Saints Beat Panthers in the Super Dome to Go 8 and 0

* Saints set franchise record with perfect 8 and 0 start

* This was football New Orleans Saints style – hard fought and never easy

Carolina Panthers 20 – New Orleans Saints 30

The Carolina Panthers rode into New Orleans Sunday with a win streak of 8 straight in the Super Dome and almost came away with yet another victory. But for some resolute defending and a couple of quick fire drives the Saints would have kissed goodbye to their 2009 perfect record and left wondering if they would ever beat the Panthers at home again.

Instead the Saints got the job done thanks to some impressive performances by a group of lesser known names to record a come from behind 30 to 20 win over the Panthers… but it was a tight run thing.

Gregg Williams works the problem

The Saints played some uncharacteristic football with penalties, turnovers and miscues littering their play and all but killing them at various stages of the game. That the Saints defence turned up with their A game helmets on whilst the normally explosive offence dozed through the first half owes as much to Gregg Williams aggressive play calling as anything else.

Whilst the D was culpable for the early DeAngelo Williams 66 yard touchdown run, thereafter they solidified the middle of the field and forced the Panthers into a number of 3rd and long situations which they failed to convert. Williams used a lot of blitz packages to unnerve Jake Delhomme on the few occasions he dropped back to pass. This ensured the Saints had an 8 or 9 man front to stop the repetitive Panthers running attack.

The Saints should be thankful for the telling contribution of back up Defensive Tackle Anthony Hargrove, filling in for the injured Sedrick Ellis, who soon found a way to plug holes whilst making a telling contribution with key tackles, a forced fumble and recovery for a touchdown. Along with more recognised starters Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma, Darren Sharper, Roman Harper, Tracy Porter, Jabari Greer et al, the Saints D once again showed that they are a vastly improved unit from years gone by with some great run pursuit and forced turnovers to keep the score competitive.

Brees, Colston and Co. stutter

That the Panthers were able to rack up such an impressive rushing total owes as much to the frequency with which the Saints offence gave up possession as it does to the Panthers conservative play calling. The failure of many key Saints O personnel to turn up for this game is at first worrying and in some ways comforting. If the Saints are able to pull out a win with a misfiring passing attack then it further demonstrates the total team package the Saints can call upon this season.

Amongst the more anonymous and downright sloppy were receiving stalwarts Jeremy Shockey and Marques Colston who had disappointing games by their standards. Speaking of which Drew Brees did not look his usual self assured best throwing a bad interception Colstons way as well as fumbling a bobbled snap in a key 3rd down on two drives in the red zone.

He still had the presence to pick out Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson for deep pass plays and use Reggie Bush in the flat on the way to racking up yet another 300+ yard game but this was far from his best. That fact alone is encouraging. If the Saints can pull out a win against a tough Panthers team with Brees, Colston and Shockey far from their A game then it bodes well for our championship prospects.

Pierre Thomas to the rescue

Some of the Saints early offensive play calling came back to haunt them as they looked to jump out to an early lead. Instead of establishing the running game head coach Sean Payton elected to throw from the offset. Whilst this was not an unreasonable strategy given the success the Saints have had so far this season it did leave them struggling to recapture the initiative when this tactic failed to deliver. It was only through the introduction of Pierre Thomas in a more central second half roll that the Saints were able to move the ball more freely and start to wear down the physical Panthers defence.

One drive in particular stood out with the Saints taking over possession at their own 2 yard line with 11.02 left on the clock. Payton employed a combination of inside running by Thomas and Mike Bell as well as dumping the ball to Reggie Bush and Thomas in the flat. 8 consecutive plays resulted from employing the trio and within 13 plays the Saints had marched all the way to the Panthers 16 before a dropped pass by Colston saw the Saints settling for a John Karney field goal for the go ahead score.

This was the balance of offence that had been so effective for the Saints all season but it took until well into the 4th Quarter to employ it.

Special praise should go to another unsung unit following this game; the Saints offensive line. They did a great job of protecting Drew Brees who, with the exception of an early forced fumble, had plenty of time to pick his targets. Honourable mention goes out to Jermon Bushrod who kept the mighty Julius Peppers quiet all night. Jermon Bushrod for the Pro Bowl; is that such an extravagant claim?

The DNA of Champions

To win and to win ugly is the mark of champions. This was not the best we have seen the Saints, far from it, but it did tell us a lot about the make up of the team and the depth of quality on the roster. When the A team were miscuing the Saints were able to call on some impressive performances by lesser known stars to get the job done. As Al Davis would say "Just Win Baby".

NFL Schedule Information

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

There are currently 32 teams in the NFL, organized according to two conferences, the AFC and NFC, and four divisions for each, by east, west, north and south. The AFC East Division is made up of the current England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and current York Jets. The AFC North consists of the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns, the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The AFC South has the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans. The AFC West has the Oakland Raiders, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers. Over on the NFC side, there’s the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys, the current York Giants and the Washington Redskins representing the NFC East. The NFC North has the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. The NFC South looks up to the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, fresh Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Finally, there’s the NFC West, with the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams.

The season starts on Thursday night for the first burly week of September (or else, the Thursday after Labor Day) and then runs every week until behind December or early January. After the season concludes, six teams from each conference play in the Play Offs, which are single-elimination tournament that kill with the dapper Bowl Championship held in early February. There is also a preseason period that runs from August to September and consists of four games.

When the spruce Bowl happens, it takes site in a neutral sports arena, and the home team designation alternates between both conferences from year to year. Why is the tidy Bowl held on Sunday every year? Is it because Sunday is officially a football-related holiday? No, it’s actually because the system is designed for American High school football games to be played on Friday afternoon, American College football games on Saturday and then the professional league NFL games on Sunday. However, the typical NFL season is longer than the college football season, which explains why NFL games are held on both days. American pro football currently boasts the highest per-game attendance of any professional sports league in the world, with an average of over 67,000 live spectators for every thrilling game.

Youth Football – Your Fifth Football Practice of the Season

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

As has been the case we have all three teams doing individual drills together, which allows us to pit like skilled and sized players together. The line started off with our board drill, of course starting with a fit, then going live. This year we were blessed with some half round dummies, they work extremely well for this drill if you put 2 back to back. It forces the linemen to keep a wide base, otherwise they step on the dummy and fall. The board is less forgiving, slick and just 6 inches wide. I’m a huge believer in long half rounds, if you have the funds. We next did double team fits on a tall bag, then progressed to live double teams. Remember to pair the linemen together that will be double teaming in games, it is important that they learn how to work together as a team.

The backs were working on the splatter blocking drill then moved to the open field blocking drill we use called the diamond drill. Any player still struggling with the splatter blocking drill, stayed with it, as the open field blocking drill is an advanced drill. They then worked on the rest of the “Sainted Six” base series with coaches holding dummies at the point of attack and using cones to designate linemen.

The line then worked their first two steps of the blocking tags we use to tell them how to block on each play. We started with power, then went to sweep, reverse and wedge.

We moved to our base blocking rule review, ( which they all did very well with), then added dads along the defensive line front and had players fit and freeze on the correct “defender” with proper head placement on all of our blocking tags. Even the age 7-9 kids seemed to pick this up very well with very few exceptions.

Lastly we worked about 10 minutes on our base pass block technique.

The backs in the meanwhile were repping plays, the age 7-9s are still on the Sainted Six, the 10-11s are dong the same as there are just 6-8 kids that have played before on this team and just 2 experienced backs. The age 12-13s put in the Mouse Series and Spinner Series in as all 4 backs have played for us before, but may be in different positions. The line however has a number of rookie players on it. We were also able to work a number of the base adjustments in with the 12-13s. With all 3 teams we are repping plays on air with coaches at the point of attack with shields. We have each coach coaching tiny portions of the offense, with one coach holding the left side of the o-line accountable to correct first steps, head placement and technique and another coach doing the same for the right side of the offensive line. We of course are doing that for every position on every one of our football plays. After each rep a new group of players rush in to run the next play, we are a little slower than we want to be at this point . The youngest group is getting a play off every 20 seconds or so, the age 10-11’s are at about 16 seconds and the varsity is at about 12-13 seconds.

To get the kids used to contact we went live for about 20 minutes today.

Keep coming back for more updates.

All the drills, offense and defense can be found in the book “Winning Youth Football a Step by Step Plan”.

Yes… it’s another “coming out” movie. Luckily, this one stands out from the crowd — thanks to great performances and an honest and sensitive portrayal.

It’s 1984 in Sandusky, Ohio… 17-year-old Eric (Stafford) finishes his junior year at high school and takes a summer job serving food at the local amusement park, along with his best friend Maggie (Holmes). There he meets openly gay Rod (Gabrych), who sets Eric off on his road to realizing his budding homosexuality.

The movie does an excellent job of showing the truthful highs & lows of coming out in your teens. In Eric’s discovery, he has his first and several gay sexual experiences (and mistakes that sex for love), goes to his first gay bar, silently deals with the “queer” name calling by his classmates, hides his sexuality from his family, & sleeps with and then alienates his best female friend… all while morphing from a “nerd” into an eccentric dressing, hair-dyed 80’s new wave child in his attempt to become individual. The results are honest, funny, heartfelt, and displayed with an unexpected sexual candor.

The cast is absolutely fantastic. The real stand-out is Chris Stafford, who plays Eric as a sweetly naive young man without becoming sappy. Tina Holmes is great as Maggie, giving a wonderful performance of someone torn between love and then hate. Stephanie McVay plays Eric’s sweet & headstrong Mom, and gives her character emotional depth (especially when Eric finally admits his homosexuality). Best of all, Lea Delaria is an absolute treat as the summer job boss and local gay bar owner that turns into the friend & tour guide we all wish we had when coming out.

Accompanied by a terrific soundtrack featuring Bronski Beat, the Eurythmics, and the Thompson Twins (for all you Twins’ lovers, frontman Tom Bailey composed the score!), this movie wins on all points. I think you’ll greatly enjoy it and ask for a repeat viewing… especially if your life often mirrored it, like some anonymous reviewer.

Edge of Seventeen is a wonderfully realized coming-of-age film about the one teen trauma John Hughes never touched: coming out. To start with, the soundtrack is nothing short of spectacular for 80s nostalgia enthusiasts. And the costuming is eerily authentic (rumor has it that the screenwriter ransacked his own home closet to find his 80s club duds). Passing the fact that David Morton has managed to capture the feel of a Hughes teen flick (down to the great opening credits); the performances are the high point here. Chris Stafford will steal every gay Gen-Xers heart; both because he’s adorably snuggleable without being implausably beautiful, and because playing a 16-yr old from the mid-80s, he’s a stand-in for all of us who WISH we’d had the guts to go after the cute blond boy from our summer job (Anderson Gabrych). Of particular note is Lea Delaria supporting turn as the dyke den-momma; who provides the best possible example for how queer adults should treat queer kids. This is a film that’s full of great moments (mostly dominated by Stafford), including a “first-time” love scene that will leave you twitchy with anticipation, and a rimming scene (move over, “Queer as Folk”) that will have you rolling off the couch with laughter. Best of all is the fact that for a US-made gay-teen themed film, the plot finally seems to break past the level of “Afterschool Special;” enough for me to rank it above such gay film favorites as “Beautiful Thing” and “Get Real.” For American queerboys who came of age in the 80s, this is as real as it gets (or as close to what we wanted in our teen years as we’ll find now.) It’s a must-have for your collection.

“Edge of Seventeen” is for all of us who grew up gay in the 80’s. This movie hits the bull’s eye when it comes to capturing the nuances of the summer of 1984. If you remember listening to Eurythmics and the Thompson Twins and the whole “Second British Invasion,” then you will relate to Eric and the soundtrack to his adolescence. The songs selected here evoke the emotions that Eric is going through: excitement, naivete, and a hint of melancholy underneath. It’s surprising that this movie was made in 1999… you’d almost think it was filmed in the summer of 1984.

Eric’s journey out of the closet is a sweet and unapologetic one. Granted, the plot of the hip older guy leading the ingenue into his first taste of love and loss is not new, but the actor who portrays Eric gives a performance so honest that it’s hard to believe he is acting. This is someone with good eye for detail… from his Tom Bailey haircut to the lost look in his eyes when Rod disillusions him… he really gets it right. And the scene where he comes out of the closet to his mother and pleads with her (”Look at me. Look at me.”) is heart-melting.

I know what a lot of people are thinking, OMG, another freakin’ bring it on movie. First of all: The franchise is really a trilogy (1,3,5), 2nd: Give this one a chance, you will be surprised. There were new lines that are repeatable, mostly spoken by the Character Gloria. These movies do present an element of cheese, but let’s face it, that is what makes them fun. You aren’t watching these with the intent in finding a new oscar contender. As soon as it was over, I wanted to watch again, something that I would never say about any of the others, except for the original. The movie finally brought it!!!! The music was good as well. I never heard a Christina Milian song in my life, and now I am looking to buy the soundtrack. It was a mixture of the 1st and 3rd movies brought together with a Step Up feel. I loved it an now i will watch it again!

At First When I started watching it I thought that it was going to be stupid but then after I got into it I really enjoyed it…. I am going to add this to my collection with the rest of them….. But Please No More

I have two girls 4 & 12yrs old, they have watch all the bring it on movies, and this would be the only one that didn’t get them excited. the movie was ok, but nothing to get them up and dancing about. they would rather watch the old bring it on movies over & over again.

Battle for Terra is one of those rare films that dares to have a politically charged message: Genocide and ecocide is inexcusable under any and all circumstances; following your conscience can have an extraordinarily high price; and government is best run by civilians and not by a military dictatorship!

What is mind boggling is that a soldier is forced to kill his commanding officer and allow his brother, and only surviving family member, to die in battle in order to follow his conscience! This is truly a profound and subversive story. Too bad it is being shown on only one screen in a metropolitan area with 1 1/2 million people! It deserves being seen by a much wider audience!

This exact same subject matter of humans colonizing another world at the expense of another intelligent and benevolent species is rarely covered in science fiction on the big screen. Human beings are usually the victims of some evil alien power. It’s nice to see the tables turned for once and witness human beings as the oppressors, or bad guys.

While watching Battle for Terra, I asked myself repeatedly, “What would I do in a similar situation?” I realize I will never be a soldier in a critical battle that will determine the destiny of the human race. But I’m forced to examine the power I have, no matter how small, to battle evil and injustice when given the opportunity to do so! That’s the beauty of a subversive story! It makes one think!

See: Conscience: The Duty to Obey and the Duty to Disobey and The Light of Conscience: How a Simple Act Can Change Your Life

For other great Science Fiction see::Zardoz and Enemy Mine and Fantastic Planet and A.I. – Artificial Intelligence (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition) and Bicentennial Man and Galaxy Quest (Deluxe Edition)

Love this movie! Highly recommend it! Would have did well on the big screen! A must see…especially for us americans!

The epic scope of a brand new world and the futuristic human populace that attempts to invade it proves to be a little too ambitious in Battle for Terra; bland character designs and dull dialogue can’t quite manage to adequately complement the effective, though heavily overused, storyline. While the alien structures and massive human ships provide intriguing visuals and creative CG craftsmanship, the inhabitants of such visions leaves something to be desired. The humans display less detail than cheap plastic action figures and the aliens astoundingly disprove the theory that creatures with large eyes are inherently cute. The inventiveness behind an extraterrestrial society living in the winding stalks of giant mushrooms amidst a herd of floating sky whales feels sadly wasted.

The inhabitants of the planet Terra live in complete peace, with each other as well as their ecosystem of exotic floating wildlife. But such harmony is cataclysmically interrupted when invaders from Earth attack the planet and begin kidnapping many of the Terrians, including the father of rebellious young Mala (Evan Rachel Wood). In an attempt to follow her father’s captors, Mala chases human pilot Jim Stanton (Luke Wilson), whose ship becomes damaged in the ensuing skirmish and crash-lands at the outskirts of the alien city. Saving Jim’s life, she brings the human back to her house where she agrees to fix his ship in exchange for his help in rescuing her father. But time is quickly running out as dastardly human General Hemmer’s (Brian Cox) plot against the alien world collides in an epic battle with the species’ dark past, and the two renegade fighters must sacrifice everything to stop the destruction of Terra.

It isn’t obnoxiously preachy, but the methods of badgering the audience over the depletion of natural resources and self-destruction through war don’t boast originality. And former allies fighting on opposing sides is a particularly familiar theme. The absence of communication between alien species and the poor communication amongst the humans leads to a hostile takeover attempt that asks viewers to oppose humankind and route for a seemingly defenseless, peace-loving breed. Battle for Terra has uncovered a shocking truth: humans are bad. To further expound that thinking is a singular villainous leader who can take the blame – without Hemmer, it would be too much to contravene the human race. But the Terrians have shortcomings as well; the elders, their teachings, restricted inventions and forbidden territories riddle their culture with morality questions.

The look of the film provides a very mixed result. The environment of Terra is the high point, with towering mushroom homes, abrupt changes in atmospheric conditions as the cameras move across various elevations, and many floating objects (including primitive airships and enormous sky whales). But the Terrians themselves appear too simple – as if for the sake of easier animation, the natives are little more than tadpoles with large eyes, three-fingered hands, and no lips or nose. The humans are comparably simplistic, with little attention to the texturing details that typically grace Pixar animation.

Battle for Terra is too ambitious an idea for a computer animated children’s film, posing the typical problems that face many similar endeavors. It’s not intense enough for adults and too expansive for little kids, and many of the concepts (including organic data downloading to skirt the natural language barrier) are painfully contrived. On a positive note, the score has an appropriate science-fiction resonance and dramatic fervor which overshadows some of the flaws in pacing and framing.

This movie was a fun Steampunk Sci-Fi Adventure. Predictable but much better than most of the cookie cutter Hollywood garbage that has been in the theaters lately. All in all it was a very good war movie and worth while.

Loved the fact that I was able to watch a pre-theatrical release at home. for those of you who thought it was overpriced, 9.99 is what you pay to see a movie in the theater and I watched it with my sons, saving an addition $30.00, so this movie was a bargain. I’d highly recommend this movie to people who like the genre. Special effects were good and I really enjoyed the steampunk aspect of the weapons and vehicles. COAL POWERED SPACECRAFT AWESOME!

The movie is average but overpriced at $9.99. I would think at $9.99, I should get the movie (digital copy) when it comes out on DVD for free. The idea of pre-theatrical rental is cool and I hope to see more.

All in All if you have $10 and 2 hours to burn, buy it.

First off it’s nice to see a pre-theater release available on Amazon, though I have to agree that it is way overpriced. [...] bucks, might as well go to the theater and see it on the big screen.

As for the movie itself it’s terrible. They definitely spent all their money on the special effects instead of a writer or lord forbid a continuity director. Without ruining what little plot there is the movie is basically a fantasy movie and throw in some World War I guns and steam powered airships or spaceships if I am to believe the nonsense that passed for dialogue.

Save your money and just get it through Netflix when the DVD comes out.

Hey, you…stop sitting by the phone waiting for him to call…get up and go watch this movie!

I have to admit, I’m not much of a rom-com watcher. Unlike others of its ilk, though, this flick wisely admits that relationships aren’t all rainbows and butterflies, but that they are complicated, confusing, messes that aren’t necessarily all sorted out by the time the credits roll.

The premise is simple enough – the film claims:

“If a guy says he’ll call and doesn’t, he’s not in the hospital with a broken number-dialing finger; he’s just not that into you”.

After a mediocre first date with pre-recession real estate agent Conor (Kevin Connolly), the film’s main protagonist Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), over zealous for date success and naively optimistic as ever, is certain that she has found Mr. Right. But when he doesn’t call, her friends (Jennifer Aniston as Beth and Jennifer Connelly as Janine) comfort her with assurances of his interest and case studies of how they knew someone who knew someone in the exact situation – and it worked out for them, of course!

Not that Beth or Janine are living it up in the mansion of romantic bliss, mind you. Aniston’s character has been living with Neil (Ben Affleck) for seven years, and for five of the seven, she’s been dying to know why he won’t pop the question. Wholly against the institution of marriage, though, Neil says that he’s totally committed to her and he doesn’t need a piece of paper to prove…yadda, yadda, yadda.

Connelly’s character Janine on the other hand is married. Happily? Not so much. Ben’s (Bradley Cooper) baby blues are soon tempted toward blonder waters when he meets Anna (Scarlet Johansson) at a convenience store one fine evening; how convenient. Too bad he’s married, he reasons.

Drew Barrymore easily plays Mary, Anna’s friend. Her role is pretty forgettable; but then she did spend most of her time producing the movie.

Justin Long plays Alex, the woman conquering bar owner who decides to school Gigi in the thinking of men, no feelings spared.

For the most part the story lines are tied together in believable ways and it’s interesting to watch just how they’re all connected – kind of like 6 degrees of separation.

A tough pill to swallow:

Perhaps too realistic at times, “He’s Just” exposes the well-intentioned way we women attempt to comfort our spurned friends – not with assurances that despite her many attractive qualities, the guy just isn’t interested for one reason or another. Instead, we assure our friends that there is no way he could be uninterested.

Really ladies, if you suspect that your friend is dating a guy who can’t see her true worth, before you swell her head with an idealized, irresistible image of herself, please take her to see this movie, and let her do some soul searching. The film will do all the talking for you without patronization.

Be warned:

It’s hardly a date movie (unless you want to end the date by breaking up when the scales have dropped from your eyes and you realize that you’re more “into” the relationship than your significant other).

Best performances from: Jennifer Connelly as Janine who is more obsessed with the idea that her husband is smoking behind her back than that he is having an affair. Ginnifer Goodwin too has earned her keep. Her embarrassing attempts at securing “the one” are so realistic you will likely find yourself reddening at the all too familiar lengths to which she goes.

Best line from the movie: Listen out for the line the guy uses who ends up with Gigi (won’t say who ;-) ), it could be the “You complete me” of the 21st century!

Disclaimer:

This film may cause some discomfort. Side effects are generally mild and may include feelings of embarrassment over previous postdate obsession/stalking.

4.5 stars.

First I heard that so many great actors and actresses in this movie, I felt like whaoow.. it must have been a great script that all of them join the team to make this movie. But sometimes they’re kinda tricky, many great actor and a good director but suddenly it’s way overrated (which I don’t understand how come they waste all that talents) but not in this one. People kinda harsh to this movie, I guess that they expect a simple feel good chick flick, or romantic comedy, as usual. This one is more of a serious romantic drama with a little bit humor like in real life, so I found it amazing. Real life opinion (not the ones they put on purpose between each written explanation, ex : “if he never calls you” then some guy or girl talks.. no .. not that one), the story itself is telling us about relationship, how to find and maintain one, in a great storytelling style, it’s kinda slow at the beginning but it’s all worthied to be watched and learned from. Some little real life comedy here and there, but overall it’s a great drama about realtionships. All the actors, actresses and the director are doing a great job.

If you are trying to find or in a relationship, this movie is totally worthwatching. Trust me. If you are a chick flick regular, probably you won;t find this one as fun as other chick flick or romantic comedy (because this is more of a drama). I like it a lot. Thanks

This has nothing to do with being a chick flick or not. It’s a fantastic film filled with experiences that men and women go through in relationships. Great to watch if you’re looking for an easy laugh. My wife and I saw it with some friends in the movies, and I must say that part of the fun was hearing the comments and laughs coming from the audience. So have your friends over, open a bottle of wine, and have an enjoyable light-hearted evening. It’s worth it.

Let’s face it. We’re not watching this sort of movie for great character development or intriquite plot twists. This sort of movie is all about women in bikinis, or less. This movie is an excellent piece of work, if judged with that in mind. The women are many and Hot, the situations are funny and provocative, and the outfits are skimpy, revealing and imaginative. There are few movies in this genre that can top this one. If you are a fan, Don’t hesitate to buy this flick!

this movie was good until the bob sagetish moral, meaning of life, message to the people or whatever u wanna call it came in the script.

it is like full house with nudity. if youre bored and wanna see some nudity, or girls from the early 90 in bikini. make your day.

Start with the first Bikini Summer movie. It’s the same movie only way better. You won’t have to put up with some boring subplot about helping a couple of homeless people. That could have been a nice Disney movie but doesn’t belong in Bikini Summer. And the first movie has more nudity – even a couple of full-frontal scenes. I think that gives an extra dimension to movies like this.

Mel Gibson’s Maverick is somewhat goofy but charming, sly, and fairly droll.

A number of superb cameos provide some silly relief, especially Danny Glover come the beginning of the movie. The biggest surprise for me was Jodie Foster, who, in an impressively rare comedic role, thankfully discards her repetoire of facial tics for a distinguished more natural performance here.

The situation is kept sparkling simple until come the ruin — and the slay has a stout twist, which I won’t mumble. Suffice it to say that your time will be well spent.

Recommended rental for distinct, but also judge buying this helpful DVD because this comedy does well with advise viewing.

Maverick is a hilarious, palatable and fun film to spy and bears well over several viewings. Of course, how could this film have missed given its cast; Mel Gibson, James Garner, Jodie Foster, James Coburn and a whole slew of other stars to include an outrageously laughable cameo by Danny Glover. The more bright thing here is that James Garner played Brett Maverick when it was a television series many moons ago and he had turned down many film scripts for this one where he didn’t even play the lead. Maverick is a expansive hit and all keen in making this graceful western/comedy deserve all of the accolades they received for it!

The premise:

Bert, oops I mean Brett Maverick (Mel Gibson) is a card playing and like a flash drawing hustler who is on his draw to proper worn St. Louis for a sizable poker tournament. His main pickle is that he’s three thousand dollars short of the entry fee so he decides to terminate in another town and play another round of poker in the hopes of picking up some of the three thousand he needs. This is where he meets Annabelle Branford played by the ever aesthetic Jodie Foster. Mrs. Branford’s beauty is matched only by her desire to lift up the money to enter the gargantuan poker game as well. Not too long afterwards we meet Zane Cooper (James Garner) who is a lawman of some fame and he unbiased happens to be going the same plot as Maverick and Mrs. Branford. What follows is most definitely one of the most hilarious westerns ever made. I would highly recommend this film to any and all fans of the stars and this genre.
