Here’s the absorbing thing about Richard Linklater’s “A Scanner Darkly”: for a film about heavy drug consume area in the not too distant future, it’s probably one of the most impartial and complex anti-drug stories ever told. I say this in spite of the fact that I found the specifics of the dwelling incredibly difficult to bewitch. All I could comprehend were the general bits of information, most of which were gathered from trailers and commercials. Apparently, a fictional drug called Substance D rules the streets of Orange County, California. It’s a highly addictive, brain-frying narcotic that has a long list of negative side effects. It’s also an illegal substance, one that undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) has gotten quite familiar with in his attempt to locate its main distributor. Upon infiltrating the home of a group of pill popping slackers, he starts using in order to blend in. Unfortunately, this drugged lifestyle eventually leaves him unable to distinguish reality from hallucinations.

Through the cinematic process of rotoscoping, Linklater has enabled the audience to feel the proper same device as Arctor does. Each frame of film was traced over and stylistically repainted, making the world the characters live in–as well as the characters themselves–look half like a cartoon and half like the physical realm. It was an absolutely wonderful sight, and I found that it gave the narrative an added dimension by representing a kind of realistic unreality (if that makes any sense at all) . In that sense, it’s almost symbolic that the undercover cops wear paddle suits, which are high tech cloaks with anatomical images that continuously shift from one to the next (apparently, a single suit can project millions of appearances) . The space of the world these characters live in is ruled by uncertainty and deception. Arctor is ultimately tested, not only in terms of what he believes to be the truth, but in terms of his location of mind, as well.

I now understand why that rotoscoping process was passe for an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick recent. Only he could have written about the life-destroying effects of an addictive substance. Likewise, only this kind of film can do justice to the point he was trying to get, namely that you can’t trust anyone, especially when you’re addicted to a remarkable drug. Unfortunately, elaborating on that point would give too grand away; I will say that all in this movie isn’t exactly as it seems, and more than a couple of characters have hidden agendas. There are a number of truths hidden amongst the film’s eccentric style, and by the time you win halfway through, you’re completely lost.

However, this is the kind of movie you don’t mind getting lost in, even if you have no plan what’s going on. I have to admit that while I understood the underlying message of the account, I barely understood this film as a whole. Watching the sequences unfold and listening to the characters interact is almost as brain scrambling as the rotten Substance D is. This is especially fair of the conversations between James Barris (Robert Downey, Jr.), Ernie Luckman (Woody Harrelson), and Charles Freck (Rory Cochrane), three of Arctor’s equally spaced out friends. Their esoteric banter flows seamlessly from topic to topic in an Altered Consciousness sort of map, filled with anti-establishment ramblings that almost approach off as poetic. It even gets comic at times; during a road lunge to San Diego, Barris claims he left the front door of their house unlocked and attached a ticket for burglars to read (which, supposedly, was all section of an clarify diagram to recount the intruder and solve the mystery tedious the Substance D ring) .

There are some keen moments shared between Arctor and his girlfriend, Donna Hawthorne (Winona Ryder) . Their relationship revolves around their mutual abuse of Substance D, which doesn’t exactly enhance their moments together so remarkable as it leaves them in a perpetually dazed station of awareness. Their conversations are almost as esoteric as those of Barris, Luckman, and Freck, the only dissimilarity being a little degree of intimate, meaningful language. One also gets the sense that Arctor is trying to understand Donna as a person, specifically why she’s behaving in determined ways. He knows how devastating the effects of Substance D can be, and he fears that maybe she’s going too far with her usage. The two point to honorable effort for one another, even when they acquire themselves lost in a conversation about drooping, floating cats.

Despite the free flowing course the epic takes, everything does approach together by the ruin. “A Scanner Darkly” is one of those movies that can cleverly mask slack a hallucinogenic facade in order to jabber a serious message. If you’re considering seeing this movie, you have to be willing to win jerked around somewhat, especially when it comes to your expectations for solid characterizations and straightforward storytelling. I mediate I knew all along that I’d secure this film confusing; the ads made it perfectly definite that this was a very unconventional project. But in the kill, I didn’t really mind; the myth takes on the earn of a seriously warped puzzle, and I welcomed the opportunity to assign the pieces together and figure things out for myself.

Let me raze by quoting the tagline from Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth”: “A world where everything seems possible, and nothing is as it seems.” I rep this to be a fitting arrangement to portray the world of “A Scanner Darkly.” If you look it with that quote in mind, you unprejudiced might arrive away with a better view of it.

This is a movie you definitely want on DVD – because you’ll want to leer it first with honest the movie playing, and then after that with the audio soundtrack that includes director Richard Linklater, actor Keanu Reeves and most importantly the daughter of Philip K Dick. The insights that she provides into the movie and the storyline are priceless.

It’s significant to realize that Philip K Dick usually wrote about characters, not action sequences – and specifically, he wrote about those in society who did not “fit in” well. If you sight through his stories, you’ll regain they often feature people who are misfits, who society overlooks or forgets. In A Scanner Darkly, the featured ‘oddballs’ are druggies crooked on Substance D – a drug that is never really described, but apparently causes paranoia and hallucinations.

The key here is to sit down with a glass of wine, a immense bowl of popcorn and resolve encourage for a character-driven tale. This isn’t a Rambo or Dirty Dozen memoir – it’s about how people report to each other, in many subtle ways. It’s a gape of interactions.

I really luxuriate in that this was done in a combination of valid life acting and animation. It floors me that in original times anyone might explore down on this because it is a “cartoon”. Is a Renoir less qualified than an Ansel Adams because a Renoir was done by hand? Animation isn’t inherently kiddie. Hand drawn works can bear quite musty topics. In this case it is *ideally* valid to the myth – because a main aspect of the memoir is that the characters never quite know what is sincere and what is imagination. Are the bugs really there? Can he trust what he sees? All signs point to NO. The viewer is caught up in this same confused world. If this had been live action, then ‘odd things’ would have instantly stood out. But the point of a drug haze is that everything seems ‘unreal’ – and so strange things fit into that plug remarkable more smoothly.

If you don’t know druggies, rest assured that characters like this are quite average – and this record is in essence an autobiography of Philip K Dick’s life in the 70s. He lived in a house impartial like this with his two brothers after his divorce. He lost his wife and two young girls. He was very paranoid that one of his house-mates was a narc, spying on their druggie activities. One of his friends did judge bugs were crawling on him. At the raze of the movie is Dick’s genuine ending to the anecdote – a list of his friends who were damaged or slain by drugs. Included on this list are his ex-wife and himself.

So what you have in the movie are the druggies at turns being nice to each other, being very cruel to each other, mistrusting each other, and turning to each other for relieve. One of the druggies – Bob – is actually a narc cop code-named Fred. He’s gone undercover to figure out who is supplying Substance D to the place. Unfortunately, he’s gotten himself curved during his undercover work. Even worse, fragment of what Substance D does is to end your brain – so he’s developed in essence split personalities. The Bob-Druggie section forgets most of the time he IS a narc. The narc half of him, when he’s in the police location, knows he’s spying on this group of druggies but forgets that he is one of them. So when the narc is told to specifically contemplate on “Bob”, he literally doesn’t realize that this is him.

Here’s where the movie – trying to stuff a dense book into under 2 hours – has some problems. If you haven’t read the book, it’s not certain at all that Narc-Fred forgets who he is when he goes undercover as Bob. It’s a large twist in the book, but in the movie it seems sure to the watcher that it’s the same person, and it’s not made definite in the record that he’s forgetting his “other half”.

Other than that, the memoir is really blooming straightforward, plot-wise. The druggies are paranoid about the world around them and hasten on with their lives. The cops are trying to figure out who the supplier is, so they bug the house and try to gather that information. Like most Dick stories, there’s a twist, although to be objective I notion it would be a powerful larger twist. Also, like most Dick stories, there’s limited female presence and the ending is only slightly hopeful. These aren’t happy-go-lucky romances that he writes – they are shaded warnings about where society is heading when it marginalizes those who don’t fit in perfectly.

If you’re confused about the movie, I definitely recommend reading the modern. That might be easier to select and give you more insight into the characters. Then go serve and glimpse the movie again – taking it dull. Pay attention to the nuances of what they say, and how the characters picture. Behold how they feel society is treating them – and then capture a sight what society actually does with these people. Maybe they aren’t quite so paranoid after all – maybe there is some resaon for how they feel.

Ok, let me regain this straight. They made a documentary about Al Gore giving a lecture? About global warming? Okay, I’m already asleep. Snore. Yawn. Why don’t I fair quit home and effect the money I would expend to buy a nap.

All kidding aside, if you know anything about Al Gore, you know this is a subject he is extremely committed to and passionate about. Very passionate. And after five years of some of the worst, most sinful environmental policy to ever arrive out of Washington, DC, there is no better time for “An Inconvenient Truth”.

I know many contemplate Gore to be less than a enthralling speaker. But in “An Inconvenient Truth” he comes across as a different man because he is so passionate and committed to the subject of global warming, he comes across as a different man. Informed, knowledgeable, conversational and persuasive, if he were like this during the election, there would be no Florida Relate in our history books. Okay, so that didn’t happen. But the result is that Gore, distinguished like Clinton and Carter, are trying to do something with their plot to support better the world. Gore has long been an environmental advocate and it shows. He knows the facts inside and out; people have provided him with statistics, graphs, charts and more, and he uses them in this presentation.

Buy,Download, Or Stream An Inconvenient Truth! Click Here

As Gore states, he has given the lecture more than a thousand times around the globe. Because of this, he is extremely comfortable addressing colossal audiences, giving them a lot of scientific research to digest. Remarkably, he makes it easy to understand, pointing out key facts, walking us through some of the more difficult to understand ideas and problems. He also knows when the audience needs a smash and interjects humor here and there. At one point, he shows a spoof of an educational film though-provoking by the people at “The Simpsons”. At others, he makes fun of himself and his political ambitions and woes.

Davis Guggenheim, the filmmaker, has apparently presented Gore’s lecture virtually intact. As Gore moves around on a dais, clicking for the next mosey, he makes persuasive points. But he also reaches a couple of key points. When this happens, the filmmakers smartly pull abet from the lecture, giving us a portrait of a few key moments in Gore’s life. The argument he makes in his lecture is persuasive, intellectual and well view out, but because we learn more about the man making the presentation, these points have even more resonance. Not only do these moments give us more details about Gore, they also provide a respite from the scientific data, allowing us to hold what we have learned.

At one point, Gore states that the data is irrefutable and it appears to be. Remarkably, the filmmakers demonstrate footage of various people attacking Gore, or claiming the data he is presenting is not based in fact. Yet, we can explore it for ourselves, honest in front of us. And I am distinct Gore could easily provide a bibliography of resources for us to check out all of the facts he uses. What would drive some of these people to attack Gore and this data? Some of the clips are from Gore’s days as a Senator and Vice President, so some of that can be contributed to political parties trying to one-up each other. But currently, Gore does not acquire political office, yet the novel administration seems intent on giving every atomize to the worst polluters in the country, allowing them to construct as great money as possible while they pollute and pollute and pollute. Gore shows a rush about this argument. Apparently, there is the plan reliable environmental policy will impact the economy. How do these same people clarify the relationship between Toyota, Honda, Ford and GM? Toyota and Honda build vehicles with far better gas mileage than their competitors and are grand more successful because of it. An argument Gore makes very convincingly.

Thankfully, Gore stays away from political bias. More or less. A couple of times, he makes laughable remarks about his failed race for the presidency, or he makes a pointed comment about the original administration, but by and immense his comments are directed at us and what we should do to do our planet. The film isn’t void of bias, but there could certainly have been a lot more. The fact the filmmaker and Gore showed some restraint makes his presentation even more persuasive.

The film ends with a series of `calls to action’ as the credits launch. Frankly, these aren’t needed because Gore’s arguments are so convincing. But they are effective. As one call to action states “Run everyone you know to gawk this film.” Well, folks, that’s what I am doing. Go and look this film. We need to do something before it is too gradual to do anything. Hopefully, this film will one day be viewed as a historical document of the beginning of a gigantic change and not as a panic film.

When I was a child, people clapped at the demolish of movies — we knew that the filmmakers wouldn’t actually hear us, but we showed our appreciation nonetheless. Over the years, it seems that tradition has died out. I don’t judge I’ve heard anyone clap at the slay of a movie for twenty-odd years. Until, that is, this afternoon.

The entire audience clapped at the waste of “An Inconvenient Truth”.

It is all too rare to peep people act out of idealism and ethics. Those qualities shine throughout this film — Al Gore has noticed a scrape — a Gargantuan dilemma — and he has learned about it, and is trying to solve it. The “news” media gives us exiguous 15-second soundbites instead of news and arguments, believing that we, the American public, are too insensible to comprehend any non-trivial ideas. Gore, on the other hand, clearly has faith in us to UNDERSTAND, to do the legal thing, and, above all, to CARE.

See it.

I went through a period when I was studying Russian language in which I was tired of reading Chekhov. I regard this as a period of temperary madness which I am thankfully past. If asked, I would say that I am an unconditional fan.

One need not be familiar with Chekhov’s work to relish this colleciton of plays staged by the BBC. It really does hold some gems. The most outstanding work on this collection, and it would be worth it if it had this play alone on it, is The Cherry Orchard with Judi Dench. All I can say is WOW! What a expedient cast, this is the ideal version of this, the most Russian of all plays. Anyone who wishes to understand Russian society should first view this play and this version of the play. I am hoping that someday someone might do this play and state it in the “modern Russia.” It would require only a small degree of updating. Rather than think on the ruin of serfdom, one can meditate on the extinguish of the Soviet Union (it amounts to the same thing, really) .

There are other plays in the collection. There is an kindly staging of Three Sisters (Janet Suzman is incredible here), Uncle Vanya and the Seagull. All are very well done. There are few better ways to see all the plays of Chekhov in such an easy and accessable manner. One can only gawk forward to further collections of classic dramatists from the BBC.

I have not had time to go through this entire dwelling, but have watched the included version of Uncle Vanya with Ken Jones as Vanya and a young Anthony Hopkins as the doctor. Jones is one of the best Vanyas I have seen; his histrionics are presented in a sustained crescendo that ends in a status of absolute meltdown. Vanya is a very difficult role since the actor must constantly hurry this wave of emotion without blowing it. Jones is great, so is Anthony Hopkins as Astrov and Jennifer Armitage as Sonja. There seem to be some minor liberties with the text but it all works well.

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an astonishing transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly racy and definite, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly comely. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the anecdote, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the notice of the DVD alone, but there’s so distinguished more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to withhold even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a fair Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to survey this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and descend in cherish with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was unprejudiced critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD state as a review of the fresh Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will gaze, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on) . You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the occupy.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked kindly, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally sad and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t inquire of worthy enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever atrocious. I stared with my jaw hanging originate. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the unusual prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more fabulous is the expansion of the tonal scale. Sunless scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how exquisite the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine get the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is clear. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to arrive out and stroke. You can leer every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not mighty less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you opinion it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the unusual camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to examine it this diagram.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even belief it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too powerful work for a dinky improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles savor finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of fresh programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films? ) There’s also a station of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone explain the higher brand.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (though-provoking enough that you might want to perceive it more than once), plus all the restful Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is famed to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that own tiny relation to the modern book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and amusing * — version is especially unsuitable, as it is dinky more than a vehicle for Semon’s designate of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more radiant than none, especially as the technology to originate a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “pleasant philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be pleased”, or “The acknowledge to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so remarkable “suitable” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your occupy fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re inactive” homilies that grew out of the tall opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I contain L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy sage in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the memoir. I have Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals obtain a grueling scuttle to the Emerald City, then glean the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “erroneous”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that appetizing word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, savor, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “right” is simple — Savor, wisdom, and courage are what we need to rep through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ hold them, and all we need to do is impart them.

“Is that legal? ”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the quiz you’ve been waiting for the reply to… Is the Blu-ray residence worth the heed?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000) .

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (Peer the preceding review.) It was, and level-headed is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is pleasing darn safe — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Stamp the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s humdrum legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can notice (fair about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you urge fair out in a buying frenzy and pick up the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is capable enough for an obedient recount on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t suitable enough for a _large_ HD present. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a first-rate upconverter (not all do) ; and you don’t sit “on top of” the camouflage (as I do) ; you might behold minute incompatibility between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you? ), you will almost certainly grasp the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a share of junk. The do shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a poor transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been do on the DVD disk.

I will approach help later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly gawk titanic chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

I have been a fan of “Smallville” from the beginning, and was very delighted both as a viewer and a fan at how this season turned out. In bellow opposition to season four’s disastrous legend arch keen Isobel and the Teague family attempting to manipulate Lana, this one takes a worthy more serious (and yet savory) path through Clark’s choices and their ultimate consequences. It also shifts the appreciate interest from Clark and Lana to Lex and Lana, something they have been hinting at four seasons and only now have the courage to bring out.

Lex Luthor and Jonathan Kent do battle to become plot senator, Lionel Luthor switches sides (again), Clark consummates his cherish for Lana and then is forced to give her up, Chloe starts working for the Daily Planet, one of the leading cast members is killed off, and it winds up in the most explosive, dramatic, and remarkable season finale of the series.

It’s rare that I have enjoyed almost every episode in a season, but there is some solid stuff here — “Lexmas” is a heart-ripping “what if” featuring Lex’s alternate life if he is to determine the path of beneficial, with a sadistic twist in the second half to design Stephen King occupy a step back; “Tomb” is a fantastically fun ghost legend in which Allison Mack plays an alternate Chloe; “Reckoning” brings two consecutive deaths and a painful funereal; “Mercy” revolves around the charisma between Martha and Lionel when a manic madman forces them to construct their arrangement through his house of horrors; and five or so episodes revolve around the steadily building seduction of Lana Lang. Tom Welling also makes his directorial debut (and a salubrious one at that) in “Fragile,” an ironic twist of fate since it contains a super-hot first kiss between Lana and Lex at the ruin.

I am a cramped disappointed that there aren’t more features (one would have idea at least “Reckoning” and “Fragile” would come by a commentary, and no blooper reel is miserable, since many of the actors have mentioned the various pranks and oops! on position) but will be pleased to enjoy this season. I gape forward with colossal anticipation the possibilities the next will bring.

So powerful changes in the fifth season of Smallville that it is hard to comment on aspects of the season without spoiling it for those who have not seen it yet.

However, in the most general terms, Smallville continues as one of the most animated fantasy shows on television. A original character played by James Marsters of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fame joins the cast. He plays a professor at the college that Clark attends. Of course, no one is who they appear to be in this anecdote.

Themes of loyalty and betrayal prevail. As Clark, Lois and Chloe enter college and a unique phase of life they must earn harder decisions. Lex continues to obtain choices that will separate him from his humanity and his friendship with Clark Kent. Clark continues to push away Lex and Lana, even though at times it seems he will reconcile with them. Lois continues to be flip, curt and annoying. It is challenging that not only Clark but most of the main characters seemed doomed to have no sex life–as if the assumed celibacy of this superhero is infectious somehow.

In general the season is darker and less hopeful than prior seasons. Despite this it continues to fascinate and enthrall.

Jessica Alba swivels and pops her way to the top (or at least into Missy Elliot’s heart) in hip-hop dance flick Honey. Honey Daniels (Alba, Dark Angel) dances in nightclubs; when she accidentally gets videotaped, a hip-hop video director spots her uniqu talent and hires her first as a dancer, then as a choreographer. But when he wants her body as much as her talent, how will she sustain her career? And how will this affect her dream of creating a dance studio for the local street kids? Honey is the usual Hollywood silliness, executed with sincerity but not much imagination. For some reason, Alba’s sexy gyrations are supposed to be more empowering than other dancers’ sexy gyrations, while being no less titillating. Featuring Mekhi Phifer, David Moscow, and cameos by hip-hop stars like Missy Elliot and Ginuwine. –Bret Fetzer
