C’mon…it’s not rocket science and it’s not meant to be. After a week of having husbands and kids drive us crazy, my best friend and I ran away from home to see this and agreed we hadn’t laughed so hard in months! We laughed the whole way through. Mission accomplished…escapism at its best! Katherine Heigl is adorable in this and hey, for us harried mothers, just getting to watch Ed Burns and James Marsden for 90 minutes is worth the ticket (or DVD) price alone. They’re pretty yummy to watch! Leave the husband/boyfriends at home for this one and have a girls’ night out. Guys don’t get the humor in watching Jane hold her friends’ wedding dresses when they have to pee at their wedding receptions. Girls get it. The writing is witty with plenty of hilarious one-liners. Jane is everyone’s best friend and you’ll wish she was one of yours, too. This DVD will get added to my collection of predictable romantic comedies because it can hold its own with the best of them!

Jane (Katherine Heigl) has loved weddings ever since she was a little girl and helped set her cousin’s wedding to rights. She’s dreamed of the day she’ll walk down the aisle to see that delighted expression on her intended husband’s face.

George (Edward Burns) is the man Jane always hoped would be at the other end of the aisle. He’s Jane’s boss and an entrepreneur who made his millions selling the kind of outdoor equipment he loves to use. He’s a gentle soul, a selfless vegetarian who loves dogs and serves as a Big Brother to a great Hispanic kid named Pedro.

Jane’s getting practice for that big day. So far, she’s been a bridesmaid at 27 weddings. That’s 27 dresses in her apartment front closet–none she will ever wear again…well, none anyone should have had to wear in the first place.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 27 Dresses! Click Here

Enter Tess (Malin Akeman), Jane’s baby sister. She and George fall in love at first sight when Tess comes for a 2-week sisterly visit. Of course, George proposes and Tess accepts. But, Tess isn’t quite what she’s leading George to believe. She doesn’t like dogs. She eats meat, and she’s turning George’s little brother into her personal cleaning service.

And Jane–who is both jealous of her little sister and concerned about the lies Tess is telling to ‘get her man’ has to put the wedding together. Add to that the complication of Kevin (James Marsden), the bridal column journalist, who is following both Jane’s career as a bridesmaid and amateur wedding planner and Tess’s wedding.

“27 Dresses” is a heartwarming and funny film that’s both a good date movie and suitable for pre-teens. In my opinion, Ms. Heigl is showing versatility as an actress playing the sweet romantic heroine in “27 Dresses” and the hapless accidental mother in “Knocked up.” She’s steering a course similar to Johnny Depp’s, in that she’s selecting a variety of parts that won’t leave her typecast.

In a way, I’m quite glad that every attempt to remake this movie has failed to materialize; were Universal to remake it now, it would be a neo-slasher crap fest laced with nothing but screaming teenagers and a totally unsympathetic gore factory of a monster. And while there are purists out there who may claim that the Gill Man doesn’t really belong in the company of the other clssic Universal Monsters, the truth is that “The Creature From The Black Lagoon” IS the last great Universal monster movie. What’s more, its sequels actually aren’t as bad as others may want you to believe, particularly since they do accomplish the rare task of telling a different story in each entry – more than the “Jaws” sequels could manage – and as the central sympathetic character of each piece, the Creature himself does show significant character development over the course of three movies without degenerating into the high-camp approach that has since destroyed the likes of Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger.

DISC ONE:

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Buy,Download, Or Stream Creature from the Black Lagoon – The Legacy Collection! Click Here

Where better to start than the beginning? You probably know the drill: a group of scientists – one of whom happens to look particularly gorgeous in a white bathing suit – putters down the Amazon in search of the fossils of a ‘missing link’ between man and fish, only to find the living truth hiding out in a forgotten tributary. And it becomes clear that the Gill Man wants only two things: female companionship and solitude from everybody else. The plot pretty standard sci-fi fare for the 1950s (and earlier when you consider the first two movies are naught but a submerged remake of ‘King Kong’, but more on that later), but it’s the execution of it that sets CFTBL above all other contenders of the era.

Under the expert direction of Jack Arnold, the cast is up to their task – as Kay Lawrence, Julia (Julie) Adams does sufficient acting to convince us she could have some scientific prowess despite her excellent screaming ability and great legs; Richard Carlson does another capable job of playing a scientist-hero type – something he was known for in ’50s sci-fi – as Kay’s fiance David Reed; Richard Denning makes a great antagonistic figure in the form of David and Kay’s boss Mark Williams; and Nestor Paiva provides comic relief as Lucas, the eccentric captain of the RITA. Then, of course, there’s the ’star’, or rather both of him: Ben Chapman is the man inside the monster suit – with the slickest and most iconic monster design of the ’50s – while topside, with Ricou Browning playing the Gill Man beneath the waves, a role he would reprise for the two sequels.

Filled with equal measures of emotional resonance, textbook dialogue and good old-fashioned shivers – accompanied by one of the most surprisingly functional ‘patchwork’ music scores ever produced – CFTBL is unquestionably the best monster movie of the ’50s, and one of the best sci-fi movies of that time.

BONUS FEATURES

Considering how few who were involved in making this movies are still around today, Universal does an impressive job assembling its resources for the bonus features:

* The documentary “Back To The Black Lagoon”, by film historian and Universal monster aficionado David Skal, provides some intriguing insights into the making of the Gill Man trilogy, including such revelations as:

- The studio’s original vision for the look of the Gill Man, and what they intended to do with that look after it was scrapped.

- The real makers of the Gill Man – including concept artist Milicent Patrick and sculptors Chris Mueller and Jack Keban.

- Comical anecdotes of on-set mishaps involving an eyebrow-raising trade-paper photo and a man-eating sea turtle.

- The principle behind the 3-D in which the first two movies were filmed, and the truth behind why the fad faded so quickly.

- Discussion about subtexts and implications in the films, and the progression of the Gill Man as a character.

* Audio commentary by film historian Tom Weaver, whose laborious dialogue drowns out the rest of the movie yet still provides ever more tantalizing details into the making of the films – as he himself admits early on, he does have much more to say and short running times to do it in. Through these commentaries you learn such interesting little tidbits as what role Orson Welles played in the genesis of the Gill Man, and how the first two Gill Man movies resemble a certain classic movie about a giant ape.

* Theatrical trailers for the first film, which when watched back-to-back, as they’re presented, can get a little tiresome since most of the trailers contain the same rehashed footage and voiceover.

DISC TWO:

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE

A year has passed, and some more pretty confident scientists decide to capture the Gill Man and bring him back to civilization and put him on display in a marine life park, where he’s observed by a beautiful blond icthyologist. I don’t think I need to explain the rest.

Needless to say, with a plot like that, you can safely assume none of the characters from the original film are going to make any return appearances, except for, of course, the comic relief, Nestor Paiva, and then for a cameo. Still, John Agar as professor Clete Ferguson and Lori Nelson as icthyologist Helen Dobson do make a cute scientist couple, with John Bromfield playing the obligatory macho shark-wrangler type/monster fodder Joseph Hayes. And there are two other very notable cameos – one a topside appearance by Ricou Browning as a lab tech, the other a comical appearance by a young Clint Eastwood. Tom Hennessey is the topside Gill Man this outing, with Browning back in the suit for underwater shots.

Like most sequels, ROTC has its flaws, to be sure – one scene involves some visibly-imperfect wire work for one of the Gill Man’s victims, and for some reason the sculptors gave the classic Gill Man design a pair of ping-pong-ball monster eyes, possibly for visibility purposes for the actors. But given the act it had to follow, ROTC is actually pretty worthwhile…especially when you consider that this DID get remade by Universal, sort of, as “Jaws 3″. You figure out which one you’d rather watch.

THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US

Fitting that for the last Gill Man movie, the Gill Man be forcibly removed from the undersea environment he’s at home in – this time by being doused in kerosene and flames by the dunderheaded assistant of obsessive scientist William Barton (Jeff Morrow), who’s determined to reshape the Gill Man into a land-lubber – we never do find out why – just as much as he’s determined to make a complete subordinate out of his disillusioned child-bride wife Marcia (Leigh Snowden). Once again, a nobler scientific mind enters the equation, Tom Morgan (Rex Reason), and his rescue of the Gill Man from certain death, combined with the Gill Man’s affinity for the opposite sex regardless of species, prove advantageous for Tom and Marcia when Dr. Barton begins eyeing those eyeing his wife with murder on his mind.

A lot of ‘fans’ don’t like this movie, but I do. It solidifies the two overall themes of the Gill Man movies – that humankind is its own worst enemy, and that the Gill Man must deal with a world in which he doesn’t belong. The chemistry between the human characters closely resembles that of the first film – one scientific philosophy that suggests we could benefit spiritually from what we learn, whereas another takes the path of benefitting materially from knowledge – and surprisingly, this time out the beast doesn’t make a beeline for the beauty, although he does acknowledge her – maybe the Gill Man is just tired of having his heart broken. The land-locked Gill Man is played by Don Megowan, with the character’s look radically altered as the result of being burned (a plot device re-used by Universal in “Jaws 2″ to cheesier effect) – heck, they even put him in clothes! And Ricou Browning does make one final appearance as the submerged Gill Man, with the aid of stock footage from the first two films.

All in all, TCWAU does tie up the story pretty effectively, if not necessarily happily – the last scene of the picture is pretty sad – and with any luck Universal won’t besmirch what is a good trilogy of films with a crappy trend-driven remake.

BONUS FEATURES

* More audio commentary by Tom Weaver, joined by Bob Burns for ROTC and TCWAU, and Lori Nelson on ROTC. It’s fun to hear shared stories among the group, particularly Ms. Nelson talking about her film career and Burns sharing stories from members of the production team, so these commentaries are a lot less tight than that of the first film.

* More theatrical trailers, which are always a hoot, particularly the trailer for ROTC.

The bottom line: if you like your monster-movie series waterlogged, don’t waste your time with the “Jaws” sequels. Universal got it right back in the ’50s, and this is the proof. Buy this set, by cracky!

As one of the six “Legacy” collections featuring the popular Universal monsters, the Creature set has some distinctly unique features. In one way, it’s the sparsest collection, with only three movies, but it also is the only one with commentaries on all the films. Perhaps more importantly is the nature of the Creature himself. While the other monsters are either purely supernatural (Dracula, the Wolf Man), purely man-made (Frankenstein’s monster, the Invisible Man) or a combination of the two (the Mummy), only the Creature is a natural creature.

What also stands out in the Creature movies is that humanity in general comes off as the bad guys and the Creature is the most sympathetic figure. Acting in a generally defensive manner, the Creature is subjected to greater and greater torments. He actually is similar in this fashion to King Kong (which is not surprising, since the first two movies, when combined, are essentially remakes of that giant ape classic).

As is typically the case, the first movie – The Creature from the Black Lagoon – is the best in the bunch. Several scientists – as well as the essential female love interest – go to South America in search of the bones of a legendary fish-man, only to find a living one instead. The Creature develops an interest in the woman even as it wages war with the intruders in its Black Lagoon, leading to several deaths before the final confrontation.

In Revenge of the Creature, the Creature is captured and brought to a marine amusement park, where it is chained up, studied and displayed for the masses. (In both this movie and the third one, there is a lot of confusion between salt-water and fresh water life, with the Creature forced to alternate between the two.) A la King Kong, eventually, he breaks free and goes on a rampage. While this film is most noted for the screen debut of Clint Eastwood, this is actually only of minor significance: Eastwood is in the movie for only a minute, playing a very atypical role as an inept lab assistant.

In the third movie – The Creature Walks Among Us – the Creature is captured again but seriously burned in the process. The process to save him forces him to be a land creature, and this once mighty creature of the Amazon is forced to live in the San Francisco Bay area, unable to be master of the water anymore.

The 1950s were not great years in science fiction/horror film making, but the Creature movies, despite their flaws, are some of the best of the era, with a decent costume for the monster and reasonably good effects. Just as it was influenced by King Kong, you can see the clear influence these movies had on others, in particular, Jaws. For Universal, this would be the last of their iconic monsters, and unlike the others, it has not been subject to any remakes. With decent commentaries and other features, this is a fun set, a solid four star collection that will please fans of classic monster movies.

Bandai continues their wonderful pattern of making their less popular series available in one complete set…in the “Don’t Leave Me Alone Daisy” DVD Collection. As DVDs go, this one is pretty no frills, but when you consider that in dollar per episode count, it’s one of the best deals in anime, it’s worth it.

The series itself is one of the most surreal anime series I have ever seen. It presents itself as a typical shojo anime series, but the undercurrents can be dark, edgy or just plain bizarre. Lighthearted jokes frequently have deep, awkward meanings and what would otherwise be serious themes are presented as essentially flippant.

That said, there’s something very compelling about the series. Much as with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt in “As Good As It Gets”, we see the main characters move together in spite of the fact that the main male character has very serious personality issues. A large part of the fascination with the series is over whether or not the heroine (Hitomi, or ‘Daisy’ as Tekno, the male lead insists on calling her) will ever (or will want to) see past the male lead’s flaws.

I, for one, recommend it. I’ve never seen another series quite like it given both it’s flaws and it’s strengths. Oh, and one more thing: I guarantee you that by the end of the third episode, the ending theme with be stuck in your head for a week.

This cartoon is not fairly judged, detractors are just too quick to call Techno abusive. If you are this judgmental, you will not enjoy this great cartoon. You must set aside your feelings about Techno’s actions and put yourself in his shoes.

Techno is not the womanizer / molester that others make him out to be. He just has -never- had contact with human society. Techno was born in his grandfathers fallout shelter, who subsequently raised him, and told him never to leave. Sequestered in the shelter Techno grew up with science as his lifestyle. As a result, he has only a scientific state of mind. So the comedy and “abuse” come from his total lack of any social skills. All of Techno’s actions and treatment of Daisy (or X Yamakawa, for that matter) go to show just how much science dominates his life.

At the end of episode 5, as Mr. Solomon points out, Daisy slaps Techno for very obvious reasons. At this point, yes, you definitely should feel more pity for Daisy than Techno because what Techno has done thus far is horrible! But the cartoon would be meaningless without Techno’s so-called “abuse”. You can compare Melvin from the U.S. released movie “As Good as it Gets” to Techno and you will see what I’m talking about. Neither Melvin nor Techno are seeking to abuse or harm or mistreat their women, they’re just love sick and don’t know how to get their affection.

Haunted Junction, which I think is made by the same people, is much less “controversial” while still keeping great humor and a similar plot. Although you may say you want a normal life or a normal job or a normal boyfriend, you wouldn’t actually ever want it. You are sure to enjoy Haunted Junction, even if you are turned off by Don’t Leave Me Alone Daisy.

Now on the technical side this DVD set is superb. All twelve episodes of Don’t Leave Me Alone Daisy are presented on two DVD-9 (dual layer DVDs) discs, six episodes per disc, in a double Amaray keepcase, in Japanese only with English subtitles (Dolby Digital 2.0 at 192k). I have no problems with the audio and the video quality is excellent. The menus are static backgrounds and are fast to access. There are five chapter stops per episode (opening, part a, part b, ending, preview), this is perfect for me. The scene select menu while visually appealing, I find is cumbersome to navigate. A menu similar to Haunted Junction’s would have been better, in my opinion. The root menu has a nice extra though, it plays the entire TV edit of the opening and closing songs. The first DVD plays ending song and the second dvd plays the opening song.

This release is made even better by the fact that all twelve (12) episodes of this cartoon cost little more than three or four episodes of other cartoons. FYI, Haunted Junction was released in the same manner. Add both cartoons to your collection, for sure!

I will forego writing much on the main film itself, because Lance did a very nice job in doing so and there is little I could add. I do want to touch on the DVD itself though, because that so often is looked at as a complete package when reviews are written here (which is a shame, since this SHOULD be a review of the DVD and not just the movie). All the more so with Something Weird Video, the leader of DVD extras.

The one thing I will say of the film is that it is a deftly stitched patchwork of clips from Mansfield’s life, narrated by a “voice-alike”. It is mainly a film following Jayne on vacations around the world, and in asmuch it almost seems like it was shot all at once for the express purpose of making this film (and, nothing is ever said that it wasn’t, nor does the narrator let on that she is someone else other than Jayne). The only unsettling aspect of the film is the ending, which is an unexpected and quick cut to her death in the car crash. Narration is taken over by a man at this point, and the tempo of the film, which had been titulating and vapid to this point, is now made much too heavy.

Ok, to the bonuses! Various trailers of long-forgotten films are included as on any SWV DVD, and the company does well in using ones that most directly relate to Mansfield movie (they must have 1,000s of trailers for them to match so nicely on each DVD). A second full-length, 90 minute film called “Labyrinth of Sex” is present, and is really not bad. It is mainly narrated by a doctor that goes on about why sexual deviances arise in individuals, and where they lead. This movie borders on exploitation, being over-the-top, as well as being grounded in truth. My guess is that the movie was pure propoganda at it’s time of release and was meant to be looked at as pure truth, it now shows it’s obviouscampy quality. Whatever the case, it is entertaining.

A small, pointless short film called “Parisian Rendezvous!” is on the DVD as well, but is so without merit I will pass on further comment.

Last item on the DVD in many ways COULD be the best thing on the disc, and argueably the best feature in the entire SMV catalogue: a reported first film of Marilyn Monroe called “The Apple-Knockers and the Coke”. The roughly 7 minute film had been lifted from a negative and released on this appropriate “dumb blonde” DVD. SMV though states on the back of the cover that it MAY not be Monroe, but it certainly does appear to be her. The actress in question has wavy brown hair and a smile almost without a doubt making this Monroe. There is likely no way to verify this “home movie”’s date or if it even really is Marilyn, so even if it could be agreed to be her, it likely never could be stated in print. Ah, as forwhat she is doing….it is pretty much her in a bikini in a very small stage setting, the base of a fake tree. As we move through the film, the actress eats and apple and drinks a Coke, slowly undressing as she goes. Most of the time she is topless, but eventually she strips completely and shows her pubic hairs.

Almost any of the SMV DVDs is going to appeal to a very small following, but this is still one of their better DVDs and definitely one of their best for archival biographical information.

This is an unusual disk in that the contents are not really of the same theme.

First we have the Wild World of Jayne Mansfield. Jayne was a very intelligent beauty who excelled at playing the dumb blond. This film shows Jayne touring Europe after her nude Playboy appearance. But just when you get used to seeing things through her eyes, the film switches scope as we reach the point of her death in a car crash. The film then becomes a retrospective showing her widower, children, and her mansion. The film really ends on a rather sad note.

The second film is The Labyrinth of Sex, a supposed documentary on sexual deviation. This is more a collection of vignettes with a doctor lecturing between them. There is an operating room scene that is not for the squeamish. All in all the film seemed like something that was done just because it could be.

Parisian Rendezvous is one of the short films included on the disk. Two lovers circle the glob in opposite directions rushing to be back in each other’s arms. This film has some of the sadness of the Jayne Mansfield film.

Finally we have The Apple Knockers and the Coke. This is a silent striptease short staring Marilyn Monroe. A fake apple tree, a bottle of coke and Marilyn’s attributes star in this multi-part short.

All in all an unusual assortment of films with each aiming at a different audience.

Thanks to the power of the internet, it’s rare that an anime title (in this case an OVA full-length feature film) should manage to take me by surprise. And yet when Funimation’s reissue of ADV Film’s Blade of the Phantom Master showed up unannounced; that’s exactly what happened. Based on a popular Korean manga, the anime incarnation has been around for several years now but hadn’t made my short list of must-have properties… until now.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Blade of the Phantom Master! Click Here

Coming in at a total runtime of 90 minutes, Blade of the Phantom Master occupies a single disc packaged in a standard-sized DVD case. The show wears an appropriate, if not slightly conservative TV MA (17+) rating due to some fairly graphic violent sequences (no nudity, sex, or particularly rough language however).

Language options are typical sub and dub meaning English and Japanese dialog tracks (presented in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound) and English subtitles beneath either if desired.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Blade of the Phantom Master! Click Here

Extras are quite robust and include a making of the video segment, storyboards, production sketches, interviews with the Japanese cast, original Japanese trailers and TV spots, clean opening and closing themes, and Funimation trailers.

The story begins in the scorching desert where lead character Munsu, an agent once obliged to a now-fallen kingdom (Jushin), meets up with a fellow traveler who actually ends up saving his life. It turns out Munsu has actually crossed paths with a young man on a camel who happens to be traveling to his homeland after having failed to acquire the skills necessary to save his girl from the clutches of a detested dictator.

Reluctant to get involved, Munsu is surprised to discover that the young man had put all of his faith in becoming the type of mystic warrior (an Amen Osa) that Munsu himself just so happens to be.

The ensuing story takes several twists and turns, many of which come on quickly and leave little time for viewer remorse. Within no time, Munsu finds himself on a wild escapade with a beautiful (and nearly perpetually-half-naked) bodyguard (or Sando in this mythos) named Chun Hyang.

The show can best be described as an action-piece with some truly awesome battle scenes that combine CGI techniques with cell animation nearly flawlessly. Beneath the beautiful visuals and quick-paced action lies a more tragic tale that works on so many subtle levels. Especially effective is the antihero tones associated with the lead character. While fighting for justice, he is commonly forced to resort to violence, manipulation, deceit, and trickery, yet in the end his undeniable sense of righteousness (and confidence) that prevails.

The title of this OVA hints toward Munsu’s true ability, which is to summon a phantom army that fight at his beckoning call (which in this case involves the revealing of his three-horsed medallion). The undead warriors are chillingly fantastic in appearance and animation- Think mustached masks straight out of V for Vendetta, with long-drooping jester hats, and statures of some 10-foot in height. When these guys appear, it’s on!

This coupled to Munsu’s penchant for blasting baddies with his firearms (pistols, rifles), and exploding long strings of dynamite, the formula for cool visuals is complete and the sound score backs up the eye-candy perfectly. Musical numbers are sweeping and dramatic but fall away to subtle tension with uncanny seamlessness.

Voice work is fairly spectacular in both the original Japanese dialog and the English dub. As most true anime fans will attest, the English dub usually falls short of the emotional range captured by the Japanese actor counterparts, but that’s simply not the case here. The emotion, conviction, and sound mix in the English revision are every bit as moving as the original, giving fans a true choice when they sit down to view the show.

My only complaint (and the only factor keeping this film from earning a perfect 5-star score) is the fact that the movie assumes that the viewer is up to speed on the mythos of the show (presumably through the ongoing manga) before even starting out. I don’t mean to suggest that the movie won’t make sense to said individuals (since I was one myself going in) but little things like the breathing condition that affects Munsu (like asthma) and requires a sort-of inhaler was the result of a spell placed upon him. Or that he is seeking vengeance on the man who killed his best friend (the king of Jushin); an act that ultimately led to the fall of the land, is mentioned but never fully explained either. These elements are not only incredibly interesting; they could have really shed some light on the characters’ motivations throughout.

I was forced to dig up these facts through online research after the film concluded since I was left wanting to know more about this spectacularly assembled story.

As it stands, this is pretty close to animated perfection and while it doesn’t seem likely that any more anime episodes of this tale will be made in the future, I can attest with confidence that after absorbing this film, you’ll wish they would reconsider!

Director Martin Scorsese (who spearheaded its re-release) is a purist; he would not want to artificially “enhance” the picture at the risk of distorting Luis Bunuel’s original vision.

Second, this DVD is non-anamorphic for very good reason: Belle de Jour was photographed in 1.66:1 widescreen. 16:9 enhancement would actually have CUT OFF some of the picture at the top and bottom. People who complain about the quality of this DVD simply don’t know what they’re talking about.

As for the movie itself, Belle de Jour is one of the few films about eroticism that really gets it right – it knows that eroticism is in the mind, not the body. The always luminous Catherine Deneuve plays Severine – a woman whose life is at once picture-perfect and fundamentally empty. She is married to a good provider, the handsome but boring Pierre (Jean Sorel), and enjoys all the idle upper-middle class accouterments.

But something is wrong in this greeting-card perfect world. Severine seems to find erotic satisfaction only in the repressed desire to be humilated and used sexually. She escapes into waking dreams where she enjoys being whipped, soiled with mud, and bound to trees. This lurid fantasy life leads her to seek employment as a part-time prostitute – but only during the day, before her husband gets home.

Complications arise when her double life is discovered by her husband’s friend Henri Husson (Michel Piccoli), and when she finds herself the subject of a stalker – a dangerously obsessed customer named Marcel (Pierre Clementi), who also happens to be a violence-prone thief.

Though it sounds like fodder for a typical Hollywood “erotic thriller”, what develops from these elements is a psychological study that, for all its depths, appears to remain moot about just what makes the main character tick.

Central to the film is Deneuve’s work. Under Luis Bunuel’s precise, disciplined direction, she delivers a performance that is icy, opaque, and ultimately heartbeaking. Yes, she seems distant, and that is precisely the point: the much talked-about ending, by its very ambiguity, shocks us with the revelation that we’ve been fooled all along. Severine is not unreadable because she is hiding dark motivations. Rather, she is a dreamy, empty vessel; abused as a child (as we see in subtle flashbacks), and acting out of nothing more than instincts she can neither hope, nor care to understand. The lights are on and nobody’s home.

Her last, blissful smile as she enters one of the waking dream-states that pervade the film masks the hollowness of a human being squeezed dry of all her humanity by a life of denial, guilt, and empty materialism.

It’s an emotional sucker punch – a romantic banality that underscores with bitter irony what a sad, empty life Severine has, and the great damage that has been done to her. The tremendous harm that her own actions have caused by this point is just a tragic ricochet.

All in all, Belle de Jour is a haunting piece of classic cinema. It may be Bunuel’s masterpiece. It belongs in any serious movie fan’s collection.

“Belle de Jour” is generally considered to be director Luis Bunuel’s masterpiece; a surprisingly revealing and seemingly personal venture into the world of eroticism and its deviances. It’s a truly surrealistic exercise in ambiguity, fantasy, and reality. The line that separates them is blurred so much that the famously mysterious ending has had critics arguing for decades over its meaning.

The fantasy sequences are usually signalled by the sound of carriage bells, but by the end of the film the viewer is no longer able to differentiate between what is another one of Severine’s fantasies and what is reality. Even Bunuel admitted to not knowing himself. He said that “by the end, the real and imaginary fuse; for me they form the same thing.”

The gorgeous Catherine Deneuve, resplendent in her icy prime, portrays Severine Sevigny, the middle-class wife of Pierre, a doctor. She is frigid, virginal, yet seemingly happy enough in her bourgeoisie life and its trappings. However, upon hearing about a local clandestine brothel from a friend, she pays a visit to the madame, and becomes a prostitute, going by the name of “Belle de Jour”, as she can only work in the afternoons. She apparently fully realizes and enjoys her sexuality, despite her guilty conscience, exclaiming that she “can’t help it”. She certainly doesn’t need the money. She’s bored with her life and her marriage, needing a “firm hand” to lead her; a need which the madame, Anais, who is obviously attracted to her, almost immediately recognizes. Her sweet and conventional husband is unaware, treating her much like a child, and the audience cannot help but believe that even if he knew of her true nature, he would not understand or empathize. She keeps her two worlds neatly separate until a patron of hers (whom she herself enjoys) becomes obsessed with her, and all is threatened.

That Alfred Hithcock in particular admired this film comes as no surprise to me; Deneuve would have been the perfect Hitchcock heroine: an icy blonde who becomes “a whore in the bedroom”, as Hitchock was fond of saying he preferred in his leading ladies. But this remark is not meant to simplfy the story, its telling, or Deneuve’s remarkable performance, which is what truly draws the viewer into the film.

“Belle de Jour” was Bunuel’s first foray into the use of color, and he employed it to great effect. From the fall colors displayed in the landscape scenes, to the subtle shades in Deneuve’s clothing, the contrasts are set. While the world around her explodes in glorious hues, Deneuve’s character is defined by her couture, if staid, wardrobe of tan, black, and white.

“Belle de Jour” was unreleased for many years due to copyright problems, but finally re-released in 1995 through the efforts of director Martin Scorcese, and released on DVD in 2003. I’ve watched it twice in the past week and am still at a loss to describe it very well; suffice to say that I am in awe. It’s an amazingly erotic film without any explicitness, and one that I expect hasn’t lost any of its effect over the years. As the subject matter is handled very tactfully and without any actual sex scenes; a great deal is left to the viewer’s imagination – which only serves the heighten the mysteries inherent at every turn in the film. The viewer is however drawn into the sense of feeling to be a voyeur into Severine’s secret life; the careful choreography of scenes and camera angles contribute to the uncomfortable sense of intrusion by us, the viewers.

There are many sub-stories and small mysteries in the film; for instance one of the most widely debated upon by critics is the mystery of “what is in the Asian client’s little box?” that he presents first to one prostitute, who quickly refuses, then to Severine, who tentatively agrees. All the audience know is that it’s something with a insect-like noise, and when the client leaves, Severine is sprawled face-down upon the bed, the sheets thrown about, and obviously pleased with whatever took place in the interim.

“Belle de Jour” was awarded the Golden Lion at the 1967 Venice Film Festival, as well as the award for Best Foreign Film in 1968 from the New York Film Critics Circle.

Interesting side notes: Bunuel himself had a shoe fetish, which helps explain the numerous shots of Deneuve’s beautifully clad feet throughout the film, and the fact that every time she goes shopping, she buys shoes. He also appears in the film in a cameo as a cafe patron, and in another scene his hands are shown loading a gun.

I love all the GERRY ANDERSON ‘SUPERMARIONATION’ series BUT this is my favorite! Why? Distinct and complete character development! While THUNDERBIRDS and CAPTAIN SCARLET focus more on the ships and gadgets….STINGRAY focuses more on TROY TEMPEST, ATLANTA, MARINA, PHONES, COMANDER SHORE, TITAN, X2-0, etc. I have the BRITISH version of the set and it does have many more extras that I wish they would release in the states…Guest appearances on BRITISH TV Shows, Bumper cards, Memorabillia, Commercials…not sure why they just can’t add this stuff on the A&E releases??? This is a GREAT series and the prints look EXCELLENT! Rick Goldschmidt RANKIN/BASS Historian

Clarification: After reviewing the set and then receiving the set…I Must applaud A&E for the brilliant 20 minute BEHIND-THE-SCENES special on the 5th disc! Finally…the puppeteers get to talk about their work and you actually get to see inside the puppet’s heads! Also on DISC 5, they did include the lost footage from the 40th Episode! BRAVO!

Brady fans rejoice! The entire series, all 5 seasons, of The Brady Bunch is finally available in one compact, shag-a-riffic DVD Collector Set.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Brady Bunch – The Complete Series! Click Here

Let me start off with a word of warning for anyone who has purchased any of the individual season sets: The first 20 discs that comprise all 5 seasons are the exact same discs that you will find inside the individual season sets; Same disc art, same previews, same discs period. The 21st disc, however, is the all-new “exclusive to this set” DVD of special features. On this disc, you’ll find the movies “The Brady 500″ (the pilot for the series “The Bradys”) and “A Very Brady Christmas” in addition to a 2-part episode of “The Brady Kids” cartoon. “The Brady 500″ runs 88 minutes, “A Very Brady Christmas” runs 94 minutes and each cartoon runs a little over 21 minutes. All together they total 3 hours 45 minutes of Brady wonderment, not available anywhere else. For the closing logo enthusiasts out there, you will be saddened to know that the original closing logos on both movies have been replaced by the current CBS Paramount logo. The cartoons do have their original Filmation and Paramount logos though, followed by the current CBS Paramount logo.

Now, the packaging… The Complete Series comes in a thin, clear outer box, with a small hole on the front so you can feel a bit of the “shag carpet” covering 3 sides of the inner, more sturdy box. Once you remove the clear outer shell, you’ll find that the inner “shag” box opens like a cigar box. The inside flap houses a booklet that slides in from the top. This booklet serves the same purpose that the slim cases for the individual seasons do, to list which episodes are on which discs. Everything is great up to this point, until you see how the discs themselves are packaged. All 21 discs are housed in what can only be described as an “expandable/collapsable file folder” style sleeve, which is held in place with a clear plastic lid (same material as the outer box). Basically, the disc holders are 21 small, flimsy “card stock” sleeves, glued together at the bottoms. Unfortunately, the glue used to hold these together is a very soft, gummy glue that left a sticky residue on a handful of my discs. Even worse, by housing the discs in sleeves, half of my discs arrived with light to medium scratches on them.

On the individual season sets, Paramount uses 2 slim cases, each holding 2 discs. Since the episode discs are the same in this set as in the individual seasons, I almost feel that it’s better to get them that way. But, individual seasons means no “special features” disc. Plus, this complete series set does come at quite the savings compared to purchasing the seasons individually.

So, the question you need to ask yourself is “How big of a Brady fan am I?” Is the extra disc worth 20 other possibly scratched, sticky discs? If you are a completist or collector, the answer should be a definite yes! If you’re a casual fan who owns any or all of the individual sets, it might be a firm maybe.

But, as for me, I’m glad I bought it.

This set is still much better than the original “Brady Bunch” season sets because you get the “Christmas Show” bonus show + tons of more bonuses and the price is only $89.99 for the WHOLE entire season of “The Brady Bunch”.. Who cares that the discs are made in mexico, the picture quality is supurb and the price is fantastic!!! I have no complaints about this set because it meets all of my needs and is a nice collectors set… Online at other websites this exact set sells for over $120.00 and on Amazon it is priced @ only $89.99 with FREE SHIPPING! The discs play just as well as the other “Brady Bunch” set and you will save a ton of money on this set and again the remastered picture quality is excellent. The shag carpet is not my favorite thing about the set and I don’t like the way the discs are housed in the case but all in all this is a fantastic set to own and a MUST HAVE for any “Brady Bunch” fan. I know a lot of fans that are selling there original sets on the auctions sites an opting for this one because of the BONUSES. Highly recommended!!!
