Waxwork and Waxwork 2 are very inovating horror films. Now we can enjoy both movies on one disk!!! Great “POPCORN” movies from the “AWESOME 80’s!!! I just purchased this dvd and Waxwork pt 1, is the UNRATED version… so your seeing all the blood and gore, especially in the Wereolf and the Vampire slayer scenes. Waxwork–UNRATED and Waxwork 2—RATED R. Hope this helped anyone. “Steak Tar Tar anyone?” ENJOY!!!!

Artisan does it again by releasing this great double feature DVD. If the original Waxowrk wasn’t good enough, you also get its awsome sequel. For those of you who haven’t see Waxwork, don’t be fooled into thinking this is going to be a totally serious scary as hell movie. I is actually very toungue in cheek and has many funny moments. In the wake of Re-Animator, there were many immitations on mixing humor and gore, and Waxwork is one of the better films to come out of the mix. The sequel is almost just as good as the original and portrays many cameos that you will recognize (Bruce Campbell and Drew Barrymore to name a few). Two very entertaining film a cheap price. Now te downside. Originally when Waxwork was released on VHS, it was released in two seperate verions: an R-Rated and an Unrated. Sadly, the R-Rated version is the one present on the DVD which makes me worried that the Unrated will never be released. Another complaint is the picture quality. Artisan needs to start remastering these things. All their double feature DVD’s are grainy. But that aside, don’t let those downsides stop you from purchasing this DVD, its well worth it.

I will always be a tremendous fan of the two part film version with Derek Jacobi and Sir Alec Guiness, now generally only found on used video tape. This wonderful new miniseries does however acquit itself very nicely. Shown earlier in the UK, the acting by Matthew Macfadyn (of Pride and Prejudice fame) captures the well-intentioned and kind hearted Arthur Clennam perfectly. Equally impressive is Claire Foy as the courageous and decent Little (Amy) Dorrit. Still the best may be the character portrayed by Tom Courtenay, William Dorrit, “the father of the Marshalsea” the famous debtors’ prison. The series is full of very strong supporting performances, it would take far too long to list the many wonderful actors and actresses who are found in every scene.

The show follows a very typical Dickens plot of slowly developing mysteries and strangely interwoven relationships. Little Dorrit was born inside a debtors’ prison and has lived her entire life working unendingly and without complaint to make her father’s decades long imprisonment there more bearable. She is the first child born there; this fact and his former stature as a gentleman gives him an informal social superiority inside that he enjoys and uses as possible to his personal benefit. The arrival in London of Arthur Clennam from China to share with his mother the news of his father’s death, pushes an already moving story into many surprising turns. Rich and poor, good and bad, people of all social circles find themselves pulled into confronting their changing fortunes. Some who find themselves well-off deal with their new situation far less well than those dealing with adversity.

Dickens is telling a story far too near to his own with the theme of these families forced to see many generations live behind prison walls for the want of a few pounds. The story is one of his strongest and this series tells it honestly and with an incredible strength of cast and script.

I only recently read Little Dorrit, and it is my new favorite Dickens novel. The story of Amy Dorrit, an honest girl born in debtor’s prison, is a wonderful tale full of ups and downs, trials and tribulations, death and romance. As with many Dickens books, it literally has a cast of thousands, and this production follows most of the storylines from the book quite faithfully. I just watched this on the internet, and I thought this version was sensitive to the material and did a good job of keeping the characters engaging and true while obviously having to shorten Dickens’ voluminous descriptions into shorter episodes. The story is a bit of a soap opera with plenty of bad luck and broken hearts lying around. However, it totally works for me. When I read the book, I actually couldn’t put it down and devoured it in a couple of days. This movie was the same way. I couldn’t stop watching it or wait until the next episode. At the end, I was sitting in front of my computer crying. It is just a lovely story, well-scripted, beautifully acted, and engaging throughout. I haven’t ordered my copy yet so I can’t speak to any issues with the actual dvd yet, and I will admit that I have thus far been unable to sit through the 1988 version. I want to like it since I’ve heard so many raves about it (and I adore Derek Jacobi–he’s my all time favorite Hamlet) but it moves very slowly and ploddingly to me, and I just lose interest. So I highly recommend this version if you like Dickens at all or if you like any of the actors because the cast (Matthew Macfadyen and Claire Foy especially) do a lovely job. UPDATE: I received my dvd from Amazon and am thrilled to have purchased it. I had seen it on the internet and on Masterpiece (I’m in the US) and the episodes on the dvd are a bit different from what was shown on PBS. The dvd set consists of 4 discs in a widescreen format with 14 episodes coming in at a whopping 452 minutes and includes an interesting “making of” feature with info. about Dickens himself as well as the film’s production. I’m pretty sure I saw a scene or two here that was missing on PBS, plus I got the widescreen format that I didn’t get on my tv. A word of caution: the episodes end in cliff-hangers that make it almost impossible to go to bed without watching “just one more episode.” My husband and I both love it and have already recommended it to several people we know. This is a great movie that will make a superb addition to your home dvd library.

“A Snoodles Tale” is a definite must see for everyone. It’s a wonderful story that conveys how much worth we have regardless of how others look at us. It’s great for kids and adults. I showed it to an adult friend, and she wept.

this story is a must-have for all families. the idea that the way the world sees us and the way our creator sees us are vastly different should be taught to every child. can also be a help to any adult who has issues with self-esteem. will bring tears to your eyes during the explanation phil vischer offers of his writing of this story. and the first story, dr. jiggle and mr. hyde is cute. this makes me glad larry didn’t quite make it to danish immersion camp!

Blood Simple is one of the all-time great independent films. As a devotee of this film it goes without saying that I know nearly every line of dialogue and every cut. Well… if you too are a fan , my advice to you is: PASS ON THIS EDITION! I was absolutely shocked to see that this film had been re-edited! And NOT for the better. In fact, this was not a new edit in the traditional sense (scene shifting; scene re-edits etc.). All they did with this version was to simply lop off lines from the existing original final cut! That’s right. They just shortened scenes, most often taking the form of the scene ins and outs (first and last lines in each scene). For instance, M.Emmet Walsh’s last line to Marty in the VW when he contracts Walsh. Or how about the humorous placing of Getz’s cigarette in the stuffed wild boars mouth at Marty’s house? Or the exchange between Samm-Art Williams and the redneck at the juke box. Those lines are now gone completely. And remember that version of The Monkee’s “I’m A Beliver” which was used in that scene? Its been dumped for a Four Tops tune. This is just a few in a long list of disturbing changes. As a film editor, I asked myself, what imporovements were made with these new cuts? The answer is a resounding, NONE!

My point is this. If you buy this DVD expecting the same old Blood Simple in a new, crisp DVD edition, you will be sorely disappointed. You will be constantly distracted by the jarring edits rather than being able to enjoy the film… Again, worthless.

Fortunately for everyone a decision was made to re-release Blood Simple in theaters. 16 years ago when it was in first run I was barely aware of it. There were so many good reviews of the film I decided to go catch it. Blood Simple was the best film I saw in 2000. Until now there has been no DVD available in the U.S. A very grainy poor quality pan and scan copy is being sold in the UK. It just isn’t an option to purchase a pan and scan with this movie. The Coen brothers gorgeous cinematography makes full use of the entire frame. It is a noir style film so much of the imagery is in darkened bars and at night. But the color and light in the movie is really beautiful. This film has deserved a good treatment and now with this Director’s cut it is finally getting one. One of the odd things about this Director’s cut is it is the same length as the original version. Footage has been taken out and not added. The missing time is made up with an introduction by the Coen Brothers explaining that the film has been re-edited to take advantage of new technological advances not available when the film was first shot. This is sort of a joke similar to the opening of Fargo where a title card states, “Based upon a true story”. Fargo is not based on a true story. They just thought it would be a better story if people thought it was true when they watched it. Ha Ha. Blood Simple’s re-edit was a simple edit to tighten up the pace which was sometimes a little slow in the original version.

Made for only two million dollars Blood Simple is a stunning achievement, all the more so because it was the Coen’s first film. Stylish photography plays with not just light and shadow as in most noir, but color as well. But what drives this film is suspense mistrust and double dealing. I smile when I occasionally spot a criticism of this film is “its almost too clever” and “too perfect”. Blood Simple is fantastic at its clever choreography of events and placement of objects in relation to the actors that really adds to the tension and excitement. If thats too clever then spare me the dumbed down version. I love it. The acting is quite good. Its most interesting to see Frances McDormand, looking much younger and quite pretty, was obviously talented even back then. Blood Simple is often very disturbing. Especially good is a creepy scene in a moonlit field involving two men a burlap sack and a shovel. The violence in this scene as in much of Blood Simple is largely psychological. It was interesting to discover from an Amazon customer from Germany that they have a high quality widescreen DVD available in his country. But while they can buy it and watch it, German law forbids export of films which contained violence. He offered to bring a copy in his suitcase as he happened to be visiting my city. We couldn’t work it out logistically but fortunately for the rest of you, you soon won’t have to go to such great lengths to get a copy.

You have to give the “House” production team credit. Your show has the “American Idol” lead-in and is often the highest-rated scripted drama on TV. However, instead of playing it safe with disease-of-the week plots, “House” swung for the fences several times: putting its main character in jail and threatening him with prison; ramping up the conflicts between all six of the main characters; and ending the year with a big cliffhanger that threatened to cut the main cast in half. Even when a given episode wasn’t advancing the progressive storyline, the writers attempted to push the envelope with several politically themed episodes.

Early in Season 3, the big storyline revolved around recurring guest star David Morse, a detective out to get House and his questionable supply of Vicodin. In previous years, lengthy story arcs were given to Chi McBride and Sela Ward: would House lose his job? would House get married? This year, the theme was: would House go to prison? Morse dominated his episodes by playing the rare character that wouldn’t back down to House. Although some media critics grew tired of the plot, which perhaps went on 2-3 episodes too long, the resolution was clever and allowed House to keep his dignity (and his job) without having to sacrifice… anything.

Several subplots emerged throughout the season, such as the romance between Drs. Chase and Cameron (first shown in season 2), and Dr. Foreman’s growing dissatisfaction with having House as his mentor. House’s fascination (or, some might say, obsession) with his boss, Dr. Cuddy, reached new levels. By the end of the season, House faced near mutiny from his underlings… and still didn’t seem all that bothered. Perhaps House was too busy counseling a patient to end his life, or faking cancer in order to get a supply of pain medications. Perhaps he was dodging the romantic advances of a teenager, or trading in his case for a wheelchair in order to recover his handicapped parking spot. The more outrageous the behavior, the better Hugh Laurie was in the role. He even upgraded his cane to a model decorated with stars.

Standout guest stars this season included John Larroquette as a man waking up from a decade-long coma, Joel Grey as an ailing doctor, Dave Matthews as a stunted piano prodigy, and the return of Charles S. Dutton as Foreman’s dad.

While the “House” season DVDs are never what you’d call packed with extras, the tightly knotted plots and the rapid-fire dialogue makes this a great show to watch more than once. Also try and track down plot-lines that never quite went anywhere, like Cuddy’s rumored pregnancy or her not-quite romance with Wilson.

“House” season 3 drew top ratings while continuing with the show’s unflinching dialogue and medical situations. This may not have been a great year for “Grey’s Anatomy” or “E.R.”, so cruise on over to Princeton Plainsborough for a few hours of intense hospital drama.

That incredibly crabby doctor with the serious leg pain is back for the third season of the acclaimed medical series “House, M.D.” And once again Hugh Laurie and company came up with another winner of a season, although in my opinion it was just a tad notch below the first two seasons. Still, “House” season three is still very much worth watching.

Laurie once again dominates season three as he did with seasons one and two, and come Emmy time he better be rewarded! (He’s already won two Golden Globes and one Screen Actors Guild award for his portrayal of Dr. House.) Being snubbed for a nomination for season two was a crime! His performances throughout season three was probably some of the best acting that Laurie has done on the show so far, thanks in part to one major storyline early in the season. David Morse was introduced in the fifth episode as Detective Tritter, a cop who comes to the hospital as a patient. Guess which doctor he ends up getting? Before you know it, Dr. House starts off by treating him rude, and if that’s not bad enough, pops Vicodin right in front of him. Later on, he arrests Dr. House for possession of drugs, and thereafter tries in every way to make the cranky doc’s life miserable (such as when Dr. House has to go for days without Vicodin and ends up in rehab). In addition, these turn of events also put a disturbing effect on his team, as the cop pressures each team member to give him some answers about their boss. This was a very strong storyline, and Morse was excellent in the role of the ticked off cop.

Sure “House” is the Hugh Laurie show, but lets not forget about the superb supporting cast: Lisa Edelstein as hospital administrator Lisa Cuddy; Omar Epps as neurologist Eric Foreman; Robert Sean Leonard as oncology specialist James Wilson; Jennifer Morrison as immunologist Allison Cameron; and Jesse Spencer as intensive-care specialist Robert Chase are all back for season three, and they’re better than ever. For all three seasons these actors are given plenty to do in support of Laurie, and each of them does a great job playing off not only Laurie but each other. This is thanks to some terrific writing by creator David Shore and his writing team. They not only make this show compelling but smart as well. My favorite episode from season three is the one titled “Airborne”, where House and Cuddy board a plane departing Malaysia that soon becomes a hospital ward when several passengers become seriously ill (including Cuddy); while back at Princeton-Plainsboro Wilson, Chase, Cameron, and Foreman try to solve a medical mystery on their own. This is a great episode, maybe the best overall episode of the show so far. It’s not only thrilling and dramatic, but funny and shocking as well. Other great episodes include the second episode “Cane and Able”, in which House and his team try to figure out why a 7 year old boy thinks he’s being tortured by aliens, and the next-to-last episode “The Jerk”, in which Dr. House meets his match with his latest patient: a teenage chess player with an arrogant attitude that’s even worse than House’s.

Despite this show’s greatness, I had a few quibbles on the third season of “House”. One season three episode didn’t work for me (episode #12 – “One Day, One Room”). I found this episode kind of dull and not all that interesting. It’s not real bad, but I just didn’t seem to care about it all that much, which makes it the weakest episode of “House” so far. One minor storyline that was also kind of silly was the sexual hook-ups between Chase and Cameron, which featured them getting down and dirty in the hospital, in a patient’s house, etc. And it was only for fun. Chase wants a relationship, but Cameron doesn’t. This really isn’t smart writing on the part of the writing team on “House”. I think it was only thrown in their due to the real-life engagement of the actors who play Chase and Cameron (Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison got engaged midway through season three). But in all fairness, I think this storyline would have worked better if the writers had done exactly what Chase wanted: let them have a relationship. These actors do look great together. I think a serious relationship storyline between Chase and Cameron would be awesome. Perhaps that might come later.

Familiar faces who show up for guest appearances during season three include: John Larroquette (”Night Court”), Kathleen Quinlan (”Apollo 13″), Joel Grey (”Cabaret”), Charles S. Dutton (”The Piano Lesson”), Piper Perabo (”Coyote Ugly”), Kurtwood Smith (”That `70s Show”), and pop star Dave Matthews.

The final episode of season three apparently will be opening the door for changes when season four debuts in the fall, as House lost his entire team (Foreman and Cameron resigned; Chase fired). I’m hoping that this will not be the end for some members of this great ensemble cast. I love this cast on “House”, and if any one of these cast members leave the show or end up being let go, I will be very saddened by it. But this is the show’s big cliffhanger for the summer. We’ll eventually find out what will happen when season four returns this fall. And my fingers are crossed that all these cast members return.

Those who grew up, as I did, with Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, and the rest of the SF grandmasters as their constant companions may find this movie too action-oriented, with too little emphasis on ideas, with not enough ratiocination to justify having Asimov’s name associated with it. But at the same time, I found this movie to be quite entertaining, in places visually stunning, and, while not following the format or story line of any of the original stories contained in the book I, Robot, does hew fairly closely to the larger story line about robots that Asimov eventually developed in multiple related books.

The original book was based upon the then (1940) unheard of idea that robots, rather than being creatures prone to run amuck and destroy their creators, would be constructed with built-in laws that would not only make them safe, but a great boon to all humanity. The stories were careful little logic mysteries, dealing with the potential problems that can occur when there are conflicts between the governing three laws, the situation, and commands given the robot.

Will Smith plays a detective here, one who does not trust robots, who is afraid there is something decidedly wrong about these powerful and nearly ubiquitous machines which are driven only by logic, without any trace of emotion to leaven their choices. Clearly this places him on the wrong side of general (and his commanding Lieutenant’s) opinion. But nevertheless he is called upon to investigate the apparent suicide of Dr. Lanning, co-founder and chief scientist of USR (Asimov’s name was U. S. Robotics, but that has since been used by a real company). Susan Calvin (played by Bridget Moynahan), the company robo-psychologist, is assigned to help him with his investigation. Early suspicion falls on Sonny, a prototype NS5 robot, as possibly having something to do with Dr. Lanning’s death.

The story line through this early portion of the movie is decidedly Asimovian in nature, leading me to believe that it really would follow the type of story construction contained in the original book. But later sections of the movie take it far beyond the problems of one robot, and into the realm of management of human society for a greater good, a theme that Asimov did tackle in later stories. It’s almost as if this movie crammed about six different Asimov stories into this one, with a decidedly uneasy result: part action, part mystery, part character study, part utopian/dystopian world image, but none fully developed.

Will is OK in this part, although there are a couple of places where his actions are decidedly unbelievable (pin-point accuracy shooting two revolvers from a motorcycle that has just bounced into the air?), and there are a couple of times when he doesn’t seem to be totally comfortable in the detective role. The portrayed character of Dr. Calvin, though, came as a shock, as the depiction by Ms. Moynahan here is almost the antithesis of Asimov’s Calvin. For those who have never read Asimov, her portrayal is good, with just enough mixture of clinical logic and overboard emotionality to be fairly convincing – but the clash with my mental picture of Calvin as dry, unemotional, and not conventionally pretty made it difficult for me to truly evaluate this performance. James Cromwell as Dr. Lanning was almost perfect, though a very small role. Sonny the robot is played (or at least voiced) beautifully by Alan Tudyk, and the CGI work here is excellent – in many ways this character steals the show.

A mixed bag: better than average visuals, some decent acting, even a plot line that at least understands the original book material (no sure thing when it comes to Hollywood understanding real science fiction); but a lack of cohesiveness, action for action’s sake, and some ideas not fully developed. Better than the normal Hollywood attempt at adapting an SF classic, good for a couple hours of entertainment, but not a great movie.

My first reaction as this film began was “Wait! This isn’t Asimov.” The Asimov I grew up reading was a weaver of ideas, more mind candy than adventure story. But here I found myself in Will Smith’s bedroom, and then suddenly catapulted into a wild chase after a purse grabbing robot. A far cry from the delicacy used by Asimov. It took a while for the shock to wear off but eventually the conflict between Smith’s gritty performance as Del Spooner and his original inspiration in the reminiscences of Dr. Susan Calvin (played by Bridget Moynahan) wears off and the view settles into a film that is inspired by Asimov, but does not imitate him.

The sooner that happens, the better, because this is an exceptional film in its own right, even if it does proceed with the speed of a video game. Smith creates a wisecracking character with a deep mistrust of robots. He is called in to to investigate what appears to be an impossible killing – robots can’t kill humans, it’s the first law of robotics. But Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell) lies dead and the only suspect is ‘Sonny’ a Series 5 robot with some surprising circuitry (played by Alan Tudyk).

The death is declared a suicide, but Spooner refuses to give in. suddenly the automated world turns on the detective, whose unlikely ally is Dr. Calvin, a robopsychologist responsible for the psyches of masses of robots about to be distributed around the planet. One hair-raising escape after another propels the story along until viewers find themselves at a surprisingly reflective conclusion. Not exactly classical Asimov, but a great story nonetheless.

Will does a good job as Spooner, but he is upstaged by Moynihan’s performance. And both are blown away by Tudyk and the animators performance as Sonny. As you watch Sonny develop from being slightly more simpatico than the scenery into a full-blown personality there are countless moments of surprise. Moynihan and Smith do their best, but from the moment Sonny turns to Spooner and says “Thank you… you said someone not something.” The film belongs to the robots.

Excellent animation and CGI create a world that is a retro version of the future – perhaps exactly what Asimov imagined rather than what we would now. The result is a compelling mix of the outré and the mundane that sticks in the mind just as Sonny’s wink does.

This is not just an action film. Threaded through it are the same questions that Asimov raised about the nature of self and intelligence. Robots may never be human, but there are far more than furniture. And if their thought processes are alien, they are more than the sum of their programming. The result is one of the more carefully thought out science fiction films in recent times.

When Mystery Inc. again solves another mystery, the gang splits up for reasons of their own. Velma (Linda Cardellini) is tired of not getting any credit for her brain-work, Fred (a blonde Freddie Prinze Jr.) arrogantly thinks himself better working alone, and Daphne (Sara Michelle Gellar) has had it with her ‘damsel-in-distress’ part. Only Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Scooby Doo (voice by Neil Fanning) is left heart-broken. But a few years later, the whole gang is invited to Spooky Island to investigate the mysterious going-ons and the strange behavior of the students who visit there. Of course the Scooby Gang wants to solve the mystery without the help of the others but in the end, the discover that the only way they would ever solve the mystery is to work together. But it will not be easy as clue by clue, the gang discovers a sinister plot to rule the world!

*PLOT* “Scooby Doo” is certainly now one of my favorite movies of all time! The plot is all familiar with all people; a team breaks up only at the end to work together to save the world (or something like that). But that plot never seems to get old since “Scooby Doo” is incredibly fun to watch! The teen music is pretty cool to listen to, too!

*ACTING* The acting is just stunning to watch! Since I’ve seen many of the Scooby Doo cartoons, it was so much fun to see all the actors and actresses playing the cartoon characters to perfection! Probably I was most impressed with Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, his voice was exactly the same as in the cartoon and even his actions and expressions were perfect! But of course all the characters were terrific, even the computer dog Scooby.

*GRAPHICS AND ACTION* The computer graphics were stunning, from the spooky ghosts to the scary creatures, and we mustn’t forget the lovable Scooby! Plenty of action at the end, too. My favorite action scenes are, 1) Daphne showing her new martial arts skills and 2) Fred’s plahing around comes in handy as he handles a bunch of bad guys.

*HUMOR* But of course the best thing about the movie is the incredibly funny humor! None of the jokes are hard to catch while there is some slapstick humor. But of course the movie is rated PG because of some humor.

So, put it all together and we have a very entertaining movie! I just cannot wait for “Scooby Doo” to come out on DVD! And, if the rumors are correct, I’m looking forward to “Scooby Doo 2″!

The key to enjoying SCOOBY DOO is not to expect too much. The producers have billed the film as half hommage, half parody; in truth, it isn’t really close enough to the original cartoon to be called hommage and it really doesn’t go far enough to be called parody, and as usual Hollywood makes the mistake of trying to cover up the script’s inadequacies with big-budget production values and expensive but actually so-so special effects. All the same, the film does have its moments. The story finds Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy splitting up due to ego conflicts–and then being unexpectedly reunited when the owner of a teen resort called “Spooky Island” invites them in to find out why his guests arrive as normal teens and then depart as, well, ZOMBIES.

The script is fairly mundane, but it does have a few zingers, as when Velma says “Let’s get jinky with it!” And although the cast is a mixed bag, they work hard to bring it off. Freddie Prinze is wildly miscast as Fred and Sarah Michelle Gellar is not an ideal Daphne, but they play with tremendous energy; Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini, however, are so dead on target with their performances that they create an amazing sense of deja vu. As for Scooby Doo, he is (of course) a computerized animation. And so are most of the monsters the gang encounters on Spooky Island. Although it works reasonably well, it isn’t anything to write home about.

I would recommend that parents preview the film before unleashing it upon their kids; some younger children may be unnerved by the monsters. The DVD comes with a number of extras that include some cut scenes–and they offer an interesting contrast with the film, for they are very satirical. Seeing them left me with the feeling that the film would have been much more entertaining if those scenes had been left in and the whole thing had been done with the same bite. As it is–SCOOBY DOO is neither a great film nor a memorable film. But we’re all occasionally in the mood for some mindless fluff, and it fills that niche very well indeed.

That’s one of the taglines for this United Artists release. After watching this movie, my first impression was “Man, what a cornball movie.” But after a little more thought, and realizing that this came out in 1951, I soften a bit. Yeah, it was corny, but it did have its’ charms.

Robert Clarke stars as John Lawrence, a newspaper reporter called to a Scottish moor by his friend, Professor Elliot, to cover what will be the story of his lifetime. A seemingly stray planet is headed in the general direction of Earth, and the moor is the location that it will pass closest to Earth. Prior to this event, they find a strange, alien object on the moors, followed by actual alien spaceship fashioned in classic 50’s sci-fi fashion. Not only that, but the alien spacecraft is inhabited by a pretty funky looking humanoid creature. If you’ve ever seen the Honeymooners episode where Ralph dresses up as a spaceman, then you will have a pretty good idea of what this alien looks like.

Anyway, they try to communicate with it, with the help of another scientist, Dr. Mears, played by William Schallert, the only actor I recognized as he’s been on like a bazillion TV shows, probably most famous being The Patty Duke Show, and a whole mess of movies. Seems he has rather a dubious past, and his intentions are less than admirable when dealing with this advanced creature from another world.

When Mears starts throttling the alien for his space secrets, the alien takes off, and things start to get a little hairy as the alien begins to set his plans into action. What is this alien’s connection to planet X? What are his intentions on our planet? Wait until the end of the movie to find out, because while throughout most of the movie the plot slides along at the pacing somewhat akin to a snail, we see the pace quicken like a jackrabbit in the last ten minutes or so, including a huge, steaming pile of rather clunky exposition to fill the viewers in to what’s going on…and a really unintentional question asked at the end by the female lead that made me wonder if she had even experienced the events in the movie because the question really contradicted everything that happened, at least in my opinion.

My only real gripe with the movie is Robert Clarke. Quite a handsome man at the time, looking sort of like Errol Flynn, he just didn’t seem to fit in well in this genre. He seemed a little too sophisticated, a little to debonair, with his pencil thin mustache, to play the part he was given. I envisioned sci-fi veteran Richard Carlson playing the part much better.

This is a really good-looking print, but don’t expect any extras other than a trailer. I do appreciate MGM releasing these Midnight Movies at a reasonable price, and I know they’ve started doing double bills for the same price, but not here, as this DVD was released prior to that worthwhile change. Are there better sci-fi movies of that time period out there? Sure, The Thing, and War of the Worlds to mention two, but this one ain’t so bad, if you got 71 minutes to kill and an interest in classic science fiction movies.

THE MAN FROM PLANET X is not without it’s charms. More intelligent than you might imagine, better scripted than you could beleive it to be, and far more fun than it should be – it is a solid film that is first out of the gate with ideas (invsion from outer space) and themes (old scientist father, hot daughter, Mother dead – just what happened to all these Mothers? I swear these movies existed in another universe where the women went off to fight WWII leaving the men behind) that would find their way into the larger, bigger, and far better remembered British Horror film industry – but there is something else about THE MAN FROM PLANET X that is also worth the price of admission alone – and that’s lessons in how to make a film fast, cheap and easy. Count the shots. Count the cast… count the sets… there is very little here that wasn’t borrowed or reused from other films (even the box states that the ENITRE film was shot on a standing set left behind from Ingrid Bergman’s JOAN OF ARC). It’s a lesson in filmaking – take what little you’ve got, add a lot of fog and a solid script and you’ve got yourself a movie. Overall – a classy little feature with a highly effective alien and atmosphere – a solid addition to your DVD library.

I had been looking forward to this for so long. I’d seen all the casts interviews on Today so long ago and couldn’t wait to watch this. Because in Australia we yet again don’t keep up with the rest of the world, I bought this on dvd and it was as good as I thought it would be. I really love Candice Bushnall and she didn’t disappoint with this series.

Brooke plays Wendy Healy, Kim is Nico and Lindsay is Victory. They are longtime friends who are challenged with keeping up with complicated business and personal lives. Wendy is a film executive and a wife to a musician husband Shane whose own career takes a backseat to hers. Victory had a top notch fashion career that she’s trying to start again. And lastly Nico who’s the editor of a top fashion magazine and her marriage has issues too. That’s the main premise and with each episode we see their lives go through ups and downs professionally and personally.

When my copy arrived, I watched it all in one weekend. It’s addictive and I found it really enjoyable. Victory is my favourite character and yet they all make the show. I don’t think there is one particular stand out role. This is a great new program that you’ll really enjoy if you loved SATC. It’s different and yet just as good and I hope it gets the same kind of longevity. I highly recommend this.

Like many others, I scoffed and rolled my eyes at the promos for “Lipstick Jungle.” It basically looked like NBC’s spin-off of “Sex and the City.” After all, both shows are based on books by Candice Bushnell and both shows focus on the friendship between beautiful, successful women in NYC.

But honestly, “Lipstick Jungle” is great on its own merit! The show’s major strength lies in its leading ladies. All three actresses make their characters – and their relationships – believable. Their chemistry lends itself to the audience and you can see why their friendship works.

I also really liked how the show focused on the women’s careers. While the ladies of “Sex and the City” had powerful careers, not much time was spent on that aspect of their lives. “Lipstick Jungle,” on the other hand, weaves its storylines around the women’s jobs (instead of the men they love). It was refreshing to see such strong female characters talk about things beside their romantic entanglements.

On the downside, some of the plot lines lacked originality and pizazz. Sometimes it felt as though the writers were going for “hip” or “scandalous” scenarios (i.e. threesomes) that just fell flat. These situations didn’t work because they were too tame and, more importantly, other shows went there…years ago.

For the most part, however, “Lipstick Jungle” is a solid show. It has everything successful TV needs: good acting, believable characters, and interesting stories.

One word of caution: the DVD only features seven episodes, so it would be cost efficient to rent or wait until the price drops a bit. You can also watch the episodes (with limited commercials) on NBC’s website for free. Check it out!

So I rented “Mean Girls” not expecting too much – just a chick flick with a stupid plot. Boy, was I wrong!

The film could have been bad. Worse than bad – it could have been awful. But it wasn’t. It turned the other way, entering the dark world of the Plastics.

Tina Fey shows an excellent grip over satire and comedy in not only her performance, but also her screenplay. I also felt it smart to utilize the talents of other SNL mates, Tim Meadows and the glorious Amy Poehler, who all seem to have excellent chemistry and add so much comedic parts to the film.

Fey portrays high school life in a vicious, yet addicting, satire of the teenage years. There are parts to the film that I think everyone is able to relate to, whether you’re at the butt of the joke, or you’re the one divvying them out. Either way, you can’t help but laugh, or say, “That’s so fetch!”

And like I said, a film like this is fragile territory (especially after Lohan’s poor film choices lately…), but I feel that all of the actors pulled it off so well.

If you’re looking for a light, hilarious satire, look no further than “Mean Girls,” and see what everyone’s talking about…

This was my fourth time watching Mean Girls. I really like it and think it shows the high school scene through a girl’s point of view. This movie’s about a young girl who enters high school for the very first time. 16-year-old Cady Heron has been home-schooled all her life. Till now that is. She befriends Janis Ian and Damian, who informs her on who is “naughty or nice” in the school. They also tell Cady about, and to stay away from, The Plastics. One day, Cady gets invited to sit with The Plastics for lunch. Regina George, the leader of The Plastics (aka “The Queen Bee”) invites Cady to eat with them for the rest of the week. Cady agrees, and then afterwards tells Janis and Damian the news.

When Cady falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, Regina agrees to talk to him for Cady. At a Halloween party, as Regina is talking to Aaron, she inadvertently kisses him. Heartbroken, Cady and her two friends plan to destroy Regina (emotionally of course). They do all kinds of stuff to breakdown Regina’s “image”.

This is a really good movie with a great cast. Lindsay Lohan plays an outstanding role as Cady. Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams (also starred in The Notebook) is awesome at her role also. Her role was also very believable, as if she was a real life “Plastic”.

P.S. When I first saw this movie, I had no idea Rachel McAdams played the part of Regina George. I was in complete shock when I heard.
