dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Contemplate Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frosty! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an veteran airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and clear to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is certain to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special leer. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I appreciate you”) and act the device dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to find shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of unique stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable lively shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to teach potentially unsuitable baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously though-provoking, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can appreciate. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

It’s gloomy in the outrageous that the First World War has largely fallen by the wayside. If we hear anything about the conflict at all, it’s usually on the History Channel or another network airing a documentary rotund of grainy, sad and white clips of men stumbling over the top of trenches. Interest in historical events tends to plunge off significantly when those eager pass away, and in the case of the generation that fought this horrific war not only have they exited the stage, they have left the building as well. I developed a life long interest in “the war to destroy all wars” after seeing Peter Weir’s 1981 film “Gallipoli” in a little, rush down art house theater at the age of ten. I didn’t understand the historical context at the time, but this dramatic interpretation of events that unfolded in the Dardanelles during 1915 left a lasting impression on my impressionable mind. I recently rewatched the film and can say that it mild works as an intense drama and as a serious antiwar statement. Weir’s overt hostility toward the British commanders at Gallipoli, however, doesn’t stand up as well. By the plot, this is one of the films that propelled Mel Gibson to international stardom.

Weir decided to focus his film not on the massive armies battling away in Europe, but on two individuals living in Australia. Archy Hamilton (Note Lee) and Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson) are two of the fastest runners in the country. Hamilton trains with his demanding grandfather, who promises the young lad that if he works hard he may yet go down as the next national sports hero. Frank, on the other hand, wanders around the country with a few buddies taking any job he can regain and generally honest having a lot of fun. News of the escalating war in Europe is vague and distant, referenced only when someone brings up a news yarn they saw in the paper. Archy wants to go and fight, attracted by the lure of glory that has suckered millions of young people since the dawn of time into concern. Frank doesn’t deem of war as glory, and when his pals bring up the conception of enlisting he quietly makes his situation known. Both of these young men’s lives are forever changed after the demolish up competing against each other in a foot bustle at a regional exquisite. Archy barely wins, but a friendship develops between the two that soon finds Frank tagging along when Archy decides to enlist in the celebrated cavalry. Frank agrees to join with Archy, once he discovers that the ladies cherish a soldier, but goes into the infantry after failing to qualify for the light horse unit.

It really doesn’t matter anyway since horses won’t do a bit of disagreement when the ANZAC (Australian and Current Zealand Army Corps) soldiers head first to Egypt and then the Dardanelles for combat against the Ottoman Turks. What the war trouble needs are bodies righteous of running headlong into a withering wall of machine gun fire, and cavalry troops minus their steeds will work in this capacity objective as well as infantrymen. Before they advance the killing fields, Archy and Frank reunite during a training exhaust in Egypt. Hamilton convinces his commander to enlist Dunne in the cavalry, claiming that his skills as a runner rival his believe and that both men will form a major contribution to the regiment. Weir shows us plenty of carefully crafted scenes of the men having a righteous time in Cairo, of the deepening camaraderie taking space even as the war looms larger and larger in the background. The movie takes a doom and gloom turn as the ANZAC forces land at Gallipoli to grasp section in the fighting. Casualties mount as attacks designed to expand the beachhead fail under Turkish machine guns. Soon, Archy and Frank know they will have to go over the top too, and realize they will certainly perish in the process. The conclusion to “Gallipoli” is one of the most emotionally grinding, soul shattering denouements in motion describe history.

The only thing I found extremely irritating about “Gallipoli” is the cheesy synth musical gain, which now sounds so early 1980s that it dates the describe terribly. I deem the message about how people join up to go to war for all the evil reasons, however, is level-headed highly relevant. And if there was any war that everyone should have avoided, it was World War I. Generals and leaders composed subscribed to antiquated notions of warfare, never taking into legend machine guns, poison gas, and airplanes would decimate the troops. The fatalities were truly appalling, with millions perishing in muddy trenches during the four year conflict. Weir expertly depicts the squalid conditions of the trenches, but he goes too far blaming the film’s fatal charge on the British commanders. First of all, far more British soldiers died during the campaign in the Dardanelles than did members of ANZAC. Second, why space the onus for the war on the British? Plenty of commanders on all sides made mistake after mistake in this conflagration, mistakes that resulted in so many fatalities that it’s a wonder humanity didn’t rise up and cast their leaders into the fire.

“Gallipoli” wins the day in the slay thanks to the charm of Designate Lee and Mel Gibson. Weir’s cinematography sinks its claws in as well. Check out the shots of the Australian outback, the Red Substandard party, and the landing at Gallipoli to learn why. The transfer looks respectable, but the only extra on the disc is a short interview with Weir about the making of the film. I wanted a commentary track for this film desperately, and aloof hope a special edition will near on the market in the arrive future. If you haven’t seen “Gallipoli,” check it out soon.

There’s been a few things said about this movie, several reviewers mentioned that it was slow-moving, and another pointed out with exasperating pedantry the historical inaccuracies, but I’d like to say that I consider ‘Gallipoli’ is a helpful movie. It was well shot and well acted, the characters were actual and believeable, the obtain was magnificient, the chronicle was consuming, and although the script had less action than, say, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ it also wasn’t wasteful – one wouldn’t have cared about the people if one didn’t know them.

Which is also the point. If `Gallipoli’ wasn’t historically suitable, and it’s tough to recount a yearlong yarn in an hour and a half, one does glean the point. Which, of course, is that wars, especially this one, and especially this battle, are slow, self-serving and pointlessly destructive endeavors.

I’m dumbfounded by the reviewer who chose to lambaste the portrayal of the British officers in the campaign. I’m surprised an Aussie would say that, but then again there’re plenty of Yanks who’ll second guess Harry S Truman from now till the extinguish of time, so who am I to think. While I’m the first to admit that those words were probably not said, I have to own that the blue blood of the capital officers taught them not to give a damn about the sweat and blood of some abominable sons-of-criminals from a lost colony. I’m not alone, and I quote from John Merriman’s History of Original Europe, p1059, “Other [historians] agree with most contemporaries who believed that [Gallipoli] was a needless diversion dictated by British colonial interests in the Middle East and for which Australian and Modern Zealander troops paid a disproportionate notice.”

The aristocratic attitude of the officers in the Stout War was the single thing that caused the casualty rates The well-bred officers didn’t care that they were sending men with bolt-action rifles against entrenched machine guns because they were unprejudiced peasants (or Australians) anyway. That is the historical truth, and I for one like how it came out in the training sequence as well as the battle sequences of this movie. It belongs in the collection of anybody who doesn’t want to go to war.

Larger than life and with twice as many brothers, “Wyatt Earp” struts onto the DVD scene in a “Special Edition” that looks radiant but is less filling than one might have expected. This sprawling episodic epic begins with Wyatt as a child preparing to hurry away from home and join the Union army like his brothers Virgil and James. His father (Gene Hackman in a brief but noteworthy performance) catches him as he leaves and returns him relieve home. While Wyatt clearly yearns from the adventure he feels his brothers are experiencing, his father knows the truth about war and sets him straight.

Later, James and Virgil return home both exhausted and beat up from serving in the army. Their father has place on his traveling shoes and announces that the family will be entertaining West where there’s opportunity for a lawyer and rich land is ready to be farmed.

Wyatt after many trials and tribulations ends up out west as a lawman. He manages to interest his brothers in coming out to encourage elegant up Dodge City as well. We also fetch the thunderous conflict at the OK Corral as piece of the conclusion of the film and peep a improbable performance by Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday. While the epic is a bit too episodic and flawed, the film manages to keep one’s interest throughout it’s 190 microscopic running time due to Costner’s unassuming portrayal as Wyatt. The right highlight, though, is Quaid as Doc capturing the fragile gunfighter as he fights the consumption that eats him alive.

With the long wait for “Wyatt Earp” to appear on DVD, one would have hoped to have a special edition with a commentary from director Lawrence Kasdan, star Costner and a peep wait on at the film’s reception when it was first released a decade ago. Unfortunately, the Warner Special Edition sticks to the basics for the most part: we gather the current 190 dinky theatrical crop of the film (sans the extended scenes that were added to the video version) ; two documentaries one “original” one that includes vintage interviews and the other a 1994 TV special; “lifted scenes”, i.e., the footage included in the special video edition and the theatrical trailer.

Let’s stark with the obliging stuff first. The pleasing anamorphic widescreen transfer finely does justice to Kasdan’s record vision for this larger than life western biography. The remastered 5.1 sound captures fair about every nuance from the unusual theatrical exhibition 10 years ago. Honestly, “Wyatt Earp” hasn’t sounded this top-notch since it was first released in 1994.

The negatives are few but worth noting. The documentaries are delicate pleasant although a bit too brief. Perhaps Kasdan preferred his recent theatrical cleave to the extended version. That could clarify why these sequences indicate up on the second disc and aren’t integrated into the film. The lack of a commentary track is a substantial minus for the disc, though, as 1) Shiny how the film compared to the life of Earp would have been fascintating and 2) Kasdan’s plans while shooting the film and comments would have been welcome.

With the novel deluxe release of “Originate Range”, I would have hoped for better from this release. On the other hand, broad care was worn in transferring this for DVD and the extras are roughly what “Unforgiven” received when it was re-released. Kudos to Warner for such a wonderful looking DVD although, again, more extras should have been included.

“Silverado” is one of the best westerns ever made, and “Wyatt Earp” is another splendid western by Lawrence Kasdan. The film is a ample sprawling attempt to retract the whole of the iconic lawman’s life, from his boyhood honest after the Civil war through the Tombstone years, and onward toward the Alaska gold-fields. “Wyatt Earp” is unusually ambitious in this regard for a Hollywood film, and attention to historical detail was unbelievable. I loved Costner as Wyatt Earp: as an actor he is very distinguished in the Gary Cooper mold; not overly expressive, and this is honest the factual price for a legendary lawman, & steely gunslinger. Dennis Quaid is a phenomenon as Doc Holiday: skinny and haggard, he looks tubercular (unlike the well fed Val Kilmer in the droll “Tombstone.”) The photography is sumptuous, & the film gather dramatic and memorable. I can even laud the make-up artists who made the 40 something Costner perceive believably youthful for his scenes as Wyatt Earp in his 20’s. Yes the movie is long, and a tighter hand could have prevailed during editing, but compared to the typical Hollywood schlock one sees, “Wyatt Earp” is well worth the hours you invest in viewing it. One of my popular films of the last ten years. A expansive film in the western genre!

On a whole number of levels, this movie shouldn’t have worked for me. It takes remarkable license with historical facts, not only in order to supplement details that are not portion of William Wallace’s record but actually, wherever convenient. (”We stuck to history where we could but hyped it up where the anecdote let us,” actor-director Mel Gibson admits on the DVD’s commentary track.) It is graphically and unabashedly violent: from throat cuttings to battle scenes that have film blood literally splashing onto the camera, beheadings, a traitor’s head smashed with a

wrecking ball, and fully 15 minutes of Wallace’s “purification by hurt,” it shows some of the most brutal behavior conceivable. It also engages in some of the most blatant delighted profiling in unusual film history – not fair in the drastic kill administered on the lover of King Edward I. “Longshanks”’s son, but equally in the portrayal of both characters and their relationship as such. Last but not least, Mel Gibson plays a man at least 10 years younger than himself, a choice often enough bordering on the ridiculous. (Gibson insists it was the studio’s wish that he not only perform and express but also star in the title role.)

And yet …

From the first notes of James Horner’s hauntingly comely soundtrack and the first sweeping camera shots over the Scottish highlands, blending seamlessly into the pictures of the Scottish riders on their diagram to the alleged truce talks initiated by Longshanks, and the narrator’s, Robert the Bruce’s (Angus MacFadyen’s) introduction – “I shall protest you about William Wallace: Historians from England will call me a liar, but history is written by those who have hanged heroes” – there is no mistaking that this is an anecdote fable, taking up the tradition of the likes of “Spartacus” and “Ben Hur.” Like those movies, “Braveheart” is a narrative of heroism and of having the courage of one’s convictions; chronicling the life of its hero from first treasure to loss, betrayal, battles and final confrontation with his arch-enemy’s powers. Like both of them, “Braveheart” won multiple Academy Awards, not least for John Toll’s outstanding cinematography. Like “Ben Hur,” it also won the coveted awards for “Best Describe” and for “Best Director.” And maybe I’m honest a sucker for that kind of epos …

To my surprise, I found Mel Gibson to approach across very believable as William Wallace; age disagreement, Scottish brogue and all. Both his acting and his direction are informed by a definite sense of vision for the movie and its title character. Now you are ready to be a king.”

Then-newcomer Catherine McCormack stars as Wallace’s childhood cherish Murron, whose scenes with Wallace provide for much-needed tenderness in the first hour of the movie – particularly touching is four year conventional Murron’s gift of a thistle (Scotland’s national flower) to orphaned William – and dissimilarity sharply with the bloodshed that follows virtually incessantly from her death onwards. Sophie Marceau matures from teenage party queen (”La Boum”) to French Princess Isabelle; Brendan Gleeson stars as Wallace’s boyhood friend Hamish, David O’Hara as his heaven-conversing, self-appointed Irish guardian Stephen – one of the movie’s most intellectual characters – and Brian Cox brings all his astounding shroud presence to his brief appearance as Wallace’s uncle Argyle.

When I left the theater after having witnessed this movie’s almost three hours of blood, gore and intense emotions for the first time, I felt as if somebody had given me a fist punch into my stomach. I was so struck that I was almost unable to bellow, and dragged my moviegoing companion into the next bar, to revive my spirits with a glass of whiskey. (Scotch, of course) . Having seen the film countless times since then, I no longer need that whiskey to overcome its drastic impact – but I calm regain gooseflesh during many of its key scenes and can’t search for it without feeling emotionally drained at the extinguish.

“Braveheart” is quite simply, one of the best and most successful movies ever created and a stout piece of that success comes from the efforts extended by Mel Gibson, as he wore three different hats for this masterpiece, those being producer, director and star. The one oddity about this movie for me was that I exquisite distinguished wore out my VHS copy of it and had, a couple years ago, purchased the DVD but only honest recently took the opportunity to peek it again and no matter how many times you peruse this movie, it is smooth a ravishing, compelling and extraordinarily lively film that draws you in to the life of William Wallace despite already incandescent how it’s going to ruin.

The one thing that drives this movie is the spirit that Mel Gibson puts into his character of William Wallace and it is of no surprise that “Braveheart” won five Academy Awards, including Best Report of 1995 and Best Director for Mel Gibson. The only suitable surprise was that he wasn’t among the top five nominated for or won the Best Actor award.

High praise also goes to the long list of supporting actors and actresses that starred in this top-notch film! Most valuable was the performance by Sophie Marceau, one of the most fair women on the planet. Patrick McGoohan was absolutely fabulous in the role of the villain Longshanks, King Edward I, delivering a memorable performance.

One of the most indispensable performances in this film, among the many, was the work done by James Horner who was responsible for the procure. As is normally the case when his name appears in the credits, everything about the salvage, from the first reel to the last, is incredibly well blended into the movie and serves extremely well in enhancing the experience of the movie.

The Premise:

Seen a viewing of ‘AMERICAN VIOLET’ recently.. And I had mixed emotions: upset, depressed, gratified, and surprised! To be falsely accused of a crime, that you know deep in your heart you did NOT commit, is one thing… But when your so-called lawyer suggests you to rob a plea bargain, oppose to fighting for your clearance makes one wonder who can you trust… This movie, based on fair events, is heartwrenching, as it is an eye-opener!!! That’s what happened to Regina Kelly in Hearne, Texas benefit in 2000. Ensnared in a mass arrest of suspected drug dealers at her housing project, the young single mother was charged with selling drugs in a school zone. Despite her insistence that she was innocent, her court-appointed attorney pressured her to secure a plea bargain to avoid many years in prison and the loss of her children. With no criminal recount and no drugs found on or reach her, she refused the deal. Instead, with the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union she filed a class action lawsuit.

Although Kelly’s case was reported in a documentary by PBS’ cutting-edge Frontline succor in 2004, American Violet brings a fictionalized version to a broader, mass audience. Co-director Bill Haney (along with Tim Disney) says he heard about Kelly’s case on National Public Radio as he was driving; it so moved him that he pulled his car over to the side of the road and cried.

Kelly is quoted in the Chicago Tribune as saying the film is “90 percent honest.” The depositions, the courtroom scene in which she fights to hold custody of her children, and many other scenes are word-for-word accounts.

Like Clint Eastwood’s Changeling, this legend of a defiant woman’s struggle against infamous law enforcement strikes a universal chord. But American Violet also addresses present-day criminal justice themes of racial profiling, coerced plea bargaining, and – most of all – wrongful convictions based on fake statements by jailhouse informants.

I highly recommend this remarkable movie.
