The first time Nickelodeon sent us a DVD volume of iCarly, it felt like what it was: a Nickelodeon show from a new generation of programming. Now though, I’m willing to consider that iCarly might just have had a place back in the good old early 90s days of Nickelodeon glory alongside Pete & Pete, Clarissa Explains It All and All That. Season One, Volume Two of iCarly felt like a newer kids’ show with little gems of classic Nickelodeon mixed in, but the second season seems off to a happy inverse of that. iCarly has achieved a creatively funny streak that easily reminds me of a better Nickelodeon. But there’s a reason for that: Dan Schneider, one of the producers of All That (and one of its writers – but only in the later years) writes for iCarly.

Still running a show out of the loft where she and her brother live, Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) lives an otherwise normal life. Spencer (Jerry Trainor), her brother, is a comically eccentric sculptor with a penchant for spaghetti tacos, all-night video game obsessions and creating highly flammable metallic Christmas trees. Carly’s two partners on iCarly are Freddie (Nathan Kress), the tech guy, and Sam (Jennette McCurdy), her co-host. More often than not, the show gets them into all sorts of trouble including trips to Japan for award shows, fake car giveaways and feuding with other internet stars. Through it all Carly, Sam and Freddie struggle to keep their personal lives and their public personas separated; only to find them bleeding through into one another.

The funny Sam and Freddie rivalry continues in the second season, though it doesn’t occupy quite the limelight that it did in the first season. The shift in this case doesn’t really help the show’s comic strengths but it replaces the Freddie vs. Sam moments with a lot more Spencer – and fans of the show will agree that that’s not so bad. Jerry Trainor looks more and more like a Jim Carrey on the rise. His facial contortions, his spasmodic body language and his general wackiness give the Spencer character that special quality reminiscent of older Nickelodeon comedy. The same can be said for Jennette McCurdy who gives the perfect air to the wildly cynical Sam and imbues her with the deadpan personality that the character needs to stay relevant. I said this with the first season’s review, but Cosgrove still feels like the weakest link in the cast; Trainor has the wackiness; McCurdy has the deadpan delivery; Nathan Kress has the look of victimized exasperation; and all Cosgrove really brings is a slightly too heavily ham-handed spin on the comedy. She works as the more innocent of the show’s hosts, but her persona just isn’t as strong as McCurdy’s. It may be less her fault and more the writings, but there’s an imbalance there that just makes me wonder why she’s more the titular character than the other two.

But I digress. For all intents and purposes the show is television gold for a new generation. I won’t guarantee that anyone over 16 will enjoy it, but there are crazier things. The writing is sharp and it feels like Nickelodeon is letting its content return to that sarcastic edge that made Nick programming special all those years ago. My biggest gripe with the release is Nickelodeon’s insistence on these Volume 1/Volume 2 sets. With only 11 episodes it’s hard to justify paying typical TV on DVD prices – even with an extended length episode in the mix. Nickelodeon should really just release the two volumes as one – but oh well.

DVD Extra Features:

There are really only two extra features and one of them is deleted scenes, so as far as I’m concerned: one extra feature. But it’s a decent one and it chronicles the making of the extra long “iGo to Japan” episode. It’s fun to watch the cast interact because they’re every bit as energetic and enthusiastic as they seem in the show. Most people will probably just skip it, but it’s nice they included it for those who care.

This is such a great show. There is not one bad episode in the series and Dan Schneider is a TV genius. Highly recommended.

Steven Emerson’s “Terrorists Among Us – Jihad In America” is a great documentary, filmed in the last decade of the 20th century. Emerson dedicated all of his time to investigation of terrorist Islamic groups that operated freely in the U.S. Facts that Emereson uncovered are chilling and disturbing, and should have been an immediate and urgent warning bell for everyone in our country.

Emerson supports all his claims with video evidence – evidence that is hard to dispute. He had such excellent foresight, that it is criminal that he wasn’t taken seriously, but was instead discredited by Dan Rather due to a misunderstanding over the Oklahoma City bombing. Emerson’s documentary is clear and to the point. There were no instances in which I was confused or wondered if something was cut so it could be presented in a light that would suit Emerson’s agenda. Throughout the documentary it is clear that the only agenda Emerson had was the safety of the United States.

The only reason that I didn’t give this documentary five stars is because there was no update in the end. The film stands as it is, almost as a “I told you so!” statement. I believe that the movie would have a much bigger impact if Emerson emerged in the end (and above it all) with an updated information on the organizations and people he researched in the 1990s. Even without that, I highly recommend this documentary to everyone who has America’s safety on their minds.

Terrorists Among Us – Jihad in America Well, this puts the entire subject of Radical Islam in our face – where it belongs! We can no longer refer to Jihad in America in the future because it’s here – now – in every major city in every state! Pay attention America. I think that’s what the video is telling us…….Pay attention before it’s too late!

OK, I agree that it’s got something to offer that the 1973 first season didn’t.

Watch for great guest appearances by DC Heroes Rima, Green Lantern, Hawkman & Hawkgirl, Flash & Atom, as well as introduction of the characters created by Hanna Barbera for the series: Black Vulcan, Samurai & Apache Chief.

Each episode has 4 cartoons: A short with a team-up of two core members (ie Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman+Robin), then a Wondertwins short, then a half hour story with all core members and the Wondertwins, then a team-up with a core member and one of the guest stars listed above.

However, the 1973 season had its virtues too, such as narration by Ted Knight (reminiscent of his narration of the same characters in Filmation’s cartoons of the 1960s), 45 min stories, and guest appearances by Green Arrow, Flash and Plastic Man.

LET’S SEE VOLUME TWO COME OUT SOON AFTER VOLUME ONE, AND THEN GO BACK TO

(1) THE 1973 SEASON

(2) 1980 SERIES: WORLD’S GREATEST SUPERFRIENDS

Here’s hoping.

The featurette on Disc 2 of this super collection unfairly scoffs at The All-New SuperFriends Hour, dismissing it as a “one-dimensional” depiction of DC’s superheroes, with no character development and no real sense of threat or menace. These criticisms are valid, but so what? Corny though it may be, this colorful cartoon show is just a good-old all-American Saturday morning fun-fest–packed to overflowing with mad scientists, alien beings, special guest stars, helpful hints, easy-to-solve puzzles and potentially life-saving information! It’s wholesome entertainment the whole family can enjoy.

The SuperFriends Hour prominently features those purple-clad twins from Exxor, Zan and Jayna. These siblings possess some of the most mind-bogglingly bizarre super powers ever seen on TV. Simply by pressing their fists together and yelling, “Wonder Twin powers ACTIVATE!” the shape-shifting teenagers can trigger a seemingly infinite variety of transformations. Jayna can take on the form of any animal, bird or insect. She may choose to become a giraffe or a gazelle, a Billy goat or a butterfly…she might even turn into a prehistoric pterodactyl. Weirder still, Zan’s changes are limited to either bodies of water or objects made of ice, such as an ice bridge or an ice ladder (both of which sound like slipping hazards). Most often, Zan elects to liquefy himself and fill a small bucket. That’s where Gleek–the gibbering buck-toothed space monkey with the ridiculously long prehensile tail–comes in. Gleek is the keeper of the bucket. This is a big responsibility for a little blue primate. We certainly wouldn’t want Zan to be without that bucket and wind up in an ordinary drinking glass, where he might accidentally be consumed by a thirsty SuperFriend. Holy un-cola, Batman!

This two-disc set contains seven complete SuperFriends Hours, each of which consists of four separate stories. That makes a grand total of twenty-eight super-powered adventures, including classic tales like these:

THE BRAIN MACHINE: Holy brainwaves! The well-meaning Dr. Cranum invents a machine that he hopes will advance mankind’s mental evolution by one million years, but he develops a swelled head (not to mention bulging yellow eyeballs and pointed ears) when he uses the machine on himself. Can Wonder Woman and the Dynamic Duo stop this misguided scientist before he turns all of Metroworld Amusement Park’s innocent fun-seekers into grotesquely deformed mental cases?

JOY RIDE: Although he doesn’t have his pilot’s license yet, Corky the bratty teenager takes his reluctant friend, Jeff, for a ride in a “borrowed” airplane with a bad carburetor and a broken radio. Fortunately, an eagle and a blue monkey with a bucket of purple water are there to save the day.

INVASION OF THE EARTHORS: Zan and Jayna foolishly decide to assume the forms of a puddle and a caterpillar, respectively, allowing them to be captured quite easily by an underground civilization of computer-savvy rock people led by the stone-hearted diabolical genius, Crag.

WILL THE WORLD COLLIDE?: Still sore at the Academy of Science for expelling him because of his supposedly unethical experiments, the vindictive Professor Fearo utilizes the gravitational Gyromagneto to wrench his fiendish alien friend Cleazor’s home planet out of its orbit and bring it into a collision course with Earth. And–jumping jeopardy!–Cleazor’s planet is composed of solid kryptonite!

TIME RESCUE: The foolhardy Professor Comstock uses his time machine to travel 2000 years into the future, where he soon finds himself in the clutches of a gang of short-statured desert slavers that look suspiciously like the Jawas from Star Wars. Lucky for him, his loyal assistant, Dr. Lau, has the SuperFriends’ number on speed-dial.

DAY OF THE PLANT CREATURES: A red-hot meteor full of cosmic radiation splashes into a swamp in the Everglades and quickly turns all nearby Floridians into green leafy vegetable-men.

FIRE: Holy inferno, Batman! Escaped prisoners, Mike and Walt, steal a pickup truck and race through a forest fire and across a burning bridge with the Dynamic Duo and Rima the Jungle Girl in hot pursuit. Little do the fleeing fugitives know that the truck they’re driving is loaded with dynamite!

VANDALS: Just for kicks, a juvenile delinquent named Spence and his weak-willed buddy break into Midland High and smash Old Man Morison’s print shop to smithereens. Their destructive fun is soon to be spoiled by a gorilla with an ice pole.

SUPERFRIENDS VS. SUPERFRIENDS: Galloping gladiators! Fin-headed father and son fish-men, Bogan and Nerak, capture Aquaman in their toothy green submarine and use their invisible muscle control ray to force the Sea King to do battle with a giant two-headed turtle called Serpentine.

THE ANTIDOTE: An earthquake rocks a remote region of India, startling the area’s abundant cobra population and sending the hissing hooded snakes slithering rapidly into a nearby village like a plague. Hundreds of villagers are bitten, and their supply of anti-venom is quickly exhausted. Their only hope is that Wonder Woman and Apache Chief can locate the hidden temple home of the giant king cobra, Cataro, and use his ample supply of venom to make a big enough batch of serum to save all of the suffering snakebite victims. Inuk-chuk!

And there’s so much more! You’ll learn how to make a rhythm instrument with dried beans and paper plates, and how to build a lovely model of a sailor’s spyglass out of wooden thread spools and a drinking straw. You’ll see Robin demonstrate the Heimlich maneuver on Batman; and Superman will show you how to treat a burn. You’ll learn about the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise, as well as the dangers of skateboarding in traffic and overloading your home’s electrical outlets. Wonder Woman will even show you how to safely pet a stray dog! So don’t delay, order your SuperFriends Hour DVD set today. Your health and safety may depend on it! And always remember the immortal words of Green Lantern, “The next time you’re in a fix, try acting like a diamond. You’ll come out shining under pressure.”

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Dead is, of course, for the original, uncut, unadulterated edition. The original is, quite simply, the most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to horror classics like Diabolique (the original French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Shining. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years old on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film still gives me the chills whenever I see it (usually at Halloween).

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was curious to see what they termed as “new footage.” What I got was a horrible mess that butchered the original film, removed the original music for a terrible synthesizer score and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a new character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the original is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the original cast look like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the original. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the original 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the new footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a new ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “new” version is a piece of trash that desecrates the most frightening film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

30 Anniversary version: No Stars

This review pertains only to the Millennium Edition DVD of Night of the Living Dead.

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dead has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to clarify.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Dead fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did right by this new edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the back of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the picture and sound are good, and though this doesn’t exactly contain the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the excellent 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the recent double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You get a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but still great); an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen); the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition); two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating portion of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually boring but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to produce Night of the Living Dead.

THIS is the right edition of Night of the Living Dead, the one to get for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the necessary people (notice that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the way it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead…

Although awareness of this film is rather minimal today, it deservedly won an Academy Award in 1948 as Best Foreign Film.
Rather than sickingly sweet, as so many films with a religious motif tend to be (e.g. “Brother Sun, Sister Moon”), this one has a grit, irony, and wry humor that holds up under repeated showings. If you liked “A Man For All Seasons,” there is a good chance you will like this effort, since it shares a kindred spirit.

Any caveats? Yes, several. It is filmed in black and white, and the present quality leaves much to be desired. There are lots of scratches and and other defects that make continued watching something of a challenge. The sound quality also leaves much to be desired. My greatest hope is that some day we will see a digitally restored DVD worthy of the outstanding content of this remarkable film. It has appeared on several lists of great films of the 20th century; and it truly deserves to been seen in a much better version than currently available.

On the other hand, the price is right. And considering you get to see a movie that is genuinely inspiring, thought provoking, uplifting, and an enduring classic —- it’s a much better buy than many tapes costing twice and three times as much.

No scratches, this is a brilliantly restored clean copy! Ignore the caveats from other reviews since they speak of the old VHS copy. I cannot find any reference online to the restoration but it is beautiful, we just watched it. We watched it from Netflix, same cover. English subtitles only– a French class!

I didn’t expect to buy this. First, I *hate* white electronics (they usually look cheap and like they should carry the Fisher Price logo). Second, I know people who have had serious issues with HP laptop motherboards. However, last week Staples had it for about two hundred bucks less than its MSRP which was about two hundred less than I expected to pay for these specs. I couldn’t resist.

I’m happy with the design. First, the white is not so bad. It has a shiny “pearl” like surface, a subtle graphic design on the cover/wrist rests and black and silver trim. This all makes it look more grown up and stylish than other white laptops. Second, compared to other laptops with these specs it’s not too big or heavy. It’s in-between a netbook and most full sized laptops. Also, the weight can be reduced by half a pound by swapping out the DVD drive for a dummy piece which is included.

I’m overall happy with the performance and quality. Seems fast and smooth for the most part, and I’m not currently having any problems with it. But I had a couple of initial problems. First, I had to take the first one I got back due to a stuck pixel that I couldn’t unstick with any software programs. I didn’t want to risk voiding the warranty with any physical methods. The second one I got was stuck-pixel-free. However, I was having serious issues playing internet video. That was a big deal to me. I tried a live chat rep – I think he was illiterate – he kept asking for info I had already provided, completely misconstrued my problem and even when I explained it for the 3rd time, he offered completely inappropriate solutions (e.g. program specific solutions, when I had told him it was in all programs). Somewhat dubious, I finally called tech support. I got a guy who was GREAT. Granted it took us over an hour of troubleshooting, but he finally figured it out. The issue was the wi-fi card driver. It just needed to be updated with the newest, which was posted on HP’s site. So, I highly recommend checking HP’s site for the latest driver updates, especially if you’re having this issue.

And I agree with the other reviewer about the battery – 2 to 3 hours is what you can reasonably expect, but it depends on what you are doing. And yes, it is very quiet. Also, I should note that I did not get the rectangular remote shown on the bottom of this page with mine. I only got the small card one shown in the pictures up top. So, I don’t think that other remote comes with it. (EDIT: Since I posted this review, Amazon has replaced the picture of the remote, it now shows a correct remote).

Just in case, I picked up Squaretrade’s 3rd party extended warranty. It was a great price compared to Staples’ and HP’s plans. And it will protect me if this ends up being a lemon or if my dog flies into the cord and knocks it off the coffee table.

Ordered this over the weekend, what a superb machine i mean super quiet, really fast, doesn’t heat up and has all the latest multimedia features. I removed the optical drive (slide and remove) and lost about half a pound on the weight. Battery is great gave me 3.5hrs. I don’t have any complains. Do yourself a favor and ignore the other two reviews. For $689 this is a steal.

I paid full price for this HP DV4 1540US laptop on November 5th 2009. I received the delivery of the computer promptly on Monday November 9th 2009. But when I opened the box it felt like I got a used/refurbished computer

Computer was loosely placed in the box without any cover. The power cord was open and placed loosely on the top of the computer….The user manual was open and placed on the computer instead of its designated location…I was very disappointed with the quality of packaging…It felt like the computer was opened used and then sent to me…It was very disappointing to get this kind of service quality from Amazon…

…I was so excited when I ordered the new computer after almost 5 years…(My Dell Dimension 5100 desktop died on me week before!! so decided to get a new computer)..but this made me rethink/doubt about Amazon’s commitment to customer satisfaction and quality.

Please keep this in mind before ordering electronics from Amazon.com.

Pros: Easy to use, sharp screen, clear voice instructions and less expensive than other GPS units with comparable features

Cons: Needs more dynamic search capabilities for POI (its a little too simple which is good and bad)

The Garmin C340 is a wonderful unit, I’ve tested several other units such as the Navmans & Magellans, but the Garmin was the hands down winner.

It has built in street level maps for both US and Canada – so there is no need to download detailed maps from your computer. In addition, the interface is a breeze to use – w/o even reading the manual I was able to get it up and running. The screen is razor sharp and the navigation controls are intuitive. Another bonus is that it has a built in rechargable battery, so you can walk around with it for a while or even program your next destination while you’re away from the car.

I recommend this unit very highly – especially after reviewing the alternatives at this price point.

———Update————–

Just an update because I’ve taken my Garmin C340 to: 1) Toronto, Canada 2) Omaha, NE 3) Salt Lake City, UT 4) Denver, CO and 5) Seattle, WA. I have to say it worked wonderfully. It NEVER led me astray and got me to my destinations without any problems. This is a definite must have because it’s so compact and easy to program that it makes exploring new cities a breeze. Who needs to rent an expensive GPS unit from a rental car agency when you have the Garmin C340 with you!

First of all, I’m an electronics junkie. My house looks like the Star Ship Enterprise, and I’m extremely picky concerning the function of everything that I purchase. Probably too picky. So, after being more than impressed with the Garmin StreetPilot c340, I decided to write this review. I purchased this unit due to an upcoming road trip to Florida, and I’m HORRIBLE with directions. It seemed like the logical thing to do. After much research on the latest GPS units, the c340 seemed to be best suited for my needs, financially and functionally.

PROS:

As stated time and time again, the c340 is extremely user-friendly straight from the box. No bulky manual is included (although one can be downloaded on-line), most likely due to the fact that it is not needed. There’s a brief start-up guide which is more than sufficient to get this thing up and running. Simply let the satellite locate your home location, which takes a few minutes and only has to be done once, and you’re ready to input your next destination. Hit “Where to?” on the touchscreen and everything is made perfectly clear. It could not be any simpler. You’ll then have options to enter addresses, food locations, lodging, your saved favorite locations and recent browsed selections, fuel, intersections, attractions, shopping, parking, entertainment, recreation, community, near-by cities, hospitals, transit, and auto service locations. There’s no guess-work involved: just touch the type of place you wish to find and go; you’ll get plenty of options. You can also touch the “Near…” option, type in a city of destination, and it’ll pull up businesses in that city for your convenience. Again, this unit is extremely easy to navigate. Pick your destination, hit “Go”, and you’re all set. Just follow the highlighted path and you’re sure to get there with ease. I’ve had no problems or long-term satellite loss in my area so far. Phone numbers are also shown which would be especially convenient when making hotel reservations on the road.

The suction mount is also very nice. I was skeptical about it at first: What if it falls off? Will I be able to see the road? No worries; it’s great. Like the unit itself, the mount is high-quality and very sturdy. Just attach the c340, place the mount into position (I have it right under my rear view mirror), and pull the lever down. I don’t see any way that this mount could fall off, and it’s not a distraction while driving. I hear that it’s illegal in California, but I really don’t see why. It provides the perfect location for the unit and is no more distracting than the rear view mirror. A dash-mount disc is included also for CA residents or in case you’d prefer a lower location, but it’s a permanent mount, so I’d advise caution if going with this option. I won’t use it myself.

As far as power goes, a 12V adapter is included for the car, but don’t worry about buying the AC adapter. The c340 includes a USB cable that allows it to be powered and charged via any computer with a USB port. Very convenient when planning out trips at home to save battery life. The USB cable also allows you to download male voices from the Garmin site such as American English Jack, Australian English Lee, and British English Daniel which is very cool.

CONS:

Not much to say here. The only ‘major’ thing I’ve noticed so far is that some local businesses are not in the database, and a few businesses are present which no longer exist. It’s kind of strange: local mom and pop stores can be pulled up, but NO Walmarts in my area. I have three Walmarts within 25 miles of my home, and none are in the database. I didn’t subtract any points since all Garmin GPS units seem to utilize the same database (nearly 6 million points of interest) and it does have the potential to be updated. Also, keep your eye on the road during exits as it may not detect recent route changes. It will recalculate a new route if you simply go past the road that has changed; you won’t get lost, but it can be an inconvenience. It’s happened only once to me so far and I’ve been doing a lot of traveling. It was a familiar area and I didn’t even realize that the road had changed. Again, this is a Garmin database problem which hopefully will be addressed in a future update.

The voices for the most part are spot on. They can pronounce streets that I’ve been mispronouncing for years. However, every now and then it’s hard to decipher what they’re saying as they can sound overly-digitized. This is just a minor inconvenience since most of the time they’re flawless, but keep your eye on the screen just in case you don’t understand the street name. No big deal really. I use American English Jill, and she is usually very accurate with pronunciations. British English Daniel is also easy to understand, although he must be downloaded.

CONCLUSION:

All-in-all, I’m very, VERY impressed with the performance of the Garmin c340. This is my first GPS, and I can’t imagine needing anything more. I’m not sure what these $1000+ units do, but unless they drive me to my destination and pump my gas, I don’t need them. I’ve heard people complain that the touch screen collects finger prints. Hmmm…unless you have jelly, paint, or motor oil on your fingers, it does not detract from the display. Hello, it’s a TOUCHscreen. Of course it’s going to get finger prints on it. Wipe it off now and then and you’re good to go. I’ve also heard complaints that sometimes the unit doesn’t give you ample time to turn via text-to-speech. Well, I’ve been driving everywhere with this thing for the past three days, and it verbally tells you TWICE when to turn, by street name and in which direction to turn. It tells you once within a 1/4 mile or so and once again right before the turn. If you miss your turn after two verbal prompts, a big white arrow on the GPS screen, and the name of the street at the top of the screen, you may want to reconsider this whole driving thing. The turn alert is almost overkill; if you’re awake and free from severe brain damage, you can’t possibly miss it. Maybe this was a problem with some of the older units, but mine is perfect. Perhaps these people didn’t hear the first prompt and of course the voice prompt times will be shorter with city driving, but that’s to be expected. As far as satellite loss, I’ve only experienced a couple seconds of it while driving so far which is no inconvenience at all. There is an optional generic antenna that can be purchased for around $20 if this is a problem in some areas. The actual Garmin antenna costs more, but I’ve had no need for it so far.

After three days of taking the c340 everywhere, I absolutely love it; I have no regrets whatsoever. It’s one of the top 3 electronic purchases I’ve ever made in my life. I can’t wait to take it to Florida and find all the local attractions that I would never have been able to locate otherwise. This thing is great. I’ve already had two friends order the c340 after seeing how well mine works. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

UPDATE:

I just returned from Florida, and I love this thing even more. We never had any need for a map: I simply typed in each destination and we got there with no problems whatsoever. When we got a craving for some baby back ribs on the interstate, I simply hit food, barbecue, got a nice little list of local restaurants, picked one and hit GO. It takes you right there! It then took us right back to the interstate. I’m still amazed that this type of technology can be purchased at a reasonable price.

I was originally going to get the C320 but the text-to-speech feature made me decide to get the C340 instead. Overall, after having owned this unit for approx. 2 years, I am pleased with it. When I first got it, to build my faith in the product, I used it for a week just entering the places I normally go to see how the unit performed.

First I tried to enter a restuarant I have been going to for years. Route planning was very fast – the only problem is that the route took me 6 miles away from the restuarant into a residential neighborhood. The destination was someone’s house in this neighborhood! To retest, I chose the restuarant address from the built in POI listing instead of typing it in…and the result was the same. It had me going into a subdivision and to someone’s house. My second test was entering my work address. This worked fairly well except that a 2-year old change in the road was not registered on the map. So the unit got really confused when I was driving through what looked like a lake on the screen. Recalculation can be irritating as the unit repeatedly tries to force you to do U-Turns to get back on what it thinks is the best route. I’m sure this is region specific.

Bottom line here…don’t rely on the restuarant listings.

My next test was a little longer – it was a 25 mile drive to my mother’s house. Again, route planning was very fast (3-4 seconds). The route was very accurate to her house but the route seemed to favor toll roads and highways. The result was the same when I modified the preferences to prefer “back roads” and avoid highways. About 7 miles into the trip to mom’s house, the C340 locked up completely. I reset it and reprogrammed the route (you have to stop the car to do this safely). Then, 5 miles down the road it locked up again. I checked for later firmware when I got home and there was none, but an email to customer support was all it took to get a firmware update that resolved this issue.

So with various other tests, I give it a ~90% chance of picking the correct route to wherever you are going (at least in my area)…but often times it does get you where you intend to go but takes you far out of the way. A few major highways are missing from the basemap in my area, which were corrected when I paid $75 for the 2006 map update. Common sense and a backup map are sometimes necessary.

Ok, about the unit itself…the text to speech is worth the extra money of you are considering buying it for that reason. Text to Speech pronunciation has been corrected with several firmware revisions. I have not had any major issues with the text-to-speech pronunciation since these firmware updates were applied.

The screen is bright and the whole thing is smaller than I expected – but there really is no excuse for being upset about the size when you can go to Best Buy or Circuit City and see it for yourself.

So:

Pros – bright screen, doesn’t wash out too bad (I have deeply tinted windows) and speech volume is appropriate. Planning is quick.

It is very accurate on where to turn, giving ample time for braking or lane changing.

Cons – with earlier firm revisions it used to lock up frequently, power cable goes to mounting base, routing not accurate in many cases, and some POI are incorrect. Searching an address is glacially slow. Shows many obscure restuarants but overlooks the mainstream ones. Some of the cardinal directions are reversed. I was going to get on an expressway going east and the directions said to go west. (The drawn map was correct, just the speech was wrong)

Bottom line is that after using this for routine trips around town as well as jaunts into unfamiliar areas, I recommend it.

Update: 11/25/05: On Thanksgiving day I took a longer trip of about 50 miles. Set to use WAAS, the C340 locked up at exactly tyhe same point as in my previous review, about 7 miles from my home on a major highway. The unit definitely locks up at this point consistently and I will be informing Garmin. I did find that turning off WAAS reduces the amount of lockups but I can still get it to lock up with WAAS turned off. When it does work, the C340 is impressive in its accuracy and display. The automatic daylight to dark screen contrast is nice. But I still can’t recommend the product because of the instability. I’ll post an update here if I can get a response from Garmin.

12/30/05 Update: Several weeks ago, Garmin released updated firmware for the C340. I downloaded and installed the firmware update. Address entry appears to be improved and I have not encountered the lockups previously mentioned since applying this firmware patch. That said, I still have a hard time recommending the c340 for the price and other minor to moderate issues, but I am happier now that the lockups are gone.

5/22/07 Update: Changed my recommendation and rating of this product. I have gone many places with my Garmin and it is still a solid performer. Just recently, I went from Orlando to Hampton Roads, VA and the Garmin was very accurate. One thing I do want to add is that the Garmin likes to use major highways. Unchecking this feature is not advised as the Garmin will go “bonkers” using back roads and even dirt roads to get you to your destination. You must update the firmware frequently as Garmin continually irons out the bugs in the product. I still don’t think this thing was ready for prime time when it was first sold…too many bugs! But now, with the latest firmwares and maps, I solidly recommend the Garmin to my friends, family and anyone. I now give it 4 stars, not three, though Amazon won’t let me edit that part.

I spent the last 3 months trying to find the right av receiver for me. After much praise, i bought and returned the onkyo txsr605 (setup and video was great, sound was poor, including a buzz i’ve never had before) and the Harmon Kardon AVR 340 (sound was great, but vidoe quality in non-hd was aweful). I waited a few weeks for the new yamaha a/v receivers to come out in April. It was definifely worth the wait. GUI is not great, but the sound is amazing and no major complaints with the video. My only issues has to do with how quickly it can switch between HD and non-HD souces with my cable box (handshake), although i hear this is a common problem with certain cable boxes.

In summary, I really enjoy the product. My only minor issue is the lack of an RF connector that’s not specifically for FM radio. And the up-conversion for some older devices is VERY unreliable, forcing me to purchase a composite video cable.

Other than that, the RX-V563BL is definitely worth the price tag and is recommended if up-converting composite video devices isn’t a necessity as it was for me.
