Finally you to will believe in the power of the mighty Trunks. The Trunks saga is the one i’ve been waiting for and finally it’s here on DVD.I have seen the uncut saga and its sure to please any DBZ fan. With the arrival of Trunks starts in my opinion the coolest time in DBZ. So Frieza beware, the next level of super saiyan is here. This DVD contains both dubbed and subtitled episodes so the fans of DBZ wont be dissapointed.

This is a great beginning to another saga in Dragonball Z. It begins with Gohan and everyone on Earth thinking that everything is fine, but soon trouble finds them. Frieza and his father, King Cold, land and are set on destroying everything. All of a sudden, Trunks shows up and the battle begins. This is a great tape and shouldn’t be missed, but also get the next tape, Prelude to Terror, to see what happens after the cliffhanger at the end of this tape.

Breaking the Bank is an episode of the award-winning “Frontline” television series, now available on DVD. The true-life story of Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis and former Merrill CEO Jon Thain and the risks they took amid a financial crisis threatening to destroy the American economy, Breaking the Bank presents a dramatic yet unbiased accounting of the facts as the federal government was forced to seriously consider nationalizing the banking industry – or risking nationwide economic collapse. Readers of all backgrounds will appreciate this riveting glimpse into the inner workings of economic titans with glass ankles; Breaking the Bank is especially recommended for public library DVD collections – the modern economic morass is one piece of history that everyone needs to learn about, because no one can afford to repeat it!

Frontline offers thoughtful blow-by-blow coverage of the 2008 Wall Street meltdown. There’s lots of inside baseball here — but the essential value of this video is the chronology of key events and the (questionable) actions of the players involved.

How soon we forget — and how easily the media now distort — the factual events of this economic disaster. It was September 2008 when Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson pushed $700 billion of TARP funds and governmental controls on the banks in an attempt to counter the failure of Lehman Bros. Paulson then forced upon B of A the panicked acquisition of toxic Merrill-Lynch. Not presented in this video was the $13.4 billion bailout literally handed to GM and $4 billion to Chrysler in December of 2008. It seems the “invisible hand” of the market wasn’t quite so self-correcting during the last days of Bush/Cheney casino capitalism.

Beyond the intricacies of these financial maneuvers and the personality quirks of the power brokers involved, the insights viewers should glean from this documentary are: (1) since Reagan, this country has allowed the dismantling of federal financial regulation to our peril, (2) appropriate oversight and transparency in the public and private sectors should be mandated, and (3) the core of our economy (and this democracy) erodes when the interests of corporate wealth and personal wealth continually eclipse our common wealth. This video brings to mind a quote from Justice Louis Brandeis, “We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.”

After watching the first season of erotic supernatural series “The Hunger”, I was looking forward to more, and finally “The Hunger:The Complete Second Season” has been released on DVD. Host Terrence Stamp is gone (thank goodness) & I have to admit that I did not much care for his preachy ruminations, and in his place is the refreshingly candid David Bowie who appears to be in some sort of prison (Bowie also acts in one of the episodes. Coincidentally, he was also in the movie “The Hunger” with Catherine Deneuve, portraying a dying vampire). As with the first season, there are 22 episodes in all, each one containing a fair share of nudity and sex scenes, running about 26 minutes each (on 4 DVDs):

1. Sanctuary – stars David Bowie and Giovanni Ribisi in a story about a wounded man seeking the aid of a rather interesting artist.

2. Skin Deep – this story sees a lesbian who becomes strongly attracted to an erotic dancer with unique body art, and enters a world of pain and pleasure.

3. The Dream Sentinel – one of my least favorites of this season. The story revolves around an erotic dancer (Alice Poon) who is ‘haunted’ by a ghost (Eric Roberts). The ghost is obsessed with possessing Alice’s body, though his incorporeal form makes this rather difficult, and torments the girl instead by invading her dreams.

4. And She Laughed – Jennifer Beals of Flashdance stars as a woman tormented by a peeping tom in her apartment complex, driving her insane in the process.

5. Nunc Dimittis – I actually liked this one as it has a unique take on the traditional vampire tale. A servant (David Warner) discovers he is dying, and must fulfill the final request of his strange mistress, an ancient princess, with the surname Draculus.

6. Week Woman – this is one of my favorites. A foreigner(David LaHaye) desperate to get his green card agrees to marry a strange woman (Brooke Smith) who happens to take on a different personality every week, including n entire week where she thinks and acts as a dominatrix!

7. The Night Bloomer – this episode has sci-fi overtones as a fertilization and pollination specialist ropes in an unsuspecting man into her sinister scheme which involves getting rid of their boss.

8. The Diarist – Lisa Ann Hadley plays a practicing witch who casts dark spells in a desperate bid to revenge herself upon the man who spurned her.

9. Sin Seer – a man is tormented by his ability to see people’s darkest secrets when he looks into their eyes, driving him to an act of desperation.

10. Triangle in Steel – heavy with Native American imagery. A construction worker makes an unfortunate choice in love.

11. Brass – a man inherits a brass bed and mirror from his dead father’s estate, and discovers his father was involved in the dark arts.

12. The Replacements -another one with a sci-fi/vampire theme. A doctor tries to unearth the mystery of what is turning the women in his town into zombie-like creatures, including his beloved wife who suddenly seems distant and protective of a little something snuggled against her chest.

13. I’m Very Dangerous Tonight – remember the killer red dress from Season 1? It’s back!

14. Wrath of God – quite a gruesome episode. A killer/torturer who considers himself the wrath of God targets mostly gay men at an apartment complex. There’s a nice twist here involving the apartment complex owner and his relationship with a mysterious man.

15. Bottle of Smoke – a genie tale with a twist. A young woman inherits a special bottle from her dead aunt which has the power to grant her sexual gratification, but comes attached with a dire warning.

16. The Perfect Couple – an airport employee possesses the ability to bring people together and catches up with one couple a few years later to see how they are faring.

17. The Sacred Fire – a woman tries to help a homeless man who believes his family was murdered by aliens in the guise of humans.

18. Approaching Desdemona – a couple’s closeness is threatened when the man becomes trapped by a strange sex website.

19. The Seductress – based on a story by horror writer Ramsey Campbell, this episode tells the story of a female author who is attracted to a strange man who consumes her, whilst feeling `haunted’ by a past tragedy.

20. Double – a doppelganger story.

21. The Falling Man- an architect falls under the spell of an attractive woman who is more than she seems.

22. The Suction Method – a philandering middle-aged married man gets `sucked’ in by a sexy carpet cleaner.

As for technical specs, the DVD is in 1.33:1 full frame. There are some `fuzzy’ shots that are probably in there to enhance the `atmosphere’ in the stories, including some scenes with dim lighting. Oh, there’s a special feature “Mr. Skin’s Top Ten Nude Scenes from The Hunger” (running time abt 29 mins). On the whole, my husband & I both found “The Hunger:Season 2″ to be an entertaining and sexually-charged supernatural (with some elements of sci-fi) series.

“Quick Change” is Absolutely Hysterical. The 3 principle actors give the Performances of their Comedy Careers. Bill Murray also Co-directs, proving what a true cinema legend he is.

Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid star as 3 would-be Bank robbers who Succeed in their well-laid robbery plans, yet Fail in their plans for Escape. The Robbery is over in about 10 minutes of screen time, the rest of the film deals with their Futile Escape attempts from the Isle of Manhattan. Whatever could go wrong, does go wrong as they deal with Foreign Cab drivers, Slick Stick-up men, Gun wielding Couples, Malicious Mobsters and Determined Police.

Bill’s Straight-faced Sarcastic comedy styling has Never been used to such full effect as they are here. The role suits him like James Bond suits Pierce Brosnan. Geena and Randy support him Wonderfully, as do Tony Shalhoub, Stanley Tucci, Jason Robards and Kurtwood Smith. The Writing and Directing are Snappy, Witty and Fast Paced.

“Quick Change” is Criminally Underrated. So many people I know have never heard of it, I show it to them and they Immediately Adore it. Everything in it works Perfectly and virtually Everyone should enjoy it.

Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid play New York’s perfect criminals. They have the perfect bank robbery plan. It’s perfectly executed. The only thing that gets in the way is the city in which they operate. The city that spawned these crooks, also spawned the madness (the same madness that frustrated Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis in THE OUT OF TOWNERS) that get in the way of their getaway. From the opening scene of Bill Murray in a clown costume, I knew I was in for a quirky film, but it was much more than that. This was a surprisingly funny movie that captures the essential oddities of the city. Philip Bosco plays a bus driver who would better be suited as a Marine drill sergeant at Parris Island, and he’s just one of the eccentrics. I won’t give anything else away. Just take my advice and give this underrated film a look.

Susan Hayward was one of the better actresses of the 40’s and 50’s, and this double feature DVD includes two of her better movies (one of which features a performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination).

Tulsa is a solid Eagle-Lion film that places Hayward in Oklahoma during the oil boom of the 20’s. Her father is a rancher who is killed while feuding with a local oil drilling company that happens to have a border on his property (he is killed in an accident while trying to tell the drillers to stop polluting his cattle’s water supply). When faced with losing the land that her father valued so much Hayward decides if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em (and then beat them at their own game). Her transformation from anti-oil drilling advocate to oil baron is actually scripted fairly well, and her performance is believable. The movie is pure Hollywood, but good Hollywood. There are no major surprises, but the movie is written, acted, and directed with such class that the standard Hollywood plot devices come off fairly well. The supporting cast is also quite good, featuring Robert Preston, Pedro Armendariz, and Ed Begley. Tulsa isn’t a great movie, but it ends up being a good one that is very entertaining.

Smash-Up is a marginally better movie, and Hayward was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as a singer who gives up her career to be a wife and mother. She is married to another singer whose career takes off just after she has given up her own. She has a hard time dealing with his success, and developes a jealousy towards his female personal assistant. While trying to cope with all of that she falls into alcoholism, and spirals downward until hitting rock bottom. Smash-Up is another well written movie, and Hayward was given a role that perfectly showcases her acting abilities. While not a great movie, this is a very good one, and one of the better melodramas of the day.

The DVD from Acme DVD Works (VCI) is fairly good. The prints of both of these movies seem to be the same prints used by other public domain companies, but the DVD mastering/authoring here seems to be a little better as the movies look sharper and have better contrast here than on some other public domain DVDs. The prints used are not great, however, so neither movie truly looks great on this DVD – this is just the best that I have seen either of them look.

Both of these movies are good, entertaining films that hold up under repeated viewings, and they show why many people prefer the golden age of Hollywood to the movies being made today.

SMASH-UP (1946) and TULSA (1949) give the DVD-viewer and potential Susan Heyward admirer a chance to see her strut her stuff before the wide acclaim she achieved with such movies as THE JANE FROHMAN STORY and I WANT TO LIVE in the 1950s.

SMASH-UP is arguably the better of the two movies because of its good-sized and precise cast, and because the topic it deals with, alcoholism, receives fairly sensitive treatment. Miss Heyward plays a former lounge singer bolted into the stratosphere socially and money-wise when her struggling composer husband finally hits pay dirt. But with the riches come inceased insecurity on Heyward’s part, as her character descends from the “couple of drinks” drinker to real alcoholism and at one point loses custody of her baby.

This film makes an interesting compare/contrast with the prior year’s “prestige film” success, LOST WEEKEND (1945). Of the two, LW treats its subject more graphically, and a bit more psychologically (”writer’s block,” we are told, but many critics have argued for homosexual guilt instead). Heyward’s SMASH-UP deals with its subject under both old and new paradigms: the montage sequence of her dragging from one lounge to another in midtown Manhattan is well-done but the kind of already-cliched treatment so wittily sent up on TV’s THE SIMPSONS. More convincing, or at least more in tune with our modern outlook, is the recognition that alcoholism is a disease, not a character defect as such.

Above all we have Heyward’s trimphant and intense character making this well-cast and well-formed film her very own. Several years later TULSA gave her a real star vehicle: a rags to riches to rags saga of an Oklahoma cattle queen turned oil queen and at one point as environmentally unfriendly as the oil men she used to despise. An intense and bravura film in very strong color, but not as well cast nor played quite as well as SMASH-UP in my humble opinion.

Other than a newsreel and trailer there are no other bells-and-whistles on this film duo. The films are easy enough to watch but clearly did not receive the kind of digital restoration that comes almost automatically on so many films-to-DVD today. Still, good entertainment at a good price and I doubt that Heyward fans will have much to complain about.

Years before “Citizen Kane” John Ford revolutionized the language of American cinema with “The Informer”. Atmosphere plays as much a character here as the actors themselves. Shadows, darkness, and fog forbode the doom of Gyppo Nolan(Victor McLaglen) as much as his guilty conscience for informing to the Black and Tans on his former brother in arms. This is a literate film that explores the psyche of a barely literate man. Gyppo ostensibly informs on Frankie McPhillip (Wallace Ford) to gain passage to America for himself and his streetwalker girlfriend(Heather Angel). The bloodmoney proves too much of a cross to bear so he literally gives it away to ease his burning guilt. This proves his undoing as the scent of his illgotten gains attracts the Republican Army to his trail of deceit. McLaglen won an Oscar for one of great performances in American screen history. McLaglen assays all the complexities of a seeming simpleton who commits the unthinkable and makes him sympathetic and ultimately worthy of redemption. “The Informer” is ultimately a film that will transcend the ages because it’s themes are as universal today as they were in 1935.

my estimate is that in my life ive seen in excess of 3000 movies, yet im bewildered at the number of acknowledged classics ive missed. so cross another off the list. john ford helmed this claustrophobic character study of one day in the life of a brute (no negatives attached to the word here) who betrays his best friend for money and learns to live (& die) with the results of his actions. victor mclaglen gives a perfect performance in the title role, and anyone who is accustomed to the expanses of fords monument valley films will be amazed at what he accomplishes with minimal, nearly expressionistic sets. great movie.

Actual detective shows are kind of hard to find now — let alone a funny, well-written detective series with a hilarious twist. That’s where “Psych” comes on, on the heels of “Monk.” While it could use a bit more ironing, this clever series does a good job blending comedy and mystery, and gives us some lovably fradulent guys to follow the adventures of.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Psych – The Complete First Season! Click Here

Shawn Spencer (James Roday) was trained to be ultra-observant and intelligent by his strict, humorless father Henry (Corbin Bernsen), who wanted him to be a cop. And though he is determined never to be a cop (he doesn’t even have a steady job), Shawn can glimpse clues and details that nobody else notices — even the police.

But it backfires when he reports his observations to the police, and is arrested as a suspect. To save himself, Shawn pretends to be a psychic — and the gimmick works so well that he decides to do it professionally. So he drags his very reluctant pal Gus (Dulé Hill) out of a boring job, and they end up regularly hired by the police chief, despite the skepticism of Carl Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who doesn’t buy their act.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Psych – The Complete First Season! Click Here

And so they set out into a variety of cases: death at a spelling bee, a haunting at a sorority house, a wedding tainted by theft and murder, a ghostly stalking, a cat used as a witness, Civil war reenactments, a comic book convention (where they mess with George Takei’s head), alien abductions, speed dating, underground poker, and organizing a surprise birthday party for Lassiter.

Most shows aren’t really able to strike a balance between comedy and mystery, but “Psych” does. The mysteries are light and fun, and the people making it actually seem to be enjoying themselves — no hardcore crimes, gore and grimness. That’s what makes it so enjoyable.

The mysteries are well done, but each one has enough funny dialogue (”My name is Ichabod Fletchman, Sticky-Icky to my boys”) and kookiness to keep it from ever being dull. Between kooky mysteries — usually with Shawn flailing around in his pseudo-mystical act — we get to see what turned him into such a weirdo, and his current relationship with his sarcastic father.

There is a slight flaw, though — a disproportionate number of the guilty parties seem to be pretty young women. Fortunately this starts lessening as the season goes on. The mysteries get progressively tighter, and the writing cleverer and funnier (”I’m never doing anything blindly with you again! I learned that at the Mexican border. Twice!”).

Roday is hilarious and brilliant — charming, funny, likable, pleasant, and completely devoid of any dignity (”IIIIII hear a voice!”), with some great full-body acting. Shawn is one of those people who is half luck and half talent; no matter how outragous he gets, things somehow always work out.

Hill is equally great as his intelligent, responsible, geeky sidekick who tries to keep them out of serious trouble, while the crusty Timothy Omundson and tentative love interest Maggie Lawson round off the cast. Corbin Bernsen also makes regular appearances as Shawn’s dad, who considers his son a walking freakshow.

“Psych’s” first season is a delightfully frothy mix of comedy and mystery, with solid scripting and likable characters. Definitely a good show to keep an eye on.

Shawn Spencer (James Roday) is a loser. He’s drifted from job to job ever since graduating from high school. The one thing he absolutely knows he doesn’t want to do is become a cop. That’s what his dad (Corbin Bernsen) has been training him to do since he was a little kid. Growing up, he learned how to observe every little detail at a glance.

Even though Shawn has no desire to be a cop, he can’t stop himself from calling in tips to the local police based on news reports he sees. After one such tip, he finds himself under suspicion for knowing too much. He quickly talks his way out of it by pretending to be a psychic. In fact, he’s so convincing, Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) hires him on a part time basis to help with difficult cases.

Shawn is usually teamed up with Detectives Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and O’Hara (Maggie Lawson). Lassiter doesn’t believe a word Shawn says and usually tries to trip him up. O’Hara is skeptical but can’t deny what she sees Shawn pull off time after time.

Also along for the ride is Shawn’s best friend Gus (Dule Hill). Gus is reluctant to get involved in the cases, but Shawn drags him in anyway. And the two have to deal with plenty of exciting cases. There’s a heir who is kidnapped, murders at a spelling bee and a comic convention, dastardly deeds at a high society wedding, and an urban legend that may be repeating itself.

This show is a blend of comedy and mystery. It airs right after Monk on USA, and is a perfect fit. While that show is often melancholy, this one is high energy. In fact, sometimes, it’s a bit too over the top. But most of the time it’s fun.

As with many shows, it took a little while to hit its stride. The first few mysteries are rather weak and the focus is on Shawn doing his fake psychic thing. When the show returned from hiatus with “Forget Me Not,” (easily my favorite of the season) it found the right balance. The show is still hilarious but the mysteries are much tighter.

And the comedy has something for everyone. It’s got fast, witty dialog, absurd situations, and full body slapstick.

The DVD set is packed with lots of extras. There are plenty of deleted scenes and one or two commentaries per disc. The first disc contains two versions of the pilot, behind the scenes segments, and some hilarious bloopers. My only real complaint with the set is the lack of episode descriptions. The titles are given, but they don’t always trigger my memory as to what the episode itself is about.

The show took a while to find its footing. But once it did, it became lots of fun.

….it was good for Warner Bros. to finally release Supergirl under its own label, after being previously released by Anchor Bay. Interesting, seeing as WB abandoned the film as a whole during its 1984 theatrical release.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Supergirl! Click Here

The film is virtually the same transfer of the international version as used on the Anchor Bay release, along with the commentary track by Bosco and Szwarc. (Interestingly, WB uses the famed John Williams Superman theme on the menu screens, despite the theme not being used in the film.)

The film was one of the most underappreciated entries of 1984, but is really worth watching, and only in the famed “international version”, and not in the heavily butchered theatrical version, which will hopefully never see the light of day on DVD ever. The film focuses heavily on fantasy aspects, with most of the Sci-fi aspects that made the whole Superman franchise.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Supergirl! Click Here

All in all, this DVD as a whole allows WB to make amends for giving up on this film before it ever got out of the gate. Hopefully, WB can go in when we see the next round of DVD tie-ins in 09 when the next Superman movie comes out, and revisit this film and even give us the “Director’s Cut” with a more wider release than the utterly expensive and limited edition that Anchor Bay gave us.

I really did enjoy this movie even though like many have said there are holes in it! Slater is beautiful and brilliant in this movie! She could truly bring a great sense of determination and innocent curiousity of her surroundings as Supergirl! I wished though the story could have been done better because she probably would have made more sequels, and be typecast forever as Supergirl! Well, what am I saying she already is! Even though the characters could have been created a lot more better(Dunaway as a true example), you can’t help but enjoy them, and be entertained!

Darkwing Duck is back with 27 more episodes on three discs. And he’s just as egotistical as ever.

For those unfamiliar, this cartoon follows the misadventures of Darkwing Duck, crime fighter in the city of St. Canard. There he faces such villains as Quackerjack, a demented toy maker, Megavolt, an eltrocharged duck, Negaduck, a manifestation of his evil side, and the organization F.O.W.L. And he does it all with his trusty gas gun and the help of his sidekick Launchpad and his daughter Gosalyn.

The episodes in this set contain some real winners. We get the origin of Liquidator, easily my favorite villain from the series. Neighbors the Muddlefoots head to a strange town with mutant cabbages. We get two time travel adventures, one that takes us back to the middle ages and one that takes us to a future ruled by a militant Darkwing. DW even must face off again death himself after he crashes while not wearing his helmet.

This show is so incredibly fun, and these episodes are no different. They are filled with mystery and adventure, yet also combine plenty of laughs. I especially enjoy their pun filled episodes, but their spoofs are just as fun. I’ll admit a couple were slightly creepy. And the shows are filled with all the cartoon violence you can handle.

As with the first set, the episodes are in original aired order, which means they are in random order. It’s rather hard to follow any storyline as character relationships seem to change at will as a result. There are also no extras, but the picture and sound are great.

These shows are great whether you want a laugh or a thrill. If you missed this show when it was on TV, jump on the chance to own the discs now.

MOONRAKER is okay and has a couple of good moments. The locations are beautiful ;007 travels to California,Venice,Brazil and Outer Space!Unfortunatly, this eleventh entry in the Bond series remains underrated and was never taken to heart by most fans.A plot that was definetly inspired by Star Wars and actors who do not seem to take their roles seriously may have something to do with it. Dr Holly Goodhead(Lois Chiles) is pretty but never had a status as a memorable Bond girl. Hugo Drax(Michael Longsdale) is not a classic example of a head villain. However,Jaws(Richard Kiel) adds flavor to this movie.Despite mixed reviews, MOONRAKER was one of the most grossing James Bond films of all time.I enjoy this movie once in a while, and I find it superior to the two first Roger Moore films(LIVE AND LET DIE and THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN) but inferior to FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME,and A VIEW TO A KILL.The theme song by Shirley Bassey is not bad.Worth a look, but dont have too many high expectations……….

This screen is starting to look like the metaphorical equivalent of the sweet space battle at the end of this breathtaking achievement of cinematic perfection. Well, I’m here to shoot a few of my own lasers now, this movie totally kicks a$$. Let’s start with the opening song, which I think is easily in the top 3 of all time best Bond openers.

So there’s this frog named Drax who wants to kill everyone on Earth, and start from scratch with his own breeding stock of beautiful people. The genocide of the ugly people of Earth comes by virtue of a space delivered disease, or nerve agent, or something equally superfluous, which Drax of course also manufactures.

I have a theory which goes a little something like this: When a man reaches a certain level of wealth, he naturally begins to contemplate some dimension of world conquest. The uber-villains Bond is often pitted against seem to pan this theory out nicely, begging the question, when will 007 take on Dick Cheney, Bill Gates, or Ronald McDonald?

So in comes old pervy Bond to salivate all over the dames, karate chop some mouth brething henchmen, and get all up in Drax’s grille. Drax, for is his part, is no sllouch though. The man is straight evil, but his taste in women, crib’s, and lasers is beyond reproach. I suppose because I grew up with Roger Moore playing Bond, I get the best of both worlds, because Connery and Moore are both Bond to me.

Now, in a movie which already has so much to offer the entertainment starved masses, we see the return of super hencmen JAWS. That alone should raise a pulse or two, because this guy is emma effin indestrutable. You can shoot him in the face, throw him out of an airplane, drop him in a tank full of ill tempered sharks, drop his a$$ from outerspace, and he doesn’t die. Why can’t we unleash this cat in Iraq?

So anyway, Bond figures Drax out, and its on. As I have previously alluded to, there is a magnificent space battle involving cats floating around in space shooting lasers, and invading space stations like that’s all they got paid to do. Wow, if it get’s any better than this they’ll start taxing us for it.
