THE GIRL NEXT DOOR is a film based on Jack Ketchum’s novel, which is based on true events. I’ve seen a lot of horror films in my time, and I have to say that the scariest ones are always the ones that hit close to home. When you read the newspaper, watch the news, you sometimes see and hear things that are almost unbelievable that humanity can sink into such aberrations. This film borders around the line between exploitation and voyeurism, but believe me, “The Girl Next Door is a realistic, disturbing and genuine journey into one girl’s personal hell.

Synopsis derived from the dvd back cover:

In a quiet suburban town in the summer of 1958, two recently orphaned sisters are placed in the care of their mentally unstable Aunt Ruth (Blanche Baker). But Ruth’s depraved sense of will soon lead to unspeakable acts of abuse and torture that involve her three young sons, the neighborhood kids, and one 12-year old boy whose life will be changed forever.

People may say that some stories don’t need to be told and I agree with them. “The Girl Next door” is arguably something that should have been left on the shelf. However, those who deny such stories also naively deny the twisted reality of life sometimes. This film is sort of a “coming of age” piece with a very dark, edgy premise that plays like a morality drama. In viewing this film, the viewer has to get pass the disturbingly graphic images to be able to appreciate its subtext, otherwise one will think that it is an exploitation flick with minors involved. Being based on a true story, the viewer has to keep in mind that this case did happen, and may POSSIBLY happen again somewhere.

The viewer has to pay special attention to the film’s themes in order to understand why director Gregory Wilson opted to make this disturbing film. “The Girl Next door” is a tale of unfulfilled love, the moral responsibilities of adults, helplessness of children, and for people to be sensitive to what’s going on. All these themes revolve around the film’s main premise; abuse and the violence against women. The film is an emotion-driven film, no, it doesn’t play on the graphic images and torture as much as the tiresome Eli Roth torture flicks. The film-makers knew what they were doing when they shot this film. They paid extra attention to the needed emotions inherent when one experiences such an ordeal. Meg, a pretty, innocent young girl is the victim. She loses all that she holds dear to humiliation, abuse and torture. Meg’s sister is a victim of her own helplessness and fear. David is a young boy is sort of a victim also. He loses his innocence and up to his days as an adult, (as shown in the film’s beginning and the climax) he still wishes that he could have done something to save Meg. David is a victim of his own conscience. Even Ruth’s three boys are victims in their own way. They are victims of Ruth’s twisted upbringing and philosophies on life and women. What is truly almost unbelievable is that the neighborhood kids are insensitive to Meg’s plight, in fact, they seem to enjoy it. People may argue that some kids don’t know what abuse is, thank goodness, my parents brought me up to be able to identify such things. Also, in this situation, “birds of the same feather flock together…”

The true instigator of the children’s ordeal is Aunt Ruth; played by Blanche Baker. The actress makes an outstanding performance. Baker’s portrayal as the main antagonist is realistic, disturbing and creepy in her own way. I’ve read somewhere before that the most dangerous psychopaths are those who think they are noble and serving a just cause. Such is the case with Aunt Ruth. Aunt Ruth preaches her mad, twisted indignation to her children (and to David) with convincing fervor that I couldn’t blame them into buying into what she’s saying. Another intense human horror is revealed: children do try to emulate their elders.

Now, I haven’t read the novel and I’m pretty sure the book will have more answers. The film isn’t perfect, some characters aren’t fleshed out and “happy” people will no doubt have a lot of difficulty connecting to its story line. Also, David’s parents are a bit one-dimensional and felt like they were minor plot devices to emphasize David’s tortured conscience. The film however, does a lot more things right than wrong. I rather thought that it was very ingenious for the screenplay to show David as an adult haunted with his past nightmare, and how he has never forgotten his childhood friend; Meg. That up to this day, he wants to do something good to another being even at the price of his own life.

“The Girl Next Door” is not a film for everyone. Controversial and disturbing to its core, the film will no doubt offend a lot of viewers but if you look at the subtle messages instead of the graphic scenes, viewers will learn to appreciate what the film’s premise is all about. This film is an unrelenting look at human horror that will stay with the viewer for a long time to come. Forget monsters, vampires, demons and werewolves, the scariest thing may just be occurring right next door…

Recommended timidly. The film is of such disturbing nature that only the most timid recommendation may be given. [4 ½ stars]

Not knowing anything about the book I walked in to this expecting a fun and creepy horror film. What I got was easily one of the most unforgettable film experiences I’ve ever had. Gruesome and disturbing without ever being trashy. As a matter of fact, the most amazing thing about the film is how great the direction and performances are. The woman who plays Ruth creates one of the most frightening monsters in film history. Hats off to the rest of the cast and crew for making a film that’s going to take me a while to shake off. I’m not gonna go into details of the story. All I’m saying is SEE IT. You won’t be sorry you did.

In 1975, this became the hottest show in the United States and many other countries, and ALSO became the first successful drama series in TV history to feature a woman in the title role.

And although this may sound like faint praise, in an era where Emma Peel had regrettably become a faded memory, if it hadn’t been for “Police Woman”, there literally would have been no (albeit more-fanciful) “Charlies Angels”, “Wonder Woman”, “Bionic Woman” or, a few years later, muscular “Cagney & Lacey”.

But suffice it to say that Season 1 of “Police Woman” is easily its best year: the show was, for the period, edgy and focused, with Angie Dickinson (then) chewing the scenery with a mesmerizing blend of toughness and effervesence; and her chemistry with co-star and onscreen boss Earl Holliman is very good as well… In this freshman season, “Police Woman” often felt like a taut, foreboding movie, both dark and sun-streaked… No wonder it went to Number One for a few months.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Police Woman – The Complete First Season! Click Here

Subsequent seasons weren’t quite the same… There was pressure to tone down Miss Dickinson’s almost effortless sex-appeal, and in so caving to pressure, the series wound-up squelching her personal power and strength as well, and so the show went off-track a bit: as a result, only about 50% of the episodes of seasons 2 and 3 are really up to par, and season 4 contained just a small handful of good installments.

Perhaps all that’s why the show seems to have disappeared from view for quite a while…

Regardless, season 1 is an absolutely great ’70s cop show classic– funny, dramatic, a bit shocking for TV (at the time) in places, with a moody and often-cinematic ’70s flavor— and Angie Dickinson and Earl Holliman NEVER had such a good vehicle.

4/17/06: Unfortunately, no one seems to know it’s on DVD, and the mediocre sales reflect that. Plus, it hasn’t been available much for a while, so the kids haven’t seen it.

Sure, its period 70s action, but if you’ve ever seen some of the action flicks of the 70s like COFFY or FOXY BROWN, you know that some of them are more violent than anything being made today. In some ways, POLICE WOMAN is surprisingly violent. When was the last time you saw an episode of a cop show where a bank robber shoots a witness with a shotgun? And in that same episode, the POLICE use shotguns to blow people away. The controversial lesbian episode, FLOWERS OF EVIL, (which was only shown once on TV) is very entertaining and nothingthat GLAAD would get upset about. In fact, one of the final scenes has Angie getting one of the women to confess by relating that she isn’t shocked or judgmental and in fact had a gay roommate in college who fell in love with her. The colors on the show are vibrant and the acting is swell with lots of fun guest stars (William Shatner, Larry Hagman, Bob Crane, Rhonda Fleming, Monte Markham, Marian Mercer, William Katt, Smokey Robinson, Della Reese, Robert Vaughn, Lara Parker, etc). Best of all is the numerous commentaries–two solo one with Angie Dickinson butthe majority with Angie and Earl Holliman chatting. Their great chemistry is still strong 30 years later…esspecially when they start bickering over facts (their Who’s On First-like monologue about Mark Harman is laugh-out-loud funny; and Angie still has an infectious laugh–at one point she laughs at a piece of dialogue and just cant stop laughing). This show hasn’t been in syndication in years, so most of the episodes are still surprising and fresh. I cant wait for season two! And keep those commentaries coming!

If you are hesitating or are on the fence about buying this series, DON’T WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE! Gravitation is the Platinum standard of shounen-ai and is a fantastic anime series period. While the manga is sensational and at times edge-of-your-seat suspenseful, the anime series is just as gripping, and the characters are rich, colorful, and beautiful. Seeing everyone’s favorite sullen novelist Eiri Yuki in full color animation is well worth the purchase, but that’s just the icing on a sweet, sweet cake.

The songs are great of course, and the English voice cast is actually more than just tolerable — they do a really good job. The box itself makes for a beautiful display, and each of the 4 disc cases features a bold, colorful, sexy rendition of Shuichi and Eiri. The extra features are fun and informative, especially the liner notes which detail certain specific details in some episodes that may be missed or confusing.

The few love/kissing scenes are extremely tame — hence the shounen-ai label and not yaoi — but sweet nonetheless. There are mushy, “awwwww”-inspiring moments for those that like that, funny moments, guns, laughs, cries, and everything in-between. There’s something for everyone. Even my hard-core action anime-loving friends enjoy Gravitation. There’s just something about it that hooks you in and won’t let go…

All in all, this is one of my favorite anime series of all times, and is one of the most beautiful dvd boxsets I’ve ever owned. While you may be able to find it less expensive on another site, BUY IT. You will NOT be disappointed. After all, It’s…Gravitation…

This is a fantastic set and has some fun extra features. It has all the episodes and the language settings are easy to access. However, the set doesn’t include the OVAs. However, the show is adorable and the translations are quite good. A big thumbs up from me.

Molokai: The Story Of Father Damien is available for streaming or downloading.

Molokai is the story of a priest, Father Damien, who chose to spend his life serving in a leper colony. The movie is a heroic story of great compassion and persistence in the face of physical hardship and isolation. Filmed on location on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai, the scenery is gorgeous, and it touches on the history and culture of Hawaii. I found the movie very, very moving, but some may find the conditions of the lepers too depressing to bear.

An Australian, David Wehan plays the role of Damien. Two other actors you may recognize are Kris Kristofferson and Peter O’Toole, who both play lepers. Peter O’Toole, who I never like previously, seems to have really enjoyed his role.

Molokai is one of the more remote Hawaiian Islands. During a leprosy epidemic in Hawaii during the mid-nineteenth century, the government established a peninsula on the island of Molokai as a leper colony. It was chosen because it was so difficult to get to or escape from.

In the movie, there is a scene where, instead of transferring the lepers to rowboats, the crew forced the lepers at gunpoint to jump overboard and swim to shore. These included women and children. In the actual historical incident, some people drowned, some died from injuries from being bashed against the rocks on the beach, and others died on shore of exhaustion. Although not shown in the movie, often, ships depositing lepers would tie a rope from the ship to land and the lepers had to climb hand-over-hand to shore.

Father Damien had grown up on a farm in Belgium. He was very strong physically and was an experienced carpenter and builder. Before going to Molokai, the historical Father Damien had been a parish priest and pastor in several parishes in the Hawaiian Islands. He learned to speak Hawaiian and understood native Hawaiian culture. In the opening sequence of the movie, Father Damien is shown helping some Hawaiians build a house. Bounty hunters arrive on horseback to take away suspected lepers. Villagers run and hide. The scene is reminiscent of the slave catchers in Roots. Historically, before going to Molokai, Damien experienced parishioners being taken away to the colony, and he had assisted people in avoiding the bounty hunters (not shown in the movie).
Father Damien volunteered to be assigned to Molokai. Damien’s bishop instructed him to take all measures to avoid infection. In the movie, we see Damien simply ignoring the instructions. In historical fact, after two months on the island, he formally requested permission from the bishop to risk infection. He did this because it was the only way he could gain the lepers trust.

The leper colony was a living hell. When Damien arrived in 1873, there were six hundred lepers with inadequate housing and food, and no doctors, nurses, or medical supplies. Essentially, there was no law. Gangs of physically able lepers looted the belongings of the very sick. Prostitution and pedophilia were rampant. The bodies of the dead were either thrown into a ravine or buried very shallowly, where they were dug up and eaten by wild pigs. To be sure, with the arrival of Damien, there was a significant improvement in the lives of the lepers, but in the historical reality, the conditions and problems Damien faced were far worse than depicted in the movie.

Besides serving as priest, Damien’s construction worker skills were invaluable. He built, supervised, or organized volunteer labor to build hundreds of buildings-over half the buildings in the settlement. When he arrived, there was no running water. He built a pipeline (In the movie, there is no pipeline). Damien cleaned and bandaged wounds and amputated gangrenous limbs. The son of a farmer, he taught the lepers to grow crops (not shown in the movie). He was the island’s undertaker, funeral director, grave digger, and coffin maker-he built over 1,600 coffins. He also witnessed seven murders (not shown in the movie).

Besides having no resources to care for the sick, Damien had constant conflicts with both the government health authorities and his own religious order. In addition, he had many critics in the medical and clerical professions. The Hawaiian government’s board of health didn’t like him simply because he made them look bad. He alone was accomplishing orders of magnitude more for the lepers than the whole state government. His religious order was not able to provide any other permanent people to help, until near the end of his life. To their credit, they tried, but the only other people they could get to go to Molokai were misfits that were so bad, Damien sent them back. The order had other priests in Hawaii doing good work, and they didn’t like Damien getting all the publicity.

Father Damien did not go to the leper colony just care for their bodies, although he did so tirelessly. He also went to save their souls. In the movie, it is very moving to see Damien administer the Sacraments. He buries lepers with half-bodies of rotting flesh, with all of the dignity and respect that one would expect to be given a member of high society in Paris or Rome. Actual historical witnesses on Molokai said that Damien said Mass every day with the utmost reverence and liturgical decorum in a tiny chapel filled with lepers bleeding and spitting, with Damien seemingly oblivious to an almost unbearable stench of rotting human flesh.

Since 1944, medicines have been developed that stop leprosy from being contagious and spreading within the body. The colony on Molokai was disbanded in 1969. At the time of the filming, there were forty-seven surviving patients from the settlement. Today, they are free to come and go as they please, although they all feel like outcasts shunned by society. A number appeared as extras in the movie. Today, Hawaiians consider Damien to be one of the great heroes of their state.

When I ordered this DVD I knew a bit about the life of Fr. Damien but nothing about the film. I expected it to be “pleasant fare” but not much better. What a surprise! Molokai is as near to being a perfect film as could ever be made. It is an interesting and inspiring story that is told without any of the over-sentimentality one might expect from a “religious” film. The screenplay is wonderful – absolutely believable and natural dialoge delivered flawlessly. The cinematography is breathtaking and the soundtrack is, well, I’m going to track it down to buy it – a first for me. So much for the technical stuff. Fr. Damien was an extraordinary individual and an ideal priest. The film portrays this with great respect as it does with the Catholic Church in general – another rarity these days! There are at least a dozen scenes that stand out as illustrations of true virtue in practice and from which we can draw inspiration to improve our own characters. This is a beautiful film in every sense and will remain in my top 10 list of all time great movies.

Not your typical Cinderella story…

What do you get when you mix a bit of fairy tale-Cinderella world with some Shrek, throw in some Princess Bride, a little bit of Disney’s Robin Hood (see Hester the snake), along with a little singing, and some random modern-day references thrown in for good measure? You get Ella Enchanted, Miramax’s newest gem of a film, narrated by Eric Idle and starring the lovely Anne Hathaway and the dreamy Hugh Dancy.

Ella of Frell (Anne Hathaway) has a gift. Er, I mean, a curse. A gift, a curse, it all depends on how you look at it: no matter what you tell Ella to do, she must obey. A rather capricious fairy named Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox) gave baby Ella the “gift of obedience”: anything spoken to Ella as a command, she must automatically do. Fast forward a few years: Ella is now a young lady, and no one except her aunt Mandy (Minnie Driver) knows about this gift/curse. Not even her best friend and fellow civil rights activist Arieda (played by “Bend It Like Beckham’s” Parminder K. Nagra) is aware of her “problem.” When her father brings home a wicked new stepmother (Joanna Lumley) and two evil stepsisters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Higham), Ella must deal with their demanding ways, hopefully without giving away her secret!

Her stepsister Hattie is the very obsessive and very active president of the Prince Charmont fan club! She and her friends go absolutely ga-ga, every time they even think of the hunky prince (much less when they see him). Prince “Char” (Hugh Dancy) as they lovingly call him, is the heir apparent to the throne currently held for him by his evil uncle Edgar (Cary Elwes). The coronation day coming soon, and the kingdom in a bit of upheavel due to the heavy handed rule of Edgar, ogres, giants, and elves alike are all ready for a change! But will everyone accept Prince Charmont as their new king?

One magical day when Ella and Prince Charmont cross paths, it is love at first sight for Prince Char. But the feisty and proud Ella is not so quick to fall for the prince; she is sure he is as unfeeling and uncaring as his uncle is. And since Ella actively fights for ogres’ rights, along with any other magical creature in her kingdom (giants, elves, etc.), she wants nothing to do with the handsome Char. But when their paths keep crossing again and again…what’s a girl to do!?!

And so Ella of Frell sets out to find her fairy godmother Lucinda, to ask her to take back her “gift” of obedience, armed with Mandy’s boyfriend book named Benny (who can picture anyone, anywhere) and elf pal Slannen, they encounter much along the way (including Prince Char!). They reach the land of the giants only to discover that Lucinda has already left, and Ella is forced by her obedience gift to stay and sing for the giants (her rendition of “Someone to Love,” is entertaining and very well done!). But when Ella is finally commanded to do something that tests her very will…can she find Lucinda in time? Will she end up doing something she will forever regret?

Content: This film had very little objectionable content: there were a few general references that would be above most children’s heads, very little language (a few words), and only some mild violence. Given a PG rating: “For some crude language and violence.” A young girl (with some help) defeats ogres and fights various magical creatures, giants are shown slaving in a field, someone is “poisoned,” and a giant falls in love with an elf.

A high energy family-friendly film that reminds you again, why every girl waits for her prince and wishes for that happily ever after (but has some serious fun in the process!). The modern day references did not detract from the story at all, but added a bit of fun and light-hearted teasing to an entertaining movie. I laughed and laughed at the sometimes silly and sometimes serious jokes that poked fun at various modern day places and things. One particular moment that caused a huge laugh: Ella and Arieda are leaving a building and travel down a “medieval escalator” (a wooden set of moving stairs, with a giant wheel turned by servants). From “Medieval Teen” magazine and trips to “Ye Olde Shopping Mall, to an elf who wants to be a lawyer and giants who love to sing, from the “VI Seasons” hotel and “Frell Community College,” this energetic and colorful film will leave you laughing, and feeling light and free.

I just wanted to post a review to let anyone who has seen this movie know that it should NOT be used to judge the book. I think I read somewhere that the author was actually involved with putting together the screenplay, but if so, I cannot imagine WHY she permitted some of the modifications. I do understand that some “interpretation” was necessary, because the book was very “LITERARY” in the sense that some of parts could only be “read” and couldn’t be “acted out” in any interesting fashion (there are several exchanges of correspondence between Ella and the prince for example, and how boring is it to have characters reading letters aloud?).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ella Enchanted! Click Here

Granted, if you like this movie, that’s fine with me–it has lots of pretty actors and actresses, cutsey bits, with music and all that “glitzy” production kind of thing that looks good in a movie. But the book was a wonderful, enchanting, magic tale that was not even touched upon by this atrocity of a movie as far as that goes. I wouldn’t have paid a cent to watch this if I had realized the main story had been buried beneath so much nonsense and Hollywood style. I LOVED THE BOOK AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING IT AS A FINE RETELLING OF THE CINDERELLA STORY.

And if you are looking for a mildly entertaining but pointless movie to watch, and do not expect it to reflect the magic and beauty of the original story, it’s fine.

It is probably inevitable that American audiences will compare “Mibu gishi den” (”When the Last Sword is Drawn”) with “The Last Samurai,” in that both films deal the Meiji restoration. This is also a similarity between the two in that this 2003 Japanese film from director Yojiro Takita (”Komikku zasshi nanka iranai,” “Onmyoji”) also is concerned with a character learning the true meaning of being a samurai. The difference is that instead of an American mercenary played by Tom Cruise it is a city samurai, Hajime Saito (Koichi Sato), who learns much from Kanichiro Yoshimura (Kiichi Nakai), who he dismisses at first meeting as a “country” samurai.

Buy,Download, Or Stream When the Last Sword Is Drawn! Click Here

The story here is told mostly in flashback from the perspective of 1899 when Saito, now an old man, brings his ailing grandson to see a doctor. In the home of the doctor there is an old photograph of a samurai that Saito recognizes, and the memories come flooding back to both the old man in the doctor (only the viewer is privy to both). The two samurai first met during the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, as clans were forced to choose between obedience to the Shogun, who wanted to maintain the old ways, and the Emperor, who favored opening Japan to the rest of the world and modernizing the country. The group to which Saito belong remained loyal to the Shogun, which dooms them as the troops of the Emperor take control of the country.

The civil war is creating a time of famine and poverty in Japan, so Yoshimura has left not only his clan but also his wife and children behind to find work so that he can send money home to his family. Since he is a mercenary Saito and the other samurai see Yoshimura as being dishonorable. When Yoshimura talks with love of the land from which he came, Saito, who cannot conceive of being loyal to a place rather than to a man, decides to kill Yoshimura. But the “country” samurai is too good with a sword and believes that Saito’s attack is just a test. However, the key difference between the two is clearly established: Saito is alive because no one has killed him, while Yoshimura kills because he wants to stay alive.

Buy,Download, Or Stream When the Last Sword Is Drawn! Click Here

It is clear that Yoshimura represents for Takita the personification code of Bushido. Time and time again my Western sensibilities intruded into this film because with his great love for his family and the land from which he comes, I kept expecting Yoshimura to simply go home, but eventually got it through my thick skull that the point here is that he cannot go home, for several reasons. Despite the brief battle and swordplay sequences, “Mibu gishi den” is really a character study and like Saito we come to recognize the true value of the strange samurai from the country, especially when the doctor finishes the tale and provide a sense of closure for the both old man and the viewing audience.

In the 2004 Awards of the Japanese Academy, “Mibu gishi den” won Best Picture with Nakai picking up the awards for Best Actor and Sato for Best Supporting Actor. It was nominated for eight other awards, but apparently in Japan winning the Best Picture award does not carry over into a lot of technical categories. However, I would certainly argue that it is Nakai’s performance that elevates this film above the high levels of sentimentality that take up almost the entire final act. Quite simply his performance was what made me round up in the final analysis on this decidedly different samurai film.

This was the closing film at the 2002 Tokyo International Film Festical. Yoshimura Kanichiro, “the wolf of Mibu”, who toils through the end of the Shogunate era armed only with his sense of justice.

I have owned this movie for some time now and never tire of watching it again to pick out details of the story I had missed before. I find it has a rich mixture of sights and sounds that make it a story worth repeating. The characters are believeable and full of emotion. The action is well played. I’ve found it to be a keeper.

Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) is a lonely guy. Carl is a loan officer who is real low on life and down in the dumps because of a break up. One day Carl heeds the advice of an old friend and goes to a self-help seminar. The motto “Yes is the new no!” If the movie’s title is any indicator, you know what happens for the rest of the film. He says yes to anything and everything, even an extremely generous granny.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yes Man! Click Here

Not very often a comedy comes out with a message worth listening to. “Yes Man” provides just that and exposes the audience to the powers of positive thinking. The movie itself is a montage of Carl saying yes to everything; Carl says yes to learning to speak Korean, Carl says yes to costume party invites from his boss, Carl says yes to flying lessons, and yes to a bar fight, which was one of the funniest scenes of Carl’s acceptance journey. Eventually, Carl’s yes-ery leads to a new love interest named Allison (Zooey Deschanel) and a promotion at work. And despite all the positive outcomes, Carl learns that saying yes doesn’t always necessarily take you in the right direction.

“Yes Man” is a lot of fun to watch. Carrey is on top of his game and is still as funny as always. To answer any questions: Yes the movie is funny. Yes it’s worth going to see. And yes you’ll enjoy it.

I went to “Yes Man” with my 15 year old daughter just to pass the time, not expecting much based upon Jim Carrey’s latest failures. My daughter really enjoyed the movie and I was glad that I went. The movie is predictable, but still very entertaining. If you are a JC fan, then don’t pass this one up. I would highly recommend buying the soundtrack for the movie as well, it is very well done except for the glaring omission of the Journey song from the movie climax. See the movie, buy the soundtrack, you will be pleased.

He’s seems very comfortable and at home in this somewhat fictious account of the life of boxer James Corbett. Flynn is cocky and charming as usual in this story of how Corbett rose from being a bank teller to world champion. A beautiful and sassy Alexis Smith is along as the love interest, while Alan Hale is his very Irish father, William Frawley his manager, Jack Carson his best buddy, and Ward Bond his biggest rival. Everyone is very good and appears to be having a great time. The boxing sequences are well staged by director Raoul Walsh, and generous doses of humour are found throughout. It teeters on corny at times, but it is all played with such energy and obvious enjoyment, the corny moments can be overlooked. As usual for most Warner Bros biopics, I’m sure it takes many liberties with the truth, but it doesn’t matter. The film is very entertaining in its presentation of his life and how boxing evolved.

Errol Flynn is largely forgotten today by the average movie goer which is a shame since he was a genuine superstar of his time. His dazzling good looks and charm combined with a rakish off screen behavior catipulted him to quick success and gave fuel to detractors who claimed there was little talent behind the perfectly chisled facade.

In reality Flynn was a largely underrated actor shackled to many less than stellar productions by the studio’s type casting. His talent for light comedy shows through brilliantly in Gentleman Jim this early forties biopic of Heavyweight Champion James J. Corbett. The movie is factual fluff when it comes to Corbett’s personal life, but largely true to history concering his pugilistic efforts. Corbett did fight on barges and in rich sporting clubs to circumvent the public ban on the sport at the end of the nineteenth century.

Flynn’s considerable atheticism adds further creedence to his excellent portrayl of the turn of the century fighter. An accomplished amateur boxer in his youth, Fylnn was widely regarded as the best tennis player in Hollywood and his fluid ring movmenents are a welcome relief to the bumbling screen fight efforts of Gable, Tracy and Cagney. The reserved post fight meeting of the defeated Sullivan, well

played by Ward Bond and a restrained Flynn as his conquerer, is quite touching and serves as further evidence of Flynn’s acting skills.

Watching Gentleman Jim is great and entertaining fun and can only make one wish Flynn was given more oppurtunities to display a largely untapped talent.

As a co-owner of a daycare, and being male, I was really interested in catching this movie.

First of all, the kids are really cute. Especially the kid who plays Ben, Eddie Murphy’s “son”. But the entire cast of kids did a fantastic job.

I love Eddie Murphy so I wasn’t surprised to be entertained by his antics (he has the best facial expressions in everything he does, very likeable). But I also wanted to applaud Steve Zhan who did fantastic as a Star Trek geek. I guess he stood out for me because he reminded me so much of myself especially when around fellow Trekkies.

As a daycare provider, I did find some things entertaining. I’ve heard the horror stories from parents looking for a daycare, so the scene of Ben’s parents trying to find a new daycare was quite funny. The scenes of the house being destroyed… oh, there is no way around that with a group of kids. You’ve got the inspector who we need to deal with on a regular basis (of course, we had to pass inspection BEFORE opening unlike this movie, but it was fun to see the interaction with the inspector).

One of the things that made me go, “yeah right” was the competition aspec. No, I’m sorry, Day Care is not a cut-throat business. Actually, there is a lot of business to go around and there seems to be no dominate player that nobody can raise a candle to. That idea was very laughable to me, and I’m sure to anybody else who catches this movie. But the plot would be thin without this aspect, so I can somewhat understand. But I should deduct a star for the very idea…

…But I won’t, and only because of the one thing I appreciate most about this movie. Other than some brief questionable parts, this was a fairly clean movie that you can feel comfortable having the entire family watch. Bravo for making a family movie, more need to be made. It was nice to watch a movie and not grimace or have to turn it off because I’m sitting next to my son. Hopefully some of the Hollywood Execs take note as the success of this movie.

I would recommend this to anybody.

My friend brought this over for us to watch and my husband gave me the “look” as he slowly settled down to watch.
I could hear him groan, “Oh no! How long is this movie? It’s about what?”, but by the end of the showing even he was smiling.
Eddie Murphy does an excellent job of playing Charlie, a man who lost his job when his ‘Veggie-O” cereal line did not make the production line. After being dismissed he and his friend Phil decide they will open a Day Care Center! Ah…….now the fun begins as the Dad’s take on the everyday antics of the little ones and the wrath of one Mrs. Harridan, owner of a more ‘uptown’ Day Care Center that seems to be losing it’s student to “Daddy Day Care.”Angelica Huston, who plays the part of Mrs. Harridan, does an outstanding job as the villian in this flick.
There were quite a few chuckles from many scenes in this movie and the children were absolutely adorable! Reminded me a little of the movie “Three Men and A Baby”, only this was three men and 14 babies and more! I enjoyed this movie, it was clean, fun and left you with a good feeling! Good job to all the actors, even the little ones!

Well, this review is a little premature; I’ve seen all the original episodes with subtitles, but my “super-saver shipping” pre-order is taking over a week to arrive. Amazon buyer beware, I guess. That said, I have the whole collection to date and will say that in the 48 ADV episodes I have seen, the voice-acting has been adequate to good, the commentaries have been poor to great (and tending to be better on the later disks), and the extras have been generally phenominal.

Short review: The highlights of this set are the Red Impulse (RI) episodes (51-54) which reveal RI’s connection to Ken, and serve to fuel Ken with rage for the next 50 episodes. This also marks a turning point in the entire series, as the focus tends more toward Joe (G-2), since he is the more complex and interesting character. Jun befriends a man who may or may not be a member of Galactor’s “Black Birds” (evil counterparts of the science ninja team) in ep 56, and episodes 57 and 60 both take fairly well-thought out looks at redemption; 57 focuses on a Galactor sniper, while the protagonist in 60 actually becomes an honorary G-6.

The episodes:

49) The Camera Mecha Shutterkiller: A Jinpei episode, whichs highlights his determination. 3 stars.

50) The Dinosaur Skeleton Torakadon: The team travels to Inderia and uncovers a galactor plot when Ken notices a coin is actually a map. 3 stars… maybe…

51-54) The Rotation Mecha Kataroller, The Secret of the Red Impulse, Farewell Red Impulse, Gatchaman Burns with Rage: I don’t know if it’s the time (1970’s) or Japanese culture, but we see what Red Impulse was willing sacrifice in his quest to destroy Galactor, and the consquences his choices had on Ken. It made me finalize my decision that he’s a jerk, but one does have to respect his devotion to duty. Red Impulse’s sacrifices have series long ramifications for Ken, and explain Ken’s behavior in the later series (Gatch II and Gatch F), when Ken becomes the hot-tempered shoot-firster. Good stuff. Four stars.

55) Death Defying mini-submarine: Galactor has a punch of “pollution bombs”, Ken almost dies by these, and in the end the sea is saved by Galactor cleaning capsules. 2 stars. Sorry.

56) The embittered Bird Missle: The surprisingly under-used Black Birds are personalized with Koji, whom Jun develops a relationship with. The Black Birds are mean-motorscooters, and it’s great to get a glimpse of the man behind the mask. 5 stars.

57) The Evil White Sea: Gatchaman’s version of Shawshank Redemption, with Mike the sniper. 5 stars.

58) Mekabutta from Hell: Another episode of the series that’s good on it’s own, but more fascinating because of what it reveals about early 1970’s Japanese culture. The episode is about a potential energy source that won’t cause pollution, and we see Ken’s rage burn once again it. As a whole though, this series is about technology. The series proposes that technology is not inherently good or bad, but rather a tool. Galactor uses it for evil (Giant Turtle Mecha), while Gatchaman and the ISO use it for good. I can just see the creative staff dreaming up a world in which pollution can be eliminated, energy is limitless, and the standard of living is high enough for everyone to enjoy leasure time. As a country who imposed isolation on itself for over 100 years, they then rapidly “westernized” itself to a major military power who for a time conquered half the globe. A nation which had vowed death before dishonor found itself signing an unconditional surrender in Tokyo bay, and rapidly reorginized itself into one the most prosperous democracies in history. Just about all of this, was based on technology. Very interesting. Four star episode.

59) The Secret Mecha Factory: Where does Galactor build all those crazy mecha? Hmm… 3.5 stars.

60) Science ninja team G-6: A semi-amnesiatic Galactor helps the team to strike a blow back at Katse. 4 stars.

Sorry that I couldn’t wait to comment on the extras, but I hope SOMEBODY will.
